Thing is Square already had two playable characters beforehand - Cloud and Hero. This is ArcSys and KT’s first pieces of content in the game, so IMO it doesn’t bode well. Same goes for Bethesda with the Vault Boy mii, and one might argue it doesn’t look good for Ubisoft with the Altaïr costume either
I agree on each of these except Koei Tecmo, where the presence of Fatal Frame in the base game is something of an edge case. Certainly doesn't guarantee a KT character, but it's not quite the same boat as ArcSys, Bethesda, etc.

What y’all think about the Hyrule Warriors spirits in terms of a KT character? Think it makes their chances lower, higher, or no change at all?

In the Hayabusa thread there was a point that before we got Sephiroth we had random Square Spirit Events so could this mean that we might actually see Arc System Works get in since they had a random spirit event? I’m curious to hear y’all’s thoughts.

And I’ll be quite honest, Hayabusa and Sol Badguy being 2 of our last 3 is a ok with me.
I'm still mulling it over. I remember Vergeben claimed there were talks with KT, but didn't specify what. I believe KT was added to the copyrights after the AoC event, and I think they were mentioned for Byleth's trailer as well for using the cutscene of the game they helped develop. Maybe that was what the talks were for?

I agree in that I don't think a Spirit Event inherently tosses out a company, especially not when it's one of ArcSys' big series like Guilty Gear or BlazBlue. Heck, they didn't even originally own Kunio-Kun; They bought out they previous owners. I think that's the biggest standout of the Spirit Events thus far; Everything else has either been first-parties, on the Switch, or one of the involved company's breadwinners. And if we do end up getting Sol... Can't say there's any room to complain, really.

I checked and nope the most recent copyright is Mojang AB for the big list of playable character copyrights

koei tecmo does appear in the classic mode credits but that’s for the Yuri Kozukata AT. I do believe other companies that don’t have a playable character appear in classic credits too

I thought it was for a separate copyright section; Companies that don't have fighters don't show up on the site. Though, I'll have to double-check on that one.

I think it helps him more than anything, although my opinion on him hasn't changed (I think he is very likely).

As for ArcSys, I feel similarly. Like, I believe that talks with these companies would go further than a simple spirit event each - especially with the River City one which came out of... pretty much nowhere, unless ArcSys just went up to Nintendo and asked for River City stuff in Smash and that's it. But I feel like ArcSys costumes could just as easily happen too, not to mention Billy & Jimmy Lee or Sol as playable characters which is also not impossible (but imo not super likely).

AoC is a bit of a special case because, just like Fatal Frame, it's both Nintendo and Koei Tecmo. We've still yet to receive anything that is 100% owned by KT but I believe seeing their name again is nothing but a good omen for more of their content down the line. At the very least, we will see KT costumes. There's no way Hayabusa doesn't show up in ANY capacity before DLC is over, playable or otherwise.

For people who think playable Nintendo characters can happen at a promotional angle:
There was a problem fetching the tweet
Granted, not all of the listed candidates are likely at the moment, but I thought I'd share anyways.
Elma
Fiora
Adeline
Black Shadow
niiiiice. Don’t see Octoling anywhere tho, but I can accept this

Sorta unrelated but I can't help but laugh whenever I see a character unfairly dismissed as a generic anime swordsman because one of my most-wanted characters is pretty much just a generic anime swordsman

I don't get a say in this matter
My most wanted is an anime swordie..... with a sword that fires lazer beams pew pew

This sounds like a fun game. If you could add 3 bosses to Ultimate, who would they be?
My 3.
1. Giygas
2. Mother Brain
3. GladOS.
1. Bring back Rayquaza, except at an arena based on the Sky Pillar and give it Mega Rayquaza as a second phase.
2. Snatcher (A Hat In Time)
3. Hades (Kid Icarus)

Not sure what that's suppose to convince me of. Posting jpegs of 100 random Nintendo characters is supposed to make me think they'd all make good Smash characters?

The difference between spirits and mii costumes in terms of company-wide chances is that mii costumes can be tied to a loosely related fighter, while spirits usually come from the same franchise. The most convincing argument for a mii disconfirming a company for the rest of the pass, IMO, is "Why wouldn't they save that costume for the character from that company?" Mind you, I'm not convinced that's 100% a disconfirmation either, but the point is you can't really make that argument with spirits.

So yeah, if the AoC spirits mean anything for a KT rep, it's a good thing.

