I think including a character just to check off a race from the series would be a bad idea and incredibly forced. Like, I love Saria, I love Medli, but having them in Smash? I'd rather not..I'd rather have more impactful characters rather then one included just to show the diversity of fantasy races in a series.

HOWEVER, I think they could pull a Pokémon Trainer by radically revamping Young Link into his Majora's Mask version and swapping one of his moves for Mask Transformations with Deku, Zora, and Goron in addition to his default Hylian form along with Fierce Deity Link as his Final Smash.
That'd be awesome and I'd instantly main him over "Link, but small, but faster than the other small Link."

Buuuuut, the issue then becomes a Ganondorf 2.0 thing where you're going to have people that just like Young Link as he is and don't want a moveset that changes towards canon since it doesn't fit what they like about the character.

In all honesty, it's what the fanbase deserves.

It's incredibly popular in China and South Korea. It's western fanbase is also largely underplayed much like DQ's was. It's outside the Smash bubble, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in the western anime community that doesn't know what Touhou is.
a lot of people underplayed us dragon quest fans FYI there are a bunch of characters who have fans and if they hear that they had the chance to get in they will come out the woodworks to defend their character / support them i still remember the bull that is banjo is brave lol

I'm surprised Tingle isn't brought up more, considering his notable absence from the Assist Trophy lineup and his having a solo series in the East that's seen success.

I know he's on Great Bay but, Toon Link is on Spirit Train.

Both of those franchises that exemplify the Smash echo chamber the most to me. Shantae's popularity seems to stem entirely from Matt Bozon campaigning hard. The games make very little splash when they come out, and I only see the character brought up in the context in Smash. The conversation around Shovel Knight quite often centres on the game, even if I do think its indie star has faded just by virtue of being 5 years old at this point.
The first Shantae was a late-life Game Boy Color game that came out after the release of the Game Boy Advance and before 'Indies' were popular. Publishers didn't consider her marketable because she's not a guy and suggested making her one. It was doomed from the start. The second game was well received and more of a commercial success. The third game was one of the top sellers on the Nintendo Eshop. The 4th game had a Kickstarter goal of $400k and almost doubled that. The series keeps growing in popularity and for good reason: the games are consistently solid and have a classic Nintendo feel to them. People want her in Smash because she'd fit right in and because it started on a Nintendo platform and has been on them ever since. Personally, I was introduced to the character in a different indie game (Runbow), but she's had cameos in more than one. After buying and actually playing her games, I completely understood why people wanted her in Smash. Plus, it's hard not to root for an underdog that came back from the brink of failure. She looks cool, too.

No, they aren't.

"Independent video game development, or indie game development, is the video game development process of creating indie games; these are video games, commonly created by individual or small teams of video game developers and usually without significant financial support of a video game publisher or other outside source. "

Their dev teams are upwards of 50+ people at this point. They make games for companies like Nickelodeon and Disney. They JUST made a game for ArcSys.

They're about as indie as Capcom at this point. Them continuing to call themselves "indie" is just bull**** PR trying to make it seem like they're still scrappy underdogs.

Am I the only one who wants a Palico more than a monster hunter?
Hey guys?

I’m in the process of making a wish/prediction list for the Smash Fighter Pass/Extra DLC and I can’t decide which Namco & Capcom characters to use, I could use some suggestions.

Namco: Agumon, Lloyd, or Heihachi?

Capcom: Phoenix, Leon, or Monster Hunter?
Namco: Yoshimitsu
My personal pick would be Rondoline. If I have to choose from your list, then Lloyd, but Velvet's design appeals to me more.
Capcom: From your list, Monster Hunter

If an Overwatch character isn't FP5, I don't think one is getting in Ultimate. This is based on the assumption that subsequent DLC was chosen after Ultimate's release. The game has seemed to die down from what I've seen.

Like is Touhou ZUN's only job?
Zun himself is a bit of a recluse. Far as I know, it's something he does for fun and he does have a day job (I do know he used to work at Taito in the mid 2000's). About one official Touhou game is released a year (Spin off or Mainline).

When he sells the new games at Comiket does he come with thousands of copies or is if mostly downloaded?
They're physical, but he also sells digital on his website and recently began selling on steam. No idea how much he sells or prints and he's very unlikely to release any of that info because he's not in it for a **** measuring contest.

Touhou clearly has a dedicated fanbase, but it also seems like it's far and away the most niche series I see brought up in speculation and I don't think its unfair to say that a lot of its impact hasn't necessarily been the games.
Probably, but it's not like the games have had zero impact. League of Legends references it and Touhou was a massive inspiration for Toby Fox and Undertale.

