I think the main issue is that the stages in this game generally fall into two extremes: Stages that more or less try to keep a competitive, symmetrical layout even if the stage can't be legal for one reason or another and stages which are gigantic amusement parks with a lot going on but require you to chase your opponent and sometimes fight the stage itself at the same time.we already have a general lack of good casual stages
What the game lacks are stages which hit the sweet spot between them. If you look at Slap City, which has more stages overall which helps granted, there are a lot of stages that are medium sized with uneven elevations in their terrain. They feel more like real places you just happen to be fighting in without going overboard on spectacle for the sake of having spectacle.
