On the topic of emotional reveals, Everyone is Here hit everyone hard for different reasons. For me it was Wii Fit and the Ice Climbers. Wii Fit because after Smash 4 I was pretty convinced that she was going to be cut because of how weird she was, how anyone barely played her, and how the fanbase kind of low-key resented that she was a character to begin with. During the Smash 4 days, I was out of work for roughly 5 months after I graduated from grad school and winning Smash tournaments was basically my only source of income. I'd win and then go to the grocery store immediately afterwards. Of course, Wii Fit is still one of my mains because of this and why I'm very heavily attached to the character (plus her trolly reveal was probably my favorite in Smash history).

The other is Ice Climbers because I love the concept of the characters. My head canon is that they're a couple and, boy howdy, there was a lot of gut punch comics and videos that came out when they were cut. The common head canon was that Popo dropped out of Smash because if he couldn't be there with Nana, he didn't want to be there at all. For a two dimensional NES classic character, that's a weird amount of depth but I found this touching as well as understandable.

I'm pretty sure I wrote an essay here about it back in the Brawl days but Popo and Nana were kind of my romantic relationship ideal. Two people absolutely crazy about each other that were enthusiastic about a lot of the same things and willing to scale the sometimes literal mountains of life together. Even as a teen, I wanted that and in early 20's, I met my wife and in my mid 20's we started dating and in my early 30's we got married. She's my life partner and best friend and I love her more than anything and, in a weird way, she's my "Nana" (yes I know that's slang for grandma) and I'm her "Popo" (pretty sure this is the Italian slang for "butthole" so I really can't win with this metaphor...).

Thinking about Paper Mario: The Origami King releasing in about three days from now, epiphany beckoned. The enlightenment came from the query of, "why did Paper Mario seems to have dropped the traditional RPG elements in its last couple of titles (dropping them completely in Sticker Star)?" Then the element of Super Smash Bros. got mixed with the query. Let's take a look at a simple chronology of the Super Smash Bros. and Paper Mario games

Console = Super Smash Bros. entry, Paper Mario entry
  • Nintendo 64 = Super Smash Bros., Paper Mario
  • Nintendo Game Cube = Super Smash Bros. Melee, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
  • Nintendo Wii = Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Paper Mario
  • Nintendo 3DS = Super Smash Bros. 3DS, Paper Mario: Sticker Star
  • Nintendo Wii U = Super Smash Bros. Wii U, Paper Mario: Color Splash
What's interesting to note here is that the Paper Mario series completely dropped the RPG core elements (leveling up, stat raising, party members) with Sticker Star. Quite unfortunate. However, around that time, Super Smash Bros. 3DS came about, and like it's Wii U twin, the roster received surprising additions, which among them was none other than Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII; one of gaming history's most iconic and widely acclaimed JRPGs. Following this train of thought, that's when an idea clicked.

It had been discussed and brought to the attention of many quite a number of posts ago (and I mean A LOT of posts ago) that the planning for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had started some time around the end of Smash 3DS/Wii U's DLC cycle. This would have been around the year 2015. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was officially announced at the end of E3 2018's Nintendo Direct. That would place the beginning of Ultimate's planning having been three years prior to its initial reveal. Albeit DLC for Smash 3DS/Wii U came some time after the game's release (with Mewtwo being the first), one could wonder if characters such as Ryu and Cloud had been thought of, and perhaps even negotiated during the planning phase.

Let's go back a bit for the sake of clarity. Super Smash Bros. Brawl had begun development in 2005, and it wasn't until May 10, 2006 that Nintendo officially revealed the game at an E3 After-Hours press conference. This was within the Wii era. Super Paper Mario would go on to be released the following year (2007). In the year 2012 both Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U would then begin development, and it wouldn't be until 2013 that both versions would be officially revealed at that year's E3 Direct. Both versions released a few months apart in 2014. Paper Mario: Sticker Star had released around the end of 2012, and Paper Mario: Color Splash within the last quarter of 2016. These titles were around the 3DS and Wii U eras of course.

"Ok ok, so many dates! What's the point of all this?!?!" Alright, time to group the key details out of all of this (and some others that have been discussed in this thread in the past), and why this could bode well not only for Geno, but a revival of Super Mario RPG.

