I still think the lack of Undertale spirits is suspicious but maybe that's just me and my crazy mind. Maybe the Sans costume was testing the waters and we'll get a full pack this round. Would kinda fit the "another chance" vibe as well.

While I think Frisk could potentially have the more interesting moveset. I absolutely would not say no to Papyrus.
That Spring Man part would have been a perfect way to add the guy as a fighter despite him already being an Assist Trophy.

You don’t think literally any Mii costume or character they could possibly add WOULDN’T make a lot of dough? Not sure why people are so fixated on the unrealistic idea that they’d add a playable Undertale character. Be appreciative that they even did the Mii costume in the first place

Hmmmm, even if it's not likely even with those circumstances, I wouldn't say "never." I'd say there'd be at least a 0.0000001% chance of that happening, even if it won't happen until 3 decades later.
Honestly? As much as I'd like it for the sheer shock value, I don't think SS has a shot. Especially not with the direction first party DLC has taken so far. TH, ARMS and XC2 weren't just recent games, they were recent games that Nintendo promoted the hell out of (even if they dropped the ball with ARMS post-release) and all of them did decently well at the very worst.
If Undertale was owned by a big company I'd agree, but It's nature as an india actually helps here. Instead of months of negotiations with another company, you just need Toby Fox (who is a big Smash fan) to say yes.
Some of the other Mii Costumes probably did well, but not "the main topic of discussion on the internet for a month" like Sans was. None of the other costumes drowned out the release of one character and the reveal of another.
