The videos you have of me are when I was playing with a cast over my right thumb. I'll see if I can show how good GnW is with 2 WORKING HANDS!~!!!

OP update

didn't add the Nap ones because they were from before 2.5

Good matches dakpo. Don't know what to comment exactly about but it seemed like you do well in those matches until you get out of grove and start going in to hard. Also you always recovered UP-B -> Double Jump, which your opponents were figuring out. You could have survived a few of their edge guards by going the other way around every so often.

@dettadeus: The vs. Ivysaur one was before 2.5 but since it was a BR build, it was identical to 2.5 G&W.

The vs. Ike one should be fine though. It was recorded in January 2013 and was 2.5b.

Play CF for a week. It seemed like you weren't DD enough and as an extension of that you weren't mixing up your approaches. Obviously in that matchup giving Ike too much space is bad, but you have to find a balance where you can bait out more moves from him so he can be punished.

Anther thing is that a lot of your recoveries were failing unnecessarily to small things, like trying to save your jump when you had no reason. Just rewatch a few of them and maybe you can work out some ideas on your own. On the flip side, your edgeguards could have been more efficient also. Mostly I'm talking about not committing to early to a read. Ike really shouldn't be allowed to recover high; you should always force him low where he is most likely to make a mistake. And even though his Up-B makes you feel terrible when you mess up, you should go for the edgehog him when he is forced to sweetspot the ledge.

good matches though. Your combo game is solid, and the fact that I saw no Side-B made me smile. #KillUncompetativeMoves

Thanks for the insight, darkmetroid. You're totally right about the recovery. I think I still have some of the lingering habit from melee trying to use the jump to space for the max sweetspot range. Also, in these matches I felt that a lot of my fail recoveries were due to me expecting a tech and then not reacting with the second jump soon enough.

I guess I am a little more timid about jumping off the ledge than I should be but metroid has so much match experience against my G&W that I've been getting burned more for shoddy edge guard attempts. Looking back though, he really shouldn't have recovered as often as he did. Shame.

And regarding the side+B, opponents start wising up to the hammer real fast. Besides, bacon is THE spamable move on G&W and I can see results already even though I just recently started using it. Zero lag landing is pretty sweet for shield pressure and spacing and hopefully when I stop being stupid about using it, it will help with approaching. A cool trick is double bacon plus RAR bair. Or pan hit to dtilt. Or grab. This move is amazing.

I'll try playing around with CF and see if it helps with using DD more effectively but I am pretty mediocre with everyone that's not G&W...

DD is pretty hard vs. ike so idk. You were doing a ok job of baiting him into doing moves, from what I could tell at least. Bacon isn't as spammable as you would think, metroid caught on pretty quick and started reading it for an easy punish.

Work on your sweetspotting. G&W can go really low to the edge with his up b (which is even more dangerous if you saved your double jump since it prevents edgehogs.

Don't be afraid to edgeguard ike. When he spins above the ledge its a good time to try for a trade with your fair. You can also go offstage and dair/fair/parachute to cover a lot of options if you see he's going low. A lot of times you positioned yourself well enough to get the dair meteor but you just up b'ed back.

Don't roll. Period. There are a few applications for getting out of pressure, but usually up b is way better. I saw a few times where you actually could have hit metroid with an oos up b

Use more hammer. Its game and watch's best move in a lot of situations. Just don't be dumb about it and you'll get some nice mileage. It has a lot of active frames so you can use it similarly to the chair

vs. ZSS & Tink

I wish I could say that this is good footage, but I wasn't really on my game. First match I played pretty brain dead and cooked Ganon a five course breakfast. Second match I have a lot of johns for but lets just say I wasn't in the right mindset for competing.

I don't think ZSS is a bad matchup and Tink is pretty beatable on battlefield.

Yo Juu, those were some great matches! I'm surprised no one else has commented yet. Anyway, you probably have some of the best overall movement of a G&W that I have seen so far. So smooth. And you got some really nice reads. Overall, good stuff! Hope you post some more vids soon.

It seemed like you were forcing yourself to play too fast. It showed because you overshot aerials where you had guarenteed followups off of dtilt and grab. Also, Rat spent a lot of time sheilding at your approaches... so you could have gotten a lot more grabs. When you did get your grabs, you didn't get your followups off of them much either. I saw your tournament set vs Oro a bit earlier and I remember seeing you go for uthrow hammer at 23% or so. She DIed out and you just missed with the hammer. Go for a regrab, she falls fast enough to get it. Also you gotta finish your edgeguards better, Nap.

I really like some of the decisions that you make in neutral, but your punish game is basically the difference between you and your opponents when you lose. A huge example of this is at 5:03... you solidified the grab, got the regrab and I'm like... yeeeeah, he got it and then you jumped and miss a fair. My heart sank. You had ftilt, fsmash, dtilt... like anything that didn't require a jump.

@ Juu, I totally agree. I was coming off a 2-3 week hiatus since college ended and I'm not roommates with metroid1117 anymore. I could feel myself using bacon as a crutch too often to force openings and was substituting speed for mind games because I had lost a lot of basic control. I've got another tourney I'm planning to go to this weekend but I doubt it'll get any better since I still don't actually own a wii. Oh well. No johns and all that. Thanks for the advice, I will definitely keep it it in mind.

I only watched one of those (the first) and it's been a long time since I've seen so much jumping-into-arpe.
From both parties too...
Why are people so obsessed with Bacon-defaulting in neutral? haha
