The character base hypothesis is on pretty wonky grounds with supposedly using as a base. I mean, that could be the case, but why would they build off Mii Swordfighter when Link has a much more similar build, style of swordplay, and shield mechanic to Hero? Likewise, Robin also shares the build and crude swordplay of Hero, while also having a magic system (albeit one which is much different than Hero). Either of those two would be a better base to build Hero, and they have no glitches corresponding to them.

I wouldn't be surprised if this has something to do with ARMS being a Nintendo IP. Byleth was also quite secretive for some reason, perhaps Nintendo is keeping an iron lid on their properties.

I'm surprised Blazing Blade is on there, I thought Japan preferred Binding Blade more since it was a more straightforward entry and didn't have Lyn Mode. Other then that, the other four FE games on there make a lot of sense as they've always been popular in the franchise, and Genealogy in particular is a game that always does well with Famitsu's voting crowd.

Also more fuel for the truth that is Lyn should've been playable.

Blazing Blade has some of the most popular lords in the series with Lyn/Hector/Eliwood. They're all pretty popular in Japan too, due to obvious factors. Binding Blade gets most of its popularity from Roy being in Smash, but outside of that most people here and japan complain about the amount of babysitting you have to do to protect Roy in seize missions; it doesn't help that Roy is honestly running for the worst lord in the series in terms of gameplay/characterization.

The Tellius games and Thracia 776 both suffer from barely selling over in Japan. Tellius wasn't marketed well at all, and Thracia 776 happened to release on the SNES in 1999, so no wonder it flopped. It's a shame too, because those games probably deserve to be in the top 5 too. If it were purely my opinion; the top 5 FE games would be:

2. Path of Radiance
3. Genealogy of the Holy War
4. Three Houses
5. Awakening

It's been like a month since I've checked into any smash rumors stuff. Anything happen or are we just on the road to ARMS with nothing much else of note?

There doesn't seem to be any movement on the LoL leak either. Yes, I'm dredging up that one. I'll let my month-old opinion over at the LoL thread speak for itself (and bold emphasis mine):

It's a really curious leak due to timing. What with Riot really likely to have something for the Nintendo Switch and all.

It'd also - as I've stated in the main thread - make sense due to a couple reasons: A) Riot's owner Tencent is Nintendo's partner in China. and B) It would come at a major sweet spot: Riot's expansion beyond the computer sphere.

However, the leak is still too dependent on stuff going its way for me to leap onto it. Not just Hollow Knight (Mii Costume, possibly with Sealed Vessel Remix as CommanderZaktan pointed out), but Riot's / Tencent's Switch plans also being related to Smash. There's no conclusive proof on either factor at the moment, nor strong hints.

I wouldn't be surprised if it actually happened (Tencent's a really leaky company: their recent acquisition of System Shock 3 was leaked a couple days early), but if things don't go its way that's that really.

That's true, albeit it required A) Datamining for "Brave" (alongside "Jack" and "Pakku") to lead people towards Erdrick / Hero and B) a Copyright mistake on the Challenger Pack website to clue people in on a SNK character. B-K wasn't leaked IIRC until last minute and Joker was "You'll never see it comiiiiing!".

You know, with a video Maximilian Dood posted about this game being the Golden Age of Smash and hypothesizing if Smash Ultimate can make it to future consoles, I was thinking about what if this game can reach 100 characters? We so far have 83 (77 of which we know which is just insane...). If you could fill up the remaining spots with characters to make it to 100, who would they be? So what are you even arguing about?


Legal mumbo jumbo takes time. As someone who's worked in advertising, **** like something as small as a poster or billboard can take weeks if not months of prep work behind a scene, and that's most certainly even more in regards to video game characters.


Of course, I disagree with this as well, because the first major patch that Smash got, say it with me, placeholder DLC spots, that are currently being used by our first Fighter's Pass + the 2nd. The pass sold alongside the launch of the game, and Sakurai 100% had enough metric market data to consider a 2nd Pass by February, when he added an additional 10 DLC spots into the game, the same pass that Nintendo considers a "Huge financial success."


I don't at all believe that it took as long to spearhead a 2nd pass simply because, not only was the pass available to buy when the game came out, but it was also during Christmas, and New Years for Japan. With such a perfect time, the majority of its sales where 100% within the first 3 months of its life.