Those works for Nickelodeon and Disney are contracted works and aren't published by them. Neither is River City Girls, as an FYI, as that's published by ASW. Wayforward typically works as a contract developer. Their indie works would be titles like Shantae and Mighty Switch Force, Not their Adventure Time or Regular Show games.

Wayforward works on titles for larger companies/publishers to help fund their own projects (e.g. Shantae), which usually have noticeably smaller budgets and are self funded (and crowd funded). You can't compare them to Capcom (a company with almost 3k employees) who can make massive AAA games like Monster Hunter World, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter without relying on other publishers to finance them.

WF is odd in that they're bigger than what you'd expect for typical indie devs but way smaller than established publishers/developers like Capcom. Just because they're relatively successful doesn't mean they aren't indie.

You're either an indie developer or not. Just because they sometimes make their own games doesn't make them a sometimes indie dev.

And yet, funnily enough, the dev team that makes Shantae games is, like, 5x the size of the team that made Mega Man. Is Mega Man an indie character? He's not, because Capcom is not just the team that created Mega Man 30 years ago. Likewise, WarForward is not just the team that created Shantae in 2002. They haven't been an indie studio for a long time. Which means their characters aren't indie anymore.

**** those people.
I agree with what you're saying(if, not the way you're saying it). The 3 Links deserve a more diversified moveset.

Though I don't agree that giving Young Link a bunch of transformations is the way to do it. Getting rid of character transformations was one of the best things about Smash 4, and it sucks that Pokemon Trainer brought them back.

Being serious, I completely agree. The Smash fanbase, this thread included, loves to speculate around a core set of like, 5-10 characters at any given time, with those characters changing depending on who gets in and what popular hearsay is going around. We ought to consider much more than the popular first and third party picks of the time, lest we get blindsided by another Simon, Joker, or Terry.
Agreed completely. And this is exactly why I keep bringing up Story of Seasons. It seems exactly like the kind of franchise that people ignore now but were it ever revealed to get a character the discourse would suddenly change to how it totally makes sense in the same way that the conversation changed about Terry almost overnight. Because in a lot of ways I think it does make sense. It just isn’t a franchise most Smashers are particularly pushing for.

They're an independent developer. Otherwise they wouldn't work on licensed titles for other publishers to help pay for their lower budget games.

And yet, funnily enough, the dev team that makes Shantae games is, like, 5x the size of the team that made Mega Man. Is Mega Man an indie character? And who assembled and funded that small team? A then decade old electronic manufacturer that merged with another corporation. MegaMan isn't an indie character.

With today's technology, someone like me or you could more easily and affordably make a game like the first MegaMan. But back then? Not a chance.

"Indie" does not mean one person made it. All it means is "independent" i.e. something is independently owned, so even if Shantae's games have a fair number of people working on them, they still count as indie as Shantae does not belong to any of the publishers that WayForward may work with.

Personally I think trying to gatekeep who's indie and who isn't based on number thresholds is a bad road to go down on.

He's absolutely entitled to do this, but it is one of those interesting stats where people rank Shantae and Reimu as the two most likely indie reps to be in Smash despite there being little evidence beyond things like "loyal to Nintendo" or "massively popular in Japan". But Nintendo themselves have told us the indie games that have done best on Switch and it's titles like Undertale and Shovel Knight, and more recent games like Hollow Knight, Celeste and Dead Cells.

I absolutely cannot deny the longevity of Shantae or the sustained popularity of Reimu and Touhou. I just query why they're brought up as the front runners when we can see how successful Undertale and Shovel Knight have been, and they still only just managed to be an AT and a costume.

Hey guys. I have a very exclusive leak here, which not only spoils the fifth character of the Fighter's Pass, but also content from Pokémon Sword and Shield. Proceed at your own risk.

GrookeysFinalEvolutionSmall.png

This is Grookey's final evolution. The "DK" on its tie stands for its name, Dgrookeys-Kfinalevolution.

I was bored so I decided to make dlc wishlist, so it's not a prediction, just some characters I think would be cool.

Fighter Pass 5# Doomslayer

Fighter Pass 2:
Geno
Leon/Jill
Shantae
Ryu Hayabusa
Crash

Fighter Pass 3:
Lloyd
Spyro
Sora
Phoenix Wright/Dante (not sure which namco rep to go for)
Rayman

And for ****s and giggles I'm going to throw in Fawful as a random extra character.

Namco: If it were someone from Bandai Namco, the only two franchises that I am certain would likely be repped for Smash would be between someone from the Tekken or the Tales series.

