Joker didn’t steal the invite. Remember? Morgana specifically said they were invited; “invited to steal the greatest treasure of all”.
So the smash invite was for them and I guess they we’re going to steal something else; like Smash Champion status or something lol.
You mean that Joker, MKLeo and Sakurai were involved in an insider job to make sure MKLeo would win EVO 2019 and dominate competitive with Joker?!
Shock from saudi prince buying SNK
Quoting this for clarity:
There was a problem fetching the tweet
It is only 33% but that doesn't change who's involved.
Bear with me on this one, this is going to be long (
this is not mentioned by SNK's homepage at the moment):
In 2015
SNK's was bought out by 37 Games (browser / mobile game dev based in Guangzhou) and Orient Securities (Shanghai-based bank). 37 Games and Orient pumped money into Ledo (and its "parent" Zheyuan Culture... it gets complicated) and then used Ledo to buy SNK. 37 and Orient are the two companies still listed by Zhuge and SNK's Wikipedia page. It was
Ledo that listed SNK shares on the Korean Kosdaq in 2019. SNK also has a separate Chinese listing in Beijing (SNK's English company profile page mentions the Chinese office by name under the "Company History").
Here are
SNK's Korean shares as of April 2020. It's that which the Korean article (and subsuquent articles like Kotaku) quote.
This is where the talk's coming from. The key people buying 33 % of SNK's Korean shares here are Mohammed Bin Salman's (Saudi Crown Prince) and his Electronic Gaming Development Company (EGDC). EGDC is apparently a subsidiary of MBS' MiSK Foundation. So in other words: MBS -> MiSK - > EGDC.
I'm lead to believe that we're talking SNK's Korean shares since the initial Korean article the tweet's linked to did not recieve that much spread, and if we were talking SNK's overall shares SNK themselves would've no doubt talked about it more openly. Zhuge would've also mentioned it by now - he hasn't AFAIK.
Again,
it's only 33 % of SNK's Korean shares it appears. Yes, the news came out of the blue, but there were apparently existing signs. SNK have done quite a lot with MBS and MiSK -
SNK's CEO visited Riyadh in 2017, signing a partnership with MBS' Manga Productions (#CreativeNaming) and even giving MiSK's Secretary-General a custom Neo Geo.
SNK have also worked with MiSK on an internship program last year. And apparently MBS is also a KOF fan.... um, huh.
Beyond the skeletons in the closet issues (which are many given MBS' current hand in the really messy geopolitical pie, lets leave it at that for the sake of this thread), I speculated in the Discord server that SNK propably would accept it mostly because we're talking about a filthy rich corp to begin with, and releasing games easier in the Middle East a second place. There are a couple caveats (editing my posts there):
* The first caveat is related to how SNK's stuck rather closely to Tencent as a result of the post-2015 ownership (despite not being directly owned by Tencent), and that is we'll likely see them regularily involve themselves with MBS' Manga Productions (Again, #CreativeNaming). Citing the press release from SNK when their CEO visited MBS' manga and video game conference Riyadh in 2017: the CEO talked about the Chinese content industry's growth. I wouldn't entirely be surprised if MBS wants to gain a foothold there...
* ...Waaaaaaaait a second. One of KoF XIV's DLC characters -
Najd - is a collab between SNK and Manga Productions.
Her (code)name is even a nod to the Arabian region with the same name. Alerting
Sari in case, because this seems to have flown under many radars.
* The second caveat relates to Mai: I don't think she'll be censored in most regions considering that
Najd appears in the same promo art as the decidingly-less-dressed Blue Mary. But if SNK wants to see more releases in the Middle Eastern region, well they're going to probably do so in at least some ME countries. Some, mind: the ME is currently fractured and I wouldn't be surprised if that extended to the video game sphere. To name an example: the Saudi PlayStation store is apparently hated by the local PlayStation fanbase for a number of reasons, with banned games and
Fall Guys seeing a late release for no apparent reason being two issues. Meanwhile, the UAE (Dubai) is much more lenient with game releases, and
Dad of War was one of the most popular games bought from its stores (and consequently, one of the most popular titles in the ME region at large) in 2018.
I'm not as familiar with the Middle Eastern gaming industry as I am with the Chinese, but that region's video game playerbase is growing very quickly. It's still plagued with weak internet infrastructure, but that doesn't prevent mobile games from being very prevalent there. Nintendo does sell Switches to the Middle East via a local distributor (parts of the region officially, but there are also unofficial Switch imports I'd imagine). And like how the PlayStation has found a foothold in the region, so has Nintendo gained a somewhat small but very much active foothold there too.
Whew, this was absurdly long. And complicated.
So.......how about a new subject to speculate? What do you think the more character-like Mii costumes, like Bomberman, Sans, Cuphead and Vault Boy, could mean for future content and games? I mean, considering their willingness to make the costumes look much more like the character and whatnot. Think their willingness could have an impact on future Mii costumes and alternate costumes/colors in future games and whatnot?
While the Mii costumes are likely to stay that way at least for this game, I'd argue that Bomberman could be one of the cases where they might consider giving him a playable status in a Smash 6. That does depend on if Sakurai and co. can find a moveset they think will fit him obviously, and that's completely up in the air really.
