Hey, you know what would be a great idea and also a heck of a gateway into Geno becoming a playable fighter? Spirit board unlocks.

"Wait, Oval, what are you talking about?"

Listen closely, friends. Characters can be unlocked either through the board or through matches in classic mode or whatever. What if we get characters that can exclusively be unlocked through WoL? Either through free updates or through perhaps a paid DLC pack a la Fighter's Pass, this concept is born. Freeing certain spirits in WoL will end up unlocking these spirits as actual fighters along with their spirit. People who have already beaten these fights will have the characters unlocked by default, but people who haven't will have to fight them to unlock them. These spirits are ones that were able to find their lost bodies and aid the cause to defeat Dharkon and Galeem.

Who better to kickstart that idea off with... than a character who is a spirit possessing a body in canon? Eh? Ehh?

Dudette, I don't really know in that case. I'd say those would probably be just separate, misc. DLC characters then, if not free echoes (which Ninten wouldn't be great for, but let's be real, Nintendo unfortunately could do that).

Eh, I don’t think being a spirit is an auto deconfirm (though I think most like the evolution ones are kinda screwed at least for this time around) so I still have hope for him and think he’s got a pretty good shot. Him being one of the last spirits added as well as being the only Mother 1 spirit to not be present in WOL was always kinda suspect to me.

However Claus is in WOL and him being upgraded to fighter status even if he was just an echo would make me so happy you don’t even know.

I know I am way late for the conversation because for some reason I am never notified when people post here anymore. But I have a gut feeling I will hate the entirety of the DLC choices. But then again I've grown to have a really pessimistic world view as I got really used to have any hopes I might have being completely destroyed every chance it can happen. Not sure what you mean by too stuck in it, but if you mean by denying other peoples' hopes and thinking they're delusional for having faith in the pass, then goodness, no. People have every right to wish and dream the way they want, and I have no right to get into that, unlike a lot of other Smash fans who will **** down your throat for even daring to want someone who isn't extremely popular and relevant. (On that note, wanting =/= likelihood and whether they 'deserve' to be in or not, and Smash fans love to blur that line. You can want a character while acknowledging their low to nonexistent chances. Geno fans get a lot of flak for this in particular.)

If you mean to the point of making myself more disappointed and depressed over how my most wanteds are likely not making it (for now), then... that's a valid point. I'm definitely falling into that pit, haha. I don't see any point in hyping beyond what we have in the base game in terms of roster, at least not for me. It's just gonna crush my heart in the end, given my most wanteds are an AT, a spirit, and a character whose series isn't even represented in Smash and lives mainly by fan demand alone.

Joker was pretty cool. The only choice that I would really question with what we know so far is Steve. Minecraft has its fans but I always thought the logical and emotionally satisfying idea was, "If we can put Banjo into Smash, we will." I'll have to wait and see because Steve was only considered out of Minecraft content rumors.

Regardless, let's assume the "worst" for DLC as Joker, Erdrick, and Steve. One is amazing, one is debatably nice to have, one was never considered outside of memes, and two are completely unknown. I'd say wait and see. The last two could hit the ball out of the park.

And even then, Steve might not be real because the Minecraft content is not really something considered after the game came out and Hitagi jumped the gun. This means Banjo could potentially have good odds again. Too early to start hating the DLC when we haven't really seen it yet. In fact, recent news should make us reevaluate Banjo in a much greater light. Minecraft being on Switch was a strong case for Steve. Now that there are rumors of XBox games, including the potential of Rare, coming to the Switch, who's to say Steve had a chance outside of very ambiguous and confusing inside sources? It's not like Vergeben even claimed Steve would be in to begin with so eh.

A character that only really gained traction last year and had a relatively niche following becoming an incredibly hype character? Unexpected, pleasant, suitable. Who's to say we should start doubting Sakurai and Nintendo right now? Apathy towards Erdrick is reasonable, but I think we're losing interest in the DLC over tunnel-vision and pessimism.

It was the second one. If you can recognize that you might be falling into that mindset, then that is good. Sucks that your want situation is the way it is and I can imagine how that can be difficult.

Given how Nintendo is supporting Microsoft, they're technically the ones making the impossible possible here. I'm also sure they of all people remember Rareware from back in the day and how big it was to fans of the N64. The duo were a defining mascot of an era of Nintendo history. If those n64 classics are a possibility, guess what's going onto it. Not to say I have 100% faith in Banjo, but I can say it's the most natural conclusion to make for me. My intuitive guess is Banjo with what we have right now.

In fact, I find optimism in Banjo's chances when it comes to Erdrick. Let's say they put in Erdrick from the good ol' Dragon Quest 3. Say all you want about Erdrick being a matter of business relations and partnership with Square Enix, but Banjo would be the exact same thing for Microsoft. That alone makes me more optimistic about Banjo. Banjo's circumstances are nowhere close to someone like Geno. Banjo is virtually the flagship of Rare. There is actual evidence that Microsoft themselves remember Banjo compared to the evidence of Square remembering Geno. I could go to the Microsoft store in my hometown's mall and find a store display with Banjo photo-shopped onto it alongside juggernauts like Master Chief. Banjo and Kazooie are getting figurines of themselves released as of last year. Banjo & Kazooie are typically always referenced in a new Rareware game. The Phil Spencer tweet admitting he wouldn't mind Banjo in Smash is literal proof that he is remembered fondly. If Microsoft and Nintendo do not remember Banjo for something like Smash to solidify their relationship, then wow. That would be surprising. I wouldn't be angry, I would just be shocked.

I feel like whoever started the 5Chan leaks has the most realistic expectations on the planet with how "logical" they are when Sakurai doesn't work that way.

Heck, that Eddy has even been guessed by fans is still something that is against the grain. You would expect Luminary as a promotional pick, not a guy that hasn't remotely been relevant in ages.

Honestly, considering Nintendo's track record with E3, we'll probably get multiple characters, no more than two. That being said, I can only imagine that they'll pad out post-E3 with other Ultimate content that includes either non-Fighter's Pass fighters, echoes, or some other miscellaneous content. Otherwise, it'll get very stale, unless E3 is such a huge blow-out that it leaves fans satisfied for a while. That, or we'll get a surprise that isn't part of the Fighter's Pass along with character 3 in the pass. It's really difficult to tell.

So do you guys think we might get 2 characters at E3? I'm thinking we are just getting one character, but it wouldn't surprise me if we do end up getting 2 characters at E3 since Smash 4's DLC lineup had Lucas, Roy, and Ryu all released in the same day in June of 2015.

I'm expecting two, yes. Especially given that the February 2020 deadline hasn't budged one iota.

Honestly, considering Nintendo's track record with E3, we'll probably get multiple characters, no more than two. That being said, I can only imagine that they'll pad out post-E3 with other Ultimate content that includes either non-Fighter's Pass fighters, echoes, or some other miscellaneous content. Otherwise, it'll get very stale, unless E3 is such a huge blow-out that it leaves fans satisfied for a while. That, or we'll get a surprise that isn't part of the Fighter's Pass along with character 3 in the pass. It's really difficult to tell.

At least we can be assured it'll be a Ninty/Microsoft-fest, with Sony sitting this one out.
