I understand your viewpoint, but if a someone on a different site were doing this, with a history of half-baked info, they probably wouldn't be given the time of day here anymore. At least not until they clarified a bit more. I guess it's just lucky for fatman that this thread still cuts him this much slack (though it's not surprising).

But, I mean, if people are ok with hearing the grand revelation of "Nintendo is doing something", for some reason get their hopes up for Geno, and then inevitably have those hopes dashed... or really, do anything other than say "let us know when you hear more", well there's some questionable thought process at play, but all the power to them.

I can understand getting worked up when there's something tangible to work with, or additional info, but this is actually nothing... we don't even know what the picture is. Me personally, I think getting the fanbase spinning its wheels over nothing is, even with the best intentions, a bit... arch.

Keep in mind, people were getting mad when Vergeben wouldn't even narrow down the Pokemon character.

If I were doing this for a reputation I would probably be doing the works like Sabi has. She has her own Discord and Twitter. She has a buttload of connections and actively seeks people out. I don't. I could go all Laxchris or Blocked Content and make videos. I could make multiple accounts across multiple sites and be regularly active in them. I could do AMAs on Reddit. I could go on and on because the resources available nowadays are staggering. I don't exactly have a grand endgame aside from speculation.

Well yeah, Vergeben is an actual factual leaker who also constantly screws up. All fatman has said is "I saw a thing on discord" rather than insisting over the course of months that Minecraft would be in.

First off, you're being more disparaging towards yourself than you should be. And I will tell you, your name has reached beyond the confines of the Geno thread and has been used as the basis for conversations in the Social Thread, ResetEra, GameFAQs, etc. based upon the information you've provided in the past and people have developed expectations based on those comments, so you're at least a more important presence in the community than you realize. You've more or less begun to function as a pseudo leaker of your own even though your already getting the information second hand. Your "red carpet treatment for a character at E3" and "Salt Disappointment with Hero" comments have had real ramifications within the community, in addition to claim surrounding the original Square Seven and Geno from the NOA employee. I've seen that information spread and you've developed your own reputation with circles.

But after the last couple, the two I specifically highlighted, didn't really pan out and you've backtracked on them to certain degrees, people are questioning that reputation and integrity. And that sort of thing does reflect on us as you're one of the more notable presences within the thread since you're self described as operating from this thread primarily.

Yes, you just share things that you hear to talk about them... but you've also held information back that has sometimes muddied the conversation and this current information is a key example of what we're talking about. We can't really have a conversation with you about what you've learned unless you present us with the same information. Saying, "I know something, but I'm not going to tell you yet" is honestly pointless, and because you've been in contact with Sabi and frame it within the context of Sabi, people's expectations place more value on that something than should be established. It's just the vague promise of information that doesn't really lead anywhere productive for anybody until we actually know the information. I do respect you as a long time member of this thread, so please don't take this too harshly, but it's starting to feel like theatrics for the sake of theatrics when it would just be better to wait until you can present the information to the rest of us so we can then have our meaningful conversations about what you've brought to the table. And if you can't share stuff with us, then it's probably for the best to discuss it specifically within the context of Sabi's discord and people who can discuss it instead.

I know you're not trying to present yourself as a major leaker, but this has happened another time of where you've been the first source presenting information to the community, so you've adopted that role whether you've meant to or not. I'm just suggesting maybe re-examine how you present that information now that you're voice and comments can carry more weight than they probably used to. I enjoy your place as a longtime member of the thread, so please don't think I'm trying to push you out or anything of the sort, but this one behavior of yours has kind of not set super well with me for a while now to just be brutally honest.

I enjoy reading every one of your posts and your speculation is absolutely a blast to read. I also respect you for being a long time Geno supporter but I do think it would be a better idea to wait and get confirmation to post the info before saying you have some and that you can't get into it right then and there.

But that's just my opinion and I don't mean any disrespect by it I enjoy your posts but that's just a small flaw of yours.

If you're going to conflate what I said with an attack against you as a person, then if I agree I'm a ***** and if I go "no, don't worry about it", your self-pity wins out. I mean, textbook manipulation.

No, I'm just talking about the action of premature disclosure. Share what you want to share. You're fortunate this thread still eats it all up. But in my opinion it seems the opposite of constructive, and from what I've observed, it's gradually chipping away at your general credibility. It seems to me both issues could be resolved by just sitting on the info until something more tangible can be shared, but if goal is simply activity in this one thread instead of more widespread proactivity, you're doing fine.

His Banjo hints were a lot more straight forward. It would take me forever to look them up but I want to say one day he posted a picture of Halloween decoration of a witch and another later down the road where a bird and bear were in the same frame (we kind of made fun of him for that one). I think Sabi shared them on her Twitter.

Yeah, sure, he's jumped the gun in the past. But so what? That hardly evidences a pattern in my opinion, especially when you weigh that against the years of investment Fatman has poured into this community. It seems unfair to brand him the way some of you seem to be.

Moreover, we've all seen what the zero-tolerance leak culture has done to the Smash communities in other pockets of the internet...Why bring it in here? Leaks are fun points of discussion, not nuggets of gold to hang your soul on. Take them for what they are, not what you'd like them to be.

Literally you posted that info to produce "interesting conversation". And I didn't even say "productivity".

I did say activity vs. proactivity, which I assume is what you're talking about and, to me at least, is the difference between talking about how there's some picture out there of something, and having enough to go on to actually try and determine what it means. And you know as well as I that the Smash fanbase is almost always about the latter. Even when they don't have any info, they still try to determine what it means.

But now there is a picture, which is great. That's something, thanks. I mean, it's still a bit nebulous considering all it relates to is "Nintendo", but it's miles better than the actual nothing of before.

I think the Smash Ballot coming into the fold made the Smash community a lot more toxic. Had the Smash Ballot never been a thing, I believe things would be a lot more chiller in the speculation scene. Really, Sakurai has spoiled us too much.

So what if things don't end up the way they were "rumored"? It gave us the time to talk about it and have the days pass in conversation, not silence. The starling picture is a mysterious one at the moment, and we had no idea what the crab was until Link's Awakening was revealed. We might find out soon, we might not.

What really set the ball rolling was Vergeben. As soon as the leaks he had in the box theory days were proven right, people worshipped him like a soothsayer that can get nothing wrong, and if you ever dared to question anything he didn't mention himself or his history beyond Smash, you'd get lynched. Even worse when some associates followed him around like sycophants and tried to leak things themselves (remember Katalina?).

Although in fairness, when anything becomes more popular, the fandom can become uncontrollable. There's a reason why this is a thing. Heck, people were already salty in the Brawl days over a toy.
