After running it by cashregister9 cashregister9 to be sure that it was okay, I'm reviving the concept of a DC vs. Marvel thread. I figure that there's a lot of potential with the idea (Lego games have been teasing the possibility for YEARS, and there are rumours of Netherrealm working on one), and with over half a century of material per company, there are definitely a lot of ways that we could go for a game like this.

Both Marvel and DC have a long history with fighting games (Marvel with various Capcom fighters; DC with Netherrealm-made games, along with other titles like Blizzard's "Justice League Task Force"), so there's plenty of video game adaptations to draw from for those two companies to make it easier to picture what the characters could do in a fighting game, or we could go in a different direction and try to include characters and stages that weren't in any pre-existing games.

Either way, Marvel and DC both have a long history of building a ton of different and beloved series and adaptations, and even crossing over several times in the comics. (aside from the issue pictured above, there's also Kurt Busiek and George Perez's "JLA/Avengers" mini-series, among other examples) I'm honestly surprised that they haven't crossed over in video game form yet, and while I don't know how likely it is that it will happen, we've always got hypothetical/"What-If" threads like this.

Starting Roster

Superman (Clark Kent)

Spider-Man (Peter Parker)

Batman (Bruce Wayne)

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

Wonder Woman (Diana Prince)

Wolverine (James "Logan" Howlett)

As tempting as it is to go with a bunch of characters, I figured I should go with three picks each to limit myself. DC's seemed incredibly obvious (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman - easily the most recognizable out of DC's heroes), but for Marvel, I had a tough time with picking three. Spider-Man objectively has to be in here, but there were a few characters that I was debating between for the second and third spots. I went with Wolverine because he's consistently been the most recognizable of the X-Men, and Iron Man because he was pretty much the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the past decade or more.

Gameplay Details:
-a one-on-one fighter, similar to Street Fighter II or the Injustice games
My suggestion considering the type of public that this game would appeal is a 3 button based with light, medium and heavy attacks independent of the existence of punches and kicks, I would like a more complex button selection but I think we should have a quite more easier layout. The fourth remaining button could be a unique action or a launcher (depends of how much fast-paced this game should be)

Definitively I think there it shouldn't be too much complex motions (like 360's and of course definitively no pretzels and other type of things), yet I think we could have charged inputs, the super moves could be either a QCF or a QCB twice or the MvC system of make a single motion but pressing two buttons (unless we add EX moves, because it would overlap themselves).
As for arcade, nine fights seems like a nice number - seven fights against random opponents, a rival battle with a cutscene beforehand (though there could be several possible options for each character - for example, Batman's rival battle could either be the Joker or Captain America), and a final boss fight, followed by an ending cutscene.
The arcade mode should work similarly to SF games, where we also include bonus stages between fights.
Considering the nature of the game, I think this is the best option for a boss:

THANOSEID

Ok WTF is this dude?, well, it's time for a mini history lesson, in 1996 Marvel Comics and DC Comics decided to collaborate in a crossover between their characters in a event properly called Marvel Comics vs DC/DC vs Marvel Comics, during this particular story their universes merges into one creating the Amalgam Universe where known characters from both editorials gets fused creating things like, well, Spider Boy, Iron Lantern, Super-Soldier, Dark Claw, Speed Demon, Dr. Strangefate and of course, Thanoseid that of course is a fusion between Thanos and Darkseid using the Infinity Stones and the Anti-Life Equation.

In terms of gameplay considering the inevitable appearance of both villains in the roster (especially if this idea wins) I think something like Shin Akuma/God Rugal in CVS2 would be curious, depending of the boss you defeat the other would absorb them and became one, technically having two different Thanoseid, one having more traits of Thanos' abilities and the other of Darkseid's.

The quality of the Amalgam Universe is....questionable to say the least but it's an interesting concept that I think we can retake and make it better here.
Thanoseid moveset

Bonus Stages:

-Car Smash - much like in Street Fighter II, your character destroys a car - in this case, it's the Shocker's Shocker-Mobile.
-Horde Battle - fight waves of Parademons or Doombots; see how many you can defeat within the time limit. (they're much weaker than regular fighters)
Story Mode: Infinity Crisis!
Sick of being defeated by the Avengers and the Justice Legaue, Darkseid and Thanos's quests for the Infinity Stones and the Anti-Life Equation has led them to the same point in space time. This causes the Multiverse to split open as the Marvel and DC universe begin to fuse. During the madness of the merger, heroes and villains alike clash as they blame each other for the disturbance. But everyone must put aside their differences, as Metron appears before the heroes of the two worlds. The events have caused the two intergalactic tyrants to fuse, becoming the terrifying Thanoseid! He now seeks to rule his new universe. The heroes of both worlds must gather together to stop him.

