Killer instinct has starters package that gives you one character by monthly rotation with all available modes, with options to purchase more characters. I wont go into package details but the 20 dollar one gives you all of season 1 characters. KI is not the first nor will be the last to implement this business strategy. DoA5 ultimate is doing this and even worst is charging you for other modes while KI doesn't

no mystery that KI was rushed, so some features was going to be left out at launch. Fortunate the primary modes was kept in and their is survival mode to substitute for arcade mode and their is even vs cpu mode so no arcade mode is no real lost.

hype is hype, their is no answer to that.

Now I want to bring people attention to very niche game that been out for a while now. But sadly it goes unnoticed by the FGC, its even very niche in japan. The game is called Phantom Breaker Extra. Its 2d anime theme fighter that sport roster of 20 character (16 original, 2 guest, 2 ex of existing characters)
Opening*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX5WwazTtHs

Its the third entry into the phantom breaker series. With the first being an xbox 360 exclusive back in 2011. Then their was beat em up spin off for the xbla called PB battle grounds. PB theme is like your typical animu fighter with having rooster mostly of female characters (13 )that fit in to anime archetype with only handful of male characters (5).

Phantom breaker can be compare to many other fighters since it heavily borrows stuff from tradional fighter like capcoms street fighter, Modern 3d fighters like namco's tekken, and even to the niche stuff like GG. But the thing that most niticable about phantom that it sport the button special commands like smash brows, where one has down, left, and right tilt special.
Tutorial* (pretty outdated as more tech has been found)

People are trying to defend a game being rushed with an awful business practice as they think it's okay and going to be a new thing? See....I cannot wrap my head around or fathom people being hype at all about it, especially people that have actually done research about it. At the risk of sounding like a jerk, it just boggles my mind.

I'm just correcting some poor presented information, if your upset about that than you have issue sir more deep rooted than KI.

It's just that dressing up a rushed and mediocre to "okay, but half-arsed" at best game, and the bad and just ridiculous business practices with the game, doesn't make either of them any better in actuality.

A couple of us here know a bit about PB, but I don't know if we are very interested in getting it since it's rarely mentioned here. There are other niche anime games like UNiB and DFC that have gotten our attention.

In my case there are just way too many fighters out there for my wallet to handle, and I'd rather get the ones I'm more familiar with.

One of my biggest problems with Killer Instinct for the XB1 is that it looks too much like Street Fighter IV. The old KI games were slick because they offered a noticeable difference to the cartoony Street Fighter II aesthetic.

Oh, a buddy of mine who works at Gamestop told me that Microsoft is already considering a price drop on the XB1 some time before Christmas to be more competitive against the PS4.

UNiB has no confirm release date as of now. We just know their is possible ps3 release.
DFC still in beta testing with no word on console release what so ever.

Yeah their really are alot of fighters. One of the reason I do enjoy PBE is because of its homogenize system and controls, which make it very approachable. while most of is stuff can appear shallow and linear, their is some depth to be explore with it.

Shame I'll never own an Xbone, because I'd love to give the new KI a try. I just recently found a copy of the original, and man, that's such a great, simple game.

Then again, Rare's different now. Hmm...

Well, to the surprise of no one, the KI3 reviews are in and of the ones I've seen, despite spending half the reviews talking about how it feels rushed, how there's no single player, or advanced training mode, the small roster size, and how many things are missing, the game still is pulling like 8.5s. *sigh* It's amazing what sticking a name on something can do to let developers get away with stuff, but...I suppose good on the 20 or so people that will actually like it without nostalgia goggles.

But who knows though, maybe in a year from now it will have turned into a semi-decent fighter once they're done with it or whatnot. I mean, I think I've kinda said my mind on it enough at the moment.

Everybody knows that Microsoft pays off the gaming press to write good things about their products. There's even a word for it, it's called "payola".

Yeah, but I was actually referencing SA's review of it. They've never been shy about bashing "Triple A" overhyped titles before, but it's just weirdly seemed that as soon as Killer Instinct was announced for the XBone, they've been continually praising it (though I will give them credit for pointing out the XB1's launch lineup is pretty bad, and having the most sarcastic unboxing video for the system ever), which seems kind of uncharacteristic of them. Especially since they've always seemed to be legit impartial and hated on people that get bought off to give good reviews.

The only thing I got to say about reviews are that a good chunk of them are bought out and if you don't like it, do video game reviews yourself on the internet and go from there. I did that back in 07 to mid 08 with a childhood friend of mine.

EDIT: Did anyone seen the changes in USF4 for the loketest in Japan? Some characters got nerfed and others got some mad buffs like Juri and Rose.

Yeah, I saw a bunch of the USF4 changes. Juri got mostly buffs (woo!), Sakura changes are pretty much "lol, what Sakura changes?" aside from a minor one that only really effects players that are too offensively minded, and M.Bison is essentially a list of nerfs.

