Riot sheilds are confirmed as being a perk in multiplayer.

“So how is this riot shield thing going to work in multiplayer?”
Bowling – “Oh, it will be a perk!”
“Won’t it be pretty over-powered?”
Bowling - “Not really, there weakness is a flash grenade, whenever they get flashed they lower the shield revealing a nice head-shot, What is really cool is having two people with riot shields crouching down while one person fires over the top of them, it is effective and it looks cool.”

Everyone keep those flash grenades handy! ;)

If 50 Cent is the Multiplayer announcer for the Marines he will always say "WHERE MY CRYSTAL SKULL AT?!" at the end of each match.

At the beginning he'll say "LETS GET SOME BLOOD ON THIS HERE SAND"

Thanks for posting that, man! They have some really nice wallpapers on their website!

Oh, and here's an update on Modern Warfare 2 :

Fourzerotwo's latest Tweet : "Aiming our next Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer video for release next week. The focus will be on a new Perk that A LOT of you suggested!"

Source : http://twitter.com/fourzerotwo

I will post a link to the video when it is released.

EDIT : Call of Duty: Modern Warfare screenshots on the Wii...

Looks like they didn't even try. Pretty bad graphics IMO.

is there any word on a multilplayer beta????
Activision has neither confirmed or declined the existence/release of a multiplayer beta for Modern Warfare 2.

I did find this article regarding the beta :

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=221588

"Activision has told CVG at Gamescom that there'll be be no multiplayer beta for Modern Warfare 2. You may remember that the first MW game had a huge open beta test that you could say was a massive success in bringing people round to Call Of Duty's multiplayer options. But it looks like there's no need to do that this time round. The sequel will be big enough, thanks. "

This article is not OFFICIAL so we'll just have to wait until Activision confirms this article's legitimacy.

Just to clarify to everyone : There is no official word at the moment as to if there is going to be a multiplayer beta for Modern Warfare 2.

NO MULTIPLAYER BETA FOR MODERN WARFARE 2!!!!

Source : http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/cvg-no-multiplayer-beta-for-modern-warfare-2/

"An Activision spokesperson confirmed to the outlet that there will be no multiplayer beta for the game. "

EDIT : Fourzerotwo (Community Manager for Infinity Ward) has said on his website (http://www.fourzerotwo.com/) that they are plan on running an extensive closed beta among Infinity Ward, Activision, and possibly 1st party partners worldwide. There MAY or MAY NOT be a multiplayer beta for Modern Warfare 2.

Basically, no multiplayer beta has been announced/confirmed or declined at this period in time. They are currently doing an "inside beta" and then will decide if they should release a multiplayer beta or if it is not needed.

EDIT 2 : Modern Warfare 2 on the PC will cost the same price as the consoles... ($60)

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/modern-warfare-2-bringing-60-price-tag-to-pc-games/

"Well, PC gamers, you had to know it couldn't last forever. Even though you've traditionally enjoyed paying $10 less than your console brethren for big new releases, your luck, it seems, has run out, with Gamestop, Amazon and Best Buy showing a $60 price tag for the standard edition of Modern Warfare 2."

*The $60 price tag is the "normal" price for X360 and PS3 games. Canadians such as myself have to fork over an ADDITIONAL $10 because our dollar is worth less...*

Special Ops information

http://kotaku.com/5342448/special-ops-brings-more-mile-high-club-to-modern-warfare-2

"Special Ops levels are broken down by difficulty, type of play and type of enemies you will be facing. The start up screen for the mission shown today listed the level's estimated completion time as 1 minute and 30 seconds, classified it as an assault mission and noted that the estimated opposition would be "heavy."

Players can go through the level by themselves, with a friend online or on a single, split screen. They can choose to play the levels in regular, hardened or veteran difficulty. The harder the difficulty, the more stars earned.

Those stars, we were told, can be used later to unlock more content in the game.

The missions we were shown started in a dingy brick-walled room. The player was able to decide which weapons he wanted to use from a the selection strewn around the room. When the player was ready to start they walked up to a demolition charge attached to one wall and pressed a button.