A slightly generic, but big and bombastic story.
Would be a cinematic story mode much like the Injustice and Mortal Kombat ones, high quality cutsences with fights to back them up. Darkseid and Thanos don't actually need to be playable, though we proablly will add them at some point.

(It's an example btw)

Action figures would be like trophies from Smash, but you could move their limbs (And also pose them whatever you want).
Also you could collect them like trophies. They range from iconic Marvel characters to obscure ones.

The figures are 11 cm long.

My default answer usually, but it is one that has some legacy with Marvel and, to an extent, DC. This image I'm using, for example, looks tailor-made to present all the characters and concepts easily. That series even included a few teams, team-ups, items, etc., so whatever could be covered in Smash Bros. trophies could also easily be covered here, as well.

Job 1: how many characters should be in this?

This seems pretty self-explanatory, though keep it reasonable; while I'm sure that people could come up with 200 character rosters, that seems like an excessive amount, to say the least. Ideally, it should be an even number, since I'm hoping to have an equal amount of Marvel and DC characters - we don't want a Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite situation where the two sides are imbalanced for no apparent reason.

Job 2: nominate a member of the Justice League

I'll try to mix a fun job in with the more detail-oriented jobs; in my experience as a thread-runner and a participant, people mainly care about character nominations for these kinds of threads. The Justice League is a broad category (it basically encompasses every superhero in DC at one point or another, or at least it seems that way), so there are a lot of directions that we could take this prompt, from beloved heroes like the Flash or Green Lantern to lesser-known picks like Zauriel.

Job 3: nominate a member of the Avengers

I'm not sure if I'll have two character jobs at once (one Marvel and one DC) or if I'll space them out and do one at a time going forward, but as it's the first day, I wanted to start things off with a bang. (and make the first set of nominations accessible even if people are only familiar with one of the two companies) The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made the Avengers, and many of its members, into household names, and it was tough to narrow it down to Iron Man over many of the other heroes who have been associated with the team in the past and present. However, you don't have to stick to the MCU; any member is fair game.

---

I'll save my nominations for towards the end of the nomination period, to give everyone else time to make suggestions rather than taking one of the obvious picks right off the bat by virtue of being the one who's running the thread. Depending on the amount of nominations, there might be more than one addition for a category; I'll wait and see how popular/busy this thread gets.

I'll try to make each job last about 24 hours (starting a new one around 1 or 2 pm Eastern time, give or take, depending on my schedule), though if I have to extend a job, I'll let everyone know.

For any of these jobs, try to include a reason for your nomination, or in the case of a character or stage, a description of who/what they are, what could make them an interesting choice, etc. Some picks might seem obvious, but not everyone is going to be familiar with all of the characters, so it helps to provide a description and show passion about what you're suggesting. We'll decide on gameplay and a title later, likely tomorrow for at least one of those, but I wanted to get an idea of what the size of the roster would be first.

Job 1: 30
Just think it’s a good amount. It’s pretty big for a game like this that’s a new IP (technically it is lol) but it’s still not too much

For jobs 2 and 3 I’ll submit Flash and Captain America. You probably know who these guys are so I won’t go too in detail but they’re mainstays of their teams and I think we can pretty much all agree they would be good picks

Gonna go with 50, because I feel that we have many DC & Marvel heroes out there.

1656008969369.png

I nominate Thor, because he is one of recognizable members from Avengers and his electrical attacks would fit in the game.

1656008985834.png

For DC, I nominate Green Lantern, because he is one of popular Justice League members and it makes sense to include him.

For the roster size, I'm goin 48. I think that's just about the right number for big crossover fighters like this. Plus, both of these universes have, like, an absolutely ginormous amount of characters. 24 each is still barely scratching the surface of what's possible

For the characters, I'll nominate Captain Marvel and Martian Manhunter. Captain Marvel is a current member of the Avengers and a very popular and pushed character, and Martian Manhunter is simply an iconic DC character I feel

Poggers.

Job 1: 50, 25 and 25 would be great.

Job 2:
Ant-Man (Scott Lang)
1656009700153.png

Hank would have a longer career in the comics but I really dig in Paul Rudd's version of Lang and make me like more the character in general. Also its kinda obvious that a lot of people buys those games for the movies lol.

Red Tornado

I remind him from the animated series, it's very badass imo.

I'll post my nominations now; since a lot of the big picks have been posted, I'll focus on characters who haven't been playable in the Marvel vs. Capcom or Injustice games.