  • Sakurai has stated in the past that he had wanted to add Geno into Smash since around Brawl. Coincidentally, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was added to the Wii Virtual Console service in 2008.
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star released near the end of 2012. It's development as well fell within the same year that Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U began development.
  • It was in Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U that we got the inclusion of Cloud (from Final Fantasy VII) as a playable Fighter, along with the Geno Mii Costume (which was give a bit of more attention than the other costumes). Albeit Cloud was officially added to the roster on December 2015, the next year Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars also released on the Wii U Virtual Console Service (2016).
  • On May 13, 2018, the official Nintendo Twitter account tweets asking followers whether they are "Team Mallow or Team Geno", celebrating Super Mario RPGs 22nd anniversary. Still quite the curious tweet for a game that came out so long ago and never got a proper sequel. Only re-releases on Virtual Consoles, and a recent inclusion in 2017's SNES Classic.
The events that followed from Ultimate's reveal, to its release, to the announcement of DLC fighters, and the GLARING omission of the Geno Mii Costume would seem to have been a build-up or, in a more realistic sense, an arduous chain of negotiations and planning to not only bring Geno to Smash as a playable fighter, but also of reviving the Super Mario RPG IP by removing the RPG elements from the Paper Mario franchise so that it may continue as its own thing and not the makeshift "successor" of the former. Ah, "but what of the Mario & Luigi games" you might ask? Theorizing could lead to think that this has been a top secret project that Nintendo and Square Enix had agreed upon quite a while back, with the participation Intelligent Systems as well (maybe?).

Can I just say, I really hate when people complain about the roster in this game. Just because the last couple of dlc characters weren't ones you personally wanted doesn't take away from the insane quality.

First off, we are ending up with 88 characters MINIMUM. How insane is that? Who could ever have even imagined smash getting that big? We got every character from every game! No one is left out, not even Snake who everyone said had no chance! After all these years, we finally got Ridley and K Rool, the dynamic duo that everyone and their mother wanted since Brawl! We got Simon Belmont, a gigantic fan request from the NES days, and somehow Richter to go along with him! We even got mother****ing Banjo Kazooie! What more do people want? And every character added has had a sizeable fanbase, yes even Byleth. Say what you will, but three houses was crazy popular, and it even won the players choice award at the game awards by a landslide. Shill? Sure. But a lot of people were still happy. Not one character has been a complete waste. We got gaming icon after gaming icon after gaming icon, and most of the big old fan requests. With Lloyd and potentially Dixie Kong likely on the way, the era of big Brawl requests will be essentially over after all these years. And Geno is probably going to show up on Monday. This has been the most ****ing incredible roster I could have ever imagined in a smash game, and honestly, if you're still not satisfied, you should take a step back and look at where we were before ultimate, because there's really no excuse to be complaining now.

I think the idea that nintendo has plans to keep mario rpg's going despite M+L's death and PM's refusal has some merit, but let's keep IS and tanabe as far away from it as possible shall we?

I saw someone complain about the retro reps like ROB and Ice Climbers, saying something like "they should have been AT status at best". God forbid people like those characters, right?

Big if true, but I think the simple answer is more correct with regards to Paper Mario's decline: Kensuke Tanabe wanted to reinvent the wheel by making it a square, and when it inevitably failed he decided he'd rather flatten a corner at a time until it worked rather than make it into an actual wheel.

Sure, but none of them were the characters I wanted. I wanted Edgy the Hedgie, Billy the Puppet and Ara Ara Bait, but all of those characters were relegated to Assist Trophy, Spirit or Mii Costume. And it doesn't matter if they add them in after the fact, I didn't get then when I thought they'd be included, so I'm going to forever be a massive **** about the whole thing to everyone and anyone around me.

Hakurai can kiss my grits and gargle my gravy!!

It is going to be hard for any game to top Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

1000+ music tracks
88 characters and still counting
300+ stages (including Battlefield and Omega forms)
Over 1500 spirits to collect and more are still coming.

The main problem with any future Smash installment beyond Ultimate is how they could realistically top this game when all is said and done, but as Sakurai has said, it's very likely we'll never get a game this big ever again.

What we really need to complement your post is a meme from Avengers Endgame where Doctor Strange has hundreds of people/characters pouring in through all the portals and Wong turns to him and says "You wanted MORE?!" Just throw a Geno cap on Doc Strange and it would be perfection.

