I’m seeing all this talk about banjo being chosen because he was a popular pick for the fans but wasn’t he chosen specifically because they were after Steve and Microsoft at the time was just like “here you go, have banjo as a bonus as well, the fans will want him”

woudnt that suggest banjo was just lucky enough to get in and wasn’t exactly chosen to please the fans.

I could be wrong but I feel like I remember sakurai saying somewhere that banjo got in as apart of the Steve deal and not necessarily got in because Nintendo wanted him. I could be wrong though. Feel free to correct me
Not really. We have a few interviews with Phil Spencer, like this one, where he talks about Microsoft and Ninty's relationship over Minecraft, so it opened the door for talks between companies. But it's just that: talks between companies. Not every business deal with Nintendo has Smash as the endgoal.

There's literally nothing from Sakurai, either. In fact, he flat out said that they were incredibly requested particularly by the west, and that the requests "just kept coming", even after Ridley and K. Rool. Which points straight in the opposite direction from this theory. If Steve had been in Volume 1, I'd say the chances of the bear and bird being in Volume 2 would still be quite high. It wouldn't really matter who got in first, they were both going to be added regardless. It's just that Rare was apparently easier to talk to.

So really, this "Banjo was just a tagalong" is probably just a narrative people created to justify a character they don't like being in. It probably latched on easily as a consequence of people's obsession with sales figures and Minecraft being, well, Minecraft.

  • Nobody expected an ARMS character as DLC, since ARMS had come out 3 years before Min Min's inclusion in Smash.
  • Everybody thought Steve had little chance of showing up since we already got Banjo in the last pass and there was no way we would get two Microsoft characters, right?
  • Although Sephiroth was talked about a decent amount, Geno and Sora were discussed way more than him.
  • For a Xenoblade 2 rep, everyone was expecting Rex but we got Pyra/Mythra instead.
  • We all expected a Namco rep, but since Heihachi already had a costume we didn't think we'd get a Tekken character. Kazuya was overlooked because we thought that Heihachi would be the hypothetical Tekken rep.
Wonder if the last character will fit this trend as well.

Ironically, the most viable case of a tagalong character is sepiroth and cloud. we know cloud barely got back in ultimate, probably at the insistence with square that sepiorth be negotiated in as dlc. i wouldn't put it past square that they'd control almost everything from costumes, to when he is revealed, to even his trailer (coincidence that sepiroth trailer is literally the advent children climax shot for shot?). I'm in the corporate world these are things marketing of large companies discuss.

if you want to guess fp 11 you will need to combine a 3rd party character with somone that brings new aspects to the game. im still looking at a blizzard character or a League champion like ahuri.

i read it ill summarize.
he basically says smash is making a mistake by not appealing to the "core audience" demands in issac and other characters. which i find utterly ridiculous. smash core audience isnt going to abandon the game or not buy the next one. dlc is to get more people interested in smash and it has done that by going with 3rd party icons.

banjo got in becuase phil Spencer wanted him in and rare wanted him in and was willing to work to make it happen. fans think they are the center of everything, and they aren't. its not how these companies work.
I'm not sure how many fans think they're the center of everything, but I think it's more than reasonable for a fanbase to wish they were part of something. I think a lot of the drama comes from the seemingly flamboyant apathy Nintendo has towards their own base. Granted, I totally see the logic in their strategy for appealing to other fanbases, but it doesn't make that truth any easier for long time fans to swallow.

Also, I wouldn't recommend referring to the smash audience with such all-encompassing strokes. I've been a long time fan of Smash since the beginning, but if the next Smash bros ends up cutting a lot of my favorite characters, you can bet your ass I ain't buyin'. I do have a limit to how much a franchise can sour before I jump ship. Glares at Pokemon

In addition:
  • Spring Man was an Assist Trophy, and there were a good number of ARMS Spirits and Mii Costumes.
  • More FF content in general, much less as DLC, was thought to be a pipe dream.

Expecting a fighting game to always have the entire roster of the previous is not realistic. no fighting game fanbase expects that except the smash fanbase even after they spent a good portion of the time complaining about certain inclusion (3 links and 3 "marths" for example.) unless you play a core character to the series they might not return.
pokemon cut its roster due to external factors that smash doesnt have see the video below.
the next smash game will not have this roster of this size on launch. its just not a logisitcal possibility. i wont expect the smash fanbase to understand that or handle it well but it will happen.