The Wasp (Janet van Dyne)

Socialite, fashion designer, and one of the leaders of the Avengers (her time as chairperson has only been beaten out by Captain America), Janet founded and named the team. Despite being founding Avengers, her and Hank don't seem to get the same sort of respect that the others do, and I'd like to see them included in more media, particularly video games. (her portrayal in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes was great)

The Wasp has the power to shrink to the size of her namesake, along with reversing the process to grow to a gigantic size. (she doesn't use that aspect of her powers often, given what it's done to Hank over the years, but she's shown the ability to do that in modern comics) Her strength increases when she shrinks or grows, and she can also shoot bio-electric blasts and (only when shrunk) fly with wings that were implanted on her back. (the wings stay insect-sized, so normally, they're near-invisible) Like many Avengers, she was also trained in hand-to-hand combat by Captain America, making her a formidable fighter.

Plastic Man (Patrick "Eel" O'Brian)

During a heist, criminal "Eel" O'Brian was doused in chemicals. After being nursed back to health, he found that he can stretch his body into practically any shape he desires, and was convinced to embrace the brighter side of life. Fortunately, he used his newfound abilities to fight crime rather than continue his thieving ways.

I'm honestly surprised that Plastic Man (or other shape-shifters like Clayface) hasn't been made playable in the Injustice games yet; maybe he'd be difficult to animate? However, thanks to his shape-shifting abilities, the potential for moveset options is nearly limitless. A light-hearted and goofy character, especially when compared to fellow DC rubber-man Ralph Dibny/the Elongated Man, Plastic Man seems like he'd provide plenty of comedic relief while still being a talented and versatile fighter.

Oooooh, this sounds fun.

Job 1

I would say 40 like @Darkonedagger said, perfect amount of characters.

Jobs 2 and 3

Justice League:

Cyborg

Cyborg_(Victor_Stone).jpg

A part of the Justice League and Teen Titans, he can be proven to have an interesting moveset for sure. Plus, representation for POC in a fighting game.

Avenger:

Black Widow

042_bluebayou_digital_keyart_teaser_r16_lg.jpg

She's iconic and can provide a super fun assassin/spy themed moveset for sure. Plus, we need more females.

Here's the poll for the amount of characters to be included in the roster. (I rounded Janx's nomination up to 36 to make it an even number, since the alternatives seem like they'd be that one company would have more than the other or that there'd be an original character, and I don't want to get into making an OC for this game)

As for voting on the characters, we're going to do a ranked voting system like what's done in other threads. Basically, you list your top three characters, where the character that you list first gets three points, the character that you list second gets two, and the one that's third gets one point. (there might be some cases where we only do a top two instead)

You can't put your own character in first, to encourage people to consider what others have nominated rather than putting their own choice in first all the time. In this case, we'll be including the top two from each poll.

For example, my votes are as follows:

Justice League:

1. The Flash (meaning that he gets 3 points)
2. Martian Manhunter (meaning that he gets 2 points)
3. Captain Marvel (meaning that he gets 1 point - not sure whether to call him Captain Marvel or Shazam)

Avengers:

1. Captain America
2. Thor
3. Captain Marvel

Here are the nominations:

Justice League:

-The Flash (Barry Allen) ( Champion of Hyrule Champion of Hyrule )
-Aquaman (Arthur Curry) (@Darkonedagger)
-Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) ( Tankman from Newgrounds Tankman from Newgrounds )
-Robin (Richard Grayson) ( Janx_uwu Janx_uwu )
-Martian Manhunter (J'onn J'onzz) ( Speed Weed Speed Weed )
-Red Tornado ( Infinity Sorcerer Infinity Sorcerer )
-Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) ( cashregister9 cashregister9 )
-Plastic Man ("Eel" O'Brian) ( Megadoomer Megadoomer )
-Cyborg (Victor Stone) ( AlteredBeast AlteredBeast )

Avengers:

-Captain America (Steve Rogers) ( Champion of Hyrule Champion of Hyrule )
-The Hulk (Bruce Banner) (@Darkonedagger)
-Thor (Thor Odinson) ( Tankman from Newgrounds Tankman from Newgrounds )
-Squirrel Girl (Doreen Green) ( Janx_uwu Janx_uwu )
-Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) ( Speed Weed Speed Weed )
-Ant-Man (Scott Lang) ( Infinity Sorcerer Infinity Sorcerer )
-Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) ( cashregister9 cashregister9 )
-The Wasp (Janet van Dyne) ( Megadoomer Megadoomer )
-Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) ( AlteredBeast AlteredBeast )

I figured I'd put the real names in brackets where applicable since multiple people have taken on many of these identities - I made assumptions as far as the Flash, Captain America, and Green Lantern were concerned, so if you meant a different one, let me know. There will be plenty of chances for anyone who doesn't make it in to be included in the future, so don't worry if a character doesn't get included in this round.

