A decent chunk of (mmo)rpgs I played tended to not have dedicated gunner classes, while the holy trinity of sword, brawler, and wizard/mage was in pretty much all of them in some shape or form, with a few exceptions for stuff like Digimon Cyber Sleuth where there aren’t really any dedicated classes
Brawlers are not part of the RPG trilogy.

The trinity is warrior, cleric and either wizard, or possibly ranger.

The monk archetype is, like, the 5th or 6th place RPG archetype.

I usually don't pay much attention to clerics and lump them into mages anyway :4duckhunt:

they tend to usually be dedicated magic healers anyway

While I'd LOVE Bandana Waddle Dee and wouldn't mind Waluigi, I would take nearly any (if not EVERY) character listed here!

What's more, I have to say that it really does sort of amaze me how Nintendo (the folks who HOST this crossover, no less) is constantly underrated in regards to their own selection of possible characters.

Question for you all. Who are your three personal choices for the final pass and what three characters would you be hyped for if they got in instead?
So basically...who are your top 6? Edit: Nevermind, you clarified in a later post

Three personal choices:
1. Ryu Hayabusa [Ninja Gaiden]
2. Bill Rizer/Lance Bean [Contra]
3. Arthur [Ghosts ‘n Goblins]

Characters you're not extremely attached to but would be cool with:
Sora [Kingdom Hearts]
Sol Badguy [Guilty Gear]
Doom Slayer [Doom]

I thought it was the Warrior, Mage and Thief? Like in Diablo 1 or Skyrim's first three stones?
Honestly, it varies depending on the series. But obviously, games that are solo focused like Diablo or Skyrim don't usually have a dedicated healer class.

But Monk is rarely in the top 3. A lot of fantasy settings don't even have monk(being medieval Europe pastiches as they often are).

I think I see the confusion here. Yeah the holy trinity is tank, healer, & DPS (typically a mage or a rogue/thief). The tank is usually a warrior/fighter though. Brawlers usually come in the form of a Monk, which is almost always DPS class.

While we're on the topic of rpg classes, I just want to say with how many rpg games I've played I've seen some very specilaized classes.

Stuff like the Katars from Aura Kingdom for example
Brawler-concept.png

Granted my area of expertise is in MMOrpgs so seeing these kind of hyper-specific classes is nothing new to me

And I think I'm gonna call it a night there.

It’s what happens when you start adding a whole bunch of third parties all at the same time. Not saying any of them are bad/unwelcome, but when you just add 4 of them in a row, people are going to shift discussion to exclusively third party and disregard the numerous possibilities still available through first party characters that could yet be added.

I've played dozens of mmorpgs and yeah this is pretty accurate.

the usual seems to be 1) generic swordie(shield, no shield, 2 swords, etc) dedicated healer(bard, wizard, etc) and then a dedicated tanky class(lance,no weapon, etc)

most also seem to have axe-based classes, ranger/gunslinger, mages, even some really out there stuff like a Ronin, Gutuarist, etc, but those 3 are the bread of butter of any rpg, mmo or not. From my experience anyway.

Yeah, the majority of the passes have been third-party. Only a quarter of the characters so far have been owned by Nintendo (Not counting Piranha Plant, who was a bonus).

And then you have Guild Wars where the common archetype for Monks was thrown out and Monks are the main healers, although depending on build, they could also be a DPS Magic class, but there's almost always one Monk healer.

We're in the new year and Fighters Pass is halfway done. And we have 2 leaks that could be potential from 2 different sites. Which one is most likely real?

Team 4chan:
"Rayman, Doomslayer, and Hayabusa"

or Team 5ch:
"Reimu, Crash, and KOS-MOS"
Well, one is great and the other is garbagio. I'm going to believe in Sakurai and say the good one.

And then you have WoW in which Monk's can be either Tank, DPS Or Healer depending on your Specialization

Monk's are more of an aesthetic than a specific role.

Never Evers that would heart attack me:
Elma (Xenoblade)
Isaac (Golden Sun)
Kratos (God of War)

Special Mention:
Crash (Crash Bandicoot)

Crash fits somewhere in between all three so, yeah.

While we're on the topic of rpg classes, with how many rpg games I've played I've seen some very specilaized classes.