This has nothing to do about when the first pass was decided/revealed/worked on/whatever, like at all, wanna keep building this straw man and keep arguing with me about something I never even claimed? what’re we arguing about? The fighters pass characters not being affected by fighters pass 1 characters. You said they most definitely acquired the rights to the 2 characters by the time the 1 characters were decided. I proved that would be stupid because fighters pass 2 was never guaranteed to begin with. Now you’re trynna argue with me about some **** that I never even said. I should have clarified that my argument is specifically for Fighters Pass 1 and 2, not in general. Even then for Konami's case, Simon/Richter and Snake were all ballot picks and apparently decided in 2015 so there is a reason for Nintendo to have them all. Same thing for Megaman, Ryu and Ken or Sonic and Bayonetta. Joker being the exception.

This argument still doesn’t make any sense. You realize the characters rights still need to be bought again right? Just because Snake was in Brawl Sakurai can add him to Ultimate without getting the rights from Konami again. Whether you realize it or not the companies CAN get dealt with multiple times. Blazing Blade is surprising, but not unexpected.


Between Roy's game being utterly dull gameplay wise with every map being "ROUTE THE ENEMY", and 8 being....8, I suppose it makes sense that the only other GBA game makes it.


Granted, also won't lie in how much Lyn Lust probably played a part in it, rofl.

I have to disagree with Binding Blade being dull gameplay wise. While the objectives in Binding Blade lack in variety, it's not like Blazing Blade offers different objectives each chapter. I prefer Blazing Blade myself but in terms of map design and challenge Binding Blade seems clearly superior in comparison to FE7, at least for me.

FE7 being more popular is not surprising with the 3 lords of the game being really popular among fans. FE6 lacks in that regard, also, FE6 story is more focused in the world building and the lore while FE7 focuses more in the characters.

I always figured a Zeta Metroid would be a good mook pick. Metroids are their series' namesakes afterall, and I think Zeta forms have a cool design that would be really easy to incorporate in Smash.

naw naw, a Zeta is just a wingless Ridley playstyle, Omega Metroid or bust.

If you fought the Omega Metroids in Samus Returns and saw that one PSA/moveset showcase of Godzilla in a custom Project: M build, you'd understand why he'd be the pretty cool Metroid addition in Smash.
A very kaiju/giant monster-inspired playstyle that tells you to back off once he blast his beam breath on the ground, hahaha.

Still makes more sense than the Bayo glitch = Min Min theory. Bayo rarely uses her arms, which is what's most important for basically any ARMS character. Min Min's moveset would probably be mostly punches and attacks involving her arms (for obvious reasons).

Honestly, it would make more sense to use a larger Little Mac skeleton and tweak the punches and posture than Bayo.

Honestly I’d be down for a Sega fighter if they made it. They might have to lean on Sonic a bit, but I think they got enough Franchises to entice people, such as Puyo Puyo, Yakuza, Persona, SMT, Phantasy Star, Sakura Wars, Streets of Rage, Valkyria Chronicles, Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS, etc.

I think it could have a sizable player base as long as the core gamePlay isn’t broken, like another certain failed crossover Platform fighter

Not sure how this is going to handle the second Fighters Pass (I'd like to think that at least one or two of the characters in my signature would get in, and I'd find it hard to believe that the ARMS character won't be some kind of upgrade), but for simplicity's sake, I'm going to go with the ideal scenario (for me) that the second Fighters Pass is my signature (Geno, Doomguy, Elma, Dante, Rayman, Travis Touchdown), but with Min Min instead of Elma since we know that we're getting an ARMS character and she is, by my limited understanding, the most popular. (I know I probably could have picked Travis or Dante to move to the list so I'd get one more spirit promotion, but that felt like cheating since three of my most wanted characters are spirit upgrades, and I assume that the ARMS character will be one too)

I'm working under the assumption that Sony and Disney are off-limits, at the very least. For all I know, Sakurai could work his magic to make something happen, but I'm under the assumption that it's not going to.

I tried to get a mix of Nintendo characters and third parties. I thought about including Sam and Max, but since they're technically comic book characters, I didn't think they'd be eligible.

