I don't think that anniversaries are that big of a deal. The only newcomer whose reveal was timed with an anniversary was Little Mac.

Yeah, I'm not focusing on the anniversaries. What I'm focusing on is the livestream that accompanies the Tales anniversary. Steve's reveal was times around MineCon, and seeing as Bamco's working on Smash, I wouldn't be too surprised if a Tales rep was planned to have their reveal and/or overview video times around the Tales livestream as well.

Sephiroth's presentation was released on the same day as the Japanese anniversary for the Final Fantasy series. That's the only other time though I believe.

I don't think so, especially with Monster Hunter Rise coming out around the same time.

I’m honestly kinda curious as to when we’ll get even a peep of the next fighter. I doubt it’ll be as long a wait as Min-Min—> Steve but I’m hoping it’s coming sometime in the next few months

it would be very funny if it dropped on feburary 12 because that’s my b-day

I think that it will be in March, with a strong chance of it being the Monster Hunter because of Rise.

I'm pretty sure that trailer would've been at TGA if it were a week earlier or later even if it missed the anniversary. I think they like it when there's an anniversary to tie into but I seriously doubt it figures in more than "oh neat, we can say it's for that too".

I imagine all the times the trailers have lined up with anniversaries have been just happy coincidences, and nothing worth speculating about. Even if they did purposely line up characters with anniversaries that still barely narrows down the list of potential fighters and while having a smaller list would be nice it tends to turns speculation into a nightmare as any dark horse, pipe dream or otherwise picks become immediately attacked on sight for “not lining up with the facts”

I just prefer to sit back and watch from the sidelines. They’ll all be revealed in time, no need to take everything very serious as if it’s a game of life or
death.

  • Steve was reveal and released around Minecon, the presentation was just before Minecon started.

This is as much a first-party as any time a Nintendo property splits its ownership between Nintendo and the developer, which is quite regularly.

This is functionally no different than when Game Freak and Platinum got spirit events. Third-party developer, first-party content, joint ownership.

up and down and all around
And now for your daily dose of optimism-laced theorizing

Aside from that, there's also the fact that Bamco probably gets a bigger slice of the pie than most already, since they're working on the base game. Perhaps Nintendo felt they were best confined to a DLC pack so they didn't take up too much of the profits, followed Bamco got the Tales character pushed back to capitalized on the 25th anniversary livestream. I believe COVID delayed the stream, so that could've pushed the character back even farther.
I feel like the problem with assuming COVID impacted a Tales rep because of the stream getting pushed back is assuming that character order was switched around, and I'm not really sure that's the case here IMHO. With statements we have from Sakurai and the snappy releases of Steve and Sephiroth, I don't think COVID was as much of a problem as we were initially worried it would be for Smash development. I think Sakurai and his team have adjusted pretty well with remote development.

That said, I don't think a Bamco rep is impossible or anything, it's just that I don't really expect it personally over Capcom and KT ATM. I'm also still in the camp one of the three's gonna be a Nintendo character as well, so I just don't think they went with a Bamco character this time around, unfortunately.

Just to clarify, I'm not basing anything off of actual anniversary dates. Heck, Tales' actual anniversary has already passed; It was in December, and got shoved back because of COVID. I'm basing it off of the fact that there's a big Tales event going on that a Tales reveal trailer could be times around, much like with Steve and MineCon. It just so happens that said event is for the (delayed) anniversary celebration. There's a chance I'm wrong anyways; Just making sure people don't get the wrong idea.

Yeah, I was mostly just theorizing on that part. The main bulk of the theory is the idea of a Tales rep or some other Bamco fighter getting pushed back, and I kinda tossed the COVID delay idea in there because it would fit the idea of the fighter being delayed multiple times.

From what that one reporter from Kotaku got out of Doug Bowser pretty much everything related to actually making the games was mostly unaffected by Covid.(you don’t have to physically be in a building to code and add to a library after all.)It was the manufacturing that was hit the hardest and was the reason why we barely got any games. If you can’t actually make the cartridges you can’t exactly release a game either unless you make it digital only. And we all know how much that woulda sucked.

Alright, purely as an entertaining thought exercise, let's see what anniversaries would coincide with a 2021 smash reveal.
Now, let's filter this list a bit.
Legend:
Console, not actually a game.
Newcomer in DLC Pass 1 already
Newcomer in base
Newcomer from same company in DLC Pass 2
Non-videogame franchise
Actually just Smash again
Only the anniversary of a sequel, not the series
Spirited in DLC event
Spirited in base game

That leaves us with:
Crash Bandicoot
Devil May Cry
Overwatch
(large gap)
Runescape
in order of who I personally think is most likely to least.
If we were to subscribe to anniversaries pointing to something, these would be the franchises most affected I would think.

Question for you all. Who are your three personal choices for the final pass and what three characters would you be hyped for if they got in instead?

My three choices are:
2B
Tracer
Chun-li

The Three choices that would make me hyped if chosen:
Nero/Dante/Vergil (Really anyone from DMC)
Phoenix Wright
Isaac (From Golden Sun)

Honorable mention:
Viewtiful Joe

Thanatos is getting added for Kid Icarus' 35th anniversary and Kamek will be added for Yoshi's Island 26th anniversary. You heard it here first.
Anyway, I felt like making my own selection of 100 first-party characters.

Yeah, a lot of the characters were also in that list but Pokemon and Fire Emblem needed to be there.

So, personal wants, then characters you're not extremely attached to but would be cool with regardless?

There is no John Raimi here. Massive disappointment compared to the other list.

I will be honest. I am starting to feel Devil May Cry might be getting something because of the 20th anniversary.

YOU ACTUALLY DID IT!
Characters like NSA Figure and Wii Safety Man are the type of joke requests I love so much.

Is Geist any good? You're literally the only person I've seen talk about that game and a number of obscure Gamecube era games seem interesting.

Holy... Wow underrated fact.

Also, Cloud was announced on a December, same month as Sephiroth, wasn't it?

-

As for 3 characters that would make me really excited to finish the pass:

Mike Jones
Tails / Eggman / Metal Sonic / Amy / Shadow
Joe Musashi / Ryu Hayabusa

(And low-key, Crono too, but I can settle for Hero).

I don’t see why this Calamity event would effect KT’s chances when it’s an event about Nintendo characters. If it was an event about one of their IPs then I’d say it’s a wrap for them, but it’s not. I imagine they’re only in the copyright because it was their artwork that was used.

I remember someone stating somewhere that since Doom Slayer wasn’t revealed at The Game Awards on Dooms Anniversary there was no way he would be revealed later. I don’t recall who that was but that’s the one that stuck with me.

Pretty sure there’s a lot going against the Slayer but the coincidence of TGA’s date lining up with its anniversary isn’t one of them. If Doom Slayer is somehow magically number 9 it’s not going to stop him from being revealed because it wasn’t at TGA. That makes no sense.

I mean, its good to use to speculate on possible characters reveals. I think it warrants to put some, never all, stock into some
I don't think it's worth putting any stock into, but I know better than to expect it will stop.

As long as there are pieces, people will make them try to fit together.
