Because Popeye isn't that interesting all things considered especially when compared to characters like Goku or Spider-Man.
Popeye once invited a suicidal man to his birthday party... and then got angry and pulled a pistol and shot him dead himself before the day was done. “The Bitter End”. YOU KNOW! FOR THE KIDS!

He’s an interesting man alright

Marble Hornets? Wasn't that "Totally 100% OC not!Slenderman aka The Operator"?
Yes and no. It was treated like that at the time and is still legally treated that way. But that was because it took so many liberties with the character. Marble Hornets basically created Slendermans abilities. Teleportation, Loss of memory, Sickness from prolonged exposure, ect. ect.

As such, it’s seen as an entirely different legal franchise to my knowledge.

I mention them specifically in rights as not only did that team write the plot of Slender: The Arrival, but basically all the locations in Eight Pages are ripped from straight from MH. The tunnel, red tower thing, bathrooms, even the pages themselves are from Marble Hornets.

Its kinda funny how 2 dudes OC take on Slenderman basically became the definitive version of the character.

Ok we talking non-game characters?

Beavis and Butt-head in an Ice Climber duo with The Great Cornholio as the Final Smash and of course "Uhhh huh huh huh huh mmmhehehehehehehehehe" as one taunt and "COME to Butt-head" as another taunt

The reveal trailer has to be them sitting on the couch "Hey Butt-head... we're gonna be in Smash" "Uhh huh huh huh... you said Smash huh huh huh" (cue Beavis and Butt-head theme.)

ALSO... second non-game character AND the most important one:

Hulk Hogan with an evil Hollywood Hogan echo fighter
x.jpg

and this absolutely wonderful song

Best song YOU ever heard war har har!

And yes, "Pastamania" has to be one of his alts hahaha

"With PASTAMANIA... RUNNIN THROUGH MY BRAAAAAIN!"

"I'm gonna give Big Bubba a dose of some of my Hulkaroos up there, AND THEN I'M GONNA BODY SLAM HIM AGAIN!"

HAHAHAHAHAHA such LEGENDARY quotes there

Also yeah, he does have ties to Nintendo... not just with games on Nintendo systems... but he combined Hulkamania with POKEmania for the 10th Anniversary

Reference that for Hulk Hogan's reveal trailer. Pikachu never did pay for Hulk Hogan's lunch. "Is Pikachu buyin or NOT?"

Maybe its just because I'm not high level or anything, but I rarely have issues with Smash Online..now Super Mario Maker 2 online..oh god..
Its probably the competitive scene making up the most votes there.
Ultimate has like 10 frames of input lag online so whenever I play it feels like I’m playing a turn based RPG lmao.

The seventh lantern.
Is Ridley a joke to you?
(He got shrunken down for Smash.)
There would appear to be a 'reasonable' size range within which shrinking is feasible though. After all, would you like to see Earth shrunken to size as a stage? Would you not think that to be too large? On the other hand Ridley was diminished to perhaps one-third of his normal size. Imagine growing Bowser to three times his Smash Bros. size. That seems to be roughly Giga Bowser's size (thinking of Brawl).

Nintendo's online is bad across the board. Smash just feels especially bad, because a lot of button inputs are really precise and the game has a really jank buffering system, which makes the game feel even more unresponsive if there's even a little bit of lag.

I'd also take rollback over new characters. I'd even trade all DLC characters for it, and most of my most played are DLC characters.

I know that nobody here wants this to happen, but: If the last 2 FP characters ended up being characters that DIDN'T originate from a video game, then what chars would people here think they'd be? Just a fun game to play. I'll start: If we HAVE TO have 2 non-game chars, I'd think those would be Son Goku and Spongebob Squarepants.
Someone out of: Geralt, Darth Vader, Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine & Scrooge McDuck. All with movesets entirely derived from game appearances. I feel those are the non-gaming series that have left the biggest impact on gaming.

I’ve said this before but I’ve never understood the Goku stuff, even as a DragonBall fan. Same with Luffy & Naruto being in Smash Flash; maybe Smash fans just have the most basic tastes in anime lmao

Most DB games (& anime games in general) are only good if you’re a diehard fan of the series. Stuff like DuckTales, Spidey PS4, Marvel vs Capcom, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: Battlefront & the Batman: Arkham games are great games even if you’re not a diehard fan.

The Witcher is the most extreme case of that since that game sold 28 million copies & I assume the vast majority of those players don’t know about the books. I could honestly see Nintendo seriously considering Geralt since The Witcher 3 was pretty popular in Japan, but then throwing him out once they discovered he’s a book character lol

If James Bond were a game character, then maybe he would have been playable in Melee.
That was barely the reason he was discarded.

Note that he said "likeness of an actor". Now this is more licensing as an issue, since the character is still cartoony enough in the games, not entirely unlike Solid Snake. So it mostly refers to licensing, not, well, realistic person.

