Ehh... Seeing at all the Smash 4 newcomers together makes me realize how much better Brawl and Ultimate's roster was for me. First-party picks didn't feel as strong.

Just my personal feelings though. I'm sure there's a few people who liked Smash 4's newcomers more.
I know you love first parties, and I respect that opinion.

But

I'm willing to Dimension Falcon Punch through space and time anyone who look at Smash 4's newcomers and be like "Eh, idk man, We got Cloud Mother ****ing Strife, Ryu, Megaman, Pac-man, Little Mac is finally a fighter, Xenoblade is a wonderful gem on the Wii, so Shulk is amazing but **** It doesn't feel right without [Insert X first Party]."

No hard feeling my man tho, I just think that Smash 4 ****ing rocked the Newcomer when it comes to "Holy ****" newcomers announcement.

I sorta agree that the first party picks of Smash 4 didn’t tickle my fancy either.
To me, Smash 4 felt too much like “what is Nintendo up too today” and I felt all their picks (minus :4duckhunt:) were promotional. Not helping was the Smash 4 site saying “Want to learn more about X? Visit the site for Y for more details!”

Smash 4 had a lot of great ones IMO. Rosalina, Villager, Greninja, Palutena, Pac-Man, and Robin are pretty great IMO.

TBH the DLC was what was the weakest to me. Mewtwo, Lucas, and Cloud were cool, but everything else was...eh. Ultimate's done leagues better in regards to DLC picks IMO.

I got to thinking of all the First Party franchises in Smash with either a stage or a character (or both).

The First Party franchises with characters are...

  • Super Mario
  • Donkey Kong
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Metroid
  • Yoshi
  • Kirby
  • Star Fox
  • Pokemon
  • Earthbound
  • F-Zero
  • Ice Climber
  • Fire Emblem
  • Game & Watch
  • Kid Icarus
  • Wario Ware / Wario Land
  • Pikmin
  • R.O.B.
  • Animal Crossing
  • Wii Fit
  • Punch Out!!
  • Mii (Also counts for Super Smash Bros.)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Duck Hunt
  • Splatoon
  • ARMS
That's 25 different franchises. 26 if you count the Miis are Super Smash Bros. characters

To add to that, here are the first party franchises with only stages...

  • Electroplankton
  • Pictochat
  • Balloon Fight
  • Nintendogs
  • Find Mii
  • Tomodachi Life
  • Wrecking Crew
  • Pilotwings
  • Wii Sports
That's 9 more franchises, making a total of 34 (or 35 if you count Smash).

Why list the franchises like this?Well I'm trying to think of the largest first party franchises not included in either category.

Now that ARMS has a character, I think the largest Nintendo franchises that could feasibly include a character that don't have on are currently...

  • Golden Sun
  • Advance Wars (Famicom Wars, Battalion Wars)
  • Rhythm Heaven
  • Astral Chain
  • Dragalia Lost
  • Ring Fit Adventure
The largest franchises that couldn't feasibly include a character are...
  • Brain Age
  • Excite (Excitebike, Excitetruck Excitebots)
  • Style Savvy
  • Wii Play
  • Tetris (Eh.... kinda of Nintendo owned)
I tried to limit these picks to franchises who either had constant smaller entries or at least one big more successful entry. Do you agree that these are the largest franchises without a character/stage? Do you see any of these IPs as possible additions?

Yeah, I also found the first party choices in 4 pretty lacking. As far as I'm concerned, 4 was pretty much carried by guest characters like Mega Man, Cloud and Bayonetta.

So, to change topic a bit, I just found this template online about most wanted fighters to each big third party (not sure why Platinum is there tho because they don't really have any ip to them but wathever). It would be fun if other use share it (or if you don't want to to the montage just reply through text).
Some of this was a little tough for me, but I tried my best.

1595353321970.png

For Microsoft, I just put the characters I'm most familiar with. As you can probably tell, I'm not really a Microsoft guy, lol.

For "highly requested" characters, I just put popular characters that I'd generally like or be fine with.

Edit: I forgot to add Reimu and 2B to the "highly requested" section. I hastily fixed that, so it's a little sloppy.

