True, that and if a character must be upgraded from assist trophy status, I'd rather it be Isaac given how his fans have waited so long for this character to be given a proper comeback. Like Geno, Isaac was one of the big names for fans.
There's a lot of neat AT choices.

My personal favorite is Ashley among them, really. Isaac is a close second, though~

Among spirits, Geno is an easy one to see as a plausible upgrade. Though who else could work? Fiora? Elma? Bandanna Waddle Dee? Mallow might get a hat, though. Any Final Fantasy character... wait. Not much else I can think of. Maybe some Pokemon outside of the Gen VIII spirits.

Geno also has the benefit of already being a spirit in his own universe possessing a action figure/puppet, so they have in-universe lore to justify it.

True, but I doubt they're going to have some meta reason. No reason to do that when it's as simple as "I want him playable, and Nintendo and SE said yes."

Man, we've been rooting for Geno for so long, and while rooting for our puppet boy, we've been trolled, been in arguments with each other, have ended up getting this thread locked several times, etc. My main point is...

Wouldn't you guys say we've been through a lot since Smash Bros. Ultimate was announced? I hope Geno gets in in Fighters' Pass 2 to end all that, do you?

Practically speaking, I agree with you, but you gotta admit, it would be hype as all hell if Geno's reveal trailer played on the whole spirit-possession thing and showed him going back into the doll after all this time. Not only would that be glorious to watch all by itself, but it would be the most delicious slap to the face for all the "sPiRiTs DeCoNfiRm" detractors out there.

About what Verde Coeden Scalesworth Verde Coeden Scalesworth said about Waluigi, particularly thinking of a moveset for him, let me remind you all...

Sakurai created movesets for Duck Hunt, Mr. Game and Watch, Fox (who spends most of his time in the Arwing in his games) and a freaking F-Zero racer named Captain Falcon. Sakurai can surely think of a moveset for Waluigi if he can think of movesets for those characters.

I think the thing Geno also has over Waluigi now is having more material to have a coherent pack compared to Waluigi since the next pass is getting structured the same. I think it if it was structured like Smash 4 Waluigi would fare better.

Walugi does have stuff to work with, but really, it doesn't matter if his music/spirits match up with him either. They could just dump miscellaneous stuff with him. His stage could even be pokefloats, why not.

Well, that's not a meta reason to make him playable.

That's a meta reference in the trailer. Just like the "too many swordsman" joke in Byleth's. That I could totally see happening.

The first meta reference(unconfirmed) I remember is Chrom being Roy's echo. Roy's actually moveset looks like a fusion of Ike and Marth's. Why didn't Chrom get in? Because he was too similar to Ike and Marth. Thus, it's a potential meta joke. I think what really happened is the proportions fit Roy better and he simply used Ike to remake a new Up B variant.

Mr. Game & Watch was based upon actual games to create his moves, so he had a lot to work with. The others are good examples, though. At the very least, he had stuff to draw from or excuses. Captain Falcon officially fought as a bounty hunter, and took action in a comic, giving some ideas. He's based upon Japanese Superheroes too, so that helped. Also, his animations might've partially came from the Dragon King the Fighting Game beta characters(since it used the same model).

Maybe for Game and Watch, but before Smash Bros 64., we never saw Captain Falcon do the Falcon Kick, Falcon Boost, Falcon Dive and in Melee, the Raptor Boost. From what I remember, he only did the Falcon Punch later in the F-Zero anime. I could not realize that there may be a game where he did that, but for the other moves? Though he always was a bounty hunter, Sakurai effectively created all those moves for him before he could use them outside of Smash, if I am not mistaken.

Like I said, he's based upon Japanese Superheroes.

Yes, Falcon can fight. How he fights was not translated at all. He never uses his gun, the only canon thing he did.

Fox only has special moves resembling abilities in Star Fox, but that's kind of it, anyway.

Regardless, Sakurai isn't taking liberties as much anymore. A lot of them still take small ones here or there, sure, but it's most focused on actual abilities. Shulk is one of the few with unique Monada Arts that don't exist. Brawl still had stuff, like Lucario's Aura, and R.O.B. himself. 4 for the most part relates to official abilities(not necessarily game-only either). Ultimate kept pretty official-based, at least.

After watching The Byleth presentation for the 6th time. He's actually not horrible Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a great game and I'm happy about his/her inclusion. Do I agree with it? No but their in let's move on and enjoy the character along with Garreg Mach Monastery.

Anyway Worried about Fighter pass Volume 2 but I know it'll deliver Esspecially if our Boy Geno is in!

