It would get less people excited and put all the focus on Ryu himself instead of his franchise. I'm predicting that there will be no M-rated characters in FP2 whatsoever.
Ryu is the main character of Ninja Gaiden, though. The focus would already be on him, and I don't think anyone who wants him or would be excited for him would care about whether or not the series logo popped up in a reveal stream on a white background.

Plus, you could easily have a wide array of Ninja Gaiden content with him by just having a normal Challenger Pack. I don't think the loss of a logo would change the fact he'd bring a stage, multiple music tracks, and Mii costumes with him that would highlight multiple parts of his series.

Wasn't part of the goal of the DLC to make crazy complex fighters?
Yeah, if they wanted to make simpler characters the deadline for this pass would probably be June 2021, not December.

You've got to stop doubting literally everything, Riley. We've gotten two things you've tried to doubt already in this pass: A first party, and a western character.

It's Possible Riley might be a Reverse Leaker...whatever Riley says won't Happen, will actually Happen

I was doing research on this recently, and yeah, that's about the impression they gave with statements like this:

“It’s emblematic of the approach that Mr. Sakurai and the team are taking with the DLC. He wants characters that are unique, different, to bring them into the Smash Bros. environment. So it’s going to be tremendously exciting.”
That was Reggie talking about Joker. Grabbed it from this old Nintendo Everything article.

I don't see why we wouldn't get an M-rated character just because NA trailers. After all, we did get Altair, Vault Boy and Travis costumes.

If Mii costumes are too valuable to scrap out of marketing problems, then fighters themselves shouldn't cause a problem.

I've seen some statements that because all the stages were reworked, if we are going to get another character who needs every stage to be updated, this pass would be the time.

I cannot say if that's true or not, but if it happens to be... I no longer think my idea would take too much work. You start as Eevee, and he is able to evolve once per life, for final, into one of his 8 evolved forms.
  • STAT CHANGES: Think of this like Shulk's Monado arts, except it's a permanent transformation, until you die. All of them have stronger special attacks (because they are currently all Special Attack stat bearers- we could get stronger Smash attacks if we get a new Eeveelution that has stronger Physical attacks). Jolteon would also be much faster than the other Eeveelutions. Umbreon and Sylveon would both have the best special defense/Defense against others' specials. Leafeon would have the highest Defense/Defense against others' smash moves. Etc.
  • ATTACK CHANGES: Whereas Eevee might have a Sand Attack, the Eeveeltions would instead have firespin(Flareon), or Pin Missle (Jolteon). A take down from Eevee could turn into an Ice Fang (Glaceon) or Draining Kiss (Sylveon). These may come with their own changes. The aforementioned firespin would rotate around the opponents, trapping them there for a few seconds.
  • EVOLUTION: How do you evolve Eevee? Well, perhaps it would be hitting both L and R- but it could be something else. More importantly, NOT EVERY Eeveelution would be available at all times. For example, certain stages might dictate which ones are available, such as Vaporeon being definitely enabled on any water stage. There could be a mechanic related to time to indicate which Eeveelution you turned into. Ultimately, it would have to be a bit generic (because it would be unfair for pro matches for time of day in real life to determine evolution, as an example). However, the needed requirements would be based on the actual ideas of the franchise- time, location, friendship, happiness, tools available. There would be some sort of meter/avatar shown for Eevee to indicate based on where on the stage(location)/time into match (time) / opponent? (tools/stones) / what mode youre in (friendship) / damage given? (happiness). It would show you which Eeveelution you'd become if you decided to evolve right at that moment.
  • OPTIONAL IDEA--- Special Trait: Each Evolution would have an ability. Just to throw out some ideas- Vaporeon would never drown, and would even turn invisible when in water (like how the anime did acid armor, combined with an ability of Swift Swim). Umbreon and Espeon would both be slightly stronger in a team environment (they both evolve from friendship), but they'd have additional abilities. Sylveon, as an example, would reflect "status" with it's magic bounce- so Jigglypuff would put itself to sleep instead of Espeon, Ivysaur's Poison Powder would damage it, and Robin's dark...thing, well, it would just not work. The Eeveelutions could also utilize a type advantage, with Vaporeon having resistance to water attacks (like its ability water absorb). This adds more complexity for competitive play, and more fun for players.

This covers a fan favorite, many new types, and many generations, with the ability to update as new Eeveelutions come out. It also represents one of the most important parts of Pokemon, Evolving. It also covers new aspects of the series such as the day/night cycle, abilities, strategy of who to choose, and the stats. It also brings back type advantage in a way that is actually fun and strategic.

If you like this, ask me about my Team Rocket concept- it would add more of the missing Pokemon elements, particularly the capturing mechanic.
NGL I cant believe this only got two likes.