Stuff like the Katars from Aura Kingdom for example
Guild Wars 2 mostly has the standard fair, but they do some interesting things with them:

  • Necromancers have the Death Shroud meter that they can tap into that gives them different skills, and essentially acts as a temporary health bar. They can also create hordes of undead minions and blow 'em up for massive damage, but that's no longer optimal so I've never actually seen anyone do it, which is a shame.
  • Elementalists can't switch weapons, but they can switch between the four elements; Fire for damage, water for healing, earth for support, and air lightning for crowd control. They also die if you look at them funny. Or so I'm told, I've yet to play one to a decent level and I'm generally better at the complex classes than my source. lol
  • Mesmers are illusionists who create a bunch of clones that attack on their own, and then blow 'em up for massive damage or debuffs. Super fun to play.
  • Rangers have a pet that fights with you...That's it. That's the class. It's the only one where you can completely ignore your main mechanic.
  • Thieves have what's basically a mana system instead of the normal cooldowns. They can also "steal spells from their opponents", which is a lot less interesting than it sounds. If you play as an Asura you get to do the flippy flippy thing with the daggers though! It's fun!
  • Engineers have a utility belt that gives them more skills, and they can make contraptions and such that give them even more skills. Because of this, they can't switch weapons.
  • Warriors are the standard fair, but they do have an adrenaline gauge that allows them to do more powerful attacks when it's full.
  • Guardians are basically reskinned paladins (because not all of the races are religious). They have a few extra skills on their bar that...uh...I don't remember. I've never actually played one in-depth. I think they give you passive buffs, and can be activated for some extra support abilities or something.
  • Revenants were added later on, which means you'll have to deal with "Rytlock, what's this strange new magic?" even though you're the same class. They invoke two spirits from The Mists (oversimplified; the afterlife) that give you your utility skills. These skills also have no cooldowns, but they do consume meter.
The best part is that Guild Wars 2 doesn't use the holy trinity so if you want to play as a class, you can as long as you can wrap your head around its main mechanic.

And then you have Guild Wars where the common archetype for Monks was thrown out and Monks are the main healers, although depending on build, they could also be a DPS Magic class, but there's almost always one Monk healer.
And then they got rid of Monks because Charr don't have gods.

And then you have WoW in which Monk's can be either Tank DPS Or Healer depending on your Specialization

Monk's are more of an aesthetic than a specific role.
Eh I'd still say they're the outliers. Generally Monk classes tend to focus on the "imma punch you" rather than the devout aspect of actual monks.

I think that the problem is that Smash 4 dlc too was also mostly third party, and the few first party characters we got in both games dlc was from recent games at the time (Corrin, Min min and Byleth) (I don't count Piranha plant and veterans). There's still a lot of fan of first party, I am a fan of Rhythm heaven, Porky, Mach rider and Style savvy in Smash and people still want more like Isaac, it's just not really likely that they are add so they're not really discussed.

I appreciate when people show appreciation to first party picks the next guy, and ther's plenty of sensible or cool characters on the list, that said:

-I find it odd they listed Jenna before Isaac (assuming this was made top to bottom). Nothing against her, but still...
-Master of Disguise Wario...why? I'm not a fan of having "characters we already have but a different version of them" as is, like Paper Mario or Baby Mario, but that just seems even more odd when that was from literally just one game.
-Koopa and chozo...errr...doesn't really help the case for first parties. :ultpiranha: wasn't exactly universally loved, even by first party fans, so...

EDIT: Oh I guess I accidentally quoted Rie instead of who she was quoting. Whoopsies...

This sounds like a fun game. If you could add 3 bosses to Ultimate, who would they be?
My 3.
1. Giygas
2. Mother Brain
3. GladOS.
1. Titan Dweevil from Pikmin
2. Dr. Eggman (Both as a boss and fighter, just like Bowser and Ganon)
3. Rayqauza returning from Brawl but with his Mega Evo in phase 2

I feel like I keep dying on the inside when another 3rd party gets into Smash over Nintnedo characters.

(No wonder everyone says that first party reps are boring as DLC and never bring hype, remember when Corrin disappointed everyone due to Fire Emblem having too many reps back in Smash 4?)

Ah, I wasn't aware of that.
Yeah, its a weird bit of Trivia that isn't that well known, but it is a fact..you can see for yourself in the link later on in this post.
If that's true, it's very weird that the Waluigi Pinball remix includes that melody.
Oh, its true for sure, as you can see here..
"In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wario’s victory theme was an arrangement of the Stonecarving City theme from Shake It!, which hadn’t yet come out. Were you involved in this special cameo?"
"No, that was another piece I received from Nintendo. I didn’t do anything for Brawl."

I don't know why they felt like including the song in the Waluigi Pinball remix in Super Smash Bros. Brawl..it does kinda make you wonder which one came first. My guess, however, is that either the same composer did both songs or, more likely, it was included in Waluigi Pinball as a reference to Waluigi's connection with Wario.

  • Velvet Crowe (Tales of Berseria)

Honestly, I keep coming back to this lineup:
Imagine those are the last three characters in FP2. Would you be satisfied?

I'm not super hyped for any of these three, but they are all pretty cool and could bring some neat stuff to the table.

So the Super Mario 3D World Switch port comes out on February 12th. If there's a direct happening then it's definitely going to be sometime before then because we still don't know what the Bowser's Fury mode is exactly. But they could easily just shadowdrop a new trailer on Twitter as well.
