I'd take ten pages of people telling me why they want Goku in Smash over another spicy hot take about how next Smash will cut clone characters, tbh.

If we're talking cuts again, I threw together this roster of "must-stays" a while back. These character choices are exclusively based on whether or not they show up in the CG segments of any Smash trailers besides their own newcomer trailers; If they do, then Nintendo/Sakurai actually considers them characters worth working with and interacting with other fighters beyond just promoting their own game.
These are based on Ultimate's trailers incidentally, without taking Smash 4's trailers into account.

Sometimes I hope Smash bites the bullet and non-gaming characters do become part of speculation. I just want an excuse to continue the Superman vs Goku debates but in Smash context lol

If that happens, the first IP that should have that honor is LEGO. Mostly because it would bring us full circle with the whole concept of the fighters being toys established in Smash 64.

Oh I forgot to mention this, I had a dream this night where I was watching a Nintendo Direct (unbelievable, I know), there was something about Among Us (I don't remember what exactly it was about) and then the direct hits the ending and the voice-over guy was like "And now, we end this direct by presenting to you with the trailer for the next challenger for Super Smash Bros Ultimate!", at which point I was like "OH ****" and watched intensely.

Right before the Smash trailer would start, the dream inexplicably ends.

And really, the feeling from the dream just ending is probably just like how I figure most of us feel nowadays about the lack of directs.

It probably isn't that simple. Not only does the game have to run well while docked but they now have to consider handheld mode. It doesn't help that the PS3 was notoriously hard to develop for meaning most devs had to either outsource or spend all of their time working with the hardware. (I wouldn't shock me if it was all excuses though)

I mean, I'm not privy to the exact specifics over at SE, but...

They're PS2 games and a PSP game. I'd be concerned for the resourcefulness of their dev teams if they couldn't get them working. Sounds more like they just don't want to bother ATM. :drshrug:

If SE really wanted Kingdom Hearts games on Switch they'd figure out a way. The fact that they won't even put the old KH titles that ran on the PS2 and PS3 on the service for download tells you everything about how much interest really Square Enix has. Given that this is the same company that can't even bothered to put NES/SNES Final Fantasy games for purchase (even the mediocre mobile versions) this really doesn't surprise me.

Really, any inclination to give them the benefit of doubt with efforts in development has dropped after how lackluster the Crystal Chronicles remake turned out.

Is this a joke?

If not, how does this deconfirm Sora? This is just for the Kingdom Hearts games, not Sora being in Smash. If the negotiations were succesful, I am sure Nintendo could put Sora in Smash easily.

We got Joker without any of the mainline Persona playable on Nintendo systems

Sora should be fine in this regard

Besides, technically even the Kingdom Hearts spin-offs are canon and extremely important to the lore so I guess you can say they're pretty much mainline at that point.

Sometimes I remember Tatsunoko vs Capcom and I start thinking the real reason Sakurai, and by extension Nintendo, don't want non-gaming characters is because they understand how much of a licensing and localization nightmare that sort of thing can become.

Certain Japanese developers do come up with some absolutely bull**** reasons to not put games on the Switch, people sometimes think I'm crazy for saying that since they assume they must operate on cold hard logic without human emotions and biases entering into the mix, but it's true:


In Nomura's mind mainline KH goes on Playstation and everything else gets spin-offs and it's probably not much deeper than that.

Honestly, it's only a matter of time until that rule gets broken. Sakurai? I doubt he'd ever do it, but whoever comes next might not have the same reservations.