The next issue was the realistic guns. Brawl killed this with Snake. James Bond has multiple laser and explosive options. It would've worked fine in that regard. At most, no knife. But lots of gadgets.

James Bond's setting is admittedly a lot more realistic than Metal Gear is(which is meant to exaggerate the spy stuff to not just futuristic, but fairly unrealistic territories with psychic characters, and constant clones, etc). Does this matter? No way to tell. Most likely not, since Sakurai didn't mention the settings being an issue alone.

He speaks on licensing as well on its own merits, due to how much has to be licensed. Owners of the characters, the actor's likeness, anything from the books/movies adapted in could have other IP ownership.

For the most part, licensing would've made it unrealistic till Brawl at best. Time to implement the stuff also made it implausible. Him being third party as is was not the issue, but taking too long to license would be. Snake and Sonic were not denied due to third party, or Sonic never having an official Nintendo appearance, but simply because "we had no way to get them in on time", which also makes it notable because Sakurai asked for Sonic in Brawl(he got asked to add Snake into Brawl by Kojima, meaning it simply was in time). This is also something that should be noted, which is why the idea a character had to have a Nintendo appearance to not be a hard rule. Sakurai would've never even entertained Sonic if it was such an issue. He clearly entertained the idea because of being a gaming icon, regardless of Nintendo status. The fact he got into a GameCube game and other Nintendo games later is a mere coincidence to what made him worth adding. Of course, Nintendo themselves are another story and may have their own thoughts about what is important. They're a business after all and do care about competition.

I would love Godzilla as well but that...That is definitely a definition of "Too Big".
I look at it this way; if you scale him own to Bowser/Ridley size, does his body feel wonky? Cause that was a part of Ridley's issue. He's wonky and has a tail that was too damn long. They made an all new model to try and fix the issues, as he was hard to scale with some of his designs. Super Metroid's design, even in Melee, was still actually fairly big.

So imo, he's very doable. But the question is; would you really want to add a human-sized Godzilla? He's not like Ganon, who is only giant in like... two games(he's not giant in TP, though he's decently big. But the final form is actually not that big. It's not even that big in Smash, barely double Ganondorf's size). In OOT and WW, it's definitely giant. In the 2D games, he's usually about double Link's size(and that particular Link is usually a bit closer to Young Link's size, so semi-short). You could probably see Classic Ganon as about 10 feet, which is definitely not that big by any means.

Godzilla's thing is he's a kaiju fighting other kaiju. That doesn't mean he's not doable, but you also have to consider how you want to represent him. Should he be a playable boss like Master Hand is(or more like Giga Bowser would be, who the only thing he has is he can't be thrown but applies every single other thing you can for a playable character. He's just a regular clone of Bowser... who is pretty much a human-sized kaiju anyway). Though I think Bowser was based loosely on a specific separate kaiju, but I can't remember the turtle one that well. Gamera, I think?

It's easy for people to vote for better online when they don't know who the characters are.

Now go back and tell them to choose between Joker, Banjo, and the rest of the first pass or better online. Let's see where people stand.
You could give me Crash Bandicoot and Master Chief, my two most wanteds.

I'd still pick better online.

I'm more than willing to give up my most wanteds that would blow the internet wide open for better online. I don't care if my most wanteds have to sit out, or miss the boat forever, I just choose better online. Better online is better for the longterm health of the game, simple as that. Like, this isn't even a question I have to think about, I'd take better online over any character, no question.

Granted, I'm pretty certain that this scenario is 100% hypothetical and the chance of better online or a fp3 are absurdly low.

It's fortunate that I don't have to decide on these sorts of questions when both Nintendo and Bandai Namco are both never ever going to add rollback to any of their games...

ever.
Or hell, in the case of Nintendo, they outright made their online worse due to the recent patch.

Best fighting game 2019 btw

honestly, if the ONLY improvement to online is rollback, then it'd be a tough choice between that and characters. While I'm sure rollback would help, there are plenty of other issues I have with Ultimate's online outside of its performance. That and I generally have a good amount of matches that aren't noticeably laggy or laggy to the point I'm annoyed (maybe said matches are a tiny bit laggy, but as someone who isn't best of the best or whatever at the game I wouldn't notice this stuff as much).

now, if we are talking about fixing ALL of Ultimate onlines problems, so:

-rollback/less lag
-Garbage preferred rules replaced by For Fun/Glory
-GSP/elite smash are improved or just removed/replaced
-You don't get booted to the back of a queue if, heaven forbid, you want to change your character in an arena
-Instead of switching between tournaments with items and 1v1 no item tournaments, both options are just always available at all times. All themed events will also count for 1v1 no item tournaments (unless items are important to a theme)
-Squad strike is available online
-any other stuff I could be forgetting

than yeah, I'd easily take this over more characters.