Capcom: Personally, I do think that Resident Evil or Monster Hunter would be candidates for sure. Although it is possibly unlikely, but if they were to add another character from the Street Fighter series, then I would opt for Chun-Li.

Sans being a Mii costume and Shovel Knight as an assist trophy despite their popularity does make me wonder how Sakurai views indie characters. These two characters come from some of the best selling indie games around, yet neither of them made it to playable status. Could Sakurai only be reserving fighters for triple A publishers? It could also be a cost related issue that prevents indie developers from getting their characters to be fighters.

If so then we'll probably only see indie characters appear as Mii costumes so here is a small list of indie characters and what mii costume they could be.

Brawlers: Shantae... that's all who I can think of
Swordfighters: Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, Hat Kid, etc.
Gunners: Reimu, Quote, Cuphead, etc.

Maybe Rhythm Paradise could be another obscure, more "Japanesey" franchise people berate Nintendo giving Fighter lip service to? Tibby's lack of spirits despite being the main character of the last game is kinda odd.
I know Crash is bigger, but Crash without Spyro is like peanut butter without jelly.
Not to Japan it ain't.

TBF, Undertale and SK are like, barely getting out of the "single game" territory at this point in time, right? Name me one of the third party characters with such a "compact" legacy, maybe Bayonetta, though she was also supposedly a ballot request? (Geno, if he gets in, may be a special case too?). Minecraft kinda has its thing in not needing a sequel (alongside some spin-offs, though all but one of those are currently upcoming), and Shantae can at the very least say she's had a series of games put out.

A part of it is how relatively new these games are. Some of the games you mentioned are less than five years old and don't have a proper sequel to their initial title, we don't know what their future outlook might be. Touhou is over 20 years old with over 25 official games and it's still growing and still getting new fans to this day. It impacted the doujin scene (which you could say is the Japanese equivalent of western indies) very heavily that it became an important part of the doujin history in Japan. The Touhou series has a legacy, is still popular, and is still getting new titles. At the time of writing this post the Touhou series has had 10 official games released overseas with more on the way, and even before these games were released in the west there already was a sizeable western fanbase who were acquainted with the series.

I don't think being an icon nearly matters as much as people seem to think it does and it's very subjective on what is and isn't an icon.

"Disappeared" is a bit hyperbolic. To me, Shovel Knight and Undertale are both novelties at this point in the history. Their futures as franchises are unknowns. The thing with Smash is that I've always found the rosters to be timeless and I feel Sakurai has never been the kind to add characters because they are popular right here and now. To give an example of where my thinking is going, it's similar to why Leonardo DiCaprio took forever to win the best actor Oscar despite being nominated several years in a row. It's moreso that the award itself isn't a "here in the moment" award and it's much more of a life time achievement award. It's why more storied actors get it far more than younger ones.

At the end of the day, this is still one game fulfilling promises from the original Kickstarter.
You really don't get much more "lifetime achievement" than Shovel Knight, as it's kind of one of the landmark titles for indie games. Calling it and Undertale novelties is just plain wrong, but hey, you do you.

Fate has called me again to this very thread. Now for my banter for today before I sleep. And no, it won't be about female character debates...yet:

Isn't anyone tired of seeing the same picks over and over again?

Now, before you do your callouts, I'd like to say that the newcomer speculation is super homogenous. Like, every day, I wake up, and all I see are the same old songs and dances. Haya this, Dante that, Doom Slayer this, Geno that.

Like, can't anyone think of someone else? It's getting boring to see myself debate against the same characters.

Also a little hot take before I sleep: If you want Dante, you want to break the game. You want another Bayo, and you want another Smash 4 EVO 2018 Grand Finals that we don't speak of again. As much as you would want stuff for the casuals...think of the competitive party here, like me.

If Dante gets in Smash and is broken then that's the balance team's fault, not Dante's lmao

I've said it before and I'll say it again: instead of complaining about the stagnation of discussion, being up topics yourself! Just the other day I recall I was debating about Battlefield and FD stages while others talked about Capcom vs. SNK music potentially being included. Bring up discussion you want to have.

As for your hot take, bold of you to assume the dev team would make the same mistake twice, especially given how Dante can't do Witch Time. And honestly I don't care even if he's OP, bro deserves to be in the game.

Do you think she's like, the last Sega character they could put in before they'd just resort to another Sonic character?

Either way, it'd be interesting to see a proper Puzzle game moveset they'd make from her, and it's not necessarily giving Lip the cold shoulder because she came before and is more important and popular, maybe?