I mean, people Understand it easily.

It's liking it that's a different topic entirely.

Smash will always sell, that's just the way it is, because at the end of the day, casuals don't care about that kinda stuff, and competitive players will(usually) always buy in due to it being the new game to rack up Twitch and Tourney bux.

Even then, I don't think the term really applies. For starters, Sephiroth is still one of the most iconic video game villains ever, with or without the "relevancy" of FF7R. And the traler paying homage to AC seems more like the team being fans rather than Square being controlling - we also saw insanely specific references in other trailers like Hero, Banjo and Kazooie and Terry.

And I feel like the whole "Square stingy" thing started out of a misinterpratetion regarding the company's practices. Looking at other guest appearances like 2B in SCVI, Noctis in Tekken 7 or even Cloud, Hero and Sephiroth themselves, there seems to be a clear preference for paid DLC in that company's negotiations. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, it's just how they roll, I guess.

I think the "Banjo was a bonus" theory is really more trying to rationalize the idea of Nintendo actually choosing Banjo for DLC.

Remember prior to June 2019, people were arguing that Nintendo would never put Banjo & Kazooie in because they're old forgotten characters owned by one of their big competitors, and that they were also western characters which Smash hadn't seen yet (besides the DKC crew and Dark Samus, which were handwaved as being made for established Nintendo IPs). For a lot of people, it just seemed hard to believe that a usually conservative company like Nintendo would reach out to a competitor for just what is now an Xbox exclusive franchise that hasn't had a new game since 2008.

The idea of B-K really being a byproduct with Minecraft being the real prize in Nintendo's eyes made their inclusion make a little more sense because Minecraft is an IP NCL actually gives a **** about and is pretty much the main reason Nintendo even has a relationship with Microsoft, as mentioned above. It's also been stated that Nintendo had been negiotating with MS to bring Minecraft into Smash for five years by that point.

To be honest, does anyone on here have enough knowledge about Banjo-Kazooie's inclusion in Smash to actually give a true opinion either way. I don't think we have enough information to prove or disprove anyone else's comments in this thread about the topic.

It did help that Phil Spencer supported their inclusion too.

this is me being bias in a way but this just screams to me professor Layton. Honestly it would bring A fully unique moveset that hasn’t been seen in smash yet and I’m surprised it hasn’t been done yet

it would bring puzzle elements to the games along with Brain teaser elements and hint coins to the game which hasn’t been done yet.

really surprised it hasn’t happened since hino and sakurai are buddy buddies and level 5 have their own section on the Nintendo website in the characters hub section.

Sure, it may not be realistic to expect a fighting game to retain its roster, especially one this size, but that doesn't mean I'll buy a game with half the roster just cuz it's Smash. I'd choose to adhere to a new schism in the fanbase a la Melee. Logistical limitations are all well and good, but I personally don't give a damn. I love playing Cloud and Seph and Greninja and Wolf and tons of other characters. You take them away, I'll just happily stay behind. That's exactly what I did with Pokemon. They started excluding tons of my competitive pokemon, so I flipped them the bird and quit. Any time they finally gather the budget/gumption to make a Pokemon Stadium 3 (or something that prioritizes inclusion for battles over story) that allows me to play my competitive teams again, I'll gladly come back. Until then, no money from me. Maybe they don't care? I know I don't. Not anymore. Understanding a short-coming doesn't mean I have to like it or reward it.

As for whether the next smash will have a smaller roster, that seems like a fairly realistic possibility, but how do you know? "Not a logistical possibility?" So you know exactly what kind of hardware Nintendo's going to use for their next system? You know all the private dealings of the 3rd party companies? You can read Sakurai's thoughts? Hot dog, fill us in then! I could use some spoilers!

To be fair, I don't know any game person who DOESN'T want a character they own to be in Smash...
Difference is Phil Spencer was the CEO of a company that had a game that Nintendo wanted to represent so the idea of having Banjo & Kazooie in Smash could be realised.

Imagine running a video game company and you're asked if one of your characters could appear in SMASH of all things and you say "Nah"
Crazy as it sounds, I could see Disney pulling something like this. Nintendo could ask them for Sora, to which Disney replies, "Oh sure, you just have to make sure that we also get some kind of Smash content for Donald and Goofy and Mickey and Pluto and Daisy and Pete and Maleficent and Aladdin and Jasmine and Cinderella and..."