Sakurai himself literally said during Byleth's presentation that making the DLC fighters as unique as they can is one of their main goals.
There are still over 14 months left on this ride.
To put this into perspective, for the 4 remaining characters they are giving themselves as much time as the entire first pass + Piranha Plant. And they gave out this estimated deadline before covid, and no delays have been announced.

I was briefly looking through the best selling video game series to see what mega sellers aren't in Smash, and I am absolutely floored by how (comparatively) low the sales of Doom are. For such an influential game/series the numbers are just not there, I suppose that's what happens when a franchise goes on hiatus for so long.

Anyway, Tomb Raider is much bigger than I remembered. People still consider Lara a Western character, I assume? Or is it like Steve where people don't call him an Indy because the rights have moved to a different company?
doom didnt go on hiatus. it went on hiatus from making good games. doom came roaring back in 2016 but it went through some dark times kinda like mortal kombat did in the mid 2000s.

the last few characters id guess are:
yuri lowell
ahri- pc gaming icon from the biggest game on the planet.league champion
dante
lara

i can explain each one
yuri-is the biggest character from the tales franchise. hes also the character here im least confident in.

ahri- with steve now in we need to look at what other characters from prominent games this community has overlooked and league of legends has to be number one. this is a pick that globally would surprise people and make people happy. she has been around a long time and her moveset potential can include both her games and the movies/trailers she is in.
i do not think tracer will get in over her. while tracer is the symbol of Overwatch i think tracer is a character that cannot be faithfully replicated in smash due to how she works. even Sakurai has limits and rewind is an extremely rough thing to design for a fighting game. i honestly have no clue how it would work. the move heals her, repositions her, and restores resources assuming she had any. now remember she also has to work in both 8 player smash and online.

dante- reasons have mostly been repeated but to summarize: he is capcoms biggest character not here, he brings a style that is unique to himself (no dante and Bayo do not fight similarly) dante is very ground-based while bayo is an air based fighter. watch the combo vids on youtube from thier games to see the differences. dante also comes with an incredible music library and he would also be the ultimate execution character. dante is the posterchild of an entire genre of games that has globally popularity.

lara-you can make an argument shes the biggest character not in smash. her past achievements are incredible. she has had a resurgence to the modern gaming scene but has plenty of games that came out that were well received. her moveset can include items and artifacts she has recovered along with her guns. and on a programming side starting her with a base of zss or bayo makes her not a design nightmare. every character cant take the effort steve did. her costumes would include her pixel form and her modern look.

i have zero confidence in any more retro inclusions or in games not globally released.

If there is an M-rated character in this pass, I do think it'd be odd not to add the franchise logo or a logo from one of the games. Mii Costumes are one thing, but imagine "Dante" being the label for whatever stage they choose on the stage selection screen.

I don't have a strong opinion one way or another. Yeah, it does sound pretty stupid, but you also have to admit that it doesn't sound incredibly difficult to go four more characters without getting one from an M-rated franchise.

I doubt we'll get Tracer but I think "Rewind would be broken!" is a really weak argument against her.

Fighters get modified for Smash all the time. Remember how Steve couldn't get in because putting blocks everywhere would break the game?

Minecraft had the advantage of being on multiple Nintendo systems and was even promoted by Nintendo a lot, with special n3DS skins and even a Mario themed skin pack for the Wii U/Switch/3DS versions of the game. It's inclusion in Smash was a fairly forgone conclusion, we just didn't want it to happen before Banjo got in.

Meanwhile League of Legends has remained exclusive to PC/Mac and obviously there hasn't been any crossovers between it and Nintendo. It just feels too out there for me.

There has been talk of Wild Rift, a version meant for mobile and consoles, also coming to switch

also Riot’s job listings mentioned the switch at one point. Lemme find it

Whenever we see complex and unique characters: "That's impossible!"

Whenever Sakurai sees complex and unique characters:

"This is where the fun begins."

Didn’t Vault Boy’s article in the game mention Fallout too?

I think the “TRAVIS”, “VAULT BOY” and “ALTAIR” are only for the NA broadcasts. in the game itself they’re like “:drshrug: idgaf”
In game news alerts have the franchise name present.
It’s only video broadcasts as they are technically advertising.

The only thing that's too out-there is the edge of the universe. We will have the most ludicrous, audacious, bull**** frickery crossover in gaming history, and no restraints are gonna stop us!

"In the original game, Nero said a no-no word and made a no-no gesture. In Smash, we will have to settled for having him pull a giant bird out of nowhere, flipping it like a table, and saying frick."

Not sure if that's necessarily a requirement like some people seem to be treating it as, but he does seem to like crazy and loyal movesets. It's kind of his thing by now.
And also, Smash doesn't have the luxury of having most stuff typical 2D / 3D fighters have due to the relatively simple control style. Since A and B are the only two attack buttons and Sakurai didn't want to emphasize traditional combo strings, the typical Smash character only has 17 standard attacks (excluding grabs and miscellaneous attacks).

