Honestly, if the next Smash game is a completely new game and not an Ultimate port, I really don't think they'd drop the roster down to Brawl numbers or close to that. I feel like at worst we'd see Smash 4 numbers again (its numbers including Smash 4 DLC); I could even see a bit more than that happening. (so, 60-something characters perhaps?)

Like yeah, with a brand new, non-port game, they likely wouldn't be able to bring EVERYONE back, but at the same time Nintendo is still pretty damn aware how much people value the rosters in Smash games, so they'd still probably want the overall Smash 6 roster to be a highish amount and wouldn't want to get THAT cut-heavy.

Yet everyone would be cranky and salty if Smash 6 doesn't bring back everyone.

EVERYONE IS HERE was Ultimate's thing. It's nice, but we'll have to move on eventually
Why?

I agree. Everyone returning is Ultimate's gimmick, leave the new Smash to bring something else to the table.
An all inclusive roster is not a "gimmick". It's not some promotional stunt to just be discarded after one game like Gigantamax Pokemon.

Then lets try a different tack:

If we were to get a stage pass like suggested before, what stages would you like to see? Could be from any represented or even unrepresented franchise, just have fun with some ideas.
Mercy Hospital (Left 4 Dead)
Blackrock Stadium (Twisted Metal)
Necropolis (DOOM)
The 9 Circles (Dante's Inferno)
Tetris (Tetris)
Castle Dedede (Kirby)
City Escape (Sonic)

I mean, it is a promotional stunt.

But given the choice, I'd prefer to keep it around tbh.

Regardless, even if the next Smash game does go full doomer route in regards to the roster-size, I'll always have Ultimate to fall back on.

To be fair, wasn't it said at some point that it probably wouldn't be done again? At least, not for a while anyway. I feel like not having a bigger roster for a future game could open up the possibility for more modes and such. Just some extra dev time where characters aren't the big focus, more or less.

I think it'd be nice to keep everyone obviously, but there's probably a lot of stuff going behind the curtain that may not easily allow every character to come back again. I think it's fair that there's eventual cuts. They could always return in a subsequent title or by other means.

I mean, if you read this topic alone, that's clearly not the case.

A lot, sure. It's a popular part of the specific game, and a good amount of players do not like cuts. But yeah, you can expect that generally no opinion has a hard consensus among everyone. I get what you mean, and it's a fair point, but exaggerating doesn't work that well when the topic shows a lot of "yes, some should be cut", making your statement have a less meaningful impact than it should.

Cuts are most definitely happening outside of a port, and Sakurai already made it clear getting everyone together again is extremely hard. Trying to get all the DLC at the same time? Even harder. He's working with tons of companies to re-license everything. Unless they intended a Deluxe version for the next system, which doesn't entirely work since they'd have to have this planned since 2015(which means they'd be licensing, say, Cloud for 2 separate games). Also consider this; a Deluxe version would mean they had a new System planned in 2015. The Switch isn't even close to over with, so that means they massively planned it out for something like 5 years in advance to port it over. Doesn't that sound honestly likely? No.

A port's not impossible, but they'll have to re-license a lot of stuff anyway, which is difficult to do. It's possible they could've figured this out later on, so maybe Pass 2 at most, since that was negotiated for quite a bit down the line, but Pass 1 was way too early for that to be realistic, and base game was significantly earlier too. This is also why I don't think a port has much of a chance. It's basically them having to re-pay for everything, which they'd be doing for a new game anyway(plus more new content, which a Deluxe version would have either way). ...That, and companies generally don't say yes to something that's not going to happen for over 5 years later if they don't have the actual details. Nintendo would need to show a concrete proof of concept at the very least to get anyone on board.

