Honestly, when Greninja got revealed, for me it severely cut Mewtwo's chances, but not to 0%. I still have hope that Mewtwo is still in there, being pushed back either as a unlockable character or an E3 reveal, but I don't think there would be six Pokemon reps in here again. Unless Jigglypuff for whatever reason got cut.

As cool as Greninja looks I still want Mewtwo.

Guys, I feel as though the standalone charizard helps mewtwo out because in brawl the pokemon reps were pikachu, jiggs, squirtle, ivysaur, charizard, and lucario. Thats 6 reps. Now we have pikachu, charizard, greninja, and lucario. Assuming that ivysaur and squirtle get cut and jiggs returns. That is five pokemon reps leaving one spot left for mewtwo he still has high chances and I think they may milk the mega evolutions feature

Honestly, 6 is the perfect amount of reps for the Pokemon series. How many Pokemon can you have on your team at a time? 6.

I know 6 is perfect it seems people are jumping to conclusions that brawl had 4 pokemon characters and not 6

(Ps I am 100% the mega evolutions are final smashes now because it hit me)

If you guys are saying lucarios new down special is his mega evolve how from the direct confirmed lucario side b is the same and so is down up and normal specials so how can mega evolution be a special move if all special moves are confirmed

Well M2 didn't appear during the legendary showcase, or during the Pokemon flash screen, so there is nothing decomfirming him so far.

This, along with Sakurai's tight lipped "we're thinking about it" attitude towards him, makes me think M2 has something bigger in store for him.

Also, seeing that both Mega Charizard X and Mega Lucario are both in the game, I have slight hope that Mega Mewtwo (Either of them would be nice, but I think MMY is going to make the cut due to it's bigger marketing) will be in it as well. Those 3 Mega Evolutions are among the most promoted of them, after all.

I've just got to vent this out
How many times do I have to go over this mewtwo is not dead for getting in smash 4

1 6 playable pokemon in brawl ssb4 has 4 so far squirtle and ivysaur are oviously kicked and greninja and mewtwo take there place (most likely anyway)

2 the mega forms are definatly final smashes but charizard and lucarios final smashes are not clones due to different moves

3 all of the evidence from the past

4 he's probably going to be saved for E3 since that's a far bigger event and that's the next 2 month opening thing

5 jigglypuff is more in danger than mewtwo despite her being in all 3 (rumor is that it was confirmed that jigglypuff was almost cut in brawl)

...So, can anyone possibly manage to convince me that Mewtwo will be in Smash 4? This whole Greninja thing is making me question everything I thought I knew... So, I'm all ears to a strong pro-Mewtwo argument. Not that I think anything will change my pessimistic mind now...

I can say this, if Mewtwo and Jigglypuff are coming back, that could erase any doubts about seeing a 6th Mario/Zelda rep.

I actually think the direct bodes well for Mewtwo. Brawl had 6 Pokemon, so we should be getting 6 Pokemon here.

Well, not being shown with the legendary montage is good news for a change. Mew was also spotted in the trailer.

I think Jigglypuff will be back for sure, and Mewtwo I am confident will be in it. I expect a Zelda newcomer. We have not really had one since Melee (Toon Link does not count). And Bowser Jr. or Paper Mario would make a lot of sense, whoever Sakurai picks.

How are the mega evolutions not clones? Did you even watch the Direct? When Sakurai was talking about Lucario's FS he stated that with Mega Lucario "all the normal attacks do max damage". At another point in the Direct, he even said "characters are going to stick to 1 moveset each", I mean come on, it's why Samus/Zamus and Zelda/Sheik were split up.

Also, based on the master-trolling that Sakurai has demonstrated with this Direct (Ridley's shadow which de-confirms him, Zero-Suit Samus "cut", the Pseudo-Palutena trophy, and the Greninja reveal that looked like Mewtwo to SO MANY PEOPLE) I'm pretty sure he's sending a fairly strong signal that Mewtwo just isn't happening. I mean, come on, he functions a lot like Lucario, and we now have 2 characters with Mega Evolutions... he just doesn't offer anything new anymore.

Even the Substitute in Sakurai's chair was a "secret" hint at Greninja. Seriously, go to the SSB4 website and look at the picture of Greninja using Substitute. Look at the faintly furry texture of it! Sakurai is a genius.

By the way, Original 12 vs some guy who was already cut once? Don't make me laugh.

If anything I like his chances better with the likes of Zoroark and Darkrai disconfirmed.

