How's this? I was trying something new with image layer masking. Since Snake is like the ONLY character in Brawl with decent images of him from other games on Google, I just used him. I'm thinking about 86ing the white because it's actually really irritating to look at. Don't worry about the obvious black font issue, I'll get to it after work.

Also, feedback from anyone that has some helpful insight would be greatly appreciated.

You don't have to go with layer masking. It would be fine with a color or gradient only. Sometimes simplicity is the real key to a good looking image.