Might be a bit late, but I wanted to share my "most emotional" reveal, which so far has been Mega Man. At the time, I didn't really follow speculation or such, in fact, I wasn't even thinking much of it. I just so happened to tune in at the 2013 E3 Direct (which was also the first one I decided to watch, funny how things happen). So before I go into the reveal itself, I'll go into the background of it a bit: At the time, Mega Man as a series was in a pretty rough shape. It had 3 games cancelled in a row, anyone who was a fan of it would've told you the series was pretty much dead. It had nothing to go with further. This made me pretty sad at the time, because MM is one of those franchises that has stuck with me forever, and to see it just go like that... It didn't feel very good. Then, going back to this Smash 4 reveal, of which I wasn't expecting much to begin with: At the very end of it, there he was. I noticed him instantly on the cliff, even before he got the helmet on. It was Mega Man. He wasn't dead! To this day, it feels surreal.

Right after him, I'd put Sonic, also one of my favorite franchises for a long time, and just seeing him in a Smash Bros. game was pretty crazy. It's why I still stick playing him, haha. And tied with Sonic, maybe even MM, it's Banjo & Kazooie. Similar to Mega Man, this felt like a "revival" to me. I was finally seeing these characters in something new after so long. It got me really happy, even now... Overall, the Ultimate newcomers were pretty good.

I hope this can happen with Geno too. It's about time him and the SMRPG crew made a return.

The mini-boss theme is underappreciated, IMO.
Oh, definitely. How the Hell Shimomura came up with those instrument combinations is beyond me but the end result is brilliant. Rolling snares, record scratches, clarinets, and brass that has the most similar sound profile to a goddamn trombone; who comes up with that?

Haven't seen anyone mention it, so sorry if I missed it, but Zippo seems to now also be backing up that there's a direct coming next week, along with giving a bit of info on the rumored Mario collection.
So now there’s the French guy, Zippo, and if I recall King Zell backing the direct? We’re potentially almost there for a Geno reveal boys.

Thank you all for the the warm welcome!
Hi dude, i really I appreciate that you are here, waiting if the star warrior descends once again, I really admire Italy because one of my best friends is from there, but I have a question, how did you do to play SMRPG in 97? It is did not come out in europe and should have waited until the wii? Could you clarify that for me? please
It's not easy to explain, here you can find two youtube videos on how the game managed to arrive in Italy (you can set subtitles in English). I hope everything is clear! Otherwise I'll try to explain it to you as soon as I get home!

Zippo joining in is all but effectively saying the rumored direct on the 20th is indeed real and not a hoax. At this point, less than a week remains

This, so much this. I get Ultimate isn't a perfect game by any means, but I seriously have no idea how some people can be unsatisfied at this point. This is the largest roster in fighting game history and this game has only been out for almost two years now, but yet Smash Ultimate beat the two decade old record of Street Fighter II being the best selling fighting game of all time, and that is absolutely crazy to me. I remember people were saying Sakurai would take a long break after Sm4sh, but instead what he did was develop the best and most ambitious Smash title yet in secret, and I can't be more thankful enough, especially since he included some of my most wanteds like King K. Rool and even Banjo & Kazooie.

I get Sakurai isn't perfect and he isn't immune to criticism, but Sakurai is like a role model to me and he always goes the extra mile with everything he does, and that is what is very admireable about him.

Ok but i am going to a class so i will watch it later
To summarize, an Italian company called CDverte bought the original NTSC versions of the game and modified the chip inside every copy and then transplanted the card into the PAL case. It was sold in the '97 as an official Nintendo version in Italian stores with the box and the instruction booklet! I'll take a photo of my copy :D

Another interesting thing in Brawl is that Mario's final Smash was based off of his fire ball attack in SMRPG.

Goes to show how Sakurai was thinking of Geno and SMRPG when he was making Brawl.

Haven't seen anyone mention it, so sorry if I missed it, but Zippo seems to now also be backing up that there's a direct coming next week, along with giving a bit of info on the rumored Mario collection.
As long as they have updated the game so there is no glitches and better camera controls, I have no interest in that collection to be perfectly frank

Sakurai did mention that Final Smashes were originally planned for 64, so I wonder what it could have been for that game? Would it have been the same FS?