Reference that for Hulk Hogan's reveal trailer. Pikachu never did pay for Hulk Hogan's lunch. "Is Pikachu buyin or NOT?"
And his entire moveset would just be him not doing jobs to any character. With maybe one of his taunts saying "this doesn't work for me brother." :p

I suppose..but I can hardly tell, personally..or it might be that I usually just assume I had a bad input lol..but I'd still rather have more characters than better online, personally, because the characters are the big draw to the game while I see online as a bit of a smaller mode.
I am surprised its bad with Namco being involved..but it is what it is..makes me wonder if rollback won't work with Smash for some reason.

This is where you went wrong. There's no reason Dixie or Impa should end up as Echoes. If they should've been Echoes, they would've been.

So since this is trending, I decided to what new Echo Fighters should be added in either a future fighter pass focusing on echo fighters or the next game. One rule: Only fighters that doesn't have an echo fighter yet. Here's mine.

The thing with Ridley is that he was at one point canonically Samus' height, which was in the NES game and Sakurai even said that he based the design of Ridley on that version.

As for non-gaming characters, Geralt of Rivia is the clear star in that category. The Witcher 3 has made a name out of itself and I'm sure there have been people out there who were surprised to find out that Witcher started as a novel. I would also like to mention James Bond due to the rumors of him being considered for Melee and the fact that Goldeneye on N64 was a revolutionary game and is still beloved and held in high regard today despite it not holding up very well.

I also would not mind Batman as the NES game that is simply called "Batman" is considered a gem for the system and the Arkham trilogy is often considered one of the best comic book game series in recent years and maybe of all time. As for Gundam, it would be nice to get some Dynasty Warriors Gundam music as that soundtrack is bangin. But above all, Lego Star Wars was the first game that I recall ever playing, so I would be delighted to see a Lego Star Wars character make it in.

But despite all that, yeah I'm still weary on including content from any of these series. Not just because it would dilute Smash's appeal, but also there are still a lot of Gaming icons that are not in Smash yet (Master Chief, Doomugy, Crash, Dragonborn, Gordon Freeman, etc.) and they definitely deserve to get in Smash before any of the above should even be considered.

Filling in the blank spots when the last two fighters show up.

:ultlink::ultyounglink:: Ocarina of Time Adult Link (Just Melee Link but in Ultimate)
:ultbowser:: Dry Bowser (He plays like Melee and Brawl Bowser with Giga Bowser's elemental effects)
:ultganondorf::ultfalcon:: Black Shadow (Brawl/Smash 4 Ganondorf while Ganondorf is reworked)
:ultgreninja:: Sceptile (Uses Leaf Blades instead of water swords for his regular attacks, Energy Ball for Neutral Special, Pursuit for Side Special and Leaf Storm for Up Special)

I can hardly believe that that many people would prefer rollback netcode over new characters..
I mean, at this point i would prefer literally anything over new Characters in Ultimate's case. The game is already fine with the roster, it's everything else that's more of the issue.

There's barely any modes to play as (All Star sucks now, World of Light kinda sucks, Boss Rush mode is locked behind Spehiroth's DLC) and The Online is dog****, what's the point of having a great roster if you can't play with most of them in a enjoyable manner? I spend most of the game's time with Versus and Squad Strike, Classic, and Spirit Mode, in those aspects Ultimate is my favorite Smash and Switch game by far, but you couldn't make me play online even with a gun poiting at my nutsack.

Just look at how People stopped talking about STEVE and Sephiroth in an exciting manner and have come BACK to talk about how **** the online is, there's now way around it here man, the Online SUCKS ass through a bendy straw, and is the BIGGEST, GLARING flaw that is hindering Ultimate the most. Sure's there's other issues like buffering and Balancing, but those are issues of standard fighting games, most recent fightings have Online that WORK.

That's practically it yes. Honestly, even the 11 frames - 5+ frames of online delay + the 6 frame input delay that's a thing even offline - (ca. 1/6 of a second combined) of minimum online lag in Smash is not going to be that noticeable on a low level. As long as it doesn't lagspike (which does happen way too often). So it's certainly still possible to avoid the common jank tactics.

It starts to get really noticeable when one has a good idea of which attacks are quick. Because suddenly those become unreactable online and you'd have to practically predict them. Climbhazzard is a good example here, since it's fast and has quite a lot of range (if you ever wonder why a lot of online Clouds spam that, well there's that). And even slower attacks like DORIYAH are way more difficult to react to.

It's easy for people to vote for better online when they don't know who the characters are.

Now go back and tell them to choose between Joker, Banjo, and the rest of the first pass or better online. Let's see where people stand.
Hey, I'd get rid of one of Cloud's pretty bad matchups (:ultjoker: ) so you know what I'm taking. Now I'm gonna Genkai wo Koeru the rest of the cast like Smash 4 is never going out of style.:4pacman:

(Honestly. I'm not entirely sure on either. It's a scenario where I'd really like both answer A and answer B.)
