I actually really want this but I know that's never gonna happen because the series is nowhere near mainstream enough for a smash appearance.
Not trying to start any conflicts, but what do you mean when it is "nowhere near mainstream enough for a smash appearance"?

For anyone who wasn't aware about Valkyria Chronicles, it start off as a game series, then adapted into anime, manga, and have extra feature like a drama CD. Characters like Kurt Irving, Riela Marceris, Imca and Selvaria Bles appears in Project x Zone. Also, Selvaria Bles appears as a playable character in Degenki Bunk Fighting Climax while Alicia Melchiott appears as a assist. Even Skies of Arcadia characters have appeared in Valkyria Chronicles. I am just confused with the "mainstream" part, and the "nowhere near enough for a smash appearance" part. What constitutes a series being mainstream enough to be in a smash appearance?

With how long it took Octopath to get a spirit event and the fact that Luigi's Mansion 3 doesn't even have one yet, I wouldn't my breath for any spirit predictions in general now. Either they happen really soon, take forever to surface, or just never happen.

Hey, here's a little game we can do: Suggest a character archetype that is lacking/nonexistent in Smash, and see who could fill that archetype. For starters: An aerial heavyweight.

To be fair, XCDE is just normal Xenoblade with some QOL updates. I suppose you could make some Spirits out of the Future Connected party, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Nintendo doesn't think it's worth an Event.
The thing is all they need to do is put in new PNGs, and I think people would be happy.
They can probably copy the exact same fights, just put in something like Dunban (Definitive Edition). Or even extend it out to the side characters like Alvis. Though I can imagine it may be low on their priority list, aside from maybe the future connected versions.

Paper Mario you can make a case for.

But Xenoblade already has the entire main cast as spirits.
Not Torna though, and Octopath traveler already shows that they can spirit games that released slightly before Smash. So....

LORA CHADS WE'RE STILL ALIVE
jk, it's still probably Rex

I think being a heavyweight alone disqualifies your ability to fly.

Doesn't DDD already fills that niche?

Pretty sure Dedede and some other heavyweights on the lighter side like Wario already cover that, but might as well bring up Thanatos again.

A little late to the newcomer ranking but I'll give my opinion anyway.

I'm not sure Its fair to judge Ultimate's newcomers since we're not done with the updates yet. But introducing Joker puts it pretty high up for me.

64: This was the first game so they had to get their bases covered with the roster and they did it, covering all the mainstream series of its day, a couple niche but good ones with earthbound and Fzero. As well as the young upstarts with Pokemon.
Pretty good first game roster.

Melee: Smash got past the experimental phase and is now coming into it's own, the roster being more of the same as 64, but expanding it to include more Mario, Zelda and Pokemon characters to appeal to the mainstream. Pretty meh by today's standards but good for the second game.

It added some of my favorite Smash characters to play as like Pichu, Peach and Dr Mario, so Its neat to come back too.

Brawl: Kinda the same as Melee but now trimming down Melee's fat and adding in more variety as well as rounding out the mainstream series with characters like Diddy Kong, Wario and Red.

It introduced reps from 2 of my favorite games of all time Sonic adventure 2 and Zelda the wind waker, the two characters I played as the most back then. So looking back this ones the highest point when it comes to first party newcomers.
(This game was also Isaac's only chance at making the playable roster rip)

Sm4sh: welp, when it comes to first party additions this one was in my opinion the most boring one, the only ones of any real note were Shulk and Robin, I guess Little Mac was kinda cool? But the other additions just feel like they padding and adding eccentric characters for the sake of it.

The third parties however... BOY, adding Megaman was only a matter of time yet I was SO happy when he came in because I grew up with megaman games and seeing him show up in something after being dead for quiet a while put the biggest smile on 16 year old me.

The rest of the third parties were great additions too, invoking a similar vibe to that of the first parties from Smash 64, covering their bases with the best of the best, and Bayonetta was there too I guess.

They've done Spirit Events with very few new additions before.
-Super Smash Sisters only added Peachette who was featured alongside other female character spirits
-Link's Awakening remake event only added Link (LA) and The Owl
-Warframe only had Lotus and Natah to represent it
They could easily justify a Xenoblade Spirit Event with all the existing Spirits and throw in "Kino & Nene" as a new obtainable Spirit. They could also throw in some Torna spirits like Lora & Jin and a Malos spirit to round it out a bit.

I mean Christ, they did one for Link's Awakening remake and it didn't have a new campaign with new characters in it. It's not a lot of work and it helps cross-promote.

They could also use the FC version of Shulk among those two characters as well.

A high skill investment stance based iaijustsu user.
It's practically a staple in all anime fighting games now.

Now if only we had a long-requested popular katana user that did this very same unique mechanic that has desperately been missing for so long...

