It's still a weird choice in general when they could have used either Peach or Luigi. But it could have been as simple as "Daisy and Plant were newcomers in Ultimate. Lets just use them"

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the latter. Those are the new Mario characters (of course) which makes sense with the balance thing Push is saying.

Oh don't get me wrong, I LIVE for this crap. No other game can ever provide a ride like this.

I'm just mentally exhausted since again, we've gone through what feels like three days of speculation in ONE day: Sora may or may not be out of the running, Smash reveal being at the game awards at all being called into question, and now we're trying to decipher the meaning of Daisy. All this in like five hours

This kind of insane theorycrafting is exactly what makes speculation fun though. A thousand times more interesting than just waiting for insiders to say who isnt in.

I do have to ask. Has Sakurai or Nintendo ever hinted at a newcomer before their announcement? I swear they always just kinda dropped them.

The only thing that could be construed as a hint was Sakurai apologizing for red eyes the day before the Direct and then it turned out K. Rool and Bloody Tears were in Smash, but even then it's a reach

Paraphrasing here but: "Planning begun around E3 time to do something related to Smash at the game awards since the timeline synced up but I didn't know about Joker until 1-2 weeks before hand and I was the only one out of the video game awards team to know hence keeping it such a secret" -Geoff

So that's probably why nobody knew about Joker being announced beforehand as even insiders were bamboozled so if #5 is revealed at the game awards I wouldn't be surprised if only Geoff knew again hence why Sabi hasn't heard anything about a game awards announcement (yet). Interesting.

I'm guessing that it will slow down once the Game Awards air next Thursday, or once it surpasses the Smash 4 Ridley thread in terms of page count.

I imagine it will be after TGA. I don't think we are speeding up in posts just because of that goal.

I don't think so. I think Sakurai sometimes retweets announcements for big events like E3, which could hint at when a newcomer could be announced, but I don't think he's ever hinted at who the newcomer could be.