Nintendo: "Um, we just wanted Sora."

Disney: "OK, never mind then."

EDIT: Oh, I see the qualifier "video game company". Would Disney even count as that? I guess they're kind of in everything these days.

In recent industry news.
There was a problem fetching the tweet
He can't keep getting away with it!
Is this the version where Beavis and Butt-head are playable or was that the MEGA version? There's so many versions I can't keep it all straight. For all I know, this could be the WWF version of Skyrim with Hulk Hogan and Jake the Snake!

Surely Skyrim: WWF Edition was released by now right? Skyrim: Brother Edition guest starring Hulk Hogan? Skyrim Quahog Edition? Surely that one is next!

My current bet is that it will fit that trend:

They said it couldn't be done, told them that its the kinda battle that just couldn't be done.

He'll never make it, no, not in THIS lifetime.

WELL GUESS AGAIN MY FRIEND!

Waluigi is gonna fight the war and use music as a weapon! (no not literally, just referencing Disturbed's Dropping Plates still. Actually he could be a Mario Party Fighter)

Waluigi. There's NO WAY he will happen, he's already an Assist Trophy. There's just NO WAY it'll be Waluigi over any other 3rd party.

And then it turns out that yes... it is indeed.. WA. HA. HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Probably stay with the ballot results but I think a new ballot would be great since there is a plethora of new characters that might be worth considering..
More importantly, there's a bunch of characters from the old ballot that are now in Smash. Which frees up those voters to vote for someone else.

and FF7 deserves an AT. Maybe Tifa or Aerith
Chocobo.

IF they did do a ballot for smash 6 who would be at the top?
Probably Sora...

the next smash game will not have this roster of this size on launch. its just not a logisitcal possibility. i wont expect the smash fanbase to understand that or handle it well but it will happen.
Anything is logistically possible with enough budget. Especially with a digital product.

The problem with Pokemon is TPC is surprisingly tight fisted for having the more profitable IP in gaming.

At this moment I just wish we knew at least 2 of the mii costumes that are coming with fp11. We’d probably be able to work out what FP11’s mii wave theme is which in return would probably allow us to rule out a bunch of characters since each characters min waves so far have come in patters

Apparently min min’s is characters who have businesses

Steve’s is characters with blue swords

pyra and myphra’s is characters from worlds filled with hostile creatures

kazuya’s was characters who are half and half of something if that makes sense

and obviously sephiroth’s was square costumes.

if we knew at least 2 of the last mii wave costumes we’d probably be able to narrow down a few themes the last character could be associated with.

are there any characters currently speculated highly to be mii fighters and have evidence backing them.

Considering :ultpalutena: , :ultkrool: and :ultjoker: :

That said, having Little Mac punch away lasers does sound fun. And TBF, they've started to add reflectors to the normal movesets (Min Min and Kazuya), so there's that option too.
The idea of :ultlittlemac: punching away projectiles is something we all need.

Fully appriciate the list - there are some characters that could use it more than others. :ultganondorf: does need it more than :ultfalcon: IMHO - Falcon has very few issues with gap closing, while Ganondorf relies more on opponents making a mistake in order to gap close and create fear in the opponent's head. Or a game turning into a bar brawl, that suits Ganon just fine too.

I do agree though that :ultkirby: and :ultjigglypuff: could also use that - it would help their approaches.
Thanks for the feedback.
As for :ultfalcon: vs :ultganondorf:, you got a point there. Characters with strong rushdown capabilities probably won't need it whereas slower characters like:ultganondorf::ultkingdedede::ultincineroar::ultbyleth: would benefit the most from these tools. :ultcorrin: would also benefit from Dragon Lunge having projectile invulnerability frames and I love the idea of :ultridley:'s Side B having those as well, though I'm not sure if it could be considered unnecessary or not.

