I definitely think it’s weird that we haven’t seen a new company enter Smash since September/November 2019 (depending on if you count the reveal or release as them joining). We’ve had 5 characters since then & no new company yet. It’s not impossible to get a new one, but I’m beginning to doubt it at this point. At this point I honestly feel like, if we don't get Hayabusa, it's highly possible we don't bring any new companies into the mix at all with FP2.
I think the precedent set by the previous four characters implies that Nintendo is working with what's available and tying up loose ends more than they're worried about expanding the crossover in the same way they were back in FP1. It's pretty telling that we have three characters from series that were already in the base game, two characters from Nintendo themselves, and then Steve as the outlier who was discussed as far back as five years ago.
So I wouldn't be shocked if the final two keep up this trend in some way. Probably not in the "second chance" way that a lot of us were humoring just a couple weeks ago, but I'd say already having some footing within Smash is a major benefit to whoever is still in the race at this point (I've lost a lot of faith in Namco and Capcom so my perspective shifts dominantly toward Sega, Microsoft and another Nintendo character).
The only reason I consider Hayabusa a major exception is because of how Koei Tecmo is probably in some sort of talks with Nintendo every other day, it's be particularly easy to land that deal and they wouldn't really have to go out of their way for anything.
I agree with the Nintendo, Sega & Microsoft pool. Sega hasn’t had a Mii costume during this pass yet, which is a bit suspicious IMO.
I wouldn’t count out Square though. I had that theory about MS & them the other day. Square still has a bunch of notable characters left like 2B, Lara Croft, Crono & Neku. They also have the Japanese advantage too... well besides Lara.