Who's to say he won't take liberties again? He can still come up for something for Waluigi. Plus, I can see Waluigi using a bunch of Mario Party and Mario Sports stuff. What's wrong with using that? I am sure Sakurai can take liberties for a character like Waluigi if he has to. He may have based some abilities for characters from past games, but he doesn't always have to, ya know. Plus, we still have characters like Duck Hunt, who uses attacks from games other than the one they appeared in. The same can be applicable for Waluigi if Sakurai wants to do that.

He still can, as he always does. But it's just not done as often as previous games. He doesn't have to because more data is available to work off of now. We might have more Marios(who is almost entirely from the games) and less Falcons.

Not saying he can't, just saying it's not as often used.

Still, this is Sakurai we are talking about. Not only has he thought of movesets for the characters I mentioned, but he often changes his mind on things. He was opposed to Mii Fighter, Villager and Ridley (or had a hard time finding a way to make him playable) being playable before for reasons, but he changed his mind on them later, or found ways to make them work.

My point is, with that, if Sakurai doesn't take liberties on things much anymore, you never know when or if he will change his mind on that for Waluigi, or pretty much anyone.

To be fair, I'd argue that we have more data with which to make a Waluigi moveset than we did a Piranha plant moveset, yet here we are. And ironically, the fire spit maneuver (and I mean actual fire ball spit, not that Back air excuse for a fire ball) isn't even really utilized with PP's moveset in the first place. That is, what little data we had for PP wasn't even used, so there's really no telling how Sakurai will go about making a fighter playable. Mind you, I'm not really an advocate for Waluigi, but my point is that Sakurai can make anything playable if he really wants to. The only question is whether he actually WANTS to.

GeNO, we can.
Are we really debating about move sets for characters if they are not viable or not? Sakurai does whatever the heck he wants and will make a moveset for a character. Villager is in a fighting(party) game. Enough said.

Also, Geno, Geno and Geno. (Ha! Can't warn me now!)

^^^ I love how the above conversation has nothing to do with Geno, I make a comment and use the name Geno and I get the warning and warning for SPAM. Fascinating. I think I should have said: Geno, Geno, Geno-discussion-in-support-of-his-character-and-am-curous-what-moveset-Sakurai-will-make-work.

PP had tons of moves from various actual Piranha Plants species. He took abilities from the actual RPG's too. In addition to that, very few moves didn't fit what it did, like the Up B, a spinning leaf move. It's a very faithful moveset that has barely any made-up abilities.

Waluigi surprisingly doesn't have a ton of abilities overall. He has a few, but you also need a coherent set of options to work with. You can't just fill it out. They have to interlock together well. He still hasn't apparently been able to imagine the moveset in his mind yet. No matter how many unique abilities you have, that's not the whole picture. How do they work well together to make someone work? That's what's important.

Still, this is Sakurai we are talking about. Not only has he thought of movesets for the characters I mentioned, but he often changes his mind on things. Those aren't exactly great examples, because it's not that simple. He wasn't really opposed to Miis, as he wasn't able to think of how to make them interesting as avatars. Villager was more "can't figure out a working moveset" too. Ridley was actually too big. He couldn't be proportioned right. They made an all new model to fix that.

Oh, he can easily change his mind on who to add. Taking liberties is its own factor, though.

--------------------

Anyway, for animations, the head nod is a good taunt at least. Depending what move is used for his multi-shot, he could use the basic attack animation for it.

Those weren't the only examples, just the ones I can think of from the top of my head. There is also that he did not want an Adventure mode in Smash 4 and the next game, well, we know what happened. It is not the examples themselves here that matter but what happens in them. Point is, he changed his mind on things, and he can do it with liberties if he wants. In fact, he can change his mind on anything. Nothing is really ever set in stone with Sakurai, and that includes taking liberties.

Also, about your response to Firox, I think you are underestimating Sakurai here.

That said, for Geno, how about putting his hand out like he is saying "Stop!", like he has done before with Bowyer and maybe others?

Nobody is underestimating Sakurai, honestly. It's a case of things not being all that simple either. It's just the comparison didn't work cause Waluigi definitely has less ability than PP, so is harder to make a unique moveset for. He totally can do it.

I like the Stop! one, that said.

Harder, maybe, but I still think there are more Mario Party and Mario Sports based moves, and possibly more than that which can be used for Waluigi, you just have to look harder or think harder.

Glad you liked the Geno idle animation I had in mind, by the way.

