If I recall correctly...
Joker was 5:50 to 8:00 P.M., PST on April 17th
Hero was 5:50 to 8:00 P.M., PST on July 30th
Unless you meant the type of maintenance, in which case I have no idea.
Nah, I meant the times. Just checked the others too. Terry was 4:50 PST to 7:30 PST, and Banjo was 5:50 PST to 7:30 PST... Not going to say it guarantees anything, but we could have something here, the times of those and the new ones are pretty similar.

I'm honestly going to be very surprised if it's not next week. What has me convinced is the fact that the online service is getting a maintenance period for what should be a routine firmware upgrade

There was a problem fetching the tweet

If something big was coming like say, actual themes and a theme store, that's definitely Direct worthy.
No, you’re definitely onto something. Plant, Joker, Hero, Banjo and Terry all had this EXACT SAME THING happen the day they were released on. They’ve always had a maintenance period the day they were released on, and what do they all have in common? They were all related to online play of software!

A hilarious timeline I've been entertaining is one in which Fatman's The Post is totally wrong but cacomallow is real and we still get Geno.

Here's how I could see that playing out: Occam's Razor is in full effect, the reason we're seeing a Doom enemy mii costume is because we're getting a Doom protagonist character as Fighter 5 (lol he comes with the other Megaman Mii costumes). Fighter 6 is, in fact, a bonus, but sorry Purple Pie Man (I've been calling him Robbie Rotten), it's Geno from Super Mario RPG with a Square rep's typical paucity of music (Forest Mushrooms and Armed Boss anyone?). Mii Costume Leaker is right, we get Smithy, Mallow, Chocobo and (just a wild guess) Crono Mii costumes. Yep, that means Power of Two is dead (we got Geno though sooo).

Then Pass 2 commences: I think we still have to consider Crash and Lloyd very likely reps but I think the Second Pass might be kind of a repeat of the first. Big anchor reps surrounded by big characters no smash fan was predicting. Let's go with Kiryu from Yakuza, Kasumi from DOA and freakin Sam Porter Bridges from Death Stranding (lol our first indie rep).

Am I the only one who thinks that Dovakin is most likely leakbait? Because all of this talk about him reminds me of the discourse surrounding Steve before Banjo was revealed: The customizable avatar main protagonist of one of the biggest, most prolific games ever made is heard by insiders/speculators as a new character coming to Smash, acting as direct competition to another character from the same company who most people would prefer to see get in instead.
Fatmanonice Fatmanonice Thoughts on this? You talked about many times before how Steve was pushed to try and hide Banjo & Kazooie, and you always mention Occam's Razor... so wouldn't Doom Slayer being #5 being the simplest solution? Again, characters aren't always widely heard of before release (Joker, Terry, etc.), for those who are hearing a specific Bethesda character, it could just be a red herring. While normally the Occam's Razor (simplest) solution would be just to accept what is being heard, but due to Cacodemon, wouldn't Doom Slayer be the simplest solution?

I can see Dovahkin being leakbait for Doomguy. It seems some are a little over confident.
I'm totally with you. Feels like there's just so much more going on for DOOM than Elder Scrolls right now to warrant an inclusion into Smash.

I talked a bit about this with my good friend Spatulo Spatulo but i wanted to share my prediction here to, I'm predicting that the reveal trailer for Geno will be a retro follow up of Terry's trailer but with SMRPG gameplay (stopping at the SNES instead of Neo-Geo and showing the battle with Bowyer but when Geno shows up it turns into a CGI trailer and they showcase him as a playable fighter, Forest Maze stage and Bowyer as a stage hazard)

I never considered this. Care to go into more detail on the specifics of how he is addressed?
I believe Geno uses boku (僕) which is typical for youthful male characters
...having said that though I’d probably be ever so slightly happier with a young late teen male voice that slightly overdoes a cool pitch (so low alto/high tenor as a frame of reference)
You can’t tell me ‘Hey Smithy!’ wouldn’t sound infinitely more memorable with a slightly lower pitched cool inflection though with the young star spirit’s voice almost cracking beneath it

I'm probably in denial just a bit, but I think Doomguy and Dovakin are in a Steve and Banjo situation and there's really no telling who's getting in over who until the reveal.

How interesting! Definitively makes sense with what we know of Geno and is certainly an indicator of the sort of character they wanted to make.

I'm glad it's getting brought up because the Steve to dovakiin comparisons really are quite uncanny. I'm dont believe outright its bunk if fatman is going to stand by it so strongly but I know which I'm going to be hoping shows up.

I am going to wait and see on this. I can't say I can make a clear judgment on this, as Doomguy is one of my most wanted(3rd to be specific) and I would naturally lean on him getting in, but the nature of Bethesda and Skyrim does make me wonder about it. It's not like we will have to wait long to see how this will all play out, considering all the signs of a Direct.