The only thing I got out of the Direct is that they'd use Mega Mewtwo Y for sure now, given that Charizard got Mega Charizard X.

Original 12 doesn't hold as much water as most like to believe. Jiggs was almost cut from Brawl... Granted, I don't doubt she'll be here cause 'Fairy-type" now that it's obvious that 6th gen is being promoted like crazy, with the likes of MegazardX, MegaLucario, and all these new Pokemon.

Mega Evolutions aren't even clones, they are just 'full power' characters with slight model changes. Sakurai said it was just Lucario with full aura.

I still believe we are getting boosts to 6 characters for the Mario, Zelda and Pokémon rosters. It would be odd to go a game without a Zelda newcomer.

The tongue as the tail and the three ball point fingers. . .With all the trolling throughout this direct, I don't think that the shadowed Greninja was anything but intentional. He wanted us to think it was Mewtwo.

And if he wanted us to think it was Mewtwo, is it anything but spitting in our faces if Mewtwo's not in the game? That's not a way to do business.

The Pokemon Company forced in the hideous physically impossible abomination that is Greninja as they always did, so he got it out of the way now. Mewtwo, the one people actually care about, is being saved for E3.

As other people have said, Mewtwo and Jigglypuff is still six characters, same as Brawl. Sakurai does not care about "slot" icons on the roster.

The more serious threat rather than just no other Pokemon is Serperior to complete the fire/water/grass trio. Lucario represents gen 4, so Torterra's out, and Sceptile is the least liked of his generation of his starters while Serperior is most popular and recent.

Serperior doesn't have limbs, no way this is happening.

This direct encouraged my support for Mewtwo, and I thought this would be the obvious reaction.

1. He was not included in any Pokeballs in the vast array of legendaries/normal pokemon shown. Mewtwo is one of the most famous legendaries and just outright pokemon to exist, why not include him?

2. Zoroark deconfirmed(arguably the best pkmn rivaling his spot).

3. Brawl had 6 Pokemon characters. That is without question. The only counter-point I see being made is that "three characters were one slot so therefore only 5 pkmn accepted max." That is incredibly faulty and weak to me. Let's examine the Zelda series. Zelda would be considered one character until this direct according to this logic. Now we have gained an "extra Zelda series character" according to this slot-logic, since Sheik has her own slot. It just isn't a good basis, and that shows that Sakurai views multiple-character slots as what they are; individual characters that so happen to be merged in one slot. A multiple-character slot = multiple, individual characters. It just seems obvious. Characters > Slots

However, I will make it harder for Mewtwo by yet and still using the "Mario series slot-logic."

So here's the worst, most-limited-yet-realistic scenario for Mewtwo:
1 - Pikachu - 2 - Lucario - 3 - Charizard - 4 - Greninja - 5 - Jigglypuff(debatable)....So that makes 5 characters, equal to Mario series(as of now)..but we had 6 in Brawl, MORE POKEMON CHARACTERS THAN THE MARO SERIES(or less, if you count DK and the like, which just further illustrates the arbitrarity of aligning Mario's slot # vs Pkmn's slot #) . Who's going to fill the last slot? A lone Squirtle or Ivy? Hell no. Zoroark is out of the question. Bowser Jr is still possible for a 6th Mario rep, so there's that. Sakurai implementing 6 Pokemon characters is not foreign to Smash, he's done it before and can and will do it again. Mario series got a slot boost, Zelda series got a slot "boost"(by Sheik), so Pokemon getting a 6th slot for Smash 4 really isn't reaching in the slightest. Ironically, 6 pkmn characters for Smash 4 is asking less of what the Mario series got, +1. This merely stays at a comfortable and fitting 6 Pokemon, perfect room for Mewtwo.

4. Mewtwo still hasn't been revealed/deconfirmed/hinted in any way yet. Not a ironclad argument, but still supports the notion of a big-deal announcement at E3 for a big-deal character. This is just present-day evidence that really seems to lean towards this notion. Sakurai already confirmed to us he knows there is big desire for Mewtwo, and therefore is aware of his inclusion in Smash 4. It's obvious he's going into the game, it's just a how at this point. He has way too much support to be totally ignored. Similar to, but better than Ridley's current state.

