NA meta seems to be shifting to it slowly. Double AP works when you get the right bans on the other team

Coupling an obnoxious slow/speed boost, ressurection, map-wide exp boost and an AOE nuke with a character like Sona (who carries a haste, heal, damage debuff/slow and AOE stun) makes it incredibly difficult to reach and eliminate a carry. Any mage can provide his damage output. It was his support elements that made him so strong in that match. The commentators kept on saying "why do they always focus cho?!". It's because there was no choice because sona and zilean protected kogmaw (and themselves) so well.


edit: and yeah all the champions you listed provide great support elements for their team, even if some are primarily mages. Simply labelling them AP carries ignores what they actually bring to the table.

I wasn't saying that they aren't support characters or can't be played in support roles. The point was that most (if not all) characters in this game are capable of being flexible in what they bring to the game. Defining a character as "Support" oftentimes makes people only view them as useless not when played in a specific and nonflexible way. Zilean is a very versatile character due to his massive utility. When combined with someone like Sona(as seen recently at a highlevel) they create a very strong composition offensively and defensively. This however doesn't mean that he is a pure support character.

I wasn't disagreeing with you in saying Zilean can be a support character, it's just 80% of this community seems to think that characters are only defined by what Riot labels them as. Zilean can be quite a strong AP carry while still "supporting" his team.

I was referring to a particular game and this was made clear in my first post. Yes, he has a nice nuke. So do lots of mages. Zilean won that game because of his support utility, not because he was nuking people.