How about a non-humanoid character like Piranha Plant that represents a certain type of classic genre...

I think we have some of those in Smash in one way or another.

Bayo's certain abilities come from moon, Jigglypuff's Sing is sound-related, Rosalina's powers are almost entirely gravitational and Corrin can shapeshift/transform.

you didn't really have to add that spice in it man

yeah, we got three links, two zeldas, and one ganon with some people wanting another ganon so i guess impa can suffice

it ain't tingle though
If it were up to me, we'd have Impa, Tingle, Skull Kid, Midna & Wolf Link, and Revali at THE VERY LEAST.

I never really understood the Revali hype. I'm more of a Goron gang type of guy. Also, I hate Revali.

Honestly this just reminds me of any time people suggest we speculate on a BotW2 rep cause like, oh boy, will we get Link 4, Zelda 3 or Ganondorf 2 as that's all we are able to speculate on for the game so far
Link 4? What, is :4link: coming back? Maybe even the classic :linkmelee:?

As the previous games marketing said:

SETTLE IT IN SMASH!
Ngl, really wish this slogan stuck around for future Smash games.

What game do you guys think had the best newcomers and why?
I honestly can't decide. Each game had someone I felt was overdue/really wanted. I lost my mind at Dedede, Bowser Jr. and ESPECIALLY the Koopalings, Duck Hunt, Chrom, Isabelle, King K. Rool, B-K, and the returns of Mewtwo, Roy, Pichu, and Young Link.

I got to thinking of all the First Party franchises in Smash with either a stage or a character (or both).

The First Party franchises with characters are...

  • Super Mario
  • Donkey Kong
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Metroid
  • Yoshi
  • Kirby
  • Star Fox
  • Pokemon
  • Earthbound
  • F-Zero
  • Ice Climber
  • Fire Emblem
  • Game & Watch
  • Kid Icarus
  • Wario Ware / Wario Land
  • Pikmin
  • R.O.B.
  • Animal Crossing
  • Wii Fit
  • Punch Out!!
  • Mii (Also counts for Super Smash Bros.)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Duck Hunt
  • Splatoon
  • ARMS
That's 25 different franchises. 26 if you count the Miis are Super Smash Bros. characters

To add to that, here are the first party franchises with only stages...

  • Electroplankton
  • Pictochat
  • Balloon Fight
  • Nintendogs
  • Find Mii
  • Tomodachi Life
  • Wrecking Crew
  • Pilotwings
  • Wii Sports
That's 9 more franchises, making a total of 34 (or 35 if you count Smash).

Why list the franchises like this?Well I'm trying to think of the largest first party franchises not included in either category.

Now that ARMS has a character, I think the largest Nintendo franchises that could feasibly include a character that don't have on are currently...

  • Golden Sun
  • Advance Wars (Famicom Wars, Battalion Wars)
  • Rhythm Heaven
  • Astral Chain
  • Dragalia Lost
  • Ring Fit Adventure
The largest franchises that couldn't feasibly include a character are...
  • Brain Age
  • Excite (Excitebike, Excitetruck Excitebots)
  • Style Savvy
  • Wii Play
  • Tetris (Eh.... kinda of Nintendo owned)
I tried to limit these picks to franchises who either had constant smaller entries or at least one big more successful entry. Do you agree that these are the largest franchises without a character/stage? Do you see any of these IPs as possible additions?
Does Pilotwings count? I mean, I did make a Pilotwings for Smash thread....

Well, Pilotwings is already represented by a stage.

So I didn't include it as it focused on new franchises.

You lack imagination my friend.
What game do you guys think had the best newcomers and why?
For me, it's an easy win for Brawl. It feels like Brawl went for variety and quality, there's tons of characters from new franchises, but they also really knew which preexisting franchises were in need of newcomers and added the right one(s) for each. All of the characters feel special, like they should be there, there's no filler or easy cuts. And Snake and Sonic feel like really special additions, maybe I'm just traditional, but I like it when the third parties feel like they have weight - nowadays they're kind of expected, they lost that wow factor.

Smash 4 had great choices but it also had some baffling ones and it felt less like everyone could be added and more like you had to be relevant to get in (which is kinda diminished now, but still persists). To be fair, base game third party additions still felt special and had tons of fanfare, but with DLC they dropped so many that there was no room to breathe and Bayo really lowered the bar.

Ultimate is doing much better in the variety department, and tons of its additions feel less like marketing and more like actual choices based on history and merit. But it still has a long way to go, with the lack of new first party franchises pretty glaring. We'll see how the last of the DLC makes it turn out, but I doubt it'll reach Brawl. Plus I gotta dock some points because it's gonna have more DLC characters than base game and that's just not pro-consumer.