--------------------------

..."Everyone is here" isn't just a promotional stunt, it's actually a core part of Ultimate's overall message being sent. It's what makes the game outright special. So yes, it really is its "gimmick" too. Smash 64 was basically "cool Nintendo characters duking it out in a cartoony setting", Melee was "Nintendo All-Stars and more", Brawl pretty much strived on opening up to 3rd parties and increasing the story of the series, 4 was about customization, and Ultimate is "Everyone is Hero". Each game has its own particular gimmick and strategy behind it. Calling them promotional stunts is misleading since it's not the whole story. Smash is not a typical game with sequels. Each game stands out massively on its own with its own unique factors beyond the roster alone.

Besides, we know them trying to get everyone back again is extremely unlikely(and cited as such), making Ultimate's core thing that. It's again, not impossible, but there's a pretty low chance and this might be the only game other than Melee to have everyone return. It's a very distinct possibility, and let's keep in mind people did not expect Ultimate to return the entire cast either. So it's pretty important to the overall game, and a big message being sent. Besides, when Sakurai says it's nearly impossible to repeat, he's putting a lot of emphasis on it. I'd say with that in mind it's pretty clear the gimmick behind Ultimate. ...You could also consider 4's gimmick to have characters with tons of new mechanics as well, but eh. That's kind of tied into customization.

It's one thing do be like "I understand if it's not feasible to do this again." It's another thing to be like "having a complete roster was fun, I wonder what the next game will do instead" like it was Subspace Emissary or Smash Run or something.

It was an achievement. But one that, now achieved, should always at least TRY to be replicated. Not discarded as something that can now be ignored.

I like seeing everyone cutting Cloud out, when Cloud was/is the most popular and played Character in Smash, in online, and FF7's popularity just exploded once again thanks to the Remake, giving a insight about it to newer generation of players.

If a character Sakurai is gonna fight to get back. It's Cloud.

Is this true?

Actually I think I remember something about this, which said Cloud was most common, but Ganondorf was the most common in Elite Smash. I'm not sure on those details. they were from around when the game came out

Do those games market their character reveals as hard as Smash does?

Smash is arguably the one fighting game that goes the absolute hardest on its character reveals hands down, and this fanbase eats that **** up. Other games like Street Fighter, Tekken, MK, etc have reveals too sure, but on the same level of Smash? It's just that Smash is SO BIG, and its fanbase is soo ravenous over its characters that it's hard to really compare it to anything else.

Other fighting games have cuts all the time, and it's just 'the norm' if your favorite doesn't return. We got folks here who legit won't move onto the next installment if their favorite gets the axe, and a solid chunk of our fanbase is dedicated to a game that's over 15 years old now, we're the only game at EVO(RIP) that effectively had 2 spots unless they ran a side Street Fighter event.\

Character reveals in Smash are basically video game front page news worthy events, and "EVERYONE IS HERE" was a MAJOR selling point for Ultimate. It's not just a promotional stunt sure, but it's still one at the end of the day. The entire thing was an incredibly calculated move.

Cloud is also one of the harder characters to get. Other than maybe the Konami characters, I feel like it Nintendo goes through the effort of getting him and Sephiroth back they can probably get most of the others too.

If we’re getting roster cuts for some reason or other, I suspect the less significant first party characters will be the ones to go before the 3rd party ones given the direction Smash has been moving in with each new game.

Compared to most fighting games, characters are such an important part of Smash. When a new Tekken or Street Fighter drops, people want to know how the game is gonna work mechanically and what’s gonna set it apart from older titles. Every time there is a new Smash game, the question on nearly everyone’s minds is “who’s gonna get in?” Single player modes, stages, items, competitive balancing, and the like aren’t what’s grabbing everyone’s attention. It’s the biggest crossover in all of gaming. The characters are such an important aspect.

A hard reboot that focuses on gameplay and cuts back on the roster just doesn’t sound like the right move to me. Even when seemingly unimportant characters like Wolf or Lucas are cut, fans immediately beg for them to be added back. In my eyes, Ultimate is exactly what Smash is all about. Building upon its roster for years to come sounds like the way to go, even if it’s at the cost of additional content.

While we’re on this topic, I’d like to ask everyone - assuming future Smash installments cut no characters, what characters do you think are shoe ins for the next Smash title that likely missed their chance as ultimate dlc?

