I reeeeeally think people underrate Tom Nook’s chances to represent New Horizons. That game carried Nintendo thru the entire last year. And he even got “Chrom-ed” in Isabelle’s trailer imo, and look where Chrom is now. Nook would be our 2020 character (even though he’s older).
It's understandable. The NH spirit event lowers the chances of it getting DLC.

I mean, I guess, but that game was MASSIVE. Nintendo likes to feature their heavy hitters. It just is a matter of did they plan it before winding down production on DLC or not. If there’s a FP3 (which I doubt), it’s all but guaranteed.

Also, while it certainly factors into my estimation of his chances, that’s like the definition of a breakable fan rule.

I wouldn't count it out completely, but I feel like it would have been picked as the hot new game instead of Fire Emblem: Three Houses if it were to be picked for DLC.

While Nintendo does go for fairly popular characters with the DLC, it could be that they've concluded that Nook just doesn't offer that much novelty as a fighter, especially if a lot of potential ideas for him have been done between the Villager and Isabelle. Its easy to think of them as considering only hype and name recognition for that but it wouldn't surprise me if there were numerous would be fighters they couldn't find an interesting/satisfying moveset for and thus didn't go with.

They still consider Ace Attorney important enough to include in promotional pics like this with other current big names.

And I'd say the same about Dragon's Dogma if we ever talked about it, which is also pictured.

Also, "but she's in the character group shot" is literally a point I've seen used for KOS-MOS. It's not art that determines the measure of a series.

I kinda don't see Tom Nook being anything more than yet another variation on Villager's moveset, and I don't see them selling a deriative character as $5.99 DLC you have to pay for, especially with how unique every DLC newcomer has been thus far.

I think Nook has a high chance of showing up in the next game. But I’m not so sure about him in Ultimate’s DLC. If we get a FP3, I think Officer Howard & especially Ring Fit Trainee would be at the front of the first party line.

Ring Fit’s been another breakout hit for the Switch. Not to the extent of New Horizons, but it’s done crazy numbers & doesn’t have a fighter in Smash yet unlike Animal Crossing.

I could definitely see Nintendo/Sakurai wanting to spread the love for Nintendo IPs this time around. We haven’t seen any series get multiple original fighters in Ultimate yet, it might be on purpose.

But at the same time, you’re right in that New Horizons is an absolute monster. It’s a very special case that doesn’t happen often. So it would make sense for Nintendo to want to cross-promote it & Ultimate.

They might not have known how successful NH would be when planning FP2. Corona Lockdowns absolutely boosted the demand for that game. People doing virtual meetings in Animal Crossing lmao.
It should be noted that NH just came out in 2020, after FP2's roster was pegged the year before. They wouldn't have had any knowledge of its sales at the time, and by the point the sales would've came in it would've been too late to change course since all of the negotiations and early work on the characters were already being done.

At best, if it does have an effect it'd be for a third fighter pass, and that assume we get one in the first place.

Maybe they could give him a more unique moveset with Bells involved, and having to pay for certain specials, and their power being weak if you don't have Bells?

Tax Collector moveset sounds very novel to me. If it were derivative of Villager (again), I’d be pretty disappointed.

I’m sure Nintendo knew NH would be somewhat of a heavy hitter. They nearly planned all of 2020 around that one release. They just didn’t know quite the extent of that success.

I don’t think Ace Attorney’s on the same level as Resident Evil, Devil May Cry or Monster Hunter. But I don’t think it’s that low on the Capcom totem pole either. They’re still actively supporting the franchise with new games.

Compare that to poor Amaterasu, Morrigan & now Frank West who aren’t getting anything. Or Arthur who’s just now getting his first game since the PSP.

I’m not an active Phoenix supporter either. I think he’d be cool, but I’d take Leon/Jill, Dante & Haggar any day of the week over him.