Thread's back, time to post THE IMAGE.

I don't think they'd be randomly dropped. I mean, the Geno and Chocobo Hat weren't randomly dropped, they came with Cloud. And with Hero, the only costumes that came were from Dragon Quest, as opposed to every other Fighter Pass thus far that has come with at least one unrelated costume. This to me seems to indicate that, for whatever reason, Square prefers their stuff to release only alongside other Square stuff.

Oh ****, you're right! It's completely gone! So were they taken down by Nintendo, or did they just decide to close it themselves?
Yes the 2 Square ones and the Heihachi costume are indeed in a special position as they have been held back when they really had a reason to return, drawing parallels between Smash 4 with the 2 SE costumes releasing with the new SE character and the Heihachi costume joining the Virtua Fighter costumes along with the release of the new fighting game rep.
The Capcom costumes itself had no reason to return, but seem to all return without a new Capcom character which makes me doubt we'll get a new one, unless they really throw away any pattern or system with the mii costumes. I thought the Capcom costumes would return with Banjo, but that got debunked as we got some other returning Capcom costumes during season 1.
Also counting all old 3rd party costumes together with all the new DLC costumes in the waves (so Rex or Ancient Armor don't count) we get 32 costumes which does not fit 6 costumes distributed evenly across 5 characters. That part of my theory got debunked. It might be more of a loose guideline.
But in the end Geno, Chocobo and Heihachi's costumes are still noteworthy in being especially weird omissions.

We had 4 companies with mii costumes in Smash 4: Namco, Square, Capcom and Sega

Two of them got a DLC character in Ultimate.

Sega got a new character with new costumes and all former costumes returned by now.
Square got a new character with new costumes but none of their old mii costumes have returned by the end of season 1.
Capcom didn't get a new character or new costumes and 2/3 of their old costumes have already returned with those being linked to a playable character while the others are linked to an assist trophy and boss battle.
Namco didn't get a new character and also had no new or returning costumes by the end of season 1.

Speaking of Geno, what do you guys think his idle animations would be?
I mentioned it in the past but, I’ve always felt it’d be almost like a hybrid of ness and sonics as far as just the standard animation, basically where his arms are kinda at rest and maybe leisurely swaying side to side similar to ness, but occasionally he brings em up in a fist similar to sonic showing he’s focused on the fight.

Now as for the more “elaborate” animations....honestly idk. Obviously neither sonic or ness’s more unique animations would work. Only thing i can think of is the “walking in place” animation that many rpg npcs back in the day had(including smrpg) but that’d probably look really weird/silly. Maybe he adjusts cap similar to mario? Or goes through his gun arm animation similar to what megaman does.

Man really all I can think of are things similar to what other characters already do...

IMO, I've looked at it this way; focus on what Waluigi could have for a unique moveset mechanic first. This is what creates a coherent moveset. If you can throw in stuff like a few sports moves, cool. But they don't make a coherent moveset.

As I said, he's not filling out the blanks. He's look for a basic idea of how he'll play, and then uses moves that fit that. Having his own unique abilities is the perfect start to that. He himself can swim in the air, for example, or bring out his own potted plant. This is a good start. He could be more of a cheater-style character. I think the issue is finding an archtype first, basically. Anyway, it's derailing a bit, but the Waluigi topic might have some good thoughts there on how to do it.

Back before I really knew how the archtypal movesets worked, I didn't think on coherency either. This is why my first Brian moveset was mediocre. I later gained some knowledge of character creation, and thus, my mindset on stuff changed. But anyway.

----------

There's a ton of neat Geno animations to use, so that'll be fun. :D

Yeah, I just don’t see it. There’s huge differences between ZSS and Tomb Raider. She’s just not that flashy of a character and isn’t even doing a lot of flips and whatnot like ZSS. Her weaponry also isn’t as flashy as Snake. Despite her world having fantasy/sci-fi elements Lara herself isn’t that dissimilar to any other generic action character with military grade weapons. She just doesn’t even seem like the type of character Sakurai would want to add as a full character with spirit board, music and all that. At best I see her as a mii costume like Altair from Assassin’s Creed. Maybe she’s the top secret SE mii costume fatman brought up.
I doubt she would be a mii costume, unfortunately her attire isn't that different from normal casual clothes. I just cant see her character translating well into a recognizable mii costume. If anything I feel like at that point she just wouldn't be included at all.

Worrying about the move set of a character is fairly pointless with a game like this. They've made characters like Duck Hunt and Pac man work just fine with their limited material, and as MonkeyDLenny mentioned earlier there are gimmicks that could be implemented into her game play.

