If you believe baseless text posts from a year ago about some guys character wishlist then sure.It seems KOS-MOS from Xenosaga is the current rumor floating around for Fighter 5. If that's the case, then I'm on board with it.
Despite the fact that he isn't able to discuss the characters that aren't Ryu, Crash, and Geno, when Fatmanonice says that Reimu and KOS-MOS are /v/ trying to meme characters into existence, I consider that an implicit admission that the circles he's a part of haven't heard anything about them.It seems KOS-MOS from Xenosaga is the current rumor floating around for Fighter 5. If that's the case, then I'm on board with it.
Well to be fair, Doomguy and Lloyd haven't been discussed much if at all.Has anyone else noticed fatman hasnt commented much on Doomguy or Lloyd? At least from what I remember.
I’d beg to differ, Lloyd definitely has more weight recently because of the trademarks and the VA’s tweet, and Doomguy has been around and hasnt really had anything against him for over a yearWell to be fair, Doomguy and Lloyd haven't been discussed much if at all.
Doomguy's been talked about plenty, though not necessarily by Fatman, and Lloyd's sort of new to the broader speculation scene. Just because Fatman doesn't talk about a character doesn't mean they're one of the other characters making the rounds in leakerville, to me, but when he outright calls a character someone /v/ is trying to "will into existence" I take it to mean something.Has anyone else noticed fatman hasnt commented much on Doomguy or Lloyd? At least from what I remember.
I'm generally against laughing at people for disagreeing with me, but, depending on how much salt is created by the reveal, i might join in.We're all suddenly too good for a nice schadenfreude? We'll see how that holds up when Geno gets in and you're all having a laugh at the expense of his detractors with me.
Also I think Sabi mentioned Lloyd ITT a while backI’d beg to differ, Lloyd definitely has more weight recently because of the trademarks and the VA’s tweet, and Doomguy has been around and hasnt really had anything against him for over a year
I mean, didn't Sakurai say himself during Terry's reveal that he "wasn't too far along yet" or something to that effect? I can't remember exactly. And what did Sakurai say that implies that there's 100 or so people working on DLC? Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to know that we've got an army of devs kicking ass on the DLC, but last I heard, weren't they scraping for budget? With respect to the timeframe, I could see Terry being further along than Joker was at his reveal, and I'm not saying we WON'T see fighter #5 along with Terry's release, but I would say there's still a reasonable chance we may not.I'm not sure why people act like Terry wasn't far along in development. We got about as much gameplay footage of him as we would in a normal trailer, just without the situational humor. I think due to the nature of his trailer, they didn't want to show off that kind of trailer level gameplay in it. So far the only character we've seen who wasn't far along in development when they showed the trailer was Joker - and it took us four months to get him after announcement.
Even at the time of the Banjo presentation, I'm willing to bet Terry was done enough for them to be committing the lion's share of their resources to character pack 5, seeing as how Sakurai seems to imply that there's 100 or so people working on the DLC, and I can't wrap my head around more than 15 people being required to put the finishing touches on Banjo presentation Terry.
I know you’re joking, but there is a difference between wanting a character who happens to have detractors and wanting a character BECAUSE they have detractors. I don’t think anyone in this thread falls in the latterWe're all suddenly too good for a nice schadenfreude? We'll see how that holds up when Geno gets in and you're all having a laugh at the expense of his detractors with me.
As I've said before, I don't think the things Sakurai says in a direct or any other presentation should be taken as anything but the things that the "character" Sakurai is saying. not "too far along" can mean anything, and if his model is done, they've added voice lines, and the animations seem to check out, I'd say the only stuff left for them to do is balance the moves and make sure they don't crash the game somehow. That should be a bulk of the development imo, but not enough to hinder production on the next fighter.I mean, didn't Sakurai say himself during Terry's reveal that he "wasn't too far along yet" or something to that effect? I can't remember exactly.