Welp, I don't think I'm ready to full-on return to being active the thread just yet. I spent so long without taking a look at it that I'll probably gonna need a little longer to get used to it again. So excuse me if I go back to my old role as a lurker for the next couple days or so. Heh...

Imagine character 5 announced and released right after a direct with a Sakurai presentation
You know, that could be another explanation beyond no Smash reveal at TGA. If they wanted to do a shadowdrop of sorts, you can't have a Sakurai presentation right after TGA.

Right now I'm thinking we'll get the announcement on Monday and get the direct on the 8th. We'll see 5 at the start or early on and it will be one of the Bethesda boys. Then we'll at least get one more near the end and get more info on the nature of season 2. A 3rd like fatman is calling for is possible but im not going to expect it and just see what happens. Really hoping that golden sun switch shows up especially if wah is real then Isaac has all his barriers removed and will likely bounce back in a major way. Best of all I expect just about any scenario we get to basically confirm what we've been theorizing and geno will show up at some point if not then. We're in the endgame now yall

..Do you think that Sakurai would sit down and talk about Geno/whoever else gets revealed next the way he did for Banjo/Terry? To my understanding, that sort of presentation was the result of being low on funds, or something.

Probably. Beyond the matter of budget, at this point I think people have grown to really like this style of presentation. There's something about seeing Sakurai's passion in those presentation that make them great to watch.

To be honest i didn't care if they did it that way because they were low on budget or something like that, it was awesome hearing Sakurai talk that much about a character that he likes. and if we get Geno then imagine him talking about how he finally made it into the roster that would be great

Mad mode Sakurai could possibly do this, but the closest we’ve gotten to this scenario was E3 2015 with Ryu (if he didn’t leak ofc)
Funnily enough if this eventuates it’d probably suit a higher profile character better than a less prominent one who’d probably earn a presentation at a later date

Worth considering, since we do know Sakurai and his team are ahead of schedule and it's getting down to the wire time wise, so they could pull this off. Not betting on it, but it would be pretty hype.

I’m almost certain Sakurai was joking about the budget thing. They probably just prefer to do showcases in this style, might be faster and easier to produce in comparison to a high quality production like Joker’s video was.
(But if he wasn’t, Nintendo should really step in and help the man... isn’t Smash like the best selling fighting game of all time?)

To add to both of these, Sakurai has a way with being a very approachable game history nerd/buff and at least conveys himself rather humbly (though that might be a byproduct of Japanese custom). Plus clever gags in the script and honestly these presentations give him a chance to geek out and fanboy like a lot of us making him super relatable.
I’d miss these Sakurai Presents if later DLC don’t get the same showcase tbh

I think I recall an article about the matter of budget where it was pretty much said he was not joking about the budget for presentations. I can't recall exactly what though.

Yeah, I think that really began to shine in the Banjo & Kazooie and especially the Terry presentations. I mean, the former had Sakurai promote the Xbox One and the latter was just a huge geek fest over one of his favorite fighting game series. They are great.

Out of curiosity, has there ever been a Nintendo Direct announced on a Weekend? Either way, it shouldn’t be much longer

I think so. I remember some Directs being announced on Sundays.

no, if there is one this week expect it to be announced Monday or Tuesday, at the absolute latest Wednesday morning if it's on Thursday.

If the Direct is happening Monday, then it has to be announced sometime tomorrow morning, or in the afternoon EST at the absolute latest.

However, I do not believe it is going to be Monday, for the sole reason that we kind of know/have a reasonable idea that the next full-numbered Switch update is coming. If they're doing three whole days worth of maintenance, then this update must be pretty substantial, and so the Direct cannot be on Monday because they would need at least a day of the maintenance to adequately prepare for whatever the Direct is going to reveal about said Switch update, on top of whatever is also happening with Smash, Splatoon 2, and otherwise.

It still could technically be on Monday, true, but I think they'd rather say, for example, on Tuesday "the next Switch update comes out tomorrow" rather than on Monday say "the next Switch update comes out in two days". But that's just me and my theory, ofc

I feel like linking this because it may be worth looking at for us Geno fans, being he is so linked to Square. May be one more indication towards a Direct, but like the tweet says, this could be wrong.

Edit:
Don't know the chances of a TWENY character in Smash, but I don't think this is Smash related. Just something to do with the series. Some people are apparently considering an anime adaptation.
KingZell teased The World Ends With You 2 two months ago and the remake for the game on Switch literally teased a sequel, so I think it is for that.

It's not really a direct, but I remember them announcing Hero's presentation on a Sunday night, so it's not unheard of for Nintendo to announce things on the weekend. That said, main directs usually seem to be on Tuesday or Wednesday, so that's probably when it'll be.

June 1st 2015 was a Direct on a Monday...it could happen, but not likely.

EDIT: Was just curious if we ever got one on a Friday.