The time starts when the wall blows in. That initial explosion sent a nearby enemy rocketing backward through the air. Time slowed for a second as a player squeezed off two shots into the airborn enemy and then turned to shoot another nearby and slightly dazed foe.

After that momentary slowdown, game play returned to full speed.

The objective in this particular mission, which we watched being played by a single gamer, was to survive a dash through dilapidated tiled rooms. Enemies swarmed in from the other end of the room, snaking around stalls as others charged down second floor hallways and started to target the player with red laser sites.

The first time through the gamer died was about a minute and a half in with 17 kills. The second time it took him two minutes and one second to work his way through the rooms, take down 22 enemies and escape through a hole in the floor of the far room. A couple of enemies were still standing when he dropped from view."

Wow Spec Ops looks promising! :o

I'm curious as to whether this will be able to stand up to Nazi zombies in WaW, which imo was one of the few things that made WaW a success.

Only time will tell!

Dual-wieldable deagles confirmed in MW2

http://twitter.com/fourzerotwo : "Just walked off stage. Crowd was amazing, went insane chanting "pick it up!" when I stumbled over Dual-wield Deagles. lol - Akimbo confirmed"

I'm not gonna lie, dual deagles sound pretty manly lol.

Mad Catz has announced some overpriced Modern Warfare 2 accessories. One of them including a $50 Wired 360 controller with a MW2 skin. $50 seem a bit pricey for a wired controller? Well, you're right, it is, but there's a catch. The controller will have two extra buttons on the back for you to map actions such as sprinting and other Analog stick related actions to, clearing up your analog stick of everything but movement and aiming.

Of course, that still leaves you somewhere between holding down the button to sprint and looking down your sights to aim.

http://www.destructoid.com/mad-catz-to-distribute-tons-of-peripherals-for-mw-2-145740.phtml

Oh, and of course, it's being made by Mad Catz, so if it doesn't break in a week it will have some odd design that's uncomfortable to hold.

Modern Warfare 2 Doubles Your Shooting Pleasure

http://kotaku.com/5344759/modern-warfare-2-doubles-your-shooting-pleasure
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/101/1017882p1.html

"Akimbo is NOT the perk in the new MP trailer this week.

I was presenting a singleplayer mission at the GameCrazy show this morning on stage and happened to walk over a body that had Akimbo (dual wield side arm), therefore the icon for the weapon popped up on screen and the room went crazy with chants demanding I pick it up and use it.

So I did.

Happened to be dual Deagles. Now to calm some initial fears of "OMG! Overpowered!". Akimbo is limited and balanced, just like EVERYTHING in the game. It's limited to sidearms, harder to aim than standard and you can't go ADS (aim down sights) since you have a weapon in each hand; Among other balancing techniques, so don't freak out before you see it in action.

It's cool."

Dual weapons confirmed.

Time will only tell how deadly dual deagles will be.

What do you guys think of it?
I'm thinking that it'll be like dual wielding in the Halo series. (i.e. You can't throw your grenades or knife while dual wielding in order to balance it out)

I'm also thinking that dual wielding will lower the pistols/deagles damage. I just don't want MW2 to become the next Halo 2...(where everyone rushes to dual wield)

Of course, alot of people are complaining (why am I not surprised?) on the IW forums saying stuff like "omg dual wielding takes no skill", "Modern Warfare 2 is now ruined!", "only noobs will dual wield" and "I'm not going to buy this game anymore because it's turning into Halo 2/3"...

Don't forget that there's going to be a new multiplayer video released sometime this week showing off a new perk which alot of players requested/suggested/wanted! I'll post a link to the video when it's out! Can't wait! :)

EDIT : A screenshot of the menu of the "Special Ops" mode in MW2.

Unfortuantely, the new multiplayer video is not being released till Tuesday.

Remember, Fourzerotwo said they were AIMING to release it sometime this week but he never PROMISED it!

"http://twitpic.com/flg8d - You're looking at a raw unedited capture of MP footage. Good news. We're releasing it that way! Bad news? Not till Tuesday"

http://twitter.com/fourzerotwo/status/3608539602

The video got removed by the user. I'll try to look around for it. Then proceed to post it on the front page.
Found another copy of the video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5AbVZO1oPY

I was under the impression that your video rickrolled me but thankfully it didn't. :)

And thanks for posting the video of the spec ops gameplay! Didn't know about it till you posted it!

