A pregnant mother has spoken of the heartbreaking moment she was forced to choose between saving her teenage son or young daughter from drowning.

Rachel Edwards had seconds to decide after the car, in which she was driving two-year-old Isabella and Jack Brennan, 16, plunged into a **** and began sinking.

The mum got out of the vehicle through an open window and returned to try to free her children - whose passage out of the car was blocked

Mrs Edwards was able to pull Isabella out but could not rescue Jack without letting go of her daughter.

The 39-year-old - who was six months pregnant at the time of the accident - told the Derby Telegraph: "I saw the bottom of the car so I shoved my hands under and I felt her car seat.

"I pulled her out and I knew she was still alive. I tried to go back for Jack but I knew, if I let go of Isabella, then I wouldn't be able to get her back."

Two of Jack's friends, who were also in the car, managed to escape and run for help.

After taking her daughter to safety, Mrs Edwards said she tried to go back to save Jack but was held back by paramedics who arrived at the scene.

A police officer pulled the teenager from the Citroen Xsara estate but he was confirmed dead in hospital.

Mrs Edwards said she had told Jack to shut his window shortly before the car hit a pothole and veered off the road in Midville, near Boston, Lincolnshire, in August.

"I told him to close it before we went into the **** because Isabella was sitting behind him in her car seat and she was asleep," she said.

On August 24, only five days after his death, Mrs Edwards collected Jack's GCSE results.

She said: "He got Cs and Ds. That was what he needed to get into college. He might have not got As or anything, but he made a lot of people happy and that to me is more important than exams."

More than 300 people attended his funeral on Friday in Dunmow, Essex.

Jack's father Carl Brennan, who lives in Alvaston, Derbyshire, and is separated from Mrs Edwards, said: "It is a hard thing to put into words how I feel. You don't think you would ever have to bury your child."

Mrs Edwards' third child, a baby boy, is due on November 21 - just three days after Jack's birthday.

Lincolnshire Police said the accident was being investigated by a collision team and a report will be sent to the coroner.
That must have been heart breaking...

Y'mean one couldn't stay behind and help the situation?

God Bless the mother, really. No one person can imagine being in that situation.

wtf lol

"ZOMG! The car crashed! We're both 16, but unfortunately we're incapable of pulling people out of cars, even if we worked together!! Let's go look for help even though it'll probably be too late by the time we get back" :D

Maybe I missed something, but why exactly couldn't Jack get out himself?

and what the hell is a ****? I keep picturing a car plowing into a behemoth butch lesbian and sinking into her fat rolls.

I ask this.

As well as this.

Either way, this is a horrible tragedy, nobody should have to go through such a peril. Blessings to the mother of this.

This is really saddening. :(

It seems like he was capable of swimming considering the pool picture, but I have to wonder, how can not one, but two of his friends leave for help when there's a toddler, pregnant woman, and a friend all in the car? Maybe I'm not picturing this correctly, but shouldn't at least one of them have stayed behind to help if they were the first to escape the vehicle? Either way this is extremely heart-breaking.

Good question. Probably revolves around him being pinned underneath water.

A **** is practically a ditch, think of it that way.

I can't imagine how difficult this must've been for the mother emotionally and psychologically.

Something interesting I noticed was that every parent I've talked to about this has said that they would not give up until they got all of their children even if it meant dying themselves. That's an easy thing to say when you're not truly faced with that choice.

I suspect in a situation like this they, and almost no one else, would be thinking through logically, or thinking at all.

Adrenaline is pumping, panic flooding your head. People just act. They wouldn't be thinking,

"Right, I'm out. There's 3 others in the car, they'll need my help. So I'll ask billy to stay here while I go back and try and do something"

But more along the lines of

"FUUUUUUUUUUUU"

WOW.

That's really rough.

That poor woman, fair play to her for rescuing her daughter while 6 months pregnant.