I agree. I'd honestly be surprised to see less than 40, and I think 60-70 characters returning wouldn't be unreasonable. Smash usually doesn't cut that many characters, so it'd probably just be the handful of redundant ones (Pichu, Young Link, Doc, though some of the echo fighters could probably have a good chance to return since they're easier to add), characters whose rights were difficult to get back, and maybe a few beyond that who got out-prioritized.

Yes. All fighting games do that now.
On the same level as Smash?

I don't doubt that they get reveal trailers sure, but compare Terry getting into Fighting Layer EX as opposed to Terry getting into Smash... which one causes more buzz?

Maybe for the DIE HARD FGC peeps it was EX, but for everyone else? It's no contest Smash.

Smash just dwarfs everything else in comparison.

Yeah, I think the characters are the major pull in Smash, so reducing that - even if focus would shift on technicality, modes and other things - would likely have an impact. I think it's perfectly fine to expect Ultimate being ported to a future console, it would still give some leeway to fix other stuff as well. Though even then re-licensing may have issues, so it does feel like Ultimate is "the" definitive Smash game... until proven otherwise lol.

Give me something weird like Dracovish, Sirfetch'd or Toxtricity.
Hear hear. I've been in this weird Sirfetch'd craze lately, he'd be an awesome addition. Anything besides the expected please.

It is THE primary way that fighting games are promoted, yes. Smash spends more money on them, yes. But character reveals still make up, like, 90% of fighting game trailers now.

I'm also not sure how this proves your insistence that "Everyone Is Here" is a promotional stunt when Smash does it, but not when other fighting games do it.

Without getting into stuff that could include characters in the pack, just general stage ideas.

Phendrana Drifts
Planet Aether from Prime 2
Casinopolis
Angel Island
Robot Museum from MM7/Mega Man and Bass
Air Man's Stage
Tetris
Dr.Mario
Bower's Castle
Rainbow Road
Ken's Third Strike Stage
Terry's usual Train Stage

That's not really the point I'm making tbh. I'm not asking if other games get trailers, they do obviously.

The question is: What's going to make more people drop everything that they're doing? Just the average joe, the everyman, the regular bloke.

Dante, Phoenix Wright, Lloyd Irving, and Shantae are the first few that come to mind. Personally, I'd like to see Isaac be promoted from Assist Trophy status, but I wouldn't expect him too hard.

Toad/Captain Toad and Waluigi. Most games add multiple Mario newcomers, and these two are definitely stand outs. Captain Toad was one of my biggest predictions for Ultimate’s base game. He still feels like the biggest Nintendo icon missing from Smash. And Waluigi’s fan demand is just absurd.

Also Octolings. There is a part of me that is still expecting an echo pass to drop, but if that never happens, then Octolings would be a lock for Smash 6. Splatoon is only gonna keep growing and the Octolings are such an obvious addition. Whether as an easy echo, or as a completely unique character.

Okay but WHY though? Again, how does the fact that more people care about Smash character reveals than, say, Tekken character reveals, make "Everyone Is Here" a promotional stunt for Smash Ultimate, but not Tekken Tag Tournament?

Especially since "Everyone Is Here" is all returning characters. There's no NEW characters in that aspect of the game. So that average joe new Smash trailer hype doesn't even apply.

Eggman!

Not impossible to get as one of our next two. His chances might not even be too bad, but I think he's kinda unlikely. He's been building good momentum in speculation, though, to the point that I feel he's slowly becoming the next K Rool/Ridley. I don't imagine the focus on adding villains will stop in the next game, either. Eggman's definitely the frontrunner in that department if you ask me.

Because it's as others have said, a big part of Smash IS the characters.

Look at the online reactions to "EVERYONE IS HERE" and tell me the reaction people had as soon as Snake came on screen, the words appeared, followed up by Pichu of all characters.