------
Let me address Sakurai's trifecta of Grass, Water, and Fire type Pokemon. This was a very nice way to represent the elements of the Pokemon series in Brawl and Sakurai obviously noticed because he implemented it. We have Fire(Charizard), Water(Greninja), but no Grass. So if Sakurai wants this again, and I assume it's quite an elephant in the pokemon room, adding a new grass type starter isn't far-fetched. So this seems to lean towards the idea of Sakurai being almost obligated to add at least 6 slots to Pokemon, based on a worst case scenario for Mewtwo(Jiggly's return, which may not happen).

So it would then be:
1 - Pikachu - 2 - Charizard - 3 - Greninja - 4 - Jigglypuff - 5 - Lucario - 6 - Grass pkmn (7 - Mewtwo)

This, believe it or not, would still be technically in line with the treatment of the Mario series. And this supports the notion of 6 pkmn slots in Smash 4, more slots than current-Mario. But we had 6 Pokemon characters before, so a +1(like Mario) would equal 7, perfect room for Mewtwo.

Obviously, if I'm wrong and he wants to do away with this trifecta-idea, then Mewtwo's chances are evermore improved because it's one less slot being filled, even though it really doesn't matter. I'm just using that as the strictest measures for Mewtwo. It seems to me, on all fronts, there is ample space and possibility for Mewtwo even with the most unkind scenarios I present.

There is no way Sakurai is a including a past-generation grass Pokémon third evolution starter lol I am sorry but that is just ridiculous

Fire/Water > Grass. End of story.

Even the Japanese developers realized this when they gave GREEN a Squirtle.

Sceptile would be the ONLY candidate with anything close to a shot, especially if they remade the third generation, which they probably will, but even then it still does not make sense over Mewtwo.

The most requested character for SSB4 and one of the most iconic legendaries, featured prominently in the latest Pokemon games and movie vs. a highly irrelevant and dated puffball Pokemon? His cut from SSBB was unjustified, and even Sakurai knows it. But Pokemon is a very popular franchise. If it sees 6 slots on the roster against Mario's 5, it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Unlike Ridley, Mewtwo's chances haven't dwindled. Why show off the most requested character on a random stream when you can save him as an E3 reveal before the launch of 3DS Smash?

Yeah, I am pretty confident Mewtwo will either be shown at E3 (probably alongside a third party character, most likely Pac-Man, and MAYBE Ridley if we are lucky) or will be kept secret until after the 3DS version is released.

Just to not get hopes up I'm going to stick with ridley deconfirmed until I. See a trailer with him in it as the spotlight character

Brawl didn't really have six Pokemon reps. It had four. Pokemon Trainer was very much a single entity, even if he took thrice the development time.

There's an important distinction to make between the number of characters and the number of roster slots a series takes up. I couldn't realistically see Pokemon going to six whole roster slots leaving Mario behind at only five. That seems oddly out of proportion to me.

You guys can deny it was 6 all you want but its 6 playable pokemon in brawl

Yes 4 pokemon slots but pokemon trainer is 3 in 1 so its 3 + 3 transformations are always considered seperate characters and that mechanic got executed at the direct yesterday best direct ever by the way

I can say this, if Mewtwo and Jigglypuff are coming back, that could erase any doubts about seeing a 6th Mario/Zelda rep.
So, Impa after all? :awesome:

Honestly, I was kinda bummed that when I saw a thin framed, Pokémon-like thing charging up an energy ball against Charizard wasn't Mewtwo but Greninja... But now I know, there is nothing to fear. Jigglypuff will most likely be in due how easy it is to program her. And Mewtwo is just so damn popular... It can't be that he's not in. If he's NOT in I'll be extremely upset.

My only hope for Mewtwo is that Sakurai used a normal Mega evolution and an exclusive X evolution, Sakurai might want to have the exclusive Y evolution as well.

He might want a Grass type to complete the type triangle so =S

Since Snake is most likely not returning, I'm counting on you Mewtwo!

I wish people would stop doom phrophising Snakes chances, there's no evedence that he's been cut so far.

It'd be interesting to see a grass type, if anything, chestnaught would have been my choice of starter. I hate frogs with a passion and he's the only gen 6 starter I like!

There's only 1 thing that will comence me that he failed to get again is that he's not in the final leaked roster which is probably going to happen a couple of days away for the 3ds version

(If squirtle survives jigglypuff is in more danger due to almost getting the boot in brawl)

Honestly, I can't really see a very good Grass-type for Smash if Ivysaur is not going to coming back.

Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Venusaur: With Ivysaur having been in Brawl already, it would probably be the best choice if a grass-type had to be included. But seeing that Charizard is solo this time, I asusme neither Ivysaur or Squirtle could be coming back as well. Having 8 Pokemon reps if Mewtwo was indeed in the game is a bit of an overshot. (Unless you decide to count Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Yoshi as Mario reps, which in that case there would be 8 Mario reps as well.)

