So what if FP5 is from HAL Laboratory and SMASH theory was right all along?
Joker was from Sakurai's recent favorite game. Hero was from Sakurai's ever beloved series. Banjo was a big thank you to the fans of Smash. And Terry was from the games gave Sakurai the idea of Smash in the first place.
So who's Fighter 5? It's a character from the game that affected Sakurai's entire career path. If this game wasn't born, the first Kirby game might have been totally different or even not existed.
V-MH GLORY from Metal Slader Glory joins the battle!

A very interesting theory that might also explain the gun reference pic that Sakurai posted from a few years ago.

However, I still personally think Sora is still in the running. Sora is Disney, not Square-Enix.

However, I would say you have the most interesting take on what it could possibly be if it is not Sora.

Also, here is an interesting fact, Metal Slader Glory: Director's Cut was the final release for the Super Famicom, releasing in 2000.

There's Katalina of Granblue Fantasy from Cygames, who Nintendo have a working relationship with.
There's Saber from Stay/Fate Night which was origianlly a Visual Novel with some naughty bits but has now become one of the biggest mobile franshises.
There are indie characters though the most prominent ones left are Commander Video from Bit.Trip (who have worked with Charles Martinet) and The Knight or Hornet from Hollow Knight (surprising hit in Japan)
There's Chell from Portal as that series has appeared on Nintendo consoles though Lego Dimensions and Portal Bridge Constructor. There's also DOTA 2 and TF2 but they haven't appeared outside of PC games and Telltale's Poker Night
There's Cooking Mama who was a big part of the Touch Generations era
There's Maxwell from Warner Brother's Scribblenauts who has insane moveset potential
If we get into legal technicalities, Steve may or may not be outright owned by Microsoft, same way Kirby's a Nitnendo character but is owned by HAL
And just because no-one has said no explicitly, there are Sony characters.

Frankly I'm kinda happy a lot of my "please no" choices are debunked and there's stills some good picks.

Well expand that to a Granblue character but the point still stands.

And pardon me for being dense but "one of the first two characters revealed in fighting game" doesn't scream "side character" to me.

Nintendo has a game between them and Cygames, you'd think they'd pull from that first. The ONLY reason Granblue is brought up is because of Hitagi, who was completely false.

That list definitely narrowed down who it could be, but when you think about it, there's still quite a lot of awesome characters left on the table.