Yeah, they're OLD characters, but the thing that a majority of Smash fans like, especially the casual side of the fanbase, IS the characters, it's why in Smash 4, people clamored for Wolf and Snake back as DLC during the ballots, a factor which Sakurai even says was a big push for "EVERYONE IS HERE".

You bring back EVERY character, make a HUGE deal out of it, boom, profit. You literally just advertised and sold hype right there. Online influencers post their reactions of them freaking out, their massive subscriber base watch it, and it just goes from there.

EVERYONE IS HERE is one of the best marketing stunts that they ever came up with. The character that they chose to show it on was Snake, a character that people clamored for returning, and what character(s) do you see next? Jigglypuff..... and PICHU, a character NO ONE thought would ever come back.

No cuts? Doubt that, if the engine is different enough anyways.

I honestly don't like calling many characters "shoe-ins" There's nothing like Inkling that seems super obvious to me. But I guess the Astral Chain MC could have a solid chance, they have a flashy style to them at least.

Some newer Pokemon, depending on when the game drops.

A few secondary characters from third party series could pop up. We know Alucard was considered, and it wouldn't be too out there to add Chun-Li, Tails or Knuckles and MMX or Zero. Though I can easily see that as my own bias.

Waluigi, if his popularity is acknowledged.

Definitely a Splatoon character, be it Octoling or something else, assuming it won't happen for Ultimate's DLC. That series is such a phenomenon for Nintendo especially in Japan, I can't imagine it not getting a second character.

After that, maybe a new Pokemon or Ring Fit Trainer, if they wanna go the WFT route again.

It's actually pretty sad that only Xenoblade got a special treatment cause that series is not the only thing that fans pushed to be localized cause we have Last Story and Pandora's Tower who fall into obscurity which Xenoblade avoid, that maybe because MonolithSoft have work with Bamco and Enix before with their game gets a pretty decent score and Xeno series exist before Xenoblade which mean the audience already aware of it.
Honestly, its not really special treatment, its just the one that found an audience and the company behind it, MonolithSoft, of course, wanted to continue the series while Mistwalker and Gambarian didn't seem to want to continue those games as series. There's also the fact that Operation Rainfall had Xenoblade Chronicles as its primary focus, having its localization as Phase One of its plan, to the point that Nintendo even choose to publish it in North America while the other two games were published by XSeed in North America.

All of them did well in Japan, so it comes down likely to just the companies behind the games not wanting to make the other two into series..and MonolithSoft ending up as a Fully Owned Nintendo 2nd Party in 2012, after Xenoblade Chronicles but before Xenoblade Chronicles X, probably helped as well, while the other two companies Nintendo had no stake in.
Why?

An all inclusive roster is not a "gimmick". It's not some promotional stunt to just be discarded after one game like Gigantamax Pokemon.
I agree..though there is one thing I'd say if they were going to continue keeping every character they reasonably can (due to licensing issues that could arise, of course) is that fans will have to get over their 'Too many Fire Emblem characters' mindset..Fact is that Sakurai will have to add new Fire Emblem characters to represent newer games in the series..we can't have that part of the roster stagnate..and that leaves us with only two options essentially, because Nintendo is not going to let one of their bigger 2nd Party series not have new representation..Either we have to get over how many characters Fire Emblem has, because Everyone is Here means EVERYONE..or we have to forego Everyone Is Here and allow certain characters to be cut in order to keep that part of the roster from becoming too bloated. Fact is that the deed is done, we have 8 Fire Emblem characters..we can't just exclude them if we're going to champion for everyone coming back..under that model, the FE Roster will increase..its just how it works.
I swear, this meme fits this fanbase sometimes when it comes to wanting Every Character to return but being upset by the amount certain series (or, rather, a certain series) has and wanting Everyone Is Here..

Depends primarily on timing, but new Pokémon & Fire Emblem reps seem likely, perhaps a new Xenoblade rep if the series keeps the momentum that XBC2 gave it going. Octolings seem pretty likely too consider Splatoon is still doing quite well and I think its unlikely that series will only have a single character in a future title when Octolings are perfect for a 2nd Rep.