That reminds me; R.O.B.'s the only series on the entire playable roster without a stage to accompany the character representing it.

Oh I bet they could make Excitebike a character if they wanted to.

Not Style Savvy? Why you gotta do Fly like that lol.

Anyways, Astral chain for Smash, let's goddamn do this.

Honestly at this point I don't see new first party ip being added anymore. Most of them are either dead with probably no revival planned (Golden sun, Advance wars), or got spirited after the base game launch (Astral chain, Ring fit). Rhythm heaven and Style savvy are probably the one that are in a better position because they're not totally dead (especially Style savvy, I could see that franchise having a game on switch considering that Nintendo said that they had plans to bring DS and /DS franchises on Switch), but I still think it's unlikely to see them as DLC in Ultimate.

Ring Fit and Astral Chain got post-launch Spirits, so I'm afraid we may have to cut them out unless Sakurai feels like Jena Anderson or some random Chimera instead (Which is a shame, since I loved Astral Chain).

Logically, Dragalia Lost would be the frontrunner due to being unrepresented and being a mobile rep, but it may have competition from fellow Cygames IP Granblue Fantasy, which seems to be a lot bigger than Dragalia. The main question is if Nintendo feels like going big or promoting their own game, but if they got Cygames to develop Dragalia for them, I don't see why they can't go to them for a Grablue rep. That also begs the question of who wuld be the Granblue rep; Gran's the hero, but I've heard Katalina tossed around too. I don't know too much about Granblue, so I can't really say.

Out of the already-represented games, I'd say Golden Sun would have the best shot, especially if the rumors for Golden Sun 4/Remastered are true. Isaac was a popular request and still is, though his support has gone down after the one-two punch of Assist Trophies and the sudden interest in third-parties. Still, I think Isaac's got a pretty good shot, since Min Min was chosen because of Yabuki favoritism, not because of Spring Man's Assist.

I'm gonna say Brawl.

While Ultimate has some of my faves join, Brawl cemented characters that were Nintendo All Stars and expanded the idea., giving us characters such as :wario:, :olimar:, :dedede: and introducing :snake: and :sonic:, expanding us to the idea of Smash as more than just Nintendo.

:rob:, :wolf:, and :pit: were fun as well, plus the Trophy Gallery felt like a true Museum of Nintendo history (plus the Chronicle)

Criticism, not enough new Nintendo franchises. We got 4, but it always felt like we could use more.

Eh.... both Excite and Style Savvy could technically have reps. Certainly wouldn't be any crazier than some of the other characters we've gotten so far.

I concede that some of them could have characters.

But I feel they are more likely to get a stage and only a stage.

Biggest toss-up between 4 and Ultimate.
Brawl was crazy when you get Sonic and Solid Snake And a great panel of first parties
But then Smash 4 just **** out Megaman, Pac-Man, Ryu, Duck Hunt and still, once again. Mother ****ing Cloud Strife
Ultimate go banana with a full veterant back roster and they just give out Simon Belmont, Ridley, K Rool and Banjo the three Hardcore smash fans requests, Give Chrom his chance,, Joker The modernization of JRPG, Hero the Grandad of all JRPG, Terry Bogard who's here to teach you that SNK is more than a manga and how much it influenced fighting games alongside Street Fighters.

Like, really, it feels like each games up- one another after each release and knowing that we still have 5 character left in ultimate if CRAZ-

Smash 64.

Hard to beat Mario, Link, Samus, Pikachu, etc.
**** it, I give up, he win.

Brawl. Personally, the only inclusion from Brawl I've never agreed with is Zero Suit Samus. Just never been a fan of how they completely 180'd the entire purpose of the zero suit segment in Zero Mission. I know Sakurai wanted to add a new Metroid character and whatnot, but ZSS just doesn't jive with me.

Brawl, with Ultimate as a very close second that will probably have surpassed it when DLC is done for.

Good amount of newcomers, striking a good balance between iconic characters from big franchises like Kirby and DK, some from the past generation in Ike and Olimar, and a few retro surprises like Pit and R.O.B..

Plus we got non-Nintendo characters for the very first time.