Looks like I had a lapse in reading comprehension, he said "a few hundred jobs" in the last Famitsu column that Source Gaming translated. That's my bad. I don't know what their development cycle looks like, but even there, I have a hard time believing that one character has "a few hundred jobs" going on. I'm confident they're making more than one character at a time, and probably more than two.And what did Sakurai say that implies that there's 100 or so people working on DLC? Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to know that we've got an army of devs kicking *** on the DLC, but last I heard, weren't they scraping for budget? What’d she say? Also I think Sabi mentioned Lloyd ITT a while back
I sure as heck hope so. They can't roll them out fast enough as far I'm concerned. I WANT ME SOME GENO!I'm confident they're making more than one character at a time, and probably more than two.
it feels like this light novel is reaffirming the overwhelming opinion in this thread: that Geno should be in Super Smash Bros because he fills the only quota required: rule of cool.As a (human) white male (with a sweet beard) I may not be the best candidate to speak towards diversity, but I do want to note that some people are making some very compelling arguments and highlight this idea of merit being of far more value than gender/racial/sexual affiliation/etc diversity and, as usual, do so in the most annoyingly loquacious and round about way possible.
So let's face it, video game, movie/tv, etc icons even still today are predominantly white (human) males. I miss the days of icons like Crash, Spyro, and Rayman who, despite being male, weren't human and thus felt different and their goofy nature was an endearing and a compelling personality all of its own. But I'm going to focus more on human icons here as I discuss this subject because those are the icons that franchises seem to be focusing on moving forward in the video game industry in general.
I'm going to draw from my own personal experience here and make some real life analogies that don't necessarily equate to Smash but I hope kind of show what I'm getting at. Also, I can't speak for everyone as we all have different experiences (sometimes vastly so). So I have many different important females in my life: my mom, my sister, my grandmothers, aunts, girlfriend, and to a lesser degree coworkers, etc. I have many important males in my life: family members, friends, coworkers, etc. When I was in college, I had a good friend who happened to be homosexual. It's not like I went to college and said to myself "I'm going to go make friends with someone who is homosexual because I need to check off that box for my life". We had similar interests and were in many writing classes together and appreciated each other's creativity. My mom's best friend was married to a man who happened to be African American and we considered them my aunt and uncle. Regardless of what his race was, I would love my uncle because he was as close as family and because of his personality and how he showed he cared about me.
In every day life I interact with people of different genders, races, sexual affinities, etc on a regular basis. And I would hope that everyone has a similar opportunity in their every day life to have that kind of diversity because it is very good for your own personal growth to have such varied experiences around you. But the people who have impacted my life do so not because of their race or gender or what have you, but because of their merit whether that be life coaching, simply being a shoulder to lean on or an ear to vent to, having a personality that jives with mine, etc.
That's how I wish video games were. People don't have to be white or male to impact you or be a main character in your story or to be the protagonist themselves, yet video game world's are full to the brim with caucasian NPCs. Most female characters that do have the blessing of a cool personality are still completely oversexualized. Speaking to female characters specifically, a good bar to look at may be Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Some female characters in that anime are certainly oversexualized (although it admittedly makes some sense for the character Lust) but you'll notice that pretty much every single female character is a total bad*** and is very integral in the story and that's not because male characters aren't too, it's because the world and personality crafting in that anime are simply incredible. But more to my point, characters only have to be important and integral to their stories for reasons that at least mostly make sense in terms of the world they are in, have unique and defining traits to set them apart (as in "I can make things explode with my mind" and not "hey I'm female and thats it"), and have a design that suits their character and world, and of course hail from a game that is good and speaks to many in the video game market in order to become iconic.
It's all about merit. Everything else is extraneous icing on the cake. Tracer is a cool character and frankly would be just as cool if she were male or heterosexual or anything else under the sun and it's because of all the story they gave her not because of her gender or that she's a lesbian. So Smash seems to see characters for their merit (moveset potential, impact or status within gaming history, etc) not these extraneous features which is as it should be.
As a quick aside, I'd also like to point out that most content creators tend to make characters that speak to their own life experiences and preferences. That said, the majority of the gaming industry originates from Japan and the US where white/Asian males were the most prevalent demographic, hence why many of the classic video game icons reflect this. As the world's demographics/awareness evolve, so also does the content of media in general. As a (human) white male (with a sweet beard) I may not be the best candidate to speak towards diversity, but I do want to note that some people are making some very compelling arguments and highlight this idea of merit being of far more value than gender/racial/sexual affiliation/etc diversity and, as usual, do so in the most annoyingly loquacious and round about way possible.