Looks like a good list (even if I'm not familiar with some, like Neku or Arle), though going by zeldasmash's post, only one spirit promotion is allowed in this list, and the 83 characters includes the second Fighters Pass, so you can fill those six unknown spots (well, five spots and an ARMS character) with whoever you want in theory. (so you can act like the second Fighters Pass consists of Min Min, Octoling, Elma, KOS-MOS, Dixie, and Rayman, and go from there)

I mean, it's 1 of 15 characters and ARMS in Smash hasn't been like the most tantalizing thing ever AND Nintendo holds all the cards in regards to information about the character. I can see how it's both just not that readily available and how even people who may even have knowledge wouldn't care too much. The vast majority of people who leak information want some degree of glory out of it, saying which one of fifteen is coming next doesn't really net you much clout to be honest. The fact that maybe even as low as a 1/3rd of those 15 are really reasonable barring a conglomerate situation means you could guess any of those five and be equally right means it's even worse off as information to leak. Are you potentially going to blow a source if you care about that sort of thing or attempt to earn a reputation because you got a 1 in 5 chance that most people expected anyway? I feel like the answer is decidedly no.

Edit: Alternatively, I'll augment the rules to where you can include any fighter you want, but you have to pick at least 5 third party characters in addition to your choices.

Part of that is because Nintendo stuff rarely leaks. Sabi (back when he was doing this stuff) noted it's a big reason no one knew about Byleth as it's usually third party stuff that leaks. It could indicate more of Vol 2 is Nintendo stuff, though we'll have to wait and see

You know, with a video Maximilian Dood posted about this game being the Golden Age of Smash and hypothesizing if Smash Ultimate can make it to future consoles, I was thinking about what if this game can reach 100 characters? We so far have 83 (77 of which we know which is just insane...). If you could fill up the remaining spots with characters to make it to 100, who would they be? They cannot be Assist Trophies and you are limited to just one Spirit to be a character. Mine would be something like this (besides the ARMS character):

I'm kind of confused as to why you say we have 77 known, don't we know 83 at this point counting the new ARMS character as characters with individual player slots? Anyways, here's my 17 to get to 100:

1. Master Chief (Halo)
2. Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes)
3. Crash Bandicoot (Crash)
4. Dante (Devil May Cry)
5. Heihachi (Tekken)
6. Geno (Super Mario RPG, my one Spirit Upgrade)
7. Marshal (Rhythm Heaven, who is surprisingly not a Spirit, so I'm taking advantage of the situation)
8. Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
9. 2B (Nier Automata)
10. Vivi/Black Mage (Final Fantasy, with LOTS of music from other games specifically)
11. Arle Nadja (Puyo Puyo)
12. Reimu (Touhou)
13. Sol Badguy (Guilty Gear)
14. Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden)
15. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
16. Amaterasu (Okami)

I kind of just threw together a list I could have some fun with, included some big names that felt right, and also just a couple characters I want haha.

Gonna be honest, I'm not sure I could manage this without spirits. Nor do I honestly believe that spirits (or potentially even ATs) will be a problem moving forward, particularly if we were to get that many more characters. At some point they are going to move on past their initial plans for the game, if they haven't already and I doubt that they would let a spirit or assist trophy get in the way of their vision if their vision changed due to circumstance.

So if I ignore that rule my list would be:

-Box Theory. Everyone dismissed it. Look what happened.

-Assumption that Ridley would be playable in Sm4sh based on some shadow. Look what happened.

-Sm4sh when people were so certain on Ridley based on that shadow or as someone shared in the Geno thread.

-4 months later-

'Surprise! It was a car the whole time. Weren't you shocked?'

-COVID-19 likely interfered with development so they couldn't reveal who it was at that time.

-Also could be an exceptional case of being promoted from assist as he was considered for Base roster and an Season Pass 2 wasn't planned at that time.

-Featured in most promotional art and game cover.

these are some really bad arguments
all the doubts for Box Theory and Ridley's possible inclusion doesn't correlate to why people think they're not going with Springman.
especially the fact both of them had to rely on RUMORS to even gain a traction of belief it was really happening. The general belief was assuming they're adding Decidueye or any other popoular Gen8 pokemon that screams "promotion" and slack off Metroid again.

and using a pandemic as a excuse for hiding the "obvious" addition would be poor. Meanwhile they had to assure any company representitive interviewed to not even to agree they're getting something for Ultimate and hide off Byleth to even surprise Nintendo employees again, since the freaking public didn't believe another avatar protagonist from Fire Emblem would be getting in as the final FP1 character, that includes the same people that thought Edelgard were gonna be added due to the heavy market focus for 3H.
