It could be that the Square rep is the very next one. The Joker reveal reminds me of how no one saw K. Rool coming. Everyone might've assumed that Square was first not knowing that it was actually Joker. It could also be that Nintendo stepped up their game after so much of the base roster leaked, especially considering that the team is focused almost entirely on balance and the fighter pass.So you know how every leaker and their dog was saying the Square rep was going to be the first DLC reveal?
What if the reason Joker was shown off at TGA in lieu of the Square pick is because Persona 5 is more modern and mainstream than Geno or Dragon Quest, and thus a more fitting reveal for TGA? Like the Square rep is still there, and let's say it's Geno, but Nintendo decided that Joker would make more of a splash.
I'm neutral on it, but I'm still optimistic for sure. This has probably been talked about, but I'm not scrolling back 50 pages to find out. But how do you guys think Joker affects Geno's chances? I think it's good for Geno because it proves Sakurai bias is still a thing. Also wow, lots of Ninten talk. Seriously, this is the Geno thread. Please take it elsewhere.
On the one hand, the surprise of Joker's reveal opens the door for a lot of characters and franchises that weren't the most common considerations. Bethesda, Microsoft, Undertale, or further selections from current 3rd party collaborators could all be in play--not to mention characters from Nintendo's vast library that could still surprise us. The other concern I have is that the focus may be more on contemporary characters. Retro characters may need to derive from franchises that are still going strong. Even if Joker is a fan pick, Persona is a very well respected franchise throughout gaming. Geno could rep Mario & Luigi for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised by Sora or Lara Croft even though they're not being taken seriously on the list of seven names.
On the other hand, the criteria for DLC has shifted somewhat. Joker and Piranha Plant defying our expectations is a good thing because it shows that nothing is definitive. Characters are being selected not solely for selling power but for design, moveset, fan appeal, etc. It also seems that Sakurai might've had more input than he led us to believe. Joker also strikes me as a solid "balance" pick because Persona is popular in both Japan and in the West. The series may be successful but also brings solid fan appeal. I think Geno can work under those criteria. Even if Geno is more of a hardcore fan pick, he'd be a surprise, bring a unique moveset and design, and would represent Nintendo and Square's renewed collaboration as well as Nintendo's in house RPG series.
I'm hoping that the DLC lineup remains as surprising as it has so far. It should be a fun ride!