Chickorita/Bayleef/Meganium: Would probably be similar to Ivysaur in quite a few ways, both body-wise and moveset-wise. I'm not expecting it to make it into the game, but if it did, I'm betting this Pokemon would play very similarly to Ivysaur.

Treeko/Grovyle/Sceptile: This Pokemon would probably play differently, as it's more upright body position and forelimbs could make this Pokemon be more unique rather than being comparable to Ivysaur. If there had a new grass-type Pokemon instead of Ivysaur, I'd go with either this or Chesnaught.

Turtwig/Grotle/Torterra: My second most unlikely choice. This Pokemon is even more similar to Ivysaur, despite Torterra at least being larger. I'm betting if it was added, it would play as a slightly larger Ivysaur.

Snivy/Servine/Serperior: My most unlikely choice. The unusual body shape of this Pokemon doesn't make it look suitable for Smash. It would need to have a pretty unique moveset to make up for it's lack of limbs.

Chespin/Quilladin/Chesnaught: Probably my best choice for a grass-type character for Smash besides Ivysaur. Sure, it might not be very likely considering that one of the Gen 6 starters is already in the game, but Chesnaught has enough attributes for it to be a reasonable grass-type for Smash. It's even Grass/Fighting tyoe as Chesnaught, and has some similarities to Bowser as well.

I apologize for not focusing on Mewtwo here, but I can't really think of a reasonable grass-type for Smash besides Chesnaught and maybe Sceptile.

Some more screenshots were revealed this morning and yesterday. Chestnaught was confirmed as a Pokeball Pokemon through one of these screenshots. Just thought I'd let you know it was confirmed. I'd really love to see Mewtwo back. Yami Yugi's voice actor as the voice with a few moveset tweaks to make him much less defensive and more offensive. E3. Fingers crossed.

And even then, are you really thinking that a grass type would get in before Jigglypuff? Let me put it this way, every Pokemon in this game is relevant to 6th gen at the moment.

Pikachu is the mascot, but it's also the first Pokemon to utter it's name and not just electric jibberish.

Lucario is the poster boy of mega evolution and plays a small role in X and Y's plot, being the "First Pokemon discovered to Mega-Evolve" and all.

Charizard is the Kanto starter and it's special in that it gets TWO Mega Evolutions for a starter.

Greninja is arguably the most popular of the Kalos starters.

That leaves ONE thing they haven't included into the playable cast outside of Mewtwo... the Fairy typing, which they promoted and raved about all the time. Jigglypuff was one of the first Pokemon to have Fairy typing shown and is a Smash staple.

I still think however Mewtwo has a very good chance of being in. Mewtwo is the first Legendary Pokemon to mega-evolve, and considering its role as a secret 'boss' again in X and Y, and its movie it got, along with all the hype built up around its Y form, I think Mewtwo will be in, but it will be alongside Jigglypuff.

I'd argue about that, considering that Mewtwo's Y Mega Evolution was revealed even before Mega Evolutions themselves were announced. Lucario still plays a big role in Mega Evolution though, as you said. Lucario is still Gen-6 relevant.

But moving on, I'm placing all bets that Mewtwo is a secret character. Sure, it could be revealed to generate more hype for Smash, but considering that Melee's Mewtwo was hidden, I think it's going to be up for the players to discover as well. Also, I don't think Jigglypuff would be the only unlockable Pokemon, having almost all of the Pokemon reps available at the start is pretty far fetched for me. (Though considering Rosalina is probably going to be a starter character as well, Mario would have 4 starting reps as well, 5 if Luigi turns out to be booted out of it's unlockable status.)

As far as who gets the 'poster boy' slot, I'd say it's a close tie between Lucario and Mewtwo. Yes, Mewtwo did it first, but one cannot deny Lucario's role in the whole Mega-Evolution mechanic.

The fact that Lucario is the very first Pokemon that the player gets to Mega-Evolve does slightly etch him out in my personal opinion, but that doesn't matter since Mewtwo's niche is not that he's a poster boy of Mega-Evolution, but a Legendary Pokemon that can Mega-Evolve, the first of his kind until the Latios/Latias mega stones come.

Mewtwo and Jigglypuff will co-exist in Smash 4, this much I am sure of, though I don't expect Mewtwo at E3.