Job 4: what kind of fighting game should this be?

While this is purely hypothetical (unless one of us suddenly gets a ton of free time on our hands, I doubt this will turn into an actual fan-game), I figure that we'd have to establish this before deciding on stages, at the very least.

There are plenty of types of fighting games out there - aside from the split between traditional fighters (ex. Street Fighter) and platform fighters (ex. Smash Bros.), there's also 2D fighters vs. 3D fighters (ex. Tekken), one-on-one fighters vs. tag fighters (ex. 3 v 3 like Marvel vs. Capcom 3, or 2 v 2 like X-Men vs. Street Fighter), and other examples like the ratio system found in Skullgirls or Capcom vs. SNK 2 where you can choose one really powerful character or 2-3 weaker ones, or the team system found in the King Of Fighters.

I feel like it's best to give people a chance to nominate ideas for this, rather than throwing up a poll and finding out later that I forgot an option that people would want to see. It helps to give an example for what kind of game you're talking about.

For example, I'll nominate the classic 1-on-1 2D fighter. Think Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters, Injustice, Mortal Kombat, etc. - two characters fight in an arena where there are no obstacles to avoid or unusual terrain to navigate. It's simple and straight-forward, but I feel like that simplicity works well here.

Marvel:

3. Hulk

DC:
1. The Flash
2. Green Lantern
3. Aquaman

For Job 4, I'll nominate the 3 v 3 Fighting game system for this thread, since it would be reminiscent of MvC 3 game and IMO it makes sense to make this game a tag fighter like MvC 3.

Justice League:
1. The Flash

3. Cyborg

All iconic names right here.

Avengers:
1. Captain America
2. The Hulk
3. Black Widow

Once again, all names that should be in eventually.

Job 4

I would have to say 1 v 1 like Megadoomer Megadoomer said. Simple is sweeter here and I feel we do not get a lot of 1 v 1 fighting game creation threads here so I feel it would be fun to work with that.

1. Cap

2. Thor

1. Flash
2. GL
3. Aquaman

Pretty much all these are good picks but I think we should focus on the mainstay names to start (Marvel needs some women but we can fix this kater)

I'm feeling 1v1 for this but I'll also throw in 2v2

  1. Cap (I honestly think it would be added by default)
  2. Thord Odinson
  3. Ant-Man

  1. Flash
  2. Shazam
  3. Aquaman
I think it would depend of the quantity of characters, if there are 40 or 50 then a 3v3 like MvC3 would be better, but if the quantity of characters is minor a 1v1 works.

I'm not sure if it's an error with the site that I'm using (Strawpoll), but the votes aren't showing up for whatever reason. (I've voted, but even my vote isn't appearing)

Try this one instead; if the votes on StrawPoll show up later, then great, but I just tested this poll out and the results show up immediately, so I know that it works.

I'd say let's make this a SMASH game. I've always wanted a SMASH style Marvel (or DC) game. I just think it works so well with superheroes.

The roster will have 48 characters!

Here's the results for the character choices:

Flash: 28
Aquaman: 15
Green Lantern: 7
Shazam: 3
Robin: 3
Martian Manhunter: 2
Cyborg: 2

Captain America: 27
Hulk: 15
Thor: 14
Captain Marvel: 1
Black Widow: 1
Ant-Man: 1
Ms. Marvel: 1

To the surprise of presumably nobody, the Flash and Captain America will be included in the line-up for this game! (congrats Champion of Hyrule Champion of Hyrule )

I originally planned to have them as part of the starting roster (and going by these results, I probably should have - almost everyone had those two in first place, and the only one who didn't have the Flash in first was the person who nominated him and therefore couldn't put him there), but I wasn't sure whether people would prefer Barry Allen or Wally West.

In second place, we have the Incredible Hulk and Aquaman, so both of @Darkonedagger's nominations made it in as well!

However, I've got a bit of a dilemma - there's a pretty big gap between the top three nominations and the rest of them, especially on the Marvel side (Thor was tied with the Hulk for a while). I don't think anyone would argue that Thor and Green Lantern shouldn't be in the roster, and rather than making people potentially wait weeks to see them included, I feel like it's best to include them now. (let's be honest - the next time that they'd be eligible for a nomination period, they'd pretty much be guaranteed to win) The roster's on the bigger side of our options, so I doubt anyone will mind if we include six characters from this vote instead of four. (so congratulations, Tankman from Newgrounds Tankman from Newgrounds )

Here are our new additions - while it might seem like a lot at once, it seems like it would be hard to imagine a general Marvel or DC game (one that isn't based on a specific series) without them!

