ABC News said:
A 4-foot-long giant sea worm has been discovered at an aquarium in the U.K. Workers at Newquay's Blue Reef Aquarium unearthed the creature while they were trying to figure out what was attacking a coral reef and prize fish, the U.K.'s Daily Mail reported. The Daily Mail said the tropical worm, named Barry, is capable of permanently numbing humans with its sting.

Apparently it was just "dug-up". This is the kind of **** that absolutely terrifies me. I don't think I'm ever going swimming again.

I'm not really surprised over the worm itself, but the fact they just "found" it lying around. Just the idea that they never noticed it in the first place baffles me. Sure, it could have gotten bigger over time, but still.

It's just the camera angle, the bigger it appears, the greater the awe as a story:-p.

That's the part that sounds a little weird. They should study the water conditions at the depth they found it and try to clone it or something:-p. Perhaps its venom could be used for medical purposes.

I have to say, that's an impressive looking worm. :|

Thank god I'm not much of a beach person anyway; that thing is terrifying. If I saw that when I was swimming, I would scream like a 6-year-old girl.

It looks tasty, I'd like to barbeque it. I'm sure it would feed several people.

Just imagine that you go to the beach with your family for your birth day. It was the best day of you life you had cake and finally got the game you've been waiting for but couldn't get cause your B-day was right around the corner. When you get to the beach you see all your friends there.

You've had so much fun so far you cant see it get any better. Then you get in the water your probably having so much fun that you don't notice the four foot worm in the murky water. You feel something slimy brush your leg your worried at first but you figure its just some sea weed.
Then BAM you feel a sharp pain in your leg then nothing at all. It numbed your leg so bad you cant swim you try to call for help but you sink to fast to say anything. Your friends are thinking your just playing and wait for a few seconds then realize your actually drowning. They swim deep to get to your (now lifeless) body. Now panicking they all try to bring you to shore (the life guards are flirting with each other at this point) your family is freaking out especially your mom. Their asking what happened and no one is answering them. They give you CPR and when you cough up the water you whisper you cant feel your leg, then they notice the blood spurting out from a whole the size of a quarter. They rush you to the hospital.

A week later your in the recovery state but your legs been amputated and it turned out to be the worst day ever.

Now thats creepy.

The annoying part of the actual story is that they never noticed it.
It was attacking the coral reef for months without anyone seeing any sign of it. Glad they desided to finally dismantle the whole thing, otherwise the coral reef would probably have gotten ripped apart.

If my life was that run-on sentance-y, I would probably be glad that I was knocked out for a few hours.

Also.. what does it mean "permanently numb?"

I'm pretty sure it wasn't incompetence. These things hide themselves in the reef very well, often only coming out at night before going back to their little spot by morning. Whether the reef is small (eg in an aquarium) or big, worms like this one (well, smaller obviously) can stay hidden for months or years. Though most of them also aren't dangerous like this one.

I'm pretty sure you can fight one of those in Final Fantasy, so that would probably be the closest you would get =p

Why is everyone saying it's freaky?

Sure it looks strange, but look at the world through Barry's eyes. Would you think that mammals using artificial equipment to stay in water for a long amount of time was freaky?

Yes.

Barry is less freaky or "hellish" than humans or sheep or whatever. As soon as something that looks unusual or radically different shows up it is deemed alien. :(

*shares Barry with Samusbrawler- I'll look after him on weekends *.

You know, when I came into this thread I was expecting to read about a 100 foot worm or something.

I am disappointed.

Man, the ocean is messed up. I would die of fright if I was in the water and saw that.

Back when I was in 4th grade, I was on some island off of Corpus Christi. It was blue crab mating season, but with the crystal clear water, I was able to watch out for them (besides, they're scared enough to scurry away upon hearing my tremors). So, I'm prancing around in the water, having a jolly ol' time when ONE crab escapes my sight by burrowing under the sand, and lo and behold I step on the little bugger. Its shell-spike goes all the way to my bone, right at that arch on the bottom of your foot (unless you're flat-footed), hitting the biggest nerve in the whole shebang. That, the gushing blood (I'm a hemophobic), the rich salt water, and the fact that I was stranded on an island for another two hours until the ferry could come sent be into shock.

It sucked. So, I don't even know what the hell I would do if I crossed paths with that worm. I stay away from going in the ocean without wading boots now (I also came across a patch of stingrays, which thankfully didn't get me - but I did step on one).
