On the subject of SquareEnix, can we talk about how Vagrant Story is one of the best most forgotten gems?
Kinda agree, but at the same time, its setting was still present on the Ivalice FF games. And on the topic of Ivalice you have Matsuno and arguably another forgotten series from SE which is Ogre Battle.

It's been a few years now, but Ogre Battle made it into XIV, so Square is still doing... things with it. Kind of.
Ivalice did too, actually, so XIV is going to wind up being SE's time capsule at this rate.

Sakurai simply chooses what characters he thinks would be enjoyable to play and usually 3rd party companies don't put strict standards on him and the Smash development team.
Yeah, right. But at the same time if you really think he would go for, I don't know, Parappa the Rapper instead of Kratos or Nathan Drake because he thinks Parappa would be more fun, well, I honestly think you're wrong about that.

At this point every third party character we have in Smash is the top character of their company or at least one of their iconic franchises. The exception is of course Banjo and we know why, the only character I can see repeating the Banjo situation is Geno.

Returning to the Sony rep talk, I'm saying that because I don't think anyone would expect other Street Fighter or Sonic character getting in before Ryu and Sonic, for example. Sakurai thinks that a character being fun is important? Of course. That doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate the legacy of a franchise and if we're talking about that, I think it's really obvious which characters would be the frontrunners if we're talking about a Sony rep.

I mean, if this was a Phoenix Wright situation, who isn't among the main characters of his company but has a lot of support from Smash and a lot of connection with Nintendo, then maybe we could see an underdog from Sony getting in before Drake, Kratos or Ratchet & Clank. But maybe it's me, if I was Sakurai and I could have a Sony character, which already is a super big deal, I wouldn't doubt and I would choose their top dog. Maybe it's a hot take but if you're making the greatest crossover in gaming and as we already know, Sakurai wants to expand that and still adding new franchises, picking "little" franchises like Sly Cooper or Gravity Rush instead of the main ones from Sony would be a missed opportunity. Adding Parappa, Kat or Sly Cooper would be cool, but it wouldn't expand Ultimate as a crossover and taking it one step further. If you want to do that, you would pick Drake, Kratos or maybe Ratchet and Clank, being generous.

For the record I love Gravity Rush and I really like Kat as a character, I'm not despising her or other underdogs.

Yeah those characters are still around. But let's be honest, I don't picture Nintendo ever approaching Sony for anyone that isn't their top dog. All the characters you mentioned are in hiatus and their future is unclear. We know GoW 5 is getting made (Cory even hinted at such even when it's obvious). It'll be kinda like Cloud, Sakurai and Nintendo asked for the top soldier of Square Enix before any other SE character. I can very well see the same happen in regards to Sony.
Maybe this posts summarized better what I was trying to explain, hahaha. But yeah, I completely agree with you.

I'll echo the sentiment that Sakurai's statement doesn't mean a whole lot. Not every popular or fun character is going to make it in.

I would be fine with Final Fantasy music that wasn't from VII being added if they also added a stage that referenced multiple Final Fantasy games at once. Maybe I'm being nitpicky but hearing music that isn't from VII on Midgar would feel a bit off, as FF7 is its own world separate from the rest of the series.

I guess Terry came with non Fatal Fury and KoF music, but since KoF is SNK's crossover fighter, it still feels appropriate to me to have music from other SNK games play on King of Fighters Stadium, even Metal Slug music.

Though I doubt it would ever happen, especially since the workload would still approximate actual new stages, I would also be okay with Midgar's background changing to that of a different Final Fantasy game like how Mementos' background does when the associated music plays. The shape of Midgar is basically just Battlefield, and the stage gimmick is the Summons, which aren't really specific to Midgar or FF7 unless I'm mistaken (I think only Bahamut ZERO is exclusive to FF7). Keeping the stage gimmick but changing the background to show a locale from other Final Fantasy entries would still feel true to each entry in the series as each game tends to use Summons.

I really can't see any other Sony rep getting in before Kratos. The dude is the closest thing that Sony has to a mascot, every other character gets like 3-4 games and then disappears to never be seen again. Kratos has been around since the PS2 era and will stick around for the PS5 era. It also helps that a moveset for Kratos can be easily envisioned since he is a fighter at heart.

Speaking of God of War, the art director of GoW made fan art of Smash Bros characters:
Fox be lookin' kinda chonky there.
Link looks like that one emo kid in high school.
Peach looks like a different character. Can't put my finger on who though.
Donkey Kong gives me Planet of the Apes vibes.
Interestingly, Ganondorf uses his design from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Kirby is adorable as always.
Pikachu looks like an alien baby thing a sci-fi movie would use as a mascot.
Ridley's legs freak me out.
Scratch that. Diddy Kong's expression freaks me out.

EDIT: Perhaps they could throw a bunch of Bravely series music at the Midgar stage in the next game...Not sure if all the violins and stuff would work in that industrial setting though.

