Is there any Smash Bros. characters you didn't know about before their Smash Bros. reveal? (or well before you picked up the game).
Ness for sure. I'm an aficinados of the Super Mario Bros. series since the beginning (yet I'm not even half good as I should be) and Ness was my "Who???" moment when I unlocked him, and it lead me to discover his game.

In defense of Cinematic final smashes. For some characters honestly the cinematic final smash is just the best option for the character.
I will agree to that but when you have 24 newcomers and only one of them has a Final Smash you can actually interact with, it starts to be a little egregious.

But yeah, there are some where the cutscene is perfect and Sephiroth is the best example of it, especially since it doesn’t take over two minutes like in FF7 lmao

My friend and me just remembered we used to play lots of crossover games when we were teens (SEGA Superstar Tennis, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, Project x Zone 1)....even though we had no idea who like most of those people were, but we had a lot of fun regardless lol.
As for Smash Bros...my first game was Brawl and i was a PS2 kid....so like 70% of the roster was a "who?" for me, i think i only knew the Mario + Adjecents, the Pokemon cast, Link, Snake and Sonic. lol
After Brawl the only character i didn't know was Ritcher, everyone else i know about or heard about, im not sure if they'll ever introduce another character i don't know about in the future, but i mean Ritchet caught me off guard, so who knows.
Joker, Hero (Dragon Quest was somewhat known to me thanks to Rocket Slime, but wasn't TOO familiar yet.), and Snake. Also, Ness and Lucas from Mother series is a completely HUH!? character back then that eventually holds a huge bag to SADNESS and emotion due to their stories.

I still stick with :ultkrool: as my main despite being vulnerable to combos from faster characters. Though, that hasn't stopped me from trying with other characters and I do need breaks after a few online matches win or lose. If I don't, self-destructive to my GSP points and mental stability.

My one gripe with cinematic cutscenes is that they introduced it like it was a necessary streamline for all characters, except not really and some characters just have busted, broken, OP final smashes that make these changes also look like an unnecessary nerf to what they previously had before.

:ultzelda::ultpeach::ultdaisy: These ladies are ****ing menaces.

:ultbowser: I would rather be transformed as Giga Bowser than have to aim a reticle moving at a snails pace just to maybe KO someone… or do like 40%.

:ultzelda: is the most dangerous due to her Final Smash. You can't escape the Triforce of Wisdom's sucking power.

If :ultbowser: doesn't return to controllable Giga Bowser, maybe allow him to go Fury Bowser.

Before the first Smash Bros game, I knew nothing about Earthbound, so I had no idea who Ness was. And while I also didn't know who Captain Falcon was, I did play and owned F-Zero.

For the rest of the series, it was mainly just Fire Emblem characters. That's really it. I never played the games or kept up with its characters. I do remember seeing Ike in commercials and a lot of talk about Chrom before they appeared in Smash but that's it. Fire Emblem is a series I just don't follow.

Regarding more recent reveals, I knew Hero was a Dragon Quest protagonist but nothing else about them and I haven't played enough Fire Emblem games to have recognized Byleth, I also didn't know that Richter existed prior to his and Simon's reveal.

As for when way back when I first got into SSB, I didn't even know who over half of Melee's characters were when I first got the game either lmao. I only recognized Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Pikachu, Mario and Luigi. I also didn't know who Snake, Ike, Lucas and R.O.B were when I first got Brawl.

Alright, I'll give it a shot.

Lu Bu

Pros

  • Koei Tecmo and Nintendo are on good terms with each other. Many of KT's games have been released and/or ported for Nintendo consoles. They've even developed several games with Nintendo.
  • Dynasty Warriors and its sister series Samurai Warriors are two of the most well-known hack and slash series out there, and they've had multiple spin-offs including ones from Nintendo IPs (Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors).
  • Both the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors series have incredible soundtracks. DW mixes traditional Chinese music with rock music while SW mixes traditional Japanese music with techno music.
  • Lots of moveset potential with a new gimmick (Musou Gauge).
  • The Hack and Slash genre could definitely use some representation in Smash.

Iffy

  • The fact that he's based on a historical figure from the Three Kingdoms era of China might be an issue.
  • It may be difficult to balance him out due to the fact that he's a Musou character, and possibly one of the strongest Musou characters. But there could be ways to balance him out, including his normal attacks.

Cons

  • Dynasty Warriors is based on the Three Kingdoms era of China, while its sister series Samurai Warriors is based on the Sengoku period of Japan, meaning most of the characters in both series are based on actual historical figures. So getting someone like Lu Bu into Smash may be difficult.
  • Dynasty Warriors itself had very few releases on Nintendo consoles, and they apparently weren't very good, so that may not help Lu Bu's chances either.
  • Lu Bu may have some competition with Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, another of Koei Tecmo's most popular franchises, and he's one of the most heavily-requested characters for Smash.
I'm a little late on this, but I added a little Con to my Lu Bu write-up.

So about cinematic Final Smashes…

There are some cinematic Final Smashes that I think actually work, like Blue Falcon for Captain Falcon, but I don't think every character in the roster needs one. That would just be too repetitive. There should definitely be more variety.

Bring back transformations where you can actually control the character, even just for a few seconds, such as Giga Bowser.

Well, my first game was Brawl, so... huh. I was a big Mario kid back then, so I guess it was really just Pit, Ike, and Snake. I was vaguely familiar with Meta Knight and Lucas (though I did think Lucas was Ness' cousin).

Smash 64: Ness.
Melee: Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Marth and Roy.
Brawl: Probably Pit and Lucas.
3DS/Wii U: Shulk.
Ultimate: Richter.