JLA Avengers winners.png

We're going to have a poll to narrow down what type of game this will be.

While I was going to go into stages, there's a pretty big difference between a traditional fighting game stage and a platform fighter stage, so I'm going to save that for tomorrow. In the meantime...

Job 5: nominate a title

Pretty straightforward - the title of the game shouldn't necessarily impact the plot or roster, so just choose a title that you feel fits the concept of Marvel and DC crossing over.

I'll nominate DC vs. Marvel: Infinity Crisis. Admittedly, it's one letter off from an existing DC event, but "Crisis" is often used in big DC crossovers, and Jim Starlin had a trilogy of big universe-shaking crossovers that all started with "Infinity".

DC vs Marvel: Concerto of Comic Book Legends

I got inspired by the Konami vs Capcom Smashboards Creates Title so I wanted to throw in the word “concerto” somewhere. I just think it suits this grandiose crossover.

Going by the poll, this will be a one-on-one fighter, which makes it much easier to come up with, or describe, stages.

Here's a separate poll regarding the title:

And speaking of stages:

Job 6: nominate a Superman stage

Job 7: nominate a Spider-Man stage

Pick a location that's associated with Superman and/or Spider-Man, describing what it's like (or providing a picture), along with describing background cameos, objects, etc.

Just because a character appears in the background, it doesn't rule them out from being playable - they'd just disappear from the background if they're being played as, like Tron Bonne in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 or Toon Link in the Spirit Tracks stage for Smash.

It was also used in MvC3, one of the most iconic places imo, just replace the Capcom references to more Marvel or DC propaganda. Of course your main cameo would be J.J.J., but other New York citziens and superheroes would appear like Mary Jane, Miles Morales or Luke Cage.

Daily Planet

The stage takes place on the roof of a Metropolis skyscraper, with the Daily Planet building visible prominently in the background. Daily Planet staff members like Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Perry White can be seen in the background, along with the occasional fly-by by Superman allies like Supergirl or Krypto the Super-Dog.

Brooklyn Bridge

An infamous location in the Spider-Man mythos (the art and text contradict each other on which bridge it is, but I'm going with Brooklyn) - the battle takes place on one of the towers of the bridge, overlooking the city. (I was thinking about including cameos, but given that this is where Gwen Stacy died, I thought it might be in poor taste to have the Green Goblin fly by)

The game's name will be DC vs. Marvel: Infinity Crisis! Glad I didn't go with my original plan - "Crisis on Earth-616" would probably have been too clunky.

Here are the polls for the stage jobs:

I'm going to save moveset nominations for later; in my experience, people have a tougher time with coming up with ideas for those. (I might save that and costume ideas for tomorrow)

Job 8: nominate a DC villain
Job 9: nominate a Marvel villain

A hero's usually only as good as their villains - I'm not sure if Batman would have had the lasting appeal that he's had if he only came into conflict with generic thugs rather than the likes of the Joker, Two-Face, or Catwoman. Both Marvel and DC have no shortage of noteworthy villains (and not-so-noteworthy ones - Shuma-Gorath made it into Marvel vs. Capcom despite his appearances numbering in the single digits) that could make for interesting fighting game characters.

This one's pretty straightforward - nominate a villain to be part of this roster. It will depend on how many nominations we get, but I'm thinking the top two from each side will be included. (like before, I'll save my nominations for later) I realize that there's a bit of a gray area, with characters like Harley Quinn or Catwoman being on both sides depending on the story, but as long as you can justify it, I should be fine with it.

Job 8:
Joker (DC)

The main antagonist of Batman series and he is is criminal with clown makeup that always fights Batman in Gotham city. He became evil because of his failure comedy career and death of his wife and unborn child and that's the reason why he became evil.

His moveset would reference his actions from comics and movies in game.

Job 9:
Thanos (Marvel)

1656356204883.png

Well, I nominate Thanos, because he could find in fighting hame. He could be Bowser of the game due to his powers in the game. He is most popular Marvel villian of all time after Green Goblin and others.
His moveset would use his Infinity Gauntlet - his signature weapon that has reality-bending ability when it has Infinity stones.

Job 8: Damien Darhk

Damien Darhk is the leader of the H.I.V.E. but is most well known for his role in the Arrowverse where his appearance and moveset will be taken from

Job 9: Crimson Dynamo

Most people think that the Crimson Dynamo is just a Russian Iron Man. But that is not true for he has the ability of controlling electricity. And I think that would be cool if he used that in this game