And totally off topic, but as per your avatar, it made me remember Sting Chameleon is the biggest troll ever in Maverick Hunter X.

I heard that the netcode for Soul Calibur 2 online was a bit disappointing. Which is a real shame, since Tekken Tag 2 and Soul Calibur 5 have pretty good netcodes. I wonder why it isn't on the same level of quality. But at least all of the single-player content is still around. I don't have it though, I still have my Gamecube copy(though not my PS2 copy). If I did ever get it, I'd like to main Spawn myself. He's the only guest I haven't tried.

I've mostly heard good things when it came to KI3. I never played a game from that series, but I know some of the characters. And they look cool. I remember hearing that a season two was being made for it at some point. My guess is that most of the remaining KI1 cast is coming back. Namely T.J. Combo, Riptor and Cinder. I guess if it's another 6 being added to season two, the rest from KI2 will be added. Like Kim, Tusk and Maya.

Does anyone here play Skull Girls? I got it cheap during the steam fall sale and was just curious what you guys think of the game. I sadly won't have time to play it until finals are over.

Been following the game for a while (like one year before its release), and a big fan of it.
Hopefully I can buy it on Steam next week.

I'm not impressed with any of the video footage I've seen so far of the new Killer Instinct on Xbox One. Too few characters and more style than substance is the way I see it.

Granted, I might be prejudiced because I hate everything about the XB1 and I'm a huge fan of Killer Instinct Gold on the Nintendo 64. It's for this reason that I've been advocating for Microsoft to release Killer Instinct 2 HD Remix for both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 with cross-console on-line play. Such a release via XBLA would amortize the cost of the effort across the unpopular XB1 and the console that everybody already owns - the Xbox 360.

While some may argue that Killer Instinct 2/G is too dated, I believe anyone who watches this video of high-level play will think otherwise.

i wish the netcode for soul calibur 2 was just disappointing, it's god awful to the point where it's almost unplayable. you're not even playing soul calibur anymore, the input delay is so bad you might as well make a sandwich inbetween the button press and the response. seriously, how could they **** it up this bad after the godsend of netcode they gave us with soul calibur 5 and TTT2.

not going to lie, when you see a massive combo on KI, i get hyped

Did anyone hear about Konami taking Skullgirls off both PSN and XLBA? So it looks like the game is going to be PC only. Maybe that's old news.

Yeah, I've heard of that. Really awful move on Konami's part, considering they tried to do this without telling Lab Zero anything.

Lab Zero has been working to keep it up though, they've said that if it does go down then it will go back up when the new build is approved.

On the bright side, it shouldn't be too long of a wait to have Squigly on consoles. I'll probably pick up the game again for a little while when that happens.

This is all I'm waiting for. Pretty much the one character that's really interested me in this game (even though I do like it)

I'm pretty excited for Squigly, she's one of the few playable character designs I like, though I do have Ms. Fortune as well.

However, I don't know how long she will keep me playing. I enjoy the game, but there's a lot of little things I don't care for, and I know I'll just go back to Arcsys games after a while.
Hopefully the changes can keep me playing casually. Some of it looks nice, but I haven't been paying too much attention to what's changing.

She's a walking blood bank with those knockers.

I enjoy Skullgirls' design, but hardly any of the characters could really interest me as the playstyles mostly didn't click. I'm curious with the new characters though.

I suggest you actually play the new one before commenting. Simply because everyone who has says the exact total opposite of what you just said, there. Don't let your bias be your guide, sir.

I hear support for the new Killer Instinct is already dying off. That's to be expected as you gotta pony up an additional $200 for a proper fight stick to really play the game to its fullest.

You heard wrong.

And like all new games on new hardware, it takes time for everything to get settled. For new peripherals to get into people's hands. Or do you think arcade sticks just rain out the sky, or something during EVO?

It would have been nice if the Xbox One allowed owners to use their Xbox 360 fight sticks.

So you're saying that the new Killer Instinct has a thriving scene, Silpheed? If so that's in stark contrast to what others are saying because all I hear is how the game is tedious because of all the Jagos on-line. It's even worse than Ken and Ryus in Street Fighter IV. :(

The scene is growing. As more people get their hands on it, and as more content (which has already been promised) comes out, it will grow. A month in is way too ridiculously short of a time to write a game on a new platform of this nature off.

Games like Killer Instinct also tend to promote rage-quitting which is another big issue I've been hearing about in the on-line scene. Guess some people get butthurt when they're the hapless victim of a super long combo.

Full Discloser: I hate the Xbox One because Microsoft was complicit in the NSA's unconstitutional domestic spying programs. The company could, however, regain my trust by closing all backdoors they've built for the NSA in their operating systems, software, applications and hardware.
