Polar seems to be leaning on Erdrick (not 100% about him) and trusting other leakers so idk what to make of "No one knows the DLC," that probably just changed.

I see people talking about how Polar's source said that nobody knows the DLC but they said that like at least two months back? Things can Always change which is what's getting to me. People make good points but Things could always change and who's to say the Insiders don't know the DLC NOW but didn't back then.
The point is that the information about Steve and even Erdrick dates back to August, which is completely contradictory to the claim that no one knows the DLC, a fact that was brought up months after. Either these two are really weird, outlier cases, or the information is completely wrong. I think there is some truth to the Minecraft and Erdrick stuff, but the glaring inconsistencies are difficult to ignore.

Didn't she say that she's betting on Erdrick bc it's his name who's been thrown around the most?

Ignore this. I forgot how long ago this dated back as I just woke up, Ovaltine made a good point about this that convinced me that what I was saying wasn't true.

No, it hasn't. "Leaning towards" doesn't mean definitely saying the character is in. Plus, if he changed what he said, that would be backpedalling

@ShotoStar Being an insider with info and learning about who characters are are two completely different things. Polar said that, after the DLC was decided, that no one knew the DLC. Nothing in between that time has changed that. He still stands by no one knowing the DLC.

Let this be a lesson to be careful with your money. If you had funds from a gift card, add them to your Switch funds and only spend it if you're positive about your purchase. Money is a luxury that you can't take lightly. I've been homeless before; I know how precious every dollar is.

Please, please, as someone with not a lot of money to her name whose struggle to even have a roof over her head was crazy, listen to me when I say... be careful with every penny you have.
Well I'm really sorry that happened to you... it's just I have all the games I want right now. And besides I wanted the full roster anyway. Figured using gifted money that is locked specifically to the Switch store to be the best way. So if I'm disappointed by it, it wasn't money out of.my own pocket you know?

You seriously cannot tell me you expected Dragon Quest or Minecraft would be in Smash before an insider mentioned them.
Minecraft, yes, Dragon Quest, no because of the hilariously complicated liscensing. Again, if true, this is the first time Dragon Quest will have crossed over with another franchise and Square Enix/Armor Project/Bird Studio didn't have most if not all the creative control over the project in its 33 year history.

tbh speaking of why you bought the pass, I bought it because I knew that Sakurai would make a moveset I would probably enjoy even if I didn't care about the character very much. I mean, from what I've seen at least, I don't like Corrin very much but she's pretty ****ing fun to play. In fact, I don't know much about most of the swordies, but I main so many of them because of how fun they are. The only character I actively dislike to play is Little Mac because his design philosophy in Smash is kinda awful and he's boring to play as (hey lets make a character that literally can't play half of the game isn't that fun)

I understand your point, yeah. If I were you, I'd have saved those funds until seeing what else the Switch lineup for 2019 had in store, though. After all, what if we get that SMRPG remake we're clamoring for? :4pacman:

Funny enough, it's the other way around. The Steve/Erdrick claims started way before Polar's that nobody knows the DLC. It could have easily changed back, but the massive inconsistency and contradictory points here are glaring.

I'm just confused about how you're taking the Fighters Pass then. Why make complaints about the choices when you were going to buy them anyway and you seem to consider your purchase as not even your own money?

I understand not getting characters you necessarily wanted, I think we all do here, but the refund comment just seems out of place in basically everything you've explained so far.

Yeah, it makes me fairly annoyed when someone makes a funny comment/post and another user ruins the fun.

But not big enough to actually get Rex playable and probably no DLC.
At least Elma from Xenoblade X is still on the table for DLC, unless spirits deconfirm characters. But I don't get how so many people that have never played the Xenoblade series either always overlook or don't know Elma and Xenoblade X exists.

I wasn't saying Polar is 100% on Erdrick, I knew very well what "leaning towards" meant. I even tried to quickly edit my post 'cause I knew I was gonna be misread.

I'm just saying, since he trusts these other leakers saying who the DLC are enough to believe one of the DLCs may be a mentioned character, then perhaps the "no one knows the DLC" thing isn't entirely accurate. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't, anyway, as his source probably underestimated these other guys.

I do, however, think the "Steve was in a tester's build back in August" info is likely incorrect, but since it seems other leakers/sources/whoever have mentioned him anyway (plus it's Minecraft) he still seems sort-of likely (but my fear of him or a Creeper not getting in holds me back, though I'd love B-K as well).

I can't say I really blame them. Marketing was never amazing with Xenoblade. It doesn't help that it was GameStop exclusive for awhile. And then it kinda got lost in the crowd of other anime inspired looking games

I personally have not bought the FP and at this point am glad I haven’t. I’m trying to stay positive and think there is a chance for Geno and BK to be a part of it. If they aren’t and I already bought it I’d have been pissed. I’ve already gotten burned in the past from buying season passes based on things I and others assumed would be on it only to later be extremely disappointed when said things aren’t included. The only thing is though with how invested I am in the game and how often I play online and with friends I’m starting to feel obligated to purchase characters I’m not as interested in because if I don’t I’ll be “missing out”. That said if Steve and Erdrick are actually in those are two that I specifically would not buy even if it means missing out.

