There's not much about the character choices in this leak that make me doubt whether or not it's valid. I mean, I don't think many of them are super likely, but I don't think there's much aagainst them either.

Main reason why I doubt this leak is because I have absolutely no idea how this person would be able to know specific content from the second pass that wouldn't come out until a year from now. The only DLC character who was leaked several months in advance was Hero, a character who was originally set for the base roster. Every other character was safely hidden until a few weeks before their reveal. Now I'm expected to believe this person knew multiple characters and many of the Mii costumes before the second pass even started? I'm skeptical.

Personally, I don't see why that would be an issue. Nintendo chooses the characters, not Sakurai, and Sakurai has stated that sometimes he meets with the developer, but most of the time Nintendo does the negotiations. Either way I don't think any of the negotiations would be made public anyways. Besides, the rights could've been negotiated by Nintendo rather than Sakurai, with Sakurai going to Yoko Taro later on for pointers for 2B's development.
Nintendo chooses the characters, but Sakurai is involved in negotiation with the developers. The statements from the DQ team and the Rare guys indicate as much.

But believe me, I've heard the theories about how maybe Sakurai wasn't involved, and how maybe Taro wasn't involved... I think they'd both be involved. So no, it's not a nail in the coffin, but I don't think it's a good sign for 2B.

Going by the interview about Hero, Sakurai is actually pretty involved in the pitching process for the character.

Originally, Masahiro Sakurai didn’t think it was possible for Dragon Quest to come to Super Smash Bros., but Nintendo believed there was a chance it could happen. So Sakurai made a presentation to Square Enix, really hoping to get Hero for Ultimate but being open to other characters, such as monsters, to appear instead.

Much to his surprise, Square Enix agreed to allow Hero pretty quickly, “partially because of Sakurai’s passion, and partially because the ‘best of’ element in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was quite similar to that of Dragon Quest XI S.” Yuji Horii acknowledged that it would have been difficult in the past to allow Hero to battle other heroes, but the rise of games like Dragon Quest Rivals (Japanese digital card game) has normalized such things.
So more then likely, Sakurai would be in early negotiations for the character.

Ok so here's an interesting idea, take your current backlog and put some protags from them in Smash when applicable. For me, that'd be Rayman, Kiryu, Miriam/Zangetsu, Deus Ex protag (I know nothing about this franchise lmao), Gordon Freeman, Lara Croft, Master Chief, Kain from Legacy of Kain, Adol Christin and Estelle Bright. Looking at my list, I'd say I'd be happy if a few of these got in

Might've missed some, but that's the majority of them. I left some games out because the protag isn't necessarily the central focus, or they already have significant representation in the game.

Yes, I am aware of the significant size of my backlog. With the additional time I have due to quarantine, maybe I can knock a chunk of it out. This'll probably last me a significant amount of years though, which is good because I find myself increasingly less interested in newer games for the most part, aside from some certain series (Kingdom Hearts, Persona, and Nier). In case any of you are worrying about my wallet, I bought a large majority of these games (like 80%) at a significant discount or am emulating them.

I'll probably scoop up some more Playstation games since Playstation is always running flash sales on a large amount of their first and third party titles, which means I can get them for 50% or more off (take notes Nintendo).

I am french and I say the french should not be trusted, ESPECIALLY those on that site x) (I know it 'cause I lurked there for a bit when I was younger, it can be quite the hell hole there)
As much as I would love to FINALLY see Level 5 representation in Smash (and Layton as a character of course) I still will remain pessimistic, after all I've already abandoned all hope for Layton to ever be in Smash at this point even with still 5 fighters coming :')
Lets go Layton fans, lets go

...Who?

I'd look it up, but I fear of what Google Images would give me.
Short answer: Plok is never not enraged.jpg

Long answer: An angry SNES mascot platformer who rids the world of fleas thanks to the power of FOOTIES and fighting game fundamentals. Also a great soundtrack by the Follin brothers. Even Miyamoto was supposedly impressed by the soundtrack.

But seriously, If you want to get an idea of how he'd fight, think Rayman before Rayman. He uses his detached arms and legs to throw out normals take out enemies. A lot of the game is based taking out fleas to get to the next stage, so the spacing game in it is up there for a platformer.