See here's the thing, kids.

It's not so much "Nintendo doesn't have any interesting characters left".

It's "Nintendo doesn't have any interesting characters that actually feel like they could get into Smash" lol

A lot of those characters in that Tweet are just minor side characters or protagonists of long forgotten Nintendo IPs that weren't really that big to begin with. It's not really hard to see why most of them aren't on the radars of the fanbase, nor Nintendo and Sakurai themselves.

I can't believe he listed John Raimi. No one knows who that character is and he would be one of the coolest picks for DLC. He's also mentioned Pico who would be an awesome second F-Zero rep.

I can't believe it's been more than 20 years and they still haven't added Wario or Yoshi to Smash, smh.

I think Rhythm Heaven and Style Savvy have a pretty realistic chance.

The lack of Rex, Waluigi, Waddle Dee, and Pokemon (Fire Emblem's also pretty lacking in here) really hinders this list. I also don't like how a lot of those characters would probably be clones. You make first parties look really bad when you include the Kid Icarus Uprising multi-player playable characters as an interesting candidate.

Alright, let's see. We got:

Dixie Kong, Toad, That Girl from Eternal Darkness, Mona, Magnus, Sylux, Goku, Rivali, ...Can't even make it out, Sukapon,
Karate Joe, Ray MK. III, Midna, dunno, still dunno, Baby Mario, Foreman Spike?, Hades, Pico, Tom Nook,
Gooey, King Hippo, That Guy from Ever Oasis, Jill, Cranky Kong, dunno, King Boo, Master Koga, Tsubasa Oribe,
Mipha, dunno, still dunno, really dunno, Doc Lewis, dunno, still dunno, Birdo, dunno, Ashley,
Chibi-Robo, Prince of Sable, Takamaru, That Guy from Sushi Strikers: Way of the Sushido, Viridi, Tetra, Dark Matter, Doshiin the Giant, dunno, Donkey Kong Jr.,
Samurai Goroh, Koopa Troopa, Skull Kid, Captain Syrup, Unnamed Girl from Rhythm Heaven, Ganon, Euden, Metroid, Andy, Marx,
Wario (Wario: Master of Disguise), Dillion, dunno, Kamek, Adeline, Black Shadow, Saki, dunno, Daruk, Elma
Mach Rider, Urbosa, Starfy, dunno, Isaac, Pom Pom, Porky, Bald Bull, dunno, Tiki,
Chozo, Yarn Yoshi, Rick & Kine & Koo, Uh...M-Mable? Marin?, Nikki, Seven, Medusa, Professor Wright (or something like that), Paper Mario, dunno,
K.K. Slider, dunno, still dunno, Sherrif, Krystal, Funky Kong, That Guy from Startropics, Captain Rainbow, Kumatora, and Tingle

81/100 ain't bad.

Anyway, a bit like what was said earlier, Nintendo doesn't have a shortage of cool characters, but it is running out of characters with high broad appeal. Like, how many people would care if Pom Pom were added to the game? How many would even recognize Doshiin the Giant? I don't think they're all bad additions, but as far as big, marketable DLC picks go, pretty much all of them miss the mark.

I dunno, I know Smash is a Nintendo all-stars game first and foremost but I get why people are turning more towards a few specific first-party characters or third-party characters as opposed to more first-party choices. Nintendo has a huge amount of great characters and franchises, many of which aren`t yet represented well in Smash, but the vast majority of the roster includes Nintendo`s most famous franchises and well-liked characters. Most of the characters on that list probably wouldn`t get too many people excited, they are either from relatively obscure franchises (which I think would be pretty cool regardless) or minor characters from franchises that are already well represented.

I'm pretty sure most of those 19 characters are actually spirits in Ultimate, such as the guy next to Mipha and the girl next to Sheriff.

I think a lot of them would be good for the next game though, except like, that sheriff assist trophy, why is he there? and probably a couple others I don't recognize or just vaguely remember seeing, but yeah a lot of them don't make sense as dlc

Most of these sort of characters are better suited for the base game.

"Interesting" characters is ultimately subjective.
I'm down for a good chunk of that list like Elma, Fiora, Funky, Urbosa, Tiki, Zeta Metroid and Hades to name a few.

But Foreman Spike? Yarn Yoshi? Prince Sable? DK Jr? Anything from Animal Crossing?
Can't say I'm interested.

Conversely plenty of people would have no interest in Tiki but would love to see Tom Nook for example.
