I am not entirely sure if the spirit event might be that big of a blow to a Koei-Tecmo character's chances, we had that Trials of Mana spirit event months before Sephiroth was revealed. Then again, Square-Enix already had fighters in both the base roster and the previous fighter pass, so it's not exactly comparable.

The reveals are technically on a series-by-series basis but they're also at a company-by-company basis. Terry's pack absolutely was Smash x SNK in practice, and Geno's Mii costume was explicitly stated to be possible back in SSB4 because they were dealing with Square Enix for Cloud.

The line of thought, then, is that if a 3rd party company gets content in Smash's DLC without getting this kind of treatment, and without having already had a fighter in the base game to begin with, it suggests that they aren't planning a fighter that would come with a more thorough set of content from the company.
Or... it's just content.

Companies can make more than one deal. Sakurai isn't gonna say "sorry Tecmo I'd really love to add Hayabusa but your copyright is already on the Age of Calamity spirit event." Ignore that the pass was long decided before this event for this example. Vault Boy getting Mii'd does mean that Fallout is pretty dead in the water, but Fallout doesn't have anything to do with Skyrim or Doom besides being owned by the same company... who is now owned by a company that already has two fighters so woops there went that faulty logic anyway, Bethesda is back on the table, thanks Microsoft! :yeahboi:

I'm pretty sure the AoC event is a first party spirit event. Nintendo owns the characters.

Anyways, with Monster Hunter being the "front runner" right now. I'm actually getting spirit event vibes for Monster Hunter Rise. It feels too similar to what happened with Trials of Mana. And let's not forget about Resident Evil the next biggest Cacpom series after Street Fighter and Mega Man.

I mean technically Microsoft doesn't own Bethesda yet but I agree. Seeing as Steve was negotiated for a while, Banjo was presumably negotiated alongside him as well. I can see multiple bits of content going on in a negotiation.

You raise a good point, Steve negotiations supposedly went on before Banjo but we got Banjo first and Steve a good bit after.

Likewise, we got not just Hero and Sephiroth, but a couple of Squeenix spirit events between them as well.

But nah, they couldn't possibly have negotiated an Altair costume and Rayman separately even though those are two entirely different divisions within Ubisoft.

Make that 4 and a half (Steve may not be anime, but he is a swordie). XP
If our ARMS rep was a certain blue-haired man of springs I could say that his long range makes him another blue-haired swordie.

I don't think it makes any sense at all to say that the Ubisoft costumes disconfirms Rayman when the Ubisoft costumes are part of Fighter Pass 1 and not Fighter Pass 2. It's like saying that Hero disconfirms Sephiroth for Pass 2 or Banjo disconfirms Steve for Pass 2.

By that argument all of the Spirit Events and Mii Fighter costumes during FP1 aren't deconfirmations either.

Ehhhh I would prefer to say this is a case by case basis

Took a stab heh at making a wishlist thing but I’m lazy so I drew it on my phone lmao. And yes I am everything wrong with the Smash community by asking for 4 anime swordsmen in a row.
I know this is a wishlist and not a prediction, but I'd like to point out that Lloyd is more likely than Yuri by virtue of DEMON FANG Theory
LOUD TINFOIL CRACKLING
Hey guys I just came up with the dumbest Tales theory on a whim. For maximum dumb, read the attack names in the voice of their user.

DEMON FANG Theory
DEMON FANG Theory runs off the idea that the arte DEMON FANG is emblematic of the Tales series, and a Tales rep needs to have it to properly represent the series. DEMON FANG is a simple technique that sends a wave of energy across the ground. It is usually the first arte your main character learns or starts with, and is generally their main ranged technique. It's pretty similar to Terry's PAWAH WAVE, actually. DEMON FANG is such a staple of the series, it's actually the logo of it

Due to the move being so integral to the series, I have come to believe that a hypothetical Tales rep absolutely needs to come with DEMON FANG. As such, I have compiled a list of Tales protagonists who can use DEMON FANG and those who can't. Note that I am only counting the "Mothership" (Mainline) titles.

Can use DEMON FANG (Viable)
  • Cress Albane (Tales of Phantasia)
  • Stahn Aileron (Tales of Destiny)
  • Reid Hershel (Tales of Eternia)
  • Lloyd Irving (Tales of Symphonia)
  • Veigue Lungberg (Tales of Rebirth)
  • Caius Qualls (Tales of the Tempest)
  • Ruca Milda (Tales of Innocence)
  • Emil Castagnier (Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World)
  • Kor Meteor (Tales of Hearts R)
  • Asbel Lhant (Tales of Graces)
  • Ludger Will Kresnik (Tales of Xillia 2)
Cannot use DEMON FANG (Not viable)
  • Kyle Dunamis (Tales of Destiny 2)
  • Senel Coolidge (Tales of Legendia)
  • Yuri Lowell (Tales of Vesperia)
  • Jude Mathis (Tales of Xillia)
  • Velvet Crowe (Tales of Berseria)
And there you go. DEMON FANG Theory

Depends on when they negotiated for the costumes. Since Mii costumes require much less resources, they could've talked with Ubisoft about making these costumes while FP2 was being finalized.

I'm... not sure I'd call Steve a Swordie. It's a similar case as with Meta Knight, where they wield swords but otherwise could not possibly have less in common with the fighter archetype. And this is in regards to gameplay, not aesthetics.

If we're being really specific and counting Steve's entire moveset, he's about 8/27th of a swordfighter. Counting Mine, Craft, and Create Block separately, that would be 8/29th of a swordfighter.

It's kinda weird that the community is so adverse to swordfighters despite the fact that there are just as many fighters who fight with their bare fists as there are who fight with swords.

I bet we wouldn't get much of those complaints if we didn't have 8 FE characters, 4 of which have similar movesets.

there are only two kinds of characters in smash

swordies and brawlers

we really need a mage character to complete the trinity of rpg classes

Steve isn't a swordie, he's blocky. :172:

Anyways: On the topic of a Tales character, gosh, I HOPE so bad it happens, but I ain't confident ATM lol. I feel like if a Bamco character was gonna happen it would've happened already. :drshrug:

You forgot gunners.
A decent chunk of (mmo)rpgs I played tended to not have dedicated gunner classes, while the holy trinity of sword, brawler, and wizard/mage was in pretty much all of them in some shape or form, with a few exceptions for stuff like Digimon Cyber Sleuth where there aren’t really any dedicated classes

And now for your daily dose of optimism-laced theorizing
Ah, amiibo theory. Forgot why we consider March to be such a big deal in the first place. Perhaps I won't need my tinfoil hat for this after all.

So Tales 25th Event Theory
  • The Tales 25th Anniversary livestream is being held sometime in March
  • Amiibo Theory dictates that CP9 is probably coming March as well
  • Bandai-Namco is working on Smash could potentially have some sway over the development, at least when it comes to their IPs
  • Steve's reveal and presentation were timed to be around MineCon, with the latter being streamed directly before the show
  • Based on all this, we can come to the conclusion that CP9 could be a Tales character, revealed in March before or during the 25th anniversary livestream
Aside from that, there's also the fact that Bamco probably gets a bigger slice of the pie than most already, since they're working on the base game. Perhaps Nintendo felt they were best confined to a DLC pack so they didn't take up too much of the profits, followed Bamco got the Tales character pushed back to capitalized on the 25th anniversary livestream. I believe COVID delayed the stream, so that could've pushed the character back even farther.
