Saw GTA discussion. If a GTA character got in, I feel like that would blow minds to another astronomical level like other characters. We'd realize "yes, literally any video game character regardless of their origins are worthy for Smash"
You think GTA has what it takes to top Steve or do you still think Steve would remain on top in terms of hype?

Definitely know its hard to predict who the last three are but to bring more discussion and speculation to the beginning of the New Year. What are everyone's predictions on the final 3 and why?

Just trying to keep things going to let this year start off with a kick.
I feel the most confident on Arle than any other character, but I also feel Hayabusa and Crash are still high up there and would make sense for double E3 reveals.

Arle(CP9)
Hayabusa(CP10)
Crash(CP11)

Right now, my gut feeling is telling me Crash, Reimu and a League character, in no specific order.

What I'd really want is Nightmare and a combination of two people between;
  • Sub-Zero (or any MK rep, really, but Sub is the coolest :p)
Eh, I'd prefer Kitana. She's hot.

Well, two of my predictions are Crash and Sora, since they are very popular and highly likely candidates (especially in most other peoples' predictions).

As for the final one, I'm not completely sure, but I'd say it's be someone that would cause a LOT of surprise, celebration, and coverage by fans.

I mean Steve would still probably be top, but the reaction to a GTA character in Smash would swarm the Internet. You'd have people who don't even play Smash be like "holy **** Nintendo actually added a GTA character in ****ing Smash Bros." News outlets would be going crazy covering the story. It's something completely unexpected, especially when GTA gets a lot of bad publicity. With someone like Steve, it's not outlandish to see him make it into Smash since he's mostly seen as the mascot of a family friendly game. But throw in someone like CJ, and the reaction would be absolutely wild.

My predictions on the final 3 are Reimu, Pokemon, and Dungeon Fighter rep. Pokemon's case is I feel like it is the type of series where it'll somehow pop up in the FP2 somewhere. While Dungeon Fighter and Reimu are more out of it seems like characters aren't discussed as much or seen as no chance of appearing tends to end up in FP2 quite a bit.

I feel confident on no one and I really like it. My only hopes are more first parties in general but yeah I’m ready to just vibe for the next three
Honestly, that is where I am at as well. There is no confidence on any characters for me, but I am ready to just ride out the last 3. Though, it will be quite a site when it gets down to the last slot.

For the first time in a while in Smash Speculation I have 0 expectations, I'm just here to talk about characters and see what other people want.

So given the Final Fantasy anniversary of last year (December 2020). What are some anniversaries to keep an eye out on?

I recall Ace Attorney (20 years), and The Legend of Zelda (35 years) being among those.

Would really love Phoenix Wright. Really pulling for him!
  • Pokemon (25 years old)
  • Resident Evil (25 years old; out of the running until further notice)
  • Crash Bandicoot (25 years old)
  • Tomb Raider (25 years old)
  • Sakura Wars (25 years old)
  • Halo (20 years old)
  • Devil May Cry (20 years old)
  • Golden Sun (20 years old; out of the running until further notice)
  • Okami (15 years old)
  • Pushmo (10 years old)
  • Dark Souls (10 years old)

I definitely feel Zelda & Pokemon are the biggest two to look out for. They’re two of Nintendo’s 3 biggest series & I expect some big stuff for both this year.

Zelda in particular is in a good spot for Smash IMO. It’s fully owned by Nintendo, unlike Pokemon. BOTW2 is the biggest game on Nintendo’s horizon & this could cross-promote it. It could also give Sakurai the opportunity to appease the long standing fan complaint about Zelda’s fighter representation; it’s been 13 (arguably 20) years since we last got a new Zelda character!

I’m not as confident in Pokemon anymore, atleast a Sw/Sh rep. I feel like that would’ve happened to tie into that game’s DLC like Byleth did. But who knows maybe it could be Eevee as a legacy/anniversary pick or a Pokemon from a remake they have planned?

There’s also Metroid at 35 years, but Metroid ate pretty during the base roster. Donkey Kong turns 40, but it also ate pretty good with the base roster.

Halo (as well as Xbox) & Devil May Cry both turn 20 this year. Sonic & Street Fighter II turn 30. Crash, Resident Evil & Tomb Raider turn 25. Skyrim turns 10.

Ryu Hayabusa is a pretty safe pick with a lot going for him right now. Everything I said about a Zelda rep earlier also applies here.

The Chun-Leak gives me some confidence in a Tales rep. I was losing faith in another Namco character just because it’s been so long. But that leak seems pretty real to me & I could see Lloyd/Yuri being in the same boat as :ultsteve: :ultsephiroth: .

I’m not as confident in Chun-Li. If that leak is to go by, it seems like they straight up replaced her with:ultken:. Unlike:ultsteve::ultsephiroth: who didn’t get anything similar to them or anyone else from their franchises. I think Chun’s a big candidate for the next game, but I’ll be a bit shocked if she shows up as DLC.

