While I wouldn't say Layton is particularly improbable, I also have a hard time seeing Level-5 get in and the team going for someone that isn't either Jibanyan or an Inazuma Eleven rep.

Go back to basics with Dark Cloud.
Yokai Watch is a possibility yes. I'm not quite as sure on Inazuma Eleven though, Its kind of third rank behind Layton and Yokai Watch in terms of popularity, I don't really know how many entries made it over to the US either, I know they where released in Europe though. Mark Evans could be an interesting fighter though.

Dark Cloud would be interesting, although apparently that series is co owned by Sony so that one might be a tad harder to acquire I'd imagine...

One thing I said on Twitter and I’ll say here is that if Sora happens then I’d love to see Mii costumes of Rallen and Jeena from Spectrobes come with him, I actually feel kinda like that seems something Sakurai would do if he were to use Disney-licensed characters considering Sakurai usually loves going all out with different parts of the company’s history being represented in non-playable roles (Unless your ATLUS heh heh heh)

Dark Souls would be awesome and is a good shout, but I do still hestitate to go all-in on it due to its lack of an immediately obvious candidate. Chosen Undead would probably be the go-to pick since he's the main character, but the lack of a real identity or personality makes me a bit skeptical, the latter is usually a big priority in Smash. Solaire has been brought up a few times, but despite being quite iconic, his overall influence in the game itself is limited, I'd be surprised if a side character is chosen as the sole representative of a franchise. Maybe a boss could do since they're what Dark Souls is really known for, of course the Google Theory turned out to be bunk, but Artorias wasn't a bad idea.

I would still expect it to be Chosen Undead in the end since the playable character always seems to be the priority, but at that point I have to compare him to other Namco reps (as I'm only even more certain on #5 being a Namco rep now that Dante's out), at which point I still feel like Lloyd is easily the safest bet.
I would give DS the edge given it's never had any involvement in Smash before like Tales/Tekken did. The Pass seems to be going for franchises with 0 involvement in Smash before.

I don't give a **** about naked women either and I love MK, but Senran Kagura just makes me feel uncomfortable. It's like an ecchi anime that borders as close as possible on being a hentai without actually being able to be classified as one.
Also I'd hardly call the fanservice the "least important aspect" when it is the very reason most people know about the series at all. It is sold on sex appeal and I don't know how anyone could claim otherwise
I'm not uncomfortable with gruesome murders, but Senran Kagura bad. Huh.

It's damn near satirical tbqh and it takes a back seat to everything else it has to offer. If someone buys it for that, I'm not going to judge, but there's a ****load more to the games than fan service. The same could be said for Dead or Alive, but it'll always be known for sex appeal.

Yeah it's kinda odd. I'm surprised we haven't heard any deconfirmations on a Namco character yet, considering that there's a lot of discussion of Lloyd, Heihachi, KOS-MOS, and Chosen Undead here in this thread even before the Freeman/Dante rumors.
You can thank Bamco’s anti leak ninjas for that, they’re even MORE ruthless than Nintendo’s

You know this isn't comparable.
The only 3rd-party character that sits in an even remotely-comparable position to Banjo in terms of 'special circumstances' is probably Geno.
I'd say they're still comparable on a slightly smaller scale

Layton is still a pretty requested character

Smash doesn't automatically go for the most lucrative franchises first and foremost.

if that were the case, we'd have the likes of Monster Hunter and a Resident Evil rep before Mega Man and Ryu

Friends of mine have discussed it with me, and the idea has always been that TGA makes sense to reveal a Smash character who is either:

A) A longtime icon that everybody knows

or

B) Is somebody new that stands out

Joker fit B, but somebody like Dante would fit A. Likewise, Resident Evil fits A and is relevant, but something like Dark Souls would fit B.

There’s also the fact that both Resident Evil and Dark Souls fit a certain criteria to “feel” like western-made games, despite the fact that they’re not.