I assume a big reason for the Final Smash reworks was FS Meter, but they could probably just adjust the duration of transformation Final Smashes to be significantly less when activated from FS Meter. Characters who do have cutscene Final Smashes should have way shorter cutscenes when activated from FS Meter, too. (It’d also benefit a lot from having the cutscene occur on the stage rather than in an alternate universe that makes everyone look at it, so other players can keep playing.)

My thoughts on them are:
  • Laser Final Smashes are always useful, but have the highest chance to be lame visually.
  • I hate every single limited transformation Final Smash.
    • The zoomies ones aren't much better IMO. Except for Bonus Fruit. That one's pretty cool.
  • The unique Final Smashes are a grab bag of some of the coolest and most busted, but also the lamest and weakest ideas in the series.
  • Cutscene Final Smashes are consistently some of the coolest out there due to cinematic camera angles.
  • EDIT: Mechanically, Smackdown and Cutscene Final Smashes are pretty much the same thing.

What do you guys think about them?

Questioning my existence while asleep
Is there any Smash Bros. characters you didn't know about before their Smash Bros. reveal? (or well before you picked up the game).
A lot of the characters in Melee I didn't recognize when I first played it. Other than the Pokémon, Kirby, the Mario and Mario adjacent characters (aside from learning a "Dr. Mario" exists, but I mean, it's simply Mario as a doctor), and knowing a "Zelda" exists and recognizing Link while not knowing his name (yet never thinking he was "Zelda"), I was in the dark.

After that, I'd follow Smash stuff since Brawl was announced, so other than not recognizing Pit right away (but thinking back to the Melee trophy) and learning about the Zero Suit's existence through the trailer, I at least seen each of Brawl's newcomers at least once. Even Lucas, who had come up a few times in speculation but people talked about Masked Man more.
Even Snake, I at least recognized through Nintendo Power, so the big shock for me with him was that he wasn't a Nintendo character.

Wii Fit Trainer is someone I didn't know existed before a friend sent me a clip of her reveal through text (didn't see it live). Other than her, I knew of all other Smash For newcomers to varying degrees.

None of Ultimate's newcomers were anyone I haven't at least seen before somehow.
The closest one I didn't know of was Richter since I wasn't that versed in Castlevania. But it made a lot of sense when it was clear he was the "Die, monster!" guy since I'd seen that scene passed around.

I'm a little late on this, but if Bandana Dee is gonna get a swap stance style (or something like that) if he gets into Smash, I think Spear and Parasol might be the best options for him.
It's actually quite convenient just how much Spear, Parasol, and maybe even Staff could be viable options for a swap-stance gameplay style.

Spear Attacks would be the all-around, Parasol Attacks could be slightly weaker, but quicker, and Staff attacks could be slower, but have the most range.
Though honestly, there's just enough versatility which could be considered with only the Spear alone regardless.

Richter is I believe, the only Ultimate newcomer didn't know.

I wonder if Smash 6 will somehow add a character I never heard of.
I would be genuinely surprised if they add a character i don't know about next game, like not even hearing about their name tier, i feel like i've been too active in Ult speculation from start to end for that happening nowdays, i also been in gaming forums for a long time so i know plenty of characters/games i've never played just for that reason alone.
Ritcher was probably only unknown to me because after Snake's cut in Smash 4 i didn't really look into Konami content because i though Snake and by extension Konami, was never going to return back then.

Smash 64 was my introduction to :falcon64::ness64::samus64::fox64::link64::kirby64: I didn't own many games outside of SNES and N64 Mario games Pokemon Blue

Melee of course I didn't know FE :marthmelee::roymelee: but also :icsmelee: because I never owned an NES, and my friends who did only had Mario/Duck Hunt and a bunch of licensed shovelware like Bart VS the World and obscure stuff like Nightshade: the Claws of Sutekh.

Brawl obviously introduced me to:lucas: but I also didn't know :rob: nor :ike:

And everyone else from then on I knew except for the specific :4wiremac:alt for Little Mac and :ulthero4: alt for Hero

Quoting myself from the unpopular Smash opinions thread:
As unlikely as it probably is, I think Crash Bandicoot and Ryu Hayabusa both seem like characters who would make sense to be in the base roster of the next Smash game.
More accurately, for the next game, I was thinking that Hayabusa could be the Simon Belmont and Crash could be the Sonic; characters who get in for their legacy on the NES and a competitor’s console, respectively.

Characters I didn't know:

Smash 64: :ultsamus::ultfalcon::ultness:

I think I'd at least heard of Fox, but I can't remember the timeline between playing Smash Bros. for the first time and a friend of mine renting Star Fox 64. I hadn't played a Metroid game before (my Super Nintendo was a hand-me-down, so I didn't play Super Metroid until the Wii), and F-Zero and Earthbound were pretty obscure.

Melee: :ultmarth::ultroy::ultgnw::ulticeclimbers:

I'm not 100% sure about Sheik, but I definitely had Ocarina of Time by that point. I didn't beat it until the past few years, but at the very least, I'm guessing I'd beaten the first three dungeons. (though I'm not entirely sure) I hadn't heard of Marth, Roy, or Fire Emblem in general (and I wouldn't play a Fire Emblem game until Awakening on the 3DS; the perma-death mechanic kept me out of the franchise). I'd played a Game & Watch Gallery game on the Game Boy, but I think I mainly stuck to the Mario versions of the games. I definitely hadn't heard of Ice Climbers at the time.

I think, beyond that point, I'd at least heard of the characters going into future Smash games, between internet access, Nintendo Power subscriptions, and a greater involvement in the Smash speculation discussion. (I hadn't played any Metal Gear games when Snake was announced, for example, but I knew who Snake was from Nintendo Power articles)
