It’s really hard for me to think of an exact voice for geno... there’s a couple that I think could work...mostly from xc and xc2

The one who voiced addam in torna, seems a pretty good fit. Has the voice of a noble wise character, who also happens to have a light hearted sense of humor. Would fit geno well imo.

The guy who did dunban in xc1. Same reason as above though he has a little less humor and is more serious.

The guy who voiced zeke in xenoblade2. I know most are like “whaaaaaaat? Zeke is a goofball and comic relief” and you’d be right, However there’s moments in the game when zeke acts like a serious adult, and in those moments his VA does sound like a good fit for geno.

Also this is just my blatant bias here showing since I’ve been playing the game a lot lately, but the va for the male sole survivor from fallout4 could also probably work.

Idk too many va’s for games unfortunately since I in the games I usually play, i either don’t pay attention to em, they are in japanese, they don’t have va work at all(most) or they’re so forgettable that I just don’t remember em.


One thing i do feel his voice should have however, is some sort of filter that maybe has a sort of “echo” to it, to drive the point home that the doll itself is just a shell that star spirit geno is controlling.

His laughing sprite actually goes pretty wide with his mouth, whereas his angry sprite actually shows white around his mouth that does not belong to his eyes, implicating angry anime fangs?? It's really weird, but it's also pretty cute rofl.

Then again, it is pretty hard to tell when the sprites are so gotdang tiny.

the mouth has perfect angles so I imagine the artist just tooks some small if any liberties with the width. The eye is definitely off model but exaggerated features for high emotional states is probably the biggest eastern cliche ever so it doesn't surprise me.

Geno's mouth always has the wood lining attached to it, but he definitely has a nice range of emotions. He's magic, so I don't think it's far-fetched.

The only thing I don't like about Legacy XP: Geno lacks them.

Because of SMRPG's tiny sprites, I spent a lot of time thinking Mallow was perfectly round, like a Kirby with pants and hair.

Yeah he can be perfectly expressive so I'm not the least bit worried there. Honestly it's not like I have a probelm with him having a voice (he has a ton of lines in game after all) it's just that the artists at square did not design him with voice acting in mind at all. Now to be fair it's not like they were supposed to and due to limited animation and text boxes you would never know the difference. In the 3d age though unless you do a total redesign(plastic maybe?) which will probably go over about as well as a root canal, your stuck with either a stiff nutcracker motion or giving him a real mouth and risking it look like a spongebob closeup.

After what happened last year, I think I've been switching over to the mindset that even if a character I legitimately dislike gets in, that character is going to make someone happy, and that's worth something. And if Geno gets in, it doesn't really matter to me who else gets in with him, y'know? Everyone being able to celebrate together is the ideal ending for Ultimate, in my opinion.

Thank you for this mindset. I truly do appreciate people like you. Especially because I'm one of them.

I've said it before, but for the people who don't know, I ain't a Geno a fan (nothing against the guy, just have no personal connection to him). But you guys have waited for your wooden puppet for so long, and I want you guys to have your dream come true. I've been lurking and commenting here for over a month now I think, and while some people in this thread irritate me... as a whole I'm glad to be here. Some really good people in here who I'll be immensely satisfied for if Geno gets in.

Do I have characters I want in still? Yeah, I do. But honestly, as I've said before, I'm so content with the roster that I just want the most wanted characters (especially ones who have been requested for a while) to get in. I am praying for you all, but I don't think that's necessary since I objectively think Geno is one of the frontrunners for DLC.

But, I will say this... guys, if Geno doesn't get in or is a Mii costume or whatever, please be civil, okay? I know what it is like to have a character seem likely and they just don't happen (Shadow the Hedgehog fan here), but you just should try to remember all that Sakurai does for us. Yeah, it sucks some characters are Assist Trophies, yeah the roster isn't perfect, but this man... has gone to work with carpel tunnel and a fricken IV to make US happy. Not Nintendo guys. Nintendo would never expect Sakurai to go to work with those aforementioned conditions. Sakurai does it for US. Yes, of course some people are left out in the cold a little (sorry Isaac fans), but think about how big an undertaking Smash is? Over 100 stages, over 80 flippin' characters, every character returning, so many requested characters like Inkling, Daisy, Ridley, the Belmonts, Chrom, Dark Samus, King K. Rool, Isabelle, Banjo & Kazooie, and probably a few more!

I know most of you know this, but I just think it is important to step back (even if your favorite characters don't get in), and be grateful for all Sakurai and his team has done (I don't say that to be condescending, I say it as someone who knows what it is like to have hopes, though unfortunately not get all of them in the end). I just don't want people to be bitter towards Sakurai and question his intentions (like some people in this thread). I have had characters of mine shot down, as I said. But I moved on and don't hold any grudge. And I hope people can do the same, no matter the character (can't stand people who think Sakurai holds contempt towards us and/or certain characters like Waluigi or any character that got "left out"). I believe in Geno's chances, and I'll be in here celebrating or "mourning" his fate with you guys whenever we know for sure. Keep on keeping on guys, stay civil no matter what happens.

P.S.: As I said, I have no connection to Geno. However, I do have an SNES Classic that I've been waiting to play Super Mario RPG on! I'm waiting to see what awaits his fate (whether playable or not) to play! I am anxious to find out what the praise regarding this Legend about Seven Stars is all about!