I mean, I'm not going to be pissed at any RETURNING FE character. But I will continue to be pissed any time another NEW one is added.

The only third parties I'm quite confident will be returning veterans for the next Smash game (assuming the next Smash game doesn't go in a wild different direction) are:
:ultsonic: :ultmegaman: :ultpacman: :ultsteve:

The rest of the third parties range from "Likely" to "Not sure". But hey that's just assuming company relationships don't change too much in the near future, we don't really have the foresight to predict these sorts of things.

Probably Ring Fit I guess, it's the most successful new Nintendo IP since Splatoon. I want to say Waluigi as well but I said the same thing before Ultimate's reveal and we all know how that turned out 🥴

To play Devil's Advocate a bit, Akuma and even Geese in Tekken made people pop-off like crazy, not to mention the overall positive reception to Leroy Smith's initial reveal all had major success. Leroy was so liked that T-Pain ****ing cosplayed as him. Nothing to sneeze at. Obviously, Smash is a big crossover game. But you can also look at the general hype for DBFZ characters, let alone Marvel vs Capcom, another major crossover fighting game. With Marvel 2 also being an "Everyone is Here" thing. It's not like other titles are completely eclipsed in that regard. Hell, Tekken Tag 1 made a big deal about bringing back Kazuya and Tag 2 with Jun. Or MKA with it's 60 characters.

Guilty Gear is fairly obscure by normal standards, yet even on GG fans got excited when Nagoriyuki was teased too.

Even lame games like Jump Force gets carried on the fact that Yugi can fight Vegeta and Dio Brando.

FLEX having Terry is also really cool, but that game has little to no marketing, even compared to Tekken or MK.

Keep in mind I agree that people treat Smash reveals as the biggest deal overall, but it's just not the only example, even among casual game fans. New character reveals always hype people up.

While we’re on this topic, I’d like to ask everyone - assuming future Smash installments cut no characters, what characters do you think are shoe ins for the next Smash title that likely missed their chance as ultimate dlc?
Waluigi and Octoling.
I wouldn't sleep on Sans/Frisk either, reaction to the Mii costume was insane and I can't imagine it'd be hard to negotiate with Toby - just down to if he would them as fighters or not.

Yeah Nintendo seems to be on a roll with new IPs recently. RFA and Astral chain along with probably the octolings seem inevitable for the next Smash.

For third parties - Monster Hunter, Crash Bandicoot, Puyo Puyo, The World Ends with You, Yakuza, and GuiltyGear are all series that either got recent revivals, or had a recent surge in popularity thanks to a new game to a point where I think they’re series to watch out for if we have a dev time similar to the gap between Smash 4 and Ultimate. If the wait gets much longer it’s possible these series might miss their chance if their current popularity falls off, but it’s impossible to predict the future as to what might take their place.

I’ll also add that if Fortnite maintains its current popularity for another few years, then it’s another series I think will inevitably come to Smash much like Minecraft did.

Ah **** here we go again
Lucas AND Dark Pit glitches? Hoo boy...
On the infinitesimally small chance that these glitches are an indication of one of the next newcomers, then I feel that Lara Croft has a strong chance. But then again, so does any other character if you stretch it far enough.

So this character may have a headshot mechanic?

TimeSplitters has a headshot mechanic.

Well it's been fun guys but I think we all know who it's gonna be.

Psyche! It's Sgt. Cortez!

I really wish people could separate their feelings of SwSh from the Pokémon that debuted in it.

It's fine if you don't like the games, but I see too many comments implying that Gen 8 Pokémon suck simply because they're Gen 8 Pokémon.
"Could it be that people don't like the same handful of mons constantly suggested for gen 8 or that a lot of people would rather have something else other than the 11th character from any franchise as seen with how this exact same thing happened with gen 7 and FE?"

...

"No, they hate gen 8 and are too biased"

As for stage rankings...