Unfortunately for Sora and Geno she has way more of a legacy to actually warrant her inclusion in a game that apparently celebrates video game history.

Between Sora, Lara, and 2B(I think shes owned by square right?), Geno does have a lot of solid competition if we are expecting to only see one square affiliated character in this pass.

Wow I got a warning from the mods, when there is a debate on move sets of non-Geno related character and I actually use the name Geno in my message. I see how this works.

Also, Geno would be a lot easier to create a move-set in comparison to the other "unique" fighters out there since there is a lot to pull from Mario RPG.

People always forget about Bubble Bobble when they discuss Smash, considering that they're owned by Square Enix. They also have a big legacy.

Neku is also criminally under discussed; considering all the stuff he has in terms of moveset, stage, and music. On top of that Tansut leaked a potential TWEWY sequel on Switch back in October.

I guess Randi and a Bravely rep are also possible since they have some legacy on Nintendo.

But yeah, I think Bub and Bob along with Neku are decent competitors to Geno too.

Well here we are, after the third thread lock in the past two months. That was a load of... understandable decisions given how we were behaving. Yeah, I'll say that...

Anyhoo, how's it going fellow Genobros? What else is there to discuss about Geno that we haven't already, eh?

Geno merchandise like hats being more likely after his inclusion in Smash?

Wow I got a warning from the mods, when there is a debate on move sets of non-Geno related character and I actually use the name Geno in my message. I see how this works.

Also, Geno would be a lot easier to create a move-set in comparison to the other "unique" fighters out there since there is a lot to pull from Mario RPG.
I'll clarify from the context here; for the record, I do think we swerved off topic too.

From what I've see there, is that you were trying to spite the mods instead of being reasonable about it. I mean, why not just report it? When you faked being on-topic by throwing Geno in there, you literally spited them. Also, from what I understand, they're only hitting posts that are severely off-topic for too long or done just to spite the mods in general. They don't want people commenting about the thread locks, etc., but just to move on. That includes not worrying about off-topic stuff.

Not saying I agree on this one myself, but I can see where it's coming from. I did attempt to stop the Waluigi stuff and have it go somewhere else cause I agree we were getting way beyond Geno in general, despite it clearly starting from that idea.

Probably bound to get a lot of hate for this, but don’t you guys think that Geno also has potential as a “premium” Mii Costume, much like Sans and Cuphead? If so, what music would he come with?

I'd have to agree. In terms of you and I, we were kinda getting out of hand there.

So, what else is there to talk about Geno? Oh, what moves would utilize the timed hits mechanic if he has it?

Definitely his Finger Gun stuff. If not all moves related to that.

Maybe all special moves as well?

This post was warned for spam and off-topic discussion.
Imagine killing a thread via suffocating discussion to only a few select things that have already been talked about to death, couldn't be any of us bruh!

Hello everyone. The staff has discussed this issue with the Geno thread at length and perhaps there was some confusion in regards to what is allowed and what isn’t allowed to be discussed. Of course, we want the thread regulars to feel at home without feeling restrained or limited. That being said, we also have to enforce the site rules and one of those rules in curtailing off-topic discussion. Voicing particular characters you want to see in Smash or speculating about incoming fighters is, in our eyes, permissible. Especially if it can be tied with Mario or SMRPG. That’s just general Smash chit-chat and every post doesn’t have to include “Geno” in it. This also goes for discussing confirmed in-coming content such as Byleth or the second Fighter’s Pass. A few posts here and there to discuss other SquareSoft or Mario characters, feelings on the upcoming fighter’s pass, Directs/Presentations, etc is perfectly fine and I am sorry if we didn’t convey that intention originally.

What we do want the thread regulars to do is avoid drawn out discussions on non-Geno discussion that lasts for pages and pages, leaks and rumors, other characters and their chances, and non-Smash water cooler talk aka “So Bob, did you catch that game last night?”. One thing the staff is in agreement about stopping is pages and pages of non-Geno conversations, discussion on banned users, the status/recent issues with this thread , any off-site drama including content from Gamefaqs and Twitter, and using this thread as a way to lash out at other entities that are anti-Geno. Also, please be advised that trying to bring up this post and start a debate on it will count as a spam. If you wish to debate this, please feel free to private message me or to open a thread in Ask an Admin/Ask a Moderator.

I hope this all helps the thread move forward with tons of great discussion and, fingers crossed, Geno in Smash.
