I wouldn't put so much blame on the developers as much as I would the FGC. I think the community has a sheep like mentality at times with games. They feel the need to be in the loop with every new game that comes out so they play it for a while only to go onto the next one when they should just play the games they like and not worry about being in the loop for this or that game. Thankfully, I realized this after KOF. I mean, I can still watch KOF matches without playing it after all, same with Marvel.
Oh I agree for sure. KOFXIII is a game I have so much respect for and I don't think it was until Fall 2011 that I really truly started to understand how committed its community was and what they were capable of. I mean, that's a community that has been growing not only since 1994, but since 1992 and 1993 when it was Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting. I could watch KOFXIII matches all day, but I know enough about the game to know that as much fun as I have the times I play it, it's NOT the game for me and likely never will be.
Granted I could watch Marvel matches and Tekken Tag 2 matches for a while too, but I've never felt the urge to pick up Marvel, and Tekken Tag is the new thing. With stuff like AE though, it depends on the people playing and stuff because really, there are times when I can watch Alpha 3 and CVS2 matches more than AE matches.
I will agree there's a bit of a sheep mentality in that people will want to play what gets put at EVO and what the "top players play". It's relatively hard for a game to get a scene going, especially if it has the unfair stigma of being an "anime game" (Montreal actually uses the term "Air Dashers" to refer to them instead), which the Street Fighter and Marvel elitists will shun. People don't want to be in that group that's shunned or 'looked down on', and people become afraid of being the only person playing a certain game. While I've off and on come to have close experiences with that due to my recent getting into AE, that's never going to be my main game over say, Blazblue. I've just always felt being open and having a couple of different games to be fine.
Or...it could just be my "Why do we think we need to hate a game? I don't see the point." mindset. I mean hell, I'd be hard pressed to even name a fighting game that I've ever flat out hated.