Ultimate has come closer to that level than 4, I think. Especially considering DLC is going for a longer period.

Idk man, I really dug 4's newcomers

The likes of :ultvillager::ultmegaman::ultrosalina::ultgreninja::ultpacman::ultryu::ultcloud:and of course my homie :ultcorrinf:, were all absolutely fun additions to the roster for me.

I will say though Ultimate's very much starting to give it a run for it's money with the likes of :ultinkling::ultincineroar::ultjoker::ult_terry::ultbyleth:and it definitely gets extra points for :ultminmin alone

I'd have to put 4's newcomers behind Brawl and Ultimate as well. Ahead of Melee though.

In retrospect the first party additions seem a little underwhelming and almost a bit self-serving. The third-parties do a lot of heavy lifting for that one, imo. I mean, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Cloud, Ryu. Probably the most impressive batch between the three games.
Oh yeah and Bayo was there too.

  • I imagine Ring Fit will get a character in due time, that game has really taken off.
  • Astral Chain seems like it's done well enough for a future as well.
  • Golden Sun and Advance Wars are both contingent on new games. And that's always going to be an uphill battle. But if it happens, they stand in good stead.
  • Rhythm Heaven is strange because knowing what we know, it seems like it should've happened by now. It will continue to warrant a character and potentially continue to not get one. Though the series' hiatus isn't helping.
  • And Dragalia Lost needs to branch out a bit to become a more serious contender, imo.
Though I disagree with Style Savvy being infeasible, I don't think it's nearly prominent enough to be plausible.

But I can't get behind any of those series having much of a chance for Ultimate. It'd have to be down the line.

Because I'm a shooter noob, does it make sense for Master Chief to have traps like mines or something? It feels like I see a lot of Halo clips that have people placing stuff on the ground as cover. Maybe a wall that eats projectiles? IDK, spitballing about something I know literally nothing about.
Halo 3 has that stuff. Trip Mines, Bubble Shields, Gravity Lifts, Deployable Cover etc.

Brawl and Ultimate have both been pretty good.

Variety is something that's very important to me, and both Brawl and Ultimate managed to add a new Mario, DK, Metroid, Pokemon, and FE character. We also got a few new notable franchises too. Brawl gave us KI and Pikmin, while Ultimate gave us Splatoon and ARMS. Third-parties were pretty good, but I feel like Smash 4 wasn't bad at this either.

Honestly it's hard to beat Brawl's newcomers for me.

Snake, Wario, Sonic, King Dedede, and Pokemon Trainer with all three starters as playable?

Brawl's cycle was ****ing insane. Ultimate may be close but it will depend on who the next DLC characters are.

Y'all ever think to yourself and realize Smash 4 was almost 6 years ago?

Man, time flies
I didn't think about that.

...until now, anyway.

As for the newcomer discussion, I'm going to have to give it to Brawl. It struck a good balance between adding characters to new and returning franchises (other games leaned more heavily in one direction or the other), added third party franchises into Smash for the first time (with Snake, who's one of the most fun characters to play as in my eyes, and Sonic, who was an incredible addition - I can't count the number of times that I watched that reveal trailer), and on a personal level, added Wario, Meta Knight, and Dedede, who I had wanted to see in Smash since the N64 game.

Ultimate is a very close second, though, and it could easily be first depending on how the DLC goes.

Say hello to my friend Trendsetter:

Style Savvy could absolutely have a character in Smash.

I feel like saying that the RE spirits were done to promote the Switch versions of 5 and 6 is a bit reaching. The event happened two weeks later, only Chris and Wesker are using artwork from those games, nothing about it specifically referenced those games, and it'd be the only time a spirit event was made to coincide with a port like that (unless you count the Trials of Mana remake). In contrast we've had tons of spirit events with seemingly no correlation to any events like River City Ransom and Warframe, so I think it's easier to chalk it up to something like that.
I don’t really see what difference it makes.

It got spirits within two weeks of it coming out, which is consistent with most other spirit events.

Three Houses and Devil May Cry did not.

My point was, if the argument is that DMC wouldn’t get spirits because “it’s a port”, Resident Evil disputes that.