And by this point, complex / loyal movesets are the best way to make a character stand out. Especially now when we're 75-80 characters in. It wasn't as big of a concern back during 64 / Melee / one could argue Brawl, but by the time 4 came around it became more of a priority.

Sure, other 2D / 3D fighters have begun to experiment too, and that's because of a similar issue - Street Fighter's in its 5th iteration, and Tekken's in its 7th. Both games introduced some crazy characters / mechanics. Akuma in Tekken 7 is a good example since he's the first Tekken character with a super meter IIRC.

Meanwhile League of Legends has remained exclusive to PC/Mac and obviously there hasn't been any crossovers between it and Nintendo. It just feels too out there for me.
That's a good point against LoL historically - and that's why I've never been fully comfortable with calling LoL a frontrunner. That said, we'll have to see if Riot / Nintendo promote the probable Wild Rift port and the other LoL games that might come to the Switch; Riot made the decision to expand beyond PC / Mac recently (as in 2018 / 2019 recent), aside from Mojang which expanded beyond the computer earlier.

There has been talk of Wild Rift, a version meant for mobile and consoles, also coming to switch

Here (Riot's official job listing site). While the Switch port isn't outright confirmed by those job listings, the job listings require people familiar with the Switch as well as the PS4 and Xbone. The mobile version of Wild Rift's the one being prioritized, and its deep into beta-testing territory ATM (Edit: South Korea and Japan will begin beta-testing Wild Rift tomorrow. That's important since South Korea's one of LoL's biggest regions).

I'm a little more confident that Wild Rift will make its Switch appearance when Pokemon Unite's a thing.

There’s a line from the ESRB guideline section in particular that explains most things:

Companies must not specifically target advertising for entertainment software products rated “Teen,” “Mature,” or “Adults Only” to consumers for whom the product is not rated as appropriate.
So from this particular guideline franchises primarily rated M or AO (though I seriously don’t think anything rated AO is even on board for Smash) seems to be a warning for NOA hence why the Mii trailers have Smash x character. (T rated franchises I’m not sure about... isn’t Tekken primarily rated T?).
Since this appears to have begun after Joker, it’s why A. Mii logos for M franchises are character and not franchise related and B. Why logos no longer show up in advertising the pass.

T is fine. Tekken is rated T, heck the Hero presentation had E10 - T in the corner

M is restrictive and that’s why I guess they disallow advertising for M rated games

If a video has something like E10 to T it’s because there’s elements of a game rated higher. Hero in particular had a DQ11 advert while Byleth’s showed TH footage.
Terry’s was also rated T likely due to footage from various SNK games.
Prerelease footage also counts as before Smash got its rating footage from Melee was used hence those broadcasts were rated RP-T.

I have a question. How would lloyd fans react if we did get Yuri?
Pretty disappointed ngl
How would you guys feel about this being the final four? Ryu Hayabusa, Gordon Freeman, Crash Bandicoot, and Dante. It's my crazy prediction atm, lol. Though Geno and Master Chief remain alternative picks.
This would be a fantastic pass, but honestly it's too good to be true.

I didn't say it would be "broken," i said i can't think of a way to implement it at all. t simply does so much that in a fighting game i have no idea how it would conceivably work. Balance is only part of it logistics is a huge issue as well.

the smash team reprogramed every stage in the game to accommodate steve. thats a huge task to do already but its a static change. its very possible that the new changes caused by steve cause a series of glitches we dont know yet. Tracer rewind is something entirely different.

Dont switch the narrative now. steve was not expected by most to get in. the only character people were certain of would begrudgingly get in was byleth or another FE character.
League of legends has wild rift coming out which has not deconfirmed switch yet. game was announced a year ago but likely it wont be on switch until 2021.it has only been confirmed for "consoles" very strong rumors say it is coming to switch.

1. I think they Could Make Rewind work, but they would have to put like a Meter on it or something so people don't spam it. Rewind would probably Have you refresh at the Postion you were second ago, Revert the Damage done to you, and perhaps if you lost a stock you can even Regain it.

2. Steve was Actually kinda Expected from the Early days of FP1 Speculation. Once Banjo got in he kinda fell off, until well, he actually got in. It's the same Deal with Byleth where Byleth was expected as DLC until it seemed FP1 was 3rd party Only, but then Byleth got in anyway

Honestly, I think the only character kinda guessed at for DLC without leaks was Banjo, and Only some were predicting that. Between the War between Banjo and Steve and people thinking Banjo was Impossible, it wasn't widespread

Every other chaacter predicted either had Leaks like with Hero and Terry, Got in when they were not in Speculation Like Byleth, ARMS, and Steve, or were just not Predicted at all like Joker

NGL, even with that meter that still sounds broken, especially if you can regain stocks. I'd rather have Tracer be playable without that ability.