Oh, definitely. How the Hell Shimomura came up with those instrument combinations is beyond me but the end result is brilliant. Rolling snares, record scratches, clarinets, and brass that has the most similar sound profile to a goddamn trombone; who comes up with that?
I nearly went on a super long tangent just for me to end up saying that the track is one of the most late 80s early 90s rap/hip-hop inspired tracks a video game could possibly have, but that's my story and I'm sticking with it... so I don't really wonder how Shimomura came up with it as much as I am, as usual, in awe that composers made it work given the limited sample pool they had on the SNES.

I've said it in passing before but if you want underappreciated SMRPG music, Factory is the answer. Completely untouched, using the exact same samples, the track wouldn't be out of place in a PS2 era Final Fantasy. Fits the tone of the area perfectly without dragging the game's atmosphere any further into darkness.

Also Fatmanonice Fatmanonice I know I used your post about the state of the Geno fanbase as a springboard for an admittedly kickass joke that totally had to be made, but just so you know, it really made me re-evaluate my thoughts on post-Geno (because come on, we all know he's coming) speculation in a very positive way. There was a time when this video game speculation stuff was fun for everyone involved and wasn't very nearly literally a business, and even if a guy like me isn't out here holding onto secrets (well, not many), there's a lot of good that can be done for the community at large, and the state of speculation for the (at least) year that we have left with it in Smash, and even games beyond that.

Ok, this is way overthinking it, and i dislike this type of conspiracy theory. Ignoring how Smash Bros for 3DS and Wii U were meant to be the same game on different consoles with minor bonuses to each, we know why Sticker Star turned out like it did, and it has almost everything to do with misusing advice from Miyamoto and aiming the game at a far younger audience, combined with them feeling threatened by the Mario & Luigi series stepping on their toes. To go into such a tirade about how this is nintendo trying to surprise us, over a game that came out 8 years ago is kinda insane. If they were planning a remake of Super Mario RPG, why would Nintendo remove their in house Mario RPG? Especially for a project that would take 8 years to complete? You also ignored the whole "But what about the Mario and Luigi series?" thing despite bringing it up. It makes no sense as both an artist and a coperate entity to sabotage your own product so a simple remake that won't be out for a decade won't have it's toes stepped on.

I'm late, but welcome to the thread CARMi CARMi ! It always warms my heart to see other Geno fans coming out of the woodworks, each of us from our own places and from our own walks of life. I wasn't even aware that SMRPG had a following in Italy way before it actually got released on the Wii VC over there! Especially since the fact that the game skipped out on an European release back in the SNES days is a major point of contention some people use against Geno. Stuff like this blows my mind.

Either way, hope you'll enjoy your stay!

I'm curious what he's talking about for 3D World. My personal hope is that Nintendo finally said "**** it" and Wario, Waluigi, and Daisy will finally be playable in a Mario platformer. On the topic of caving to long time fan demands, one goofy AF rumor is Geno and Mallow eventually coming to Mario Kart Tour and my reaction is likely what all of yours are... WTF? On one hand it would hilarious while on the other hand it's the definition of Monkey Paw **** and I'm 99% sure it's bull**** or leakbait. Do characters cost money because there's no way in hell Square would agree to free cameos if they practically kicked and screamed about Cloud not coming back as DLC a second time.

Paid DLC is Square's kinda deal, so that would make sense for Geno and Mallow to be paid DLC...unless Square sold them the Super Mario RPG character rights.

I doubt the Mario Kart rumour is true, but it isn't impossible. Most gacha characters cost money/in-game premium currency in order to roll, and Mario Kart Tour is no different (I think, I haven't played it). Square-Enix themselves aren't all that strange to collabs with other 3rd party gachas either. A quick google search shows that they've collabed multiple times with puzzles and dragons; even adding Cloud, Tifa, and Sephiroth to the game as limited time characters. And that's only FF7, other FF games have collabed too, and on top of that Square's other properties like FMA as well. So all in all they are pretty open to it.

So really all Nintendo has to do is ask for the rights to put in Geno and Mallow in Mario Kart Tour, and it's done. Square Enix has no reason to say no, because it's just free money for them.

Mario Kart Tour has exceedingly expensive characters if I'm remembering correctly. The Diddy Kong pack cost £39.

I can see both Mallow and Geno being added to the rumored Mario Kart game, maybe as DLC to please square, but definitely not for Mario Kart Tour.

Do you guys expect a double whammy reveal similar to last E3? Personally I don’t myself but the idea of It is super cool. If we do I’m hoping it’ll be a combination of either Geno, Lloyd, Crash or Dante respectfully.
