They "say" they're trying to close the gap, but they're really not. I still think the more skilled players will win at Mario Kart Wii, despite Reggie's speech on how this will be the first Mario Kart game that new players and veterans alike can stay toe to toe at.

This Smash Ball is simply your extra pinball for losing your first three balls so quickly. Still gon' lose!

Cept for if you kill the other guy 3 times, they come back and final smash you, and they kill you 3 times, and they come back with Link and final smash one-shot you, oh there's the issue. lol

That sucks.... a lot. Brawl seems to become more noob friendly than ever...
i love all the hate you guys seem to pile on brawl. So he wants families and new players to join, so what? If you guys get so mad, just go play a game of melee, then when you're calm again go back to brawl, have the best of both worlds. Sakurai makes this game with the japanese in mind too, and they did studies before making the wii on the japanese people. Japan is moving away from hardcore games, going back to casual minigames and the like. You notice all this brain age, mii, big brain explosion? japan! twilight princess didnt sell over there nearly as well as it did here. So the Big N is moving toward casual, it's a natural cycle!

I hate that mindset. advanced players get to where they are by hard work and time. why should that advantage be given away just so some, excuse expression, whiny noobs don't quit because there getting beat.

If someone is losing so bad that they get a free Final Smash, I don't think you'll have that much to worry about. I put handicaps on when my friends are over anyway, it makes things more equal.

I hope your friends are casual players, and you don't actually do that in serious matches.

Thank God you can turn this thing off.

It wouldn't really matter even if you couldn't turn it off. If they're losing that badly I don't see what you have to worry about.

Hah, you guys are getting so uppity about the game being "dumbed" down...this is NINTENDO! JESUS! They make KID games. If you want "hardcore", go play a 360! WoW has better online than Brawl will ever have! At least in WoW you can CHAT online!

You guys are babies. It's probably going to be able to be turned off, and if they suck that bad, who cares?

It's pretty ****n hard to just dodge Giga Bowser. And still, Nintendo is trying to close the gap which is just disrespectful to advanced players.
I agree with you in that dodging a rampaging n00b Giga bowser will be a nightmare, however to call aiding the not-so-skilled as disrespectful to advanced players is a bit much.

We should, as advanced players embrace the challenge, especially if it allows some n00bish people to have fun. I can vividly remember what it was like to be a n00b, and it wasn't very fun to get beat down consecutively. At least this way, even if you've been 4-stocked, you can laugh when it's over and say "Hey, how cool was it when I Giga Bowser Fsmashed you!!"

As for the competitive scene, if a pro has a score of -3, I think it should be perfectly acceptable for them to (if they're lucky) grab at least one stock... considering both players have this handicap, I fail to see how it is unfair at all. If anything, the ability to turn it off would only sweeten the deal, rather than be paramount to the game's competitive success...

I agree. Nintendo isn't trying to make Brawl lean towards more competitive or casual play. They just want to make the game as accessible to as many people as possible. They want to make sure that everyone can have a good time one way or another. If you want to play a competitive match or a casual match, you can simply...CHANGE THE SETTINGS!!! OMG IT IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!!!!

*Ahem*

Anyway, I'm not bashing anyone, I just hope that people can see this, and set the differences aside between tourneys and homies.

Woop-de-doo, more competition. Less emberassing for the n00b. That pretty much sums up what I think of this.

Eh, in the spirit of competition, nothing should be given.

I would have to assume that the developers are aware of the competitive mentality, but want to cater to the casual gamer as well.

I'm sure it will be a variable, and not a big deal.

You guys do realize that that Samus' score was at negative 5 right. The player did not get a Final Smash for dying three times he/she/it/potato got it for getting negative 5 points. Remember that that was timed mode not stock.
Well the free FS thing is not a good idea in my opinion...

There's already a Handicap function in Melee... that should do the job.

Even if you were playing a stock match (let's say with 4) then someone get's minues 3 or 5, it's not as if that's going to bring you down 3 or 4 lives. Sure, you might lose one, but it won't suddenly make you lose.

Anyway, it's a good idea, I'd like it if I was playing my sister or something. Other than that, I don't really like it and hope it can be turned on/off.

Again, we already have handicap already for that purpose.

But yeah, the most important thing is the switch... but it is sad to think that Sakurai put this feature on the default settings

I think this feature will be cool when first playing the game to get oreinted with the characters FS, but when you become more experienced the option to turn it off will be available, much like items.

I think it is real unfair to start the loser of the match with a FS, its essentially like giving a losing player a hammer at the beggining of the match.

Even Mario Kart lets you tone down the stupid items if you want to. I don't think this will be forced.

I will play with it on though, in all my casual games anyway. I doubt it will even come up very often, and it will just be a funny thing that happens near the end of a round that won't affect the outcome of the game anyway. I would even consider leaving it on for competitive matches, just because it wouldn't matter. One final smash in a 1v1 is not going to catch you up the 3/5 point deficit you've earned to get it, even if you can keep it, use it, and hit with it.

Plus this lets you do things like Final Smash-offs, because there is a way to guarentee that both of you get a final at the same time. Or even lets you "start" a match as Zamus.

Okay, so how about we summarize the entire topic in one post?

SIDE 1: The "Stop Whining" side
-=-=-
1) You will probably be able to turn it off, just like pretty much everything else.
2) This way, you can "start" a Match as Zamus.
3) One free Final Smash isn't going to make a difference 99% of the time.
4) It might even be only in the demo.
5) Stop whining.

Well, I agree with everything except for point 5. They're not necessarily whining, some of them are, the majority are NOT. They're simply expressing dislike, stating an opinion. We live in a free world don't we? Everyone likes certain things and doesn't like certain other things, if they don't like it and simply want to express their dislike I see nothing wrong with it. One member even gave an actual thought-out argument as to why he thinks it wouldn't be a good idea. I don't know about you guys, but I like people who can back up their opinions, even if I disagree with them. Besides, some (again, not all) are even whining about whiners... How ironic...

SIDE 2: The "This is for t3h n00bs" side
-=-=-
1) This is basically rewarding someone for playing bad.
2) This is to appeal to casual gamers.
3) Sakurai doesn't care about the competetive scene.

Point 1 in my opinion simply depends on how you look at it... You can simply look at it as the game having mercy. Besides, it will only make a 4 stock that more epic if you manage to 3-stock somebody, then beat the final smash out of them and finish them off and say "haha! owned, noob!"
Point 2 I agree with, this game is indeed made to appeal "more" to casual gamers, but the customization is there so hardcore gamers can still be attracted and create their own more skill-based less randomness-based rulesets.
And you can guess my opinion on point 3 if you read mine on point 2 and have some common sense and the ability to draw logical conclusions.

Well. it's official...again.

Sakurai said:
And then there’s an element known as the Pity Final Smash. Once a significant point advantage is reached, the losing player is given a bonus chance. When you get this, you will reappear after a KO in Final Smash standby mode.
There ya go.

Also, it's been confirmed that you can turn off Smash Balls, so I think that they're pretty much out of tourneys.

The scared tourny types piss me off.

"Final Destination. Fox ONLY."

Take a chance, people. I wonder if the debate will get so big that there are tournaments with and without FS? (doubt it) My God, it could be Smash civil war.

Let's wait until the game's out before we decry Final Smashes, okay? Granted, some are cheap and they probably will be turned off, I agree... but is there a point to saying that when we haven't seen even half of them yet?