Man, Kingdom Hearts is one the quintessential game of the PS2, one of the best selling consoles of all time. It was such a bizarre cross-over that set a precedent (even for crossovers like smash bros to look for bigger names) in the industry which is often emulated. Sora might be newer, but he’s absolutely an iconic character to gaming. KH is one of those games that even non-gamers know about.

And don’t get me started on the Keyblade!
Let's not forget the story writer for the KH games happens to be the same story writer for the Subspace Emissary!

NH's success wouldn't really be relevant, but Tom Nook himself is a popular hit character and the previous mascot(and far more important to NH than Isabelle anyway). They could choose him not to really promote NH, but because he's a notable character with his own merits. How Sakurai implements him is where the question would be. Nintendo isn't choosing the movesets, after all. So it's a matter of how he thinks he could be unique, and the timing would easily allow Sakurai to look at new stuff from NH to work in.

It's possible. The Spirit Event is directly meant to promote NH. Tom Nook wouldn't be really for that, though he could easily represent the game if Sakurai sees good materials to spice him up from Villager and Isabelle.

Not every character is chosen for the sake of promotion, really.

So your saying his moveset could revolve around extorting your enemies for cash, buying weapons with said money, and then beating said enemies with these weapons?
Sounds like capitalism to me, I’m in.

Last POTD for a Weekend by the way, from now on they are Monday to Friday only (Japan time)

No, I don't think Ace Attorney is low on the totem poll, I just don't think it's high either. My basis for comparison in the first place was that the series are treated above their station, not that they're of the lowest rank intra-company-wise.

I suppose I find Phoenix Wright a little likelier than KOS-MOS, but I still don't find him all that likely. Especially with characters like Chun-Li looking more plausible now.

Yes, but what does she have makes her the frontrunner? I don’t hate her, she could actually be really cool. But I see her talked about so much after Sephiroth, and I don’t get what makes her so special.
There was a 5chan post from around Ultimates launch that said that Chun-li and a Tales character was in development but were ultimately not used. I'm pretty sure this isn't what you meant but here it is anyways!

What does Chun Li have going for her? I don’t understand the hype.
Being one of if not the single most recognizable video game character not on the roster?

First lady of fighting games, irrefutable icon of her genre and rivals Ryu himself in popularity and notoriety as Street Fighter's secondary mascot. I think the hype is very clear - the only obstacle for people seems to be looking at this through the guise of "reps" and seeing Street Fighter with three characters not feeling right to them. Which IMO doesn't really matter when you have the clout that Chun-Li has, she can stand for herself.

Come on... you don't know what makes Chun-Li so special?

I would elaborate on this but I assumed this just explained itself. I'm not even saying she's a "frontrunner" but man she's like one of the most popular video game characters of all time. It's clear why people turned to her when the prospect of additional characters from third party series revealed itself. Apologies if I sound a bit rude about it but I'm just a little baffled that out of all the things someone could say about Chun-Li it's questioning why she's special / popular.

The legacy she carries is enormous, her presence would be a major crossover event in and of itself.

We have plenty of icons not on the roster. I understand shes massive and important, but what makes her dominate the speculation scene as of late? When I question her being “special”, I question it speculation wise, not legacy or presence or whatever you seem to think I’m doubting. She, like many, has legacy and importance in spades. I just don’t see why she specifically is so huge, compared to the others talked about.

I guess that works, though a single 5chan leak really doesn’t seem like it warrants all the hype.

I think the leak just got people talking about her, is all. Kinda like with Hayabusa and KOS-MOS.

Chun-Li is being brought up so much as a frontrunner for several reasons that I've gathered at least

-The 5chan post
-The theme that has been made up for the pass, that theme being Dropped/Old deals
-The fact that Chun-li would 100% be the next Street Fighter rep.
-A Flimsy understanding of Copyright law (Meaning that, No one here is a copyright lawyer so we don't really know the details and we REALLY don't know the details about how Copyright junk works for smash specifically.)
-Just some general discussion

Alright, that I can definitely see. Out of curiosity, how do you guys think her back charge input would work? Would they just outright change it or do you think Smash could make it work?