Other than that, he can turn into a buzzsaw, has a flamethrower, shotgun, jetpack and boxing glove type powerups to pull moves from.

Layton has the great misfortune of hitting his peak right before third-parties in Smash became a more common phenomena, so his popularity never got off the ground as well as it could've had the timing been different.

Though it sounds like things played out a bit differently in Europe.

At the least, wasn't he at least big during the Ballot era. I remember Smash 4 Layton was very Popular, I remember seeing him on alot of Smash 4 wanted fighter lists. Though I don't know if that transitioned to the ballot era though. I'm gonna assume it did

Layton has always been at his peak in Europe, heck, that's pretty much where Level-5 performs best asides from Japan.
Hino even had an interview stating as much.

Its mainly the US where the company has had some struggles to get their footing in.
So basically, their essentially to Europe what SNK was to China and Latin America.

There was some support but he was probably overshadow by other more popular third party.

My view on the Yoko Taro bit is that, when you think about it, if 2B isn’t earlier on the pass there’s no reason to meet and talk about gameplay yet.

Sakurai also mentioned awhile back that meetings would need to be delayed regarding certain fighters.

If 2B were Fighter 7, or even Fighter 8, it’d probably have an impact. But I don’t think they’re meeting upon acquisition of the license- they likely meet with the parties involved to work out design/gameplay discussions. They likely meet closer to when the work is to commence.

At least, that makes more sense to me than the dev team meeting with Yoko Taro and other devs about ideas regarding a character when they aren’t going to start work or have anything to present on in a meeting until roughly a year later.

Basically, acquisition and development meetings aren’t taking place at the same time, so in that sense Sakurai and Yoko Taro wouldn’t have to meet only to get licensing of the character. It seems plausible to me for those to be two entirely separate meetings.

Doesn’t mean I think 2B is a lock or something, I just don’t think that’s a done deal.

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind it if one of the choices was a more obscure platformer mascot, provided the game itself was actually kind of cool, like Plok or I-Ninja or some **** like that.

If they did go with a less popular platforming mascot, I think only one question would come to mind:

If we're talking Layton again, he always felt like a solid choice to me. Fairly large series, closely tied to Nintendo. Kind of modern. Comes from the surprisingly underrepresented(in terms of Smash) DS side of the game industry. And he's from the puzzle genre, something that doesn't have a ton of characters like RPGS and Platformers do. Granted I'd shill mostly for platformer and fighting game characters as it is. But that's just on my personal tastes.

A sister of mine even likes his games and Phoenix Wright. So that's another reason I'd be cool with him showing up.

Worst case scenario is that he doesn't light the internet on fire. But you could say that most of the DLC hasn't done that, outside of Banjo and Hero for the East and West respectively. And Terry being the people's champ for South America and the FGC.

Not really. Layton was most popular post-Brawl, and probably at the outset of the Smash 4 phase, which is not the best time to be popular for a third-party, considering none were explicitly included based on popularity from that era. By the ballot I don't recall his popularity being anything noteworthy.

My view on the Yoko Taro bit is that, when you think about it, if 2B isn’t earlier on the pass there’s no reason to meet and talk about gameplay yet.

That's really not the picture painted of how the process works from the DQ and Rare reports. The key players regarding the character all seem to be involved from pretty much the inception, or very soon afterwards.

I mean Yoko Taro is to Nier what Yuji Horii is to DQ and Gregg Mayles is to Banjo, and those guys were involved since the negotiations kicked off.

So basically unlimited pain. Good to know.

On a more serious note, how would he play in Smash? Would he have any special gimmicks, or would he be more simple in nature?
William has a lot of options in Nioh. There are katanas, dual swords, spears, axes, and kusarigama to name a few different weapons. Each of these has access to high, mid, and low stances with different moves and techniques. And that's not even getting into ranged weapons, Onmyo Magic/consumables, Living Weapons, and ki pulsing/management.