I know Elma exists because people kept bringing her up as possibly playable for SSBU

Fair. I'm just completely fed up with anyone who complains about the Fighters Pass after having bought it. Even in joke form. Or even being just disappointed with the idea that such and such character could get in to the pass and leave them disappointed with their purchase.

I'd agree with this if the point of their post wasn't to be funny

The way I see it, if I like all 5 characters, I won't be too broken up about an extra $5. Sakurai and his team got some serious work to do if they wanna sell me Erdrick and Steve.

Sucks that I might miss out on an extra cheeseburger if they're all amazing, but them's the breaks.

Haven’t bought the Fighter Pass either, I also have some ground rules.

Joker was a hella hype pick to me and almost made me buy it, but then I remembered that I don’t know what direction DLC will be taking.

If the second character is also a superhype pick to me (we’re talking Geno, Sora, Banjo, Phoenix Wright, et al), then I buy the Fighters Pass and deal with whatever consequences there are.

If the second character is Erdrick I wait. Partially because Erdrick is just a ‘oh sweet’ character for me, and partially because that would spook me that the Steve-Doomguy-Ryu leak is real. Nothing against the latter two, but I will not give money to Steve nor do I want him in my Switch.

If the second character is just a cool pick or a meh pick I wait.

If the second character is Steve or some other character I’d hate (like Saber, Katalina, Goku, etc) then I just don’t buy the Fighter Pass.

So basically, my ideal second character is Banjo, because then I can buy the Fighter Pass with the knowledge that Steve is basically disconfirmed.

Honestly; after it turns out that people were sitting on "Jack" and "Brave" for like a month, I can't help but feel sometimes that leakers are hiding other things too.
The reason we sat on it was so it wouldn't be removed from the game. Word got out, Nintendo found out we knew and pulled it.

Yeahhhh, I'm not surprised at all, man. Sorry that one of those dudes ended up ratting you out. Now we likely won't have anything much to see via datamines, alas.

There's going to be a January direct. Still trying to pin down the date, but it's looking like early January. There's a chance of a reveal there as well. Again, I'm still trying to get the details.

Then why did you ever buy the Pass in the first place? I'm seriously questioning why a number of people bought the pass and then seem disappointed with it when they bought it on limited knowledge that basically anything could show up. "Faith" isn't an actual reason. You have two options with the Fighters Pass. Either you buy it because you know you want a full roster no matter what or you wait til you see the contents.

Minecraft is the much larger series though. Smash isn't really just a MASCOT fighter by any stretch of the imagination at this point, we've moved well past that in the past few iterations as we've introduced more characters from different series. The difference comes down to which franchise do they want to represent more; The gargantuan powerhouse of Minecraft, or the beloved classic 90's Banjo? You'd pick one or the other for vastly different reasons.

And it seems they were completely justified seeing as how much Brave blew up and Nintendo nuked the code out of the game. They also pretty much have to hold information back so sources don't get in trouble/they can continue getting information.

Figuring out what information to divulge and what not to show is like the main job of a leaker. Being completely upfront about everything would make you a bad leaker and you'd never get informants, so yeah, makes sense.
I bought the fighters pass because I love having more and new characters. Will I regret my choice in the future? Probably, seeing as I'm one of those Nintendo purists and the rumors say we're getting all third-party franchises. But I'll enjoy Joker and everyone else. I bought all the dlc last game for the same reason and I was REALLY against Cloud getting it.

I love non-Nintendo third party characters but I wonder if Nintendo / Sakurai are starting to be a bit reckless with 'em. The most exciting choices of Smash 4 were third party, and Ultimate is kind of similar. Makes the game feel less like a Nintendo celebration.

On the other hand...
But the majority of the third parties were third parties that felt appropriate - Mega Man and Castlevania are two games that had a massive contribution in the NES and SNES' cultures. Final Fantasy did too, so Cloud got in as the "mascot" of FF, even if he is primarily Sony. (Maybe Terra would have been more appropriate for a Nintendo celebration, but Cloud is still a great pick)

Joker is the first character that I think is just totally non-Nintendo IMO.
And then we have Geno, a third-party Nintendo character....

What’s the point in it being in the game if it’s only known by a small and secretive cabal of dataminers and insiders?

I think the argument is that if it was still on the down-low, we might have even gotten more info in yesteday's patch. They might not have taken it out if it weren't for the notoriety the info has gotten. Thus, dataminers could learn even more about these characters.

The info is there for people who know where to look. And word of mouth can spread the info without necessarily revealing the source. This is just theoretical, though. It's clearly not what actually happened.

Surprised about no NoA indies presentation. Then again, the only info I had was about the NoE one, so that makes sense I suppose. This is the first time that there has ever not been an indies presentation uploaded to NoA's channel around the same time as other regions. Huh.

Anyways, direct is still "soon". I, like KingZell, have no updates on that front. Interesting to note that WSJ already knows though, must be just 1 or 2 weeks away.

What’s the point of the info being there if nobody knew about it? Yeah, maybe dataminers would know more today, but the rest of us would know even less than we do now.

So, Polar, do you still stand by nobody knowing the DLC?