And this extends to potential newcomers: take Rayman for example. Since Rayman's signature attack is his hands boomeranging, the scenario where those hands clank with projectiles would be potentially irritating for his players. Megaman's jab in particular, since he shoots three pellets compared with Rayman's two hands. Of course, there's intangibility for that too, but not sure how to balance that since intangibility also goes through melee attacks. Ditto someone like Kiryu or mayyybe Sakura (depending on if she uses the mech primarily or goes mostly on foot in PxZ, if the former I find it a bit more likely since the mech's a bigger target).
Absolutely, if Rayman were to be playable, he should definitely have projectile invulnerability. Crash too, since there is a good possibility he would have no projectiles

Not really. We have a few interviews with Phil Spencer, like this one, where he talks about Microsoft and Ninty's relationship over Minecraft, so it opened the door for talks between companies. So really, this "Banjo was just a tagalong" is probably just a narrative people created to justify a character they don't like being in. It probably latched on easily as a consequence of people's obsession with sales figures and Minecraft being, well, Minecraft.
This,:ultbanjokazooie: would have made it in regardless of whether or not Steve got in or not (and vice versa for Steve obviously) just because they were on a level of fan demand few matched. They were just that popularly requested and it is chuckle-worthy to look back on all the people who downplayed them. There is also the fact that "Minecraft paved the way" does not translate to the idea that Steve had any direct factor in BK making it in. It's obvious the context was referring to Minecraft finally being released on a Nintendo console in 2015 that improved relationship, not the idea of Steve being in Smash (which was never even implied, nevermind the fact that NDAs would forbid them from hinting at the idea of Steve before he was revealed if they were referring to a future Smash DLC character)

It's also been stated that Nintendo had been negiotating with MS to bring Minecraft into Smash for five years by that point.
So essentially, it’s just because of left-over saltiness over BK making it in despite how “irrelevant” they were.

“Core Fanbase” to the US means Banjo. “Core Fanbase” to Japan means Hero. “Core Fanbase” to Mexico means Terry.

We have gotten many things that appeal to a Core Fanbase, they just don’t all appeal to the same place.
Core fanbase is the Smash fanbase. You're talking about regional popularity with the last two. If the LatAm Smash fanbase was heavily requesting Terry, then, yes, that'd be a core fanbase request for that region. If he's just a character with a lot of general popularity there, that doesn't inherently mean he's a core fanbase request. It depends on what the Smash fanbase is requesting.

Look at Lara Croft. A very popular character in general (in the west)... not really a core fanbase character. They're different things.
Think the best piece of evidence confirming that is the "Latinos react" video - and under that criteria I'd say yes, he was. While I haven't seen many pre-reveal requests from Terry - not even from there, chances are pretty good it's due to percieved likelihood. After all, B-K requests only started to really ramp up once Phil Spencer spoke up and the percieved likelihood shot up from practically nothing (IIRC). Also, Nintendo does consider LatAm part of the major "Americas" region, and Mexico's has had a Smash fanbase since at least Melee.

It also does beg the question of how Smash speculation changes if Nintendo - and Smash - starts to gain a more significant foothold in other regions. There are lots of smaller Smash fanbases like in the Middle East and SEA, but I'm not entirely sure if Nintendo gets that established foothold before Smash 6 rolls around. If I was forced to guess which of those feels likliest I'd place my bets on China, since the Switch has sold ca. 4 million (combining official units and unofficial imports) there. I'm not aware of the exact sales data in other regions, but I'm pretty sure that China's the biggest non-major region for Nintendo.

Yeah the backlash to certain characters might become worse (slurs would probably become more common), but it would also boost quite a lot of characters (including a lot of established ones within the speculation scene, to the surprise of a lot of people).

are there any characters currently speculated highly to be mii fighters and have evidence backing them.
To be blunt, nope (at least, not what I know). Knowing how Sakurai and his team operates (not to mention how Nintendo operates at large), they'd much rather keep everything related to CP11 - incl. the costumes - Top Secret. Until the timing is right - which they decide upon. Especially after the SNK copyright leak / mishap.

I know the wait can feel... straining (for a lack of a better term), but it's all us on the outside can do really.

Has anyone considered the simple idea that we haven't got that many supposed "fan demand" characters simply because in terms of pure fan demand, there is no other character left in terms of sheer fan demand compared to :ultridley::ultkrool::ultbanjokazooie: and that is precisely the reason why Nintendo is largely looking outside the scope of the Smash fanbase in order to draw in new fans instead of appealing to the existing fanbases?

Waluigi still isn't in the game, he has a pretty huge fanbase that rivals those 3 characters and he is easy to add to the game.

I don't know why people always latch onto the wording when somebody says "Waluigi isn't in the game" even though it's pretty clear what context I'm saying this in.

Seriously, it's just annoying, not even funny.
We know, but in the greater context of Smash, he 'is' in. Sorta like how Isaac and Geno, both long-time requests, 'are' in.
