Basically Smash spec was centered waaaaaaaaaay more on first party and second party characters. There of course were some 3rd parties that were requested but the big boys were First Party characters and always have been. With the minor exception of Banjo and Geno but they are still viewed like first party so they got a pass. Up until Cloud rocked the mentality that being considered Nintendo mattered in Smash and then Joker threw speculation for the pass into complete disarray by again showing Nintendo history wasn't important and that they were likely going to focus on 3rd parties for the pass. So with the mind set spec had before those two characters it's very easy to see why it's exceedingly likely first and second parties did well on the ballot.I... what?
The point wasn't that Nintendo focuses on 3rd parties but rather at that time most of the 3rd parties with large major Nintendo ties were already in so during the ballot era the weren't the focus from fans.Well yeah, typically they're gonna add more first parties because they don't cost a thing.
They are one in the same. But yes Sakurai did indeed mention he came from the ballot. And the fact that the croc got a Mii Costume in 4 after his dominance during his time further cements that. Was KKR added explicitly because of the ballot or because they were aware of the fan demand for him?
Nintendo has always owned K Rool. But they've also always owned Golden Sun which is why it's first party but you used that as an example of second party. Your definition of Nintendo not developing the game themselves turns many notable properties into second party including Smash itself. Basically a simplified version of how second vs first party works is ownership. Nintendo doesn't own Pokemon or Fire Emblem but there are publishing and contractual and other reasonings as to why they are a part of the Nintendo brand. But if it's still too confusing just know 2nd party isn't technically real it's just a term to distinguish between a unique situation with Nintendo's IPs kind of like 4th party isn't a real thing but is used to distinguish between non gaming media characters and non Nintendo gaming characters.K Rool I don't actually know what he was back in the day (did Nintendo always own him?); as of now, he is first party though. Also yeah, second party isn't exactly clear; it's never been. Pokemon is one of the best examples because while Nintendo doesn't entirely own Pokemon, it's always associated with Nintendo-only (since Nintendo does have a partial ownership of TPC). That said, I believe Nintendo has never once actually developed a Pokemon game (if they did, it was spin-off only since only GF has ever done the primary development of the mainline series). It's essentially some combination of first and third party as weird as that is. Regardless though, K Rool, when added, is an effectively dead, first party Nintendo IP. Nintendo 100% owns him plain and simple.