generic anime girl: the AI with multiple personalities and guns from XenosagaLiterally who is kos mos?
Ah, exactly what the fans wanted. I'm sure Sakurai listened to what the Smash fans wanted and are giving them exactly what they wanted. Kos Mos has been requested for yeeeeaaars. Fo sho.generic anime girl: the AI with multiple personalities and guns from Xenosaga
Considering the amount of Fire Emblem, literal anime, Touhou, and JRPG characters I see requested... Yes, actually, Smash fans literally do want generic anime girls.Ah, exactly what the fans wanted. The blatant dumbing down of the character here is almost impressive. Just because you don't care doesn't make the character 'generic.'generic anime girl: the AI with multiple personalities and guns from Xenosaga
You had me drooling after 8 and 9 hit development.Regardless, they gave a definite timeline by saying that Terry was releasing in November. That means that by the time of Sakurai's footage that Terry, his stage and spirits would have to be pretty much done outside of slight tweaking or polishing in order for Nintendo to give a defined target date.
Odds are they are ahead of schedule as they announced Banjo for the fall and he came early September. Fighter 5 is most likely done, Fighter 6 and 7 are being worked on, fighter 8 and 9 are entering development, fighter 10 and 11 are in the preplanning stage, fighter 12 and 13 are entering licensing negotiations, fighter 14 and 15 are being spitballed for the first time and fighter 16 to 32 are being dreamed up by Sakurai right now.

ROFL Wow, the difference in comparisons here is freaking hilarious to me.KOS-MOS is the ultimate weapon against a race of seemingly invincible ghost-alien creatures. She is capable of utilizing the nanomachines inside her body to instantaneously construct any kind of weaponry, including guns, swords, shoulder-mounted cannons, drills, scythes, wings, basically anything. Her abilities and potential for moves are beyond impressive.

Just looked into it. It was a rumor back in December/January. Hitagi is involved tho which probably makes it way less credibleWhat’d she say?
I politely disavow this comment. People say the same thing about Geno dude. Let's not dumb our rebuttals down to the haters' level.Literally who is kos mos?
There are a lot of female characters I would like to see in Smash. But out of all of them, I really want Krystal and Dixie Kong. If I could just get those two, I wouldn't ask for any Nintendo characters in the roster ever again for all time.Wanting more ladies is perfectly reasonable. In a roster as beefy as this one, it certainly wouldn't hurt. Obviously it's not required (or even probable) for FP5 to be a girl.
Seeing outright pushback against the idea on sites like this one makes me want it more, too.
Let's be honest, no one would be screaming for a Dragon Quest protagonist and Terry if they weren't leaked. Japanese? They would probably be cheering for a Dragon Quest protagonist, but the west? Absolutely not had Hero never been leaked ahead of time and talked about on here for a year before being officially announced by Nintendo at E3.Considering the amount of Fire Emblem, literal anime, Touhou, and JRPG characters I see requested... Yes, actually, Smash fans literally do want generic anime girls.
Kos-Mos would be a great addition to Smash Bros. I wish I know more about her but the only experience I have of her were from Project X Zone and spending hours trying to get her in Xenoblade 2. We don't have that much character that are futuristic like Kos-Mos in Smash Bros; there's just Samus, Fox, and MegaMan that you can count as being futuristic, but even then they're not that much on the level like Kos-Mos is where she's creating these engery swords and beams and materializing stuff. Plus from what I can see of Kos-Mos and the stuff she creates definitely leads well to making an interesting moveset that just hasn't be in Smash Bros. That and seeing how she was the start of the Xeno series that went on to creating Xenoblade more than enough earns her some consideration. It's most likely not going to happen since she's own by Namco and for some reason Namco gets the short end of the stick despite help making the game. (Seriously, you've done something wrong if you only have one character in the game while Konami has three and Square has two.)The blatant dumbing down of the character here is almost impressive.