In terms of Smash, I'm not sure if William would be as complex to play as his source material. Most of the moves available to each of his stances could easily be worked into his tilts and smash attacks. Specials could draw on his fancier techniques, ranged weapons, and powerful consumable items with a set number of uses per stock. There's potential for a ki or stamina mechanic, but that might be too limiting in practice. It's difficult to say exactly how William would play because of the large number of different play styles available in Nioh, but I'm leaning toward a defensive punish heavy style. The only thing I can say with relative certainty is that he is unlikely to have good aerials or aerial mobility as the combat in Nioh is entirely grounded.

William also appeared in Warriors All-Stars so some ideas could also be drawn from that game.

I'll just do an abridged backlog, because my backlog is stupidly large. Also, I'll leave out cases where the most obvious choice is already in Smash (for example, Dragon Quest 8 with :ulthero2: or Dragon Quest 3 with :ulthero3:)

Switch

-Akira Howard (Astral Chain)
-Yuna (Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2)
-Zidane (Final Fantasy 9)
-Squall (Final Fantasy 8)
-Hat Kid (A Hat in Time)
-Kyoko (River City Girls)
-Agumon (Digimon Cyber Sleuth)
-Yooka and Laylee (Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair)
-the Knight (Hollow Knight)
-Cuphead (Cuphead)
-Rex and Pyra (Xenoblade Chronicles 2)
-Sol Badguy (Guilty Gear XX)

3DS

-Hades (Kid Icarus Uprising)
-Hawlucha? (Pokemon Y - I have no idea, so I just picked one that might be fun)
-Edea (Bravely Default and Bravely Second - I think that's a character in those games)
-Rayman (Rayman 3D)
-Yu Narukami (Persona Q2)
-Sora (Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance)

Wii U

-Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge)
-Wonder Red (The Wonderful 101)
-Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze)
-Elma (Xenoblade Chronicles X)
-Paper Mario (Paper Mario: Colour Splash)
-Shantae (Shantae: Risky's Revenge/the Pirate's Curse/Half-Genie Hero)
-Giygas (Earthbound Beginnings)
-Isaac (Golden Sun 1 and 2)
-Andy (Advance Wars 1 and 2 - I gradually bought any game that I might be interested in, since I was worried that they won't give as much notice for the Wii U shop channel closing down as they did with the Wii)

Wii

-Zael (the Last Story)
-Aeron (Pandora's Tower)
-Ghirahim (Zelda: Skyward Sword)
-Midna (Zelda: Twilight Princess - I haven't finished many Zelda games, though I've been trying to change that)
-Rundas (Metroid Prime 3)
-Hunter (Monster Hunter Tri)
-Wesker (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)

Gamecube

-Lara Croft (Tomb Raider: Legend)

Xbox 360

-Ezio (Assassin's Creed 2 - I've got that and 3, but I figure Ezio's more well known)
-Adam Jensen (Deus Ex: Human Revolution)
-Agent 47 (Hitman: Absolution)
(there's likely more than this, but I'm just going by what I remember starting but not finishing)

Playstation 3

-Aqua (Kingdom Hearts 2.5)
-Nathan Drake (Uncharted 1-3)
-Kratos (God of War 1-3)
-Sackboy (Little Big Planet)
-Mitsuru Kirijo (Persona 3)

Well, Minecraft also exists on Playstation and I don't foresee Master Chief showing up in any Sony IPs.
The point is that Banjo in Smash was the result of Nintendo working with Microsoft on the Minecraft ports, Craig Duncan said as much.

If they keep working with Microsoft to bring Minecraft to future Nintendo platforms (they will, otherwise it's a big PR disaster for both companies), then I don't see why they wouldn't be able to bring back Banjo.

So, do we all agree Plok would be an interesting choice?
His gimmick would be that quitting out from Smash Bros will make him disappear, making you have to re-download the DLC again every time you want to play as him. It would be a neat little reference to his game not having a damn save feature!

Excuse me. It's just very frustrating that the game is that long with tedious flea hunting stages and no way to save your progress.

Yes, it did open the door, but my point is that Minecraft will probably stick around as multi-platform regardless of the closeness between companies, as evidenced by its continued presence... everywhere, so it's not a great barometer to gauge the level of cooperation between Microsoft and Nintendo.