Eh, I'm more on betting for a normal reveal at a Direct. Keep the Game Awards for the start of Season 2 to set the stage. It worked with Joker, and it'll surely work here. Trust me on this,

You could treat it as Dissidia Midgar since it's regenerated from Cloud's memories there. >_>

If Smash somehow does end up with a Sony character, it's almost certainly gonna be Kratos. The most recognizable face of the company is almost always the one to get into Smash first, which is why we got Terry over someone like Nakoruru or Pac-Man over anyone else from Namco. The only exception is Banjo getting in before Steve or Master Chief, but that was a very special case of the character being heavily requested and having a unique history with Nintendo. Unless there's a huge push for some other Sony character I'm not aware of, Kratos makes the most sense, violence be damned (not that it was even an issue to begin with, cuz you know, :ultsnake::ultbayonetta::ultjoker:)

I mean, yeah, there is a way to not make him uber-violent in a way, so...it's really up to the devs on how to stay true to the character, make him loyal to his home games, and work from there. His presence...eh, violence is a double standard for such reps anyway.

I could see a reveal at the Game Awards, but I'm not sure about it being absolutely guaranteed like most people here seem to imply. Joker's reveal at the Game Awards last year, at least I've read, was a last minute thing and not planned at all.

It could be at the Game Awards... but I could also see any and all major Smash reveals coming soon (Fighter 5, details on post-Pass DLC, Fighter 6, other additional changes to the game, etc.) being saved for a Direct sometime around Ultimate's anniversary, while Nintendo instead dedicates their time at the Game Awards to other stuff like Breath of the Wild 2 or Bayonetta 3.

Heheheh. Probably a "take that" to everyone who just clamors around for a Smash announcement ever since last year. BoTW2 and Bayo3 are just as hype for me, and that is something I'd definitely see happen anytime soon.

Chill...don't count your chickens before they hatch.
I'm 100% Confident it's not him. He is not Fighter Number 5. It's just not the right time for Lloyd to be playable, if he is to be playable. it's the same thing with a character like Geno

like it's not happening. Post Pass is Definitely a possibility, but for FP#5 i can assure you, with my life he is not in. and look, my predictions haven't been correct most of the time. the only 100% i got right was that Ken would be the most Unique Echo in Smash. However using Facts and logic, i can tell you it's not Lloyd

Okay...good thing. Anyway, I'm just chilling here trying to know more Touhou stuff. Because I don't jump to conclusions, yet think in advance.

You coulda just stopped at "he won't be in".
Honestly, i could. i do got reasons to believe he is not fighter Number 5 though

-the VA thing from his Voice actor and the trademark i think came way too late for it to be Lloyd, at least in fighter pass. That's even if all of that is for Smash.

-Lloyd essence i can sense doesn't gel well with being the Final Character of the Final Pass. He's much better placed post pass.

I think there's more reasons i have, but I don't know how to word it

Ah yes, hard, solid, ironclad evidence. Exhibit A: some evidence that could have been in his favor turns out not to be, therefore it's against him! Exhibit B: he doesn't feel like a final character for... Reasons!

Your honor, I rest my case.

Or you watch so much news that he thinks in advance too much.

If Lloyd is Fighter #5, I'm eating my Switch!
Dude. I hate to tell you, but if you go solely on available evidence, Lloyd is the most likely candidate for Fighter 5.

Actually I have a theory about Lloyd. Lloyd is being used as Leakbait to hide who the True 5th character is, and if there hadn't been any extra DLC he would be Mii Costume

However because there is Extra DLC, they are using him as leakbait but they are gonna put him in anyway as Extra DLC.

Most of the time Smash ends things on a low note compared to the beginning.

"Olimar isn't hype enough to be the final newcomer" - Smash Brawl
"Shulk isn't popular enough to be the final newcomer" - Smash 4
"Bayonetta and Corrin are nowhere near as noteworthy as Ryu and Cloud" - Smash 4 DLC
"Ken/Incineroar aren't hype enough to be the final new characters revealed" - Smash Ultimate

I think pattern suggests that Smash cycles end on a lower note compared to their start, I think it is safe to assume that here too.

Lloyd/Yuri/Tales of rep are looking extremely likely right now, although there is a small chance we may end up getting other "lesser known" characters like KOS-MOS, Nightmare, Adol, Sol, Ragna etc. I wouldn't expect a mindblowing reveal if the cycle repeats itself. Tales of definitely looks like the series that has the best shot of getting in though.

If we could edit each stage's playlist in this game what songs (that are already in Ultimate) would you add to the Midgar stage? Personally, I think Boss Fight 1 (Kid Icarus Uprising) and Metal Man Stage would work well there.
Last surprise.

Because I can imagine Joker looking at Cloud and going all "The future is now old man"

So I sent out all the icons that people requested (for the existing ones, I didn't make any new ones). If you didn't get yours, my bad! Shoot me a message, I must've missed you.

But for people who requested Nintendo characters, I did make those already, they were part of the original batch (with a few third-parties).

There are a few omissions, but I'm not satisfied with how they look anymore. I might make new versions.

can you please make one for Gordon Ramsey? Hes my most wanted

It’s another lesser known character. Lloyd is material for hyping a new pass.

Oh dear Lord, you know there's a feminist here who will go for another bout of depression because the new fighter ain't female.