I also still think there’s a good chance that FP10 will be a big character since they were probably planned to be an E3 character. There’s a decent amount of candidates for that spot. Crash, Monster Hunter, Master Chief, Lara Croft, Ezio, Dovahkiin & to a lesser extent, Dante.

Devil May Cry’s in a weird spot where it’s a smaller series than most of the third parties in Smash. But Dante himself is a big, well known character. So I could see him being an “E3”character, but he could also pop up anywhere.

Sooo someone out of:
  • Ryu Hayabusa
  • Lloyd/Yuri
  • Zelda rep
  • Big third party character

My wildest prediction is two first parties and one third party. But that's as wild as I'm getting.

I've started thinking more and more that a Konami character just might be a dark horse choice in some fashion. Don't know specifically whom, but its one of those companies I don't find myself dismissing as much as I was a year ago.
I definitely think the next Konami character would be Bill Rizer from Contra. Contra’s one of those iconic NES series. It’d be shocking if we atleast didn’t get a Mii or Spirit before Ultimate ends.

Same. I think Raiden is a pretty darkhorse candidate now that Sephiroth is in. He's not at all likely, but there's a decent chance I feel.

Have we ever had a newcomer reveal/release that coincides with their series’ anniversary or a new title from their series? The only one I can think of is :4littlemac:. I don’t think that CP9 being revealed in March and not being Monster Hunter would be surprising at all. Smash doesn’t care what else is going on. If Sakurai/Nintendo feel it’s time to reveal a new character, they’ll do it whenever they please, regardless of who said character is and whether or not something is happening with their series. It doesn’t have to coincide with anything.

I can see that too tbh. Whether it be a new franchise like Contra or Suikoden or someone like Raiden from MGS.

Well, if anniversaries matter so much to y'all...

There was a problem fetching the tweet

I guess we'll somehow get 28 characters in three slots :^)
The Melee game seemed pretty popular with people. With its anniversary this year, maybe there's an outside chance of Fighting Wire Frames getting a spot in Ultimate.

Actually, I’m willing to die on the hill that GTAIV and it’s expansions were all way better than GTAV. Sales be damned.
I only play GTAV more than IV because of mods. And some of those mods I've installed include GTAIV driving/ragdoll physics and vehicles.

I'm not going to name specific fighters because we're down to 3. But some general thoughts:

* At least one, possibly two rather safe picks. I find it decently likely that one of those will be relatively "minor league", but still going to be prominent within its own genre. Don't count out say Falcom for that reason alone, even if they're not looking like frontrunners.

* One complete surprise pick though - one not traditionally associated with Nintendo. It's going to be incredibly difficult to say what though - I'm kinda tempted to say a LoL champion, for instance, but there are a couple reasons why I don't think they're a frontrunner: Nintendo only partnered with Tencent starting around 2017, which is potentially a tight window for FP2 - assuming negotiations for Smash took place - and there's the fact that Ubisoft's been close to Nintendo for a while. Other surprise picks have potentially similar issues, such as Nintendo haven't been super-close to say Valve, 2K or Sony (to say the least), so it'll be difficult to say whom.

* Based on the DLC released so far, I don't think that gameplay mechanics will present an obstacle. We've had three DLC fighters who have "Really long range" as their defining gameplay element for instance, and most have been lightweights (except Terry "Heavier than Wario" Bogard).

Hope yall are ready for the return of :foxmelee: as CP11, as Nintendo tries to cater to the Melee crowd by giving them the ability to multi-shine opponents on a really laggy connection.

Strange how this person listed Diamond and Pearl's anniversary and not Pokémon as a whole. Turns 25 this year.

Do not worry about anniversaries it probably helps with a character’s marketing but it won’t be the reason why the character will be chosen. There are many examples of people thinking we are going to a certain character just because their anniversary is coming up. July or August with Waluigi due to Mario Tennis anniversary and in December and the TGA with Doom. Neither ended up happening.

If the character is part of the pass and there's a opportunity where they could conveniently line up the anniversary with the character's reveal, they might do it.

Regardless, people are paying way too much attention to anniversaries. I doubt any character has ever gotten in Smash simply because of an anniversary. It's a ridiculous way to choose your characters.

Yeah, I saw it shortly after I typed it. The crop lined up perfectly with the image, so I thought that was the entire thing.

Reimu - Indie rep, massive Japan appeal, easy to license
Isaac - Big request, fan-favorite of the pass, new, non-renewal trademark means Nintendo's doing something with it
Lloyd - Fairly big request, massive popularity of Tales, negotiations leak points to a deal that's still floating around

So with the New Year coming to an end in a half hour (At least in the west). I wanted to ask everyone who their Ballot vote was?

Mine was King K. Rool.
  • Snake from my phone (EVERYONE IS HERE)
  • Fiora from my then work computer (appears in Shulk's Final Smash)
  • Neku (still absent)