I mean, Minecraft is coming to PS5, isn't it? Minecraft Dungeons released on everything. But that's not evidence of Microsoft and Sony having anything close enough to anticipate true collaboration, because Minecraft is pretty exceptional in that it's never been exclusive in the first place.

I just think that 10 Pokémon is enough and there's no need for a new one as DLC. Lol.
At this point, it doesn't even serve the purpose of a promotional pick.

What person, at this point, that doesn't already play Pokemon games, is gonna go "Well, the first 10 Pokemon in Smash didn't get me. But now that there's ELEVEN I guess I better try it out." Not to mention, Pokemon is one of the most popular gaming franchises ever. It doesn't really need promotion.

And the converse is just as true. What Pokemon fan is like "Hmm, now that there's 11 Pokemon in this Smash Bros. thing, I guess I should maybe pick it up."

The same applies to FE. What FE fan that might pick up Smash hasn't already? And what Smash fan that might pick up FE hasn't already? These picks promote nothing.

And I mean, I can't speak for the French speculation scene, but Phoenix Wright and 2B are already popular in the American speculation scene. Layton gets his fair share of mentions now and again. Jibanyan is the only one who doesn't get brought up much. If the leak's goal is to get people talking about characters they weren't before, it doesn't hit that goal for American speculators.

I haven’t played those games yet but they seem pretty good, I might try them out someday. I think that’d be a fun Level-5 rep.

It would fit with everyone’s expectation of a lesser discussed character too. It’s not super well known but it’s not incredibly niche either; the first sold over 1 mil on PS3 & the second is making its way to 1 mil currently.

It's not about the number, it's about the character itself. A purchase based on a promotional Pokémon character would be more like "hmm. I quite like this soccer bunny (or spy lizard if they go with that instead) and it's one of the main partners you can have in the new game. There's also some new DLC coming out that I could get started with right away if I wanted to. Maybe I will check out the newest Pokémon game."

There's a much narrower net to cast conversely since it would have to be someone who has Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield, loves Cinderace (or Intelleon if they go with it instead), and doesn't already have Super Smash Bros. Although, considering Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield sold amazingly well and how big the Pokémon fanbase is on top of that, the DLC itself would likely sell really well.

EDIT: And of course, a newcomer from Pokémon Sword & Shield would at the very least keep the games in people's minds for longer so it's still promotional in that regard.

Actually I kinda can argue around that.

Let's say this hypothetical person plays Smash but doesn't play Fire Emblem.

Marth doesn't interest them.
Roy doesn't interest them.
Ike doesn't interest them.
Lucina, Chrom and Robin don't interest them.
Corrin doesn't interest them.
But Byleth does. They enjoy Byleth and find them fun. They want to find out more about Byleth.

They can then go buy Three Houses to see what Byleth is all about. This kind of thing doesn't work as well with non rotating casts. But when they character changes each game, they create brand new chances for advertising.

Honestly, I think Min-Min was probably the most promotional Character added to Smash Ultimate Honestly. She's promoting the ARMS I.P that currently, hasn't been in Nintendo Fans mind until the Smash Inclusion

Byleth was decided when Fire Emblem 3 Houses wasn't out yet, but She came out when the games was months old. Plus Nintendo specifically wanted a character from a game "People are Playing now", It wasn't even Fire Emblem 3H that was specifically chosen, it just happen to fit the criteria.

Does this also include Smash fans Like Ed Boon?

Yeah honestly.

If Ed thinks his characters aren't worthwhile unless they aren't in Smash then yes he needs to change how he thinks (granted he doesn't feel that way, this was almost a PR answer).

It's not that people shouldn't get excited about Smash inclusions or see it as an honor. People need to see that NOT being in Smash isn't some proof of lack of worth. Not every great character, Nintendo or Third Party is gonna be in Smash. They aren't worth less just because they aren't in.

Uh oh, guess what time it is?

Honestly, the one that kills this leak for me is the Xenoblade X port. Not only is there still that statement from Monolith Soft about porting it and the fact we just got XCDE, but this leak acts like it was already announced. If that were the case, someone (probably Rie Sonomura Rie Sonomura , no offense) would be freaking out over it for the next several days. Plus the usual overreliance on piggybacking, of course.