Maybe there's not much point in speculating anymore.
-90% of the big fan wants are already in
-Basically anything can happen, as proven time and time again. No character is really off the table
-New content will keep coming to the game for who knows how long

We're in the dark. But talking about Smash is kinda addictive. Like playing Smash.

Who do you want to talk about though? The thread obviously has favourites, same as any Smash speculation forum. Conversation has obviously stagnated which is why the conversation goes off on so many tangents at this point.

But if you have an idea that we haven't discussed to death before then absolutely try and start a conversation around them!

So you're telling me that instead of just whining around, I should go start a forum up in this joint. Because that is what I'm gonna do in the future. You're telling me I'm a whiner who just complains about everything. I'm not perfect, but please don't be too aggressive.

I mean, I suppose there are probably some other choices as well, but yeah, I think she's probably the most significant Sega character that isn't a Sonic character that is yet to be playable in the game.

She'd also bring in a pretty unique moveset as the puzzle genre hasn't really been properly explored yet in Smash. So yes, I think she'd be a great addition. Especially if we can't have Lip.

Honestly, as far as another Sega character go, I think it's a coin toss between her and Kiryu. Puyo Puyo and Yakuza seem to be among the last few series Sega wants to push these days aside from what's already in Smash.

Plus, the only puzzle character we have so far is Dr. Mario. I think the team would get a lot more puzzle-based moves out of someone like her than anyhing first party.

I can understand how an outsider might see the reasoning of "popularity in Japan" quite dubious, but Touhou is something special. I recommend watching this 10 min. documentary on Touhou. Just to give some basic insight on what it exactly is.
Being a video game franchise made by a single person, with virtually zero advertising, spread mostly by word-of-mouth, while still being as popular as it is, makes it very unique as a video game franchise. If you want physical evidence of its popularity, Touhou eclipses every other franchise when it comes to fan-made artwork and music remixes. Fact of the matter is, you really can't directly compare it to other series with standard parameters like review scores, or sales, because to many people, Touhou means so much more than that. Whether this makes it deserving to be honored in Smash is entirely subjective. I think it definitely does.

Arle is one of my most-wanted. Puyo Puyo Tetris is one of my favorite games ever and she's so fun and cute! That said, I would pop huge for Eggman. It's hard to decide which I want more honestly since I love Sonic as well but Arle wins out just by virtue of being from an unrepped series.

Kiryu or Majima would be super cool too. Kiryu represents an unrepped archetype and Yakuza is huge right now.

The reason why everyone's talking about the same characters usually has to do with how people react to outliers.

The community looks at patterns for precedence to try to predict who's coming next.

Doomslayer? Grandfather of FPS games, sort of like Ryu for fighting games
2B? Highly popular modern gaming icon from a critically acclaimed game, sorta like Joker and Bayonetta
Crash? Huge gaming icon from the 90s, heavily associated with PlayStation and is featured in an anticipated remake, not much different from the likes of Cloud.
Monster Hunter? Huge series in Japan, gaining traction in the west, like Hero
Ryu Hayabusa? Koei-Tecmo being thd last major japanese company without a playable character that people are jumping onto since SNK's Terry Bogard snuck in under the radar

It's easy to latch onto the same ideas, especially when they make a ton of sense.

Thank you for that.

I was going to add some banter, but I'm reserving that for a thread I'd like to start. Can someone teach me on that? Sorry if it's off topic.

Eggman's kinda the one big Sonic character left without a noticeable roadblock of Assist Trophy or Mii Costume in his way, though he does appear prominently in the image for Spirits mode, mind you. His shtick might be a bit reminiscent of Bowser Jr's, but could he still be a widely-accepted second choice for Sonic even over Tails or Shadow? Both of which may have had more fan demand? He does happen to be the only one that's been with the ol' blue blur since the beginning, maybe giving him that importance over even Tails? Though maybe it'd be a little awkward with fellow evil scientist antagonist Dr. Willy just being an Assist Trophy :4pacman: But a neat second Sonic character getting in is a neat second Sonic character getting in!

At the end of the day, this is still one game fulfilling promises from the original Kickstarter.
True but these promises ended up becoming four entire games the size of the base game, and I think the last of them are going to release next year. After that they'll be able to make something new for Shovel Knight themselves (on top of the new spin off and board game). I'll bet you the series will have proved its longevity by the time the next Super Smash Bros. game starts up its casting call.

Eggman's Final Smash will be him convincing Knuckles that the opponent(s) are trying to steal the Master Emerald, and then steals the Master Emerald while Knuckles Beats them up and uses it to fire a laser at all of them. (Or he just flies away in his mech and the cinematic ends with Knuckles's face as he realizes that he's been tricked again whilst punching someone.)
