Just as an addendum to this, it'd be awesome if high level players would do post set commentaries. Just boot up a finals set or any high level set (or friendlies) on youtube, lower the original volume, and talk over it about why players are doing what they're doing. I think watching pros play is a large part of learning the game but I know I miss a lot of things and don't understand why players do what they do. Platform control, stage control, why they use one type of edge guard instead of another etc. stuff like that, basically the decision making going on behind the tech.

Obviously this is geared towards the semi-bad player who can almost fully control their character but don't know anything about match ups/use wrong moves, but I thought I throw the idea out there. Plus it'd be relatively easy, you don't have to do too much editing, just talk over a couple of videos and put it under a post game analysis header. Could also go over old games and talk about how the metagame has changed if anyone wants to do that.
this is a great idea, would bring overall level of competition up

Yo, The lake, I would love to see a zelda guide. I feel like she has cool tricks that people don't take advantage of, or know how to take advantage of.

There are plenty of people that don't post that would like to learn or would definitely want to watch the Ganon video lol. The information being out there can only help. =)

I just barely get any feedback with anything I say which is why I said this, I get the feeling people don't care.

Lol lots of people don't say anything but watch everything. Not everyone is as vocal as you, Kage haha.

I'm sure any input you can provide would be appreciated. =)

Part of what motivated me to make this thread was a Ganon player asking me to explain some terms to him over FBchat because he didn't understand some of the things the various Ganon guides had.

Well I guess I could give it a shot then, if it's appreciated then it would be nice. =P

KK, I sent Wak a message to get in here.
Maybe he will do videos for character specific guides.

I'd be interested in seeing some new guides (like ganon ones)...

Also, some harder to do techniques lack the explanation on possible way to perform. I.E. I had to ask over these forums so I could get some help on how to perform ganon's ledge waveland (why is a bit trickier than most due to a very low 2nd jump). That I mean is tricks on how to do/how to practice some techniques can be nice input :)

Thissss times a million

Time after time I've witnessed people (including myself) have these epiphanies in which they just figure out what/how to improve their game after hearing something one of the good good smashers say.

I pretty much agree on everything.

I think every character should get an updated, complete guide.
This is an amazing idea, and if done by good players, it will be even better.

I think this idea of a good player commentating his own set is a great idea, in a matter of a fact I always wondered why noone did that already.
First I thought, "hey they got their ideas, they don't want us to catch up with them and give us freely everything they learned with a lot of hard work and time etc etc", but then I saw all the advices u top players give with pleasure on smashboards, and understood I was wrong.

The point is, it get lost in 20000 replies a day XD, and u better be there on time when the advice is given, cause if not you will have to read 5-6 pages to find what you're looking for :p

(As for myself I'm in France, so most of the writing there is done while I'm sleeping... Annoying... :p)

So, this is really a great idea, plus we'll get to see realtime what u're talking about, and trust me, this will be helpful for everyone.

Well, I just posted a guide about reading opponents (which might be poorly received, though one person told me it makes for a good read at the very least). I will get started on some of these Marth video guides soon. I'm trying to get more footage of my Marth so that I can use actual gameplay examples for the guides and not be forced to make contrived footage.

The guides on the character specific sections are ridiculously out of date, not collaborated or agreed upon and largely not helpful. The current stickied guide for picachu suggests not to use upair becasue the dmg sucks. Video guides would be really cool but theres something to be said for simply editing these. To have the guide written by a top player would be ideal.

tldr Great idea :D

It doesn't necessarily need to be written by a top player, and I think there's a valid point to be made that there's a difference between being good and understanding how to be good. That, and I wouldn't trust a top player to necessarily be very good at writing a guide; one of our best Marth players here in Austin generally just wings it, so if you ask him any questions his answers are always long-winded and poorly explained. Comparatively, he's probably better than I am, but a Marth guide from me would probably much more useful for any player of almost any skill level.

Awesome Idea, this is exactly what the community needs. I'd love to help, though I have a recording setup my usual smashers are still training so I don't have people to record footage with effectively. Even so, I would love to contribute and help with topical formatting and anything I can to help aid this project.

I could maybe do Luigi, but my wavedash length has been pretty mediocre since I got a new controller ... so that would be awkward >__> Also there isn't canonical Luigi strategy really so it would probably be pretty biased towards my ideas about the character

So... I would be happy to work on Fox or Marth if people are okay with that. I think I understand the basics well enough to do at least do part of it.

I see PP has volunteered for those characters already but it wasn't clear from his post whether he wanted to make the videos, or just write/design the thing. I will happily defer to him though if he wants them

This is true of any guide. Having different ideas available is a good thing, as it encourages thought, discussion, and innovation.

"Corrupt" is the word you're looking for. You like saying "real talk?" Banned. You don't like Mute City? Banned.

I would be so ****ing psyched if this were successful. I know several people who are quite intelligent in the context of games and in real life who are willing to get into melee, and they'd be great at it. I just can't always teach them all at once and list every option for every technique, etc. This is a greeeaaaat idea.

Edit: this thread's older than I thought. How's it coming along?

Is there anyone who has good video editing capabilities that might want to work with me on this? I can write up stuff and do images in photoshop/gimp but i dont have video editing software. Alternatively if someone could suggest good video editing software, i might be able to work on my own.

I have iMovie on my computer, so could probably do something. I don't have much experience with it, though, so I don't know how well it'd turn out.

You could download the demos for Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas. Those last 30 days, so that might give you enough time to make everything. Those are the best programs I've heard of, since (from my understanding) Final Cut X is terrible.
