How much longer do you see yourself playing videogames?

I was thinking about this the other day. I'm a senior in college this year, I will be graduating in the spring. I'm 21 already. I was just thinking "when will videogames come to an end for me?" Not when will the game end, but how long will I stay involved?

I've been playing now for 7 years (since the game came out). I've played with Advanced Techniques for 3 and a half years. Its amazing that this game still keeps my interest so strongly. But eventually this will all have to end. I plan to get married within the next 2-3 years. I hope to get a full-time job in a year or so. So although I'd like to say I'll keep playing, realistically this will all need to end for me one day.

I guess I plan to stop by the end of next summer. This is when I see myself getting serious about life. There won't be time for tournaments once that comes. So I guess 1 year from now, I'll be done playin videogames. :ohwell:

Just wondering if anyone else thinks about this stuff. How long do you think you have left playing videogames before its time to move on?

I've still got a while to go - I'm not out of high school yet (I'm a junior), but I'll probably end it after I get out of school (not sure if I'm going to college).

I'll still have years before I stop playing, I'm not even good yet.. :(, hopefully by the time i get good the melee scene will return to it's original prestige.

Of course you change this to a topic encompassing all games instead of just melee after I post... Anyway, same goes for all games. I will never stop playing games, just like people who grew up watching tv don't stop etc.

I love when adults ask me when I'll outgrow games, as if they are something to outgrow... Of course, I always make a comeback "past when you outgrow <insert thing they do often with no intention of quitting such as watching sports/use computer/sing/etc>"

If this is just about Smash, wouldn't this belong better in GBD?
Although there's already a topic about this there, so if it was meant for Smash then get this thread closed and post in that one.

I'll talk about it for video games in general, though...

I've been playing video games all of my life. Regardless of how old I am, I still intend to play video games. As life progresses from being in school to being out in the real world, time obviously decreases for doing what you want to.

However, if you really love video games, you should not have to drop them just to get married and have kids. Married people with full-time jobs still watch TV, correct? They still hang out with their friends, right? Your life doesn't all of a sudden become "all work, all the time" when you get a full-time job, nor does it happen when you get married, unless your wife/husband doesn't want you playing games (In which case, why the hell did you marry her/him?).

As such, you shouldn't have to drop video games. I see myself playing them for as long as I can. Even if video games continue the current trend and decline into the ground, there's always the great systems like NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube.

If you honestly give up video games and you really love them, you're a fool. No offense, I'm saying that as more of a help than to insult you.

I'm going to play video games forever and teach my kids how to play them. I intend on keeping an video game system that's mine for the memories of them.

Wow, this is tough. However, as long as there are loyal smashers out there, I will always be inspired to keep playing.

I don't see myself stopping. I've been playing games since I was about 3. My grandmother taught me how to OWN at Final Fantasy 1 for the NES, and she had the entire game mapped out on envelopes O.o

She, and my uncle basically taught me to love video games, and she's the person in my house-hold who listens to me rant about them.

I have so many things I'd love to share with any kids I have, all the classic games (DKC 1-3, SM64, Pokemon rby, gsc, and everything else, and I'm still loving them all anyway.

I don't see myself stopping, I don't think it's a rite of passage, my uncle still actively plays, both alone and with his son, and he's 47. It's part of my lifestyle choice, as a thinker, and I love challenging myself with such things, and video games have alot of meaning in my life.

I'm not gonna stopm there's really no logical reason TO stop, if you enjoy them, play them.

Well I don't necessarily see why I have to stop entirely. I mean my friend's dad (in his 40s) still plays videogames. Not just casually either, he plays real games like Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed and stuff like that. He's got two kids and a full time job, still plays games.

Everyone needs a hobby, just because you're getting older and developing a fullfilling life doesn't mean you just give up on your hobbies. You gotta do something with your free time, I mean it's not like you're going to just work and be with the family for every second of your life.

Forever. Doesn't mean that it will be on my to do list though. Higher priorities will come and go. However, there's no better escapism than video games.

I see myself playing video games for a very, very, long time.

Just because you don't play it all the time like when you were a kid, doesn't mean that you can't play video games at all. ;)

I will always be playing video games, don't buy new games as often as I used to, but there are so many great games out there already that have seemingly endless replay value, and as long as there is an amazing game coming out every so often, I'll never have a reason to quit gaming.

It depends on where video games go. If the next generation of consoles ends up with everything taking after the Wii, I'll likely find a new hobby.

If that happened I'd just play the old stuff. Heck I'd make my own games.

I'm don't really think people have to grow out of certain things when they get older. I don't see myself ever giving up video games; It could be twenty years from now, and have a full roster of responsibilities and still find time to play at least a bit of games a day. There's no shame or detriment to finding fun in games and things like that, no matter how old you are, as long as you don't let it encroach your responsibilities.

Sadly, I believe the brain may become maladapted to such a multitude of minute stimuli after a certain age, but until then, why not? Normal people watch TV and movies into old age...

I don't intend to get married, but video games will remain in my life as long as I breathe. My mom does'nt understand this though. I don't care, at least my Dad is supportive and doesn't find it as a problem. Maybe it's because he owns me on Tekken: Dark Resurrection at the arcades.

These... and every other response like it in this topic. Oh I'll never be able to play them as much or as often as I did 10 years ago no... but I'll always find some time to sit down and play a game or two.

'sides, I'm gonna be working on them in a couple of years, I think I'd better keep playing them if I want to keep in touch with them haha

that a very good point you presented, why would a person with a love (passion) for something would suddendly abandon it? because it's their choice, not because they are forced to do it. This is very true to me since I am always working mostly a full-time job, and I attend to my girlfriend, but yet I still find the time to play my beloved video games.

it's not whether you should stop playing it or not, it's whether you can find the time to do so and I believe there will always a time in your life when you will have time (that is if you truly love video games) so don't complain.

Seeing as how I plan on making video games for a living I don't think I'll stop playing games at any point in my life.

Plans are funny things, things happen regardless of them.

Everyone plans on making games for a living. Good luck.
He speaks the truth.

Just because you REALLY like playing video games doesn't mean you're cut out to make them. Just as I REALLY like listening to music but still have no hope in Hell of becoming a musician. And I love movies, but I'll never be a director or an actor.

Shoot for the stars, my friend. Just make sure you have a back up plan in the (unfortunately likely) event that you fall.