Honestly...kinda thinking that with Dante out, it’s Resident Evil or Dark Souls. Not that it can only be them, but bruh. Both would be pretty cool.

Although...my challenge has always been to playa a game in each series that has a playable pick in Smash. So that would mean...

Oh god.

MK in recent years has gone out of it's way to make it's violence into something of a spectacle, some fatalities are so far out of the realm of reality that you stop taking them seriously. And even then I'm not okay with all of it, there's more than a few fatalities in 11 that I hate looking at because of how awful they are.
I just don't like the way Senran goes about it's fanservice, satirical or not. I know it's subjective and YMMV, but it's just not for me.

Well, Peach Ball and Shinobi Refle are things that did happen, so in some instances there really isn't that much more to it. >_>

i wouldn't call dark souls something new when it's been around for 9 years by 2020 (11 years by 2020 if you count DeS)

The big names still left:
  • Sora
  • Leon/Jill/Resident Evil rep
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Chosen Undead (Dark Souls)
  • Lloyd Irving
  • Heihachi
  • KOS-MOS (not as much as the others I mentioned but she's talked about quite a bit here)
Any other big names I missed?
  • Lara Croft
  • Tracer (hasn't been personally deconfirmed by Sabi yet)
  • Travis Touchdown
  • Master Chief (not entirely impossible)
  • Kratos (same)
  • Steve
  • Ezio Auditore
  • Rayman
That's all i can think of right now. Although we're talking about big names, Terry isn't exactly a well-known iconic character.

And Leon isn't deconfirmed yet, so there's still hope

Sabi's source apparently deconfirmed Dante. Can't find and haven't seen any evidence of it yet but came across someone discussing that. If I find proof I'll pop back up with it

You'll face death. Enough death to leave you broken.

Do it. Play Dark Souls.

Smash reveals have never ended in a Bang. :ness64::jigglypuff64::gawmelee::olimar::wolf::4shulk::4bayonetta::ultincineroar:
EVERYONE always says this but the ONLY, SINGLE EXAMPLE we have of Nintendo ending Smash DLC is BAYO-MOTHERF****N-NETTA. I dont care about base roster reveals.

I DARE anyone to try and tell me that Bayonetta wasn't a giant tactical nuke of a reveal to end Sm4sh DLC.

I don’t necessarily mean “new new”, but like, not the same thing as some legacy series that could be added.

Compared to Street Fighter, Metal Gear, or Final Fantasy, Dark Souls is quite new, for example.

I find it very hard to believe people play a game that sells itself entirely on anime tiddies for anything but the anime tiddies. That's like playing Mario for the story.

They make several Strategy RPG games. Their main one is Disgaea, they also made La Pucelle which came out BEFORE Disgaea and there's also Phantom Brave. They collaborated with other small Game companies as well like Compile Heart, Gust(Atelier), etc.

OK. Bayonetta wasn't a giant tactical nuke of a reveal to end Sm4sh DLC. Especially when we were told she "won the ballot" but had nowhere near the presence of Ultimate's newcomers. She was definitely out of left-field but not a hype bomb by any means.

Chosen Undead would probably be the go-to pick since he's the main character, but the lack of a real identity or personality makes me a bit skeptical, the latter is usually a big priority in Smash.
I think he has enough personality - or rather, coming from the world of Dark Souls tells us enough about what his personality in Smash WOULD be. Dark Souls is a world on the edge of despair, where everyone in it is either falling into despair or trying to keep their faith or conviction or reason to go on, alive. Stoic, melancholy but enduring is probably the closest to a canon personality.

Oh well, Disgaea's outta the picture.

On the topic of niche, I can tell you another character that the next Smash DLC fighter isn't.
Seems like FP #5 will be from a series that is well-known. So a good chance we could be getting Dark Souls next.
Anything I missed?
Dante won't be the next character and neither will be a Nippon Ichi Software character.
Hmm...what did they make?
Nippon Ichi Software is known for making the Disgaea and Atelier series.