Oh god do I know this feeling, huge SA2 fan here. It's literally my favorite modern Sonic game and I freaking love Shadow to bits. I really thought he was a lock. At least we can enjoy him outside of Smash, aye? :') Lesson learned: NO CHARACTER is a lock. Ever. They're only in when Sakurai says they're in.

Whether or not Geno gets in, I don't mind whoever gets into the roster. Anyone will appeal to fans somewhere, and that's A-OK by me. It may even introduce me to more series, so I'm chill with that. More people are seeing Terry, after all, and Joker was the push I needed to dive deep into Persona 5 (I love Persona, but never checked out 5 until Joker's reveal). More people are appreciating DQ and, as biased as it is for me to say this, MORE PEOPLE ARE SEEING WHAT THERE IS TO LOVE ABOUT BANJO AND KAZOOIE. MY HEART SINGS FOR THAT.

If Geno doesn't make it, I'll keep him alive in any fan content I can make. I promise this. If he does make it, then... well, I'll still do it anyway. Boy, that was a useless statement, wasn't it...?

That might just be worse tbh. Giving him a real dynamic mouth would look so jarring juxtaposed against everything else. So many characters on the roster don't talk so why does he need to?

I dont think he’d necessarilly need a super expressive mouth to be able to talk. He is a celestial beings of sorts and can speak without even needing a body if i remember correctly. Though speaking with no movements may be a little too jarring

As per usual, love what ya got say here Ms. Positive Vibes (sorry if you don't like that nickname I've been calling you lately lol)!

Regarding Shadow, yeah, I was particularly devastated when he got shown off as an Assist Trophy and made me realize too that no character is ever a lock (except maybe Inkling for Ultimate). I do wonder why Sakurai showed Knuckles early and saved Shadow until the very end, as I just said above, I hold no grudge and know that Sakurai meant no ill will. A little tone deaf? Maybe, but he's a human who is allowed to make mistakes when he is considering a billion characters from all across the video game industry.

Also, totally back you up on getting introduced to new series. I LOVE that about Smash. Yeah, I have characters I want from franchises I know, but there are so many franchises that dedicated Nintendo fans don't know about! It makes me so happy to see Dragon Quest (a series I had heard about, bit never really cared to learn about) getting more popular here in the west once I learned of its impact! Like I had no idea who Terry was, but after learning about his series' impact on Smash and his history... I'm glad he's in! Not every character can be a juggernaut like Sora or Crash Bandicoot. It is good to put the spotlight on the smaller guys sometimes.


P.S.: Man, I want to play Persona 5 soooooo badly, as well as Persona 4 and 3 (yes I'm a "normie", but I don't care). Unfortunately, I only have Nintendo consoles. But I am saving up for a PS5 next holiday season and plan to play the OG Persona 5 and Royal on it right away. I know basically everything about Persona 5: its characters, story, music, gameplay, etc. I'm basically a fan but haven't played it... so I know I'm not a "true" fan. I'm just in love with everything about the game (its OST is one of my all time favorites alongside the Super Mario Galaxy series). *sigh* I'd love the OG Persona 5 to come to the Switch, and maybe it will... but after Sony recently said they value Persona sticking with them since the beginning, I doubt it.

Sorry for the inactivity, it was because of my keyboard that it doesn't work well lately. and on the argument that no character is guaranteed to be DLC I have to remind everyone that Banjo Kazooie was leaked by a source of Papa Genos before we even knew anything about the Fighters Pass so in reality there would be 2 ways to know if a character is a "lock" or not: by Nintendo itself or by someone with internal information such as Vergeben, Vr Plant, etc.

Same, though Hero being in actually pushed me towards playing the mainline Dragon Quest games and I became instantly hooked and are now some of my favorite JRPGs to play and I instantly became a fan after finishing DQXI’s main story. So that’s something I can thank Sakurai for.

One thing I think is very likely that we should keep in mind is the new mii list given to papa. If that comes true it not only backs up the previous mallow hat, but also the cacodemon by association and the crash leak from the same guy

I actually don't think that'd be good if Mallow and Cacodemon dropped with Terry. Mallow would likely drop with the Geno costume, if such is the case, and Cacodemon with no Doom Marine would essentially disconfirm him. I'd rather that not happen.

I promise no matter what to have a good mind set. It's the people like you in the smash community that bring everyone up. No matter if Geno gets shut down or in the game, its important to know Sakurai's dedication. Fan speculation has been known to get out of control so its always important to keep this in mind.

Something that does make me raise a brow is Fatman saying theres potentially mii costume that will be of Sans levels of hype and steal more thunder from Terry.

I'm partially curious and kind of nervous about it. I dont want any unwelcome revelations.

The thing for a lot of people, if Geno doesn't make it this time, is that he'll be buried and done. Honestly, given this has been his best chance to make it thus far, I can see why people would think that. Apart from a SMRPG remake or a Mario crossover game a la Sports Mix or Fortune Street, I'd not easily expect Geno's return either.

If Geno doesn't make it, though, while it does mean we'd likely have to bid farewell to our star boy in official media forever, he'll always live on with us. The fans don't need to wait on Nintendo or Square to make things happen. We can. As long as we do, Geno will always be alive. He'll always be ours in our own special ways, copyright be damned. I've crafted so much lore and so many quirks for my interpretation of Geno that he practically feels like MY character now. No one can take that away from me, and for your interpretations, your love, your experiences... no one can take those away either.

I'll be heartbroken if Geno doesn't make it. I really will be. However, he's never truly gone unless we say he is. He's always in our hearts and our wishes, y'know?