:ult_terry: KoF stadium has the coolest ****ing gimmick, it's so satisfying to be able to have wall bounce combos, someone dying will have the fireworks in the back which work very well with the night sky, the cameos are ****ing amazing and finally, those ****ing songs. Honestly, the worst thing about this stage is that it didn't happen sooner.

:ultsephiroth: I was very fond of Midgar from an aesthetic standpoint in Smash 4 so you'd think the Northern Crater would be underwhelming but no, it's one of the most gorgeous stages in the game that really sells how weird the area is in game, but the transition uses the game's story unlike damn near every other traveling stage, I remember being in awe at Holy and the Lifestream stopping Meteor when Sakurai showed that off on my birthday. The music's also great which is just icing on the cake.

:ultjoker: Mementos is stunning, the layout is pretty neat but the visual effects show that there's absolutely nothing else like this in the game, I'm not interested in P5 due to hearing very iffy stuff about it's writing, but they captured the stylish look so well! The 3 colours all look very nice, and the added detail about Joker's victory screen is just really nice. The train's also very nice because there haven't really been any other stages involving a train, have there? And of course, the music. Great all around and though I don't really pick it much, it's always refreshing to see on the screen.

:ultsteve: Minecraft's aesthetic has always been rather cute to me, so getting a nice stage in that look is a real treat. There's nothing super interesting gameplay wise but the blocky look gets complimented by a nice day and night cycle with the monsters popping out and how they burn at the sunlight. This might have been a tad higher though if you'd be able to enter the houses like the trailer implied, but other than that, it's really nice. I'd say something about the music, but Hallard or whatever it's called is so ****ing great that I forget Minecraft came with more than 1 song, fantastic job overall.

:ultbylethf: Garreg Mach's pretty damn neat for 2 reasons. 1: It's an FE stage to be an actual location, Ferox was this too but I actually care about the location here as Ferox was just a side area you visit like what, twice in Awakening? Second, the stage uses surprisingly rare themes as I believe this is the first stage to be set in a school and the first stage to be set in a marketplace. I'm especially happy with the latter as breaking the food stands really makes me feel like I'm in a big ass fight, especially as I've always felt Smash needed a bar stage for a barfight. 3H also has what's easily my favourite FE OST so all around, it's pretty pleasing. The models are rather rough but it's still cool to see them in the game.

:ulthero: :ultminmin: These stages are just so boring. Yggdrasil's Altar is the same old grassy area in broad daylight we've seen a million times and while the Spring Stadium has a less overused aesthetic, one that I actually really like too, it's such a downgrade from the other stadium we got, no fun effects in the back beyond cameos which are static JPGs and no fun gimmick but rather bounce pads which really don't feel fun to use at all. The music for both is also dull, DQ music's really too generic for my tastes and Arms uses a Leitmotif for all it's tracks. This means all the songs sound at least somewhat similar, meaning at that point it doesn't really matter which song is picked

:ultpyra::ultbanjokazooie: These are both here for the same reasons. 1: They're dull. The Cloud Sea isn't interesting to look at, and neither is the millionth grassy area in broad daylight. 2: The appeal of cameos is "Hey look how cool it is to see your favourite characters!" This naturally fails when you don't like them to begin with, especially when including the character who's a sex offender because lol **** is funny I guess 3: They're not fun at all, Cloud Sea's small and it's gimmick is shrinking because **** you, how dare you try to enjoy yourself. Spiral Mountain is also pretty damn disorienting due to the constant spinning, very unfun. 4: I'm forced to play these stages because some of the people I play with just absolutely love them and call any criticisms nitpicking, which is frustrating because both of them have asked me to stop picking Dracula's Castle and Umbra Clock Tower for similar issues they have with their favourites, so yeah. And finally, the music. I do not care for any of the tracks at all and Sakurai seemed to think "Hmmm how do I make Gwen dislike these stages even more". After all, did we get any X songs? Of course not! Did we get the one Banjo song I actually like? Of course not!

Terry merely adopted this stage. Little Mac was born in it...molded by it...
