Bandana Dee and Reimu's placements were pleasant surprises, being the highest-rated first party and indie character, respectively (Not counting Steve, who's in anyways). Especially impressive when you consider their competition, like Isaac, Waluigi, Shantae, and Shovel Knight.

The poll did take place before the ARMS tease so first parties weren't really voted for that much. Only 9 cracked the top 50. I summarized the results for the first parties when that poll's results came around.

Anyway here are the top 50 52 first parties from that poll for those that would rather have more first parties or just don't care about third parties.

Got back from work to say Atelier not being in contention for Vol 2 was to be expected but a bit of a shame. Ryza was probably too little too late for DLC since the reveal to release of the game were around the same timeframe as the supposed Vol 2 negotiation timeline.


That isn't to say Ryu Hayabusa is now the only candidate left in contention for a KT rep. You still got Dynasty Warriors characters like Zhao Yun and Lu Bu, and I'd even throw in William from Nioh as a darkhorse candidate as well.

I revised Source Gaming Mega Poll for what characters smashers want for Fighter Pass 2 and noticed that Steve/Alex got the 7th place, so I think that he/she can be considered a fan favorite character. He/She clearly had some fan demand, otherwise, he/she wouldn’t get to the top 10 (Master Chief got the 8th place, so it was the most wanted Microsoft rep).

And if we revised the poll made for the first fighter pass (before Banjo got announced), Steve/Alex got the 6th place. Its clearly that there was always demand for them. Its good that Nintendo has heard us haha. Hope they continue with this streak and get more fan favorite characters

Optimistic take: Nintendo isn't unveiling the Lloyd, Geno, and Monster Hunter mii costumes; because they plan on upgrading one/some of these characters to a full blown fighter.

Pessimistic (but slightly more realistic take): Nintendo isn't unveiling Lloyd, Geno, and MH costumes because they realize it's free real estate if they hold back 3 highly requested fighters (if they are costumes), people will just create free advertising for them. They know exactly what makes the community talk. Regardless of if someone like Geno gets promoted, I fully expect him to be in around at the second half.

Hmm... the closest I've been able to find is (sadly) a rumor post on the case. The amiibo subreddit thread mentioned Luigi, Peach and Boo. Tried Wayback, but that only seemingly had results from 2015.

It isn't direct confirmation, but those two add up to "Seems so".

Zelda has a whole has argubly great reprsentation in Smash. Hell every mainline 3D Zelda has a stage in Smash. Its lack of characters compare to say Mario is due to the lack of reoccurring characters. Most Zelda games will always focus on Link, Zelda, and Ganon. The series doesn't have many recurring characters in fact a lot of its supporting characters and secondary villains are one offs.

The Zelda series still has some recurring major characters that could work in Smash as playable fighters.

Cucco - it could be the Piranha Plant of the Zelda series; it could be the first item to be upgraded to a playable fighter

To be fair, each voters could vote for 6 characters, so it's possible that the same person voted for multiple LoL characters. I agree that if the poll has been done more recently, LoL could have been higher, especially if it was done near the Trials of mana spirits event when people start talking about the LoL in Smash "leak".

The problem with franchises with no main characters is that it's hard to really tell how much they're popular. In that poll the same thing happen with Rhythm heaven. Karate Joe is the highest with 63 votes being in the 59 position. In total there's 8 RH characters in the poll: Karate Joe, Chorus kids, Rhythm heaven (probably for general RH character), Barista, Tibby, Tap trial girl, Marshal, and Reporter + wrestler. If you add them all, there's actually 159 votes for Rhythm heaven, which would put the franchise at the 33 position, right under Scorpion, Porky, Monster hunter and Sol badguy and just higher than Shadow, Prof Layton, Lara Croft and Shovel knight. Yeah... as mush as I like Rhythm heaven, just adding all the votes isn't really a good metric of how popular the franchise is, and I think it's the same thing about LoL. There's definitely some fans that have voted for the same franchise twice in those cases.

Because the circumstances that lead to M-rated game logos not being shown didn't happen until the period of time between Terry and Byleth.

With all the smoke around Hayabusa though, and the fact his trilogy is coming to Switch and PS4 early next year, I think his chances are better than ever. Say what you will about Verg, but he's supposedly heard talks with Koei for Smash specifically.