You know, while the dual wielding ability won't allow ADS, it really won't matter. What's a commonly used perk in MW? Steady Aim.

I'm really interested in how the AK performs in this game. The one used for campaign was oddly accurate with very little kickback.

The new multiplayer video is up! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4PMRFkx07g

w00t! In-game host migration! No more "the host has ended the game" messages! :)
Infinity Ward does it again! Greatest video we've had yet!

This game looks so polished! Notice how much more intense the multiplayer looked than the first MW? Explosions and gunfights every corner you turned (it was probablly set up like that though). The map looks amazing as well.

I'm loving the pictures that pop up after you kill someone. It shows their name as well as... a class or something? If you look at 0:32, you can see the word "silent veteran" above the opponent's gamertag, as well as various other names on different players. Perhaps it's someone's rank? I guess we'll have to find out.

Enough of my rambling. Time to put this bad boy on the front page! Enjoy! :)

I really don't think I could be more excited for this game. The fact that you can throw knives is wicked cool. ^_^
Reminds of me Goldeneye 007 on the N64 where you could have DUAL throwing knifes and in Perfect dark 64. I remember there was this glitch in PD 64 that if you killed someone with a poison throwing knife and if you stuck 3 knives into their body before it disappeared, they could continue to take damage and end up dying 3 more times! Can't wait for PD to be released on the XBLA!

wonder if they will make a pro-mod like they did for COD4 so it can be played competitively.
MLG has COD4 on their circuit. I assumed that MLG makes every game "competitive".

This is exactly the same as the other FPS of the past 5 years.
Enjoy your monotony.
Why would you want to change up a formula that earned the 2007 game of the year award?

....Yea not a very smart move huh? Go spoil someone else's thread, while MILLIONS of others can enjoy the biggest game of 2009.

ty and god bless :)

Because why would you want to buy the same game over and over with fewer game play enhancements than Madden?
They only change asetic things in FPS (except some of Valve's work) for the most part.
I'd rather buy a new game than a plushed up version of the same game.

What you fail to understand is that there are a bunch of changes, but it seems that you are too anti-FPS to notice them.

I'm tired of repeating this, and I'm gonna say it again. Call of Duty is NOT Madden! Madden comes out every year, while two different developers take turns making the Call of Duty games, which are Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Treyarch is known for making the mediocre CoD games, while IW makes the 5 star ones. If you IGNORE the failure games (imo) that Treyarch has made, then you can CLEARLY see that there has been a 2 year gap in between IW's games, which is PLENTY of time for new enhancements for the game.

CoD2, CoD 3, CoD4, CoD5, Modern Warfare 2- There. A two year gap between CoD4 and MW2.

Get it yet?

Guitar Hero. It sells millions. Even though everyone knows that Activision (or should I saw 'Axetivision'???) is milking it for all it's worth. It's still playing catch-up to Rock Band (the superior music game) in terms of features and stuff. (i.e. Reviving your band-mates during a song) Guitar Hero 5 is basically the same game but with new songs and a few new features/game play enhancements. Same for Mario Party.

It has been proven that gamers don't like new games. Look at Mirror's Edge for example, it's an entirely new game but it got rated an average of 79% (http://www.metacritic.com/search/pr...mtype=all&ts=mirror's+edge&ty=0&button=search) on the X360 and PS3. While Call of Duty: WaW got rated 83-84% (it's basically CoD4 but WWII...) on average for the X360 and PS3. (http://www.metacritic.com/search/pr...=call+of+duty+world+at+war&ty=0&button=search)

tl;dr version : Everything has been done before. The only things game developers/companies can do now is to add new features/game enhancements to their sequels or go along with the risky decision of developing an entirely new game.

EDIT :

Agreed. Infinity Ward > Treyarch. Call of Duty 3 has horrible. WaW uses the CoD4 engine (so they had their work cut out for them) and they went back to WWII for some reason...(it's not like we have ENOUGH WWII games...)

Please, list them, because this article, calls the innovation in modern FPS 'photo-realism' aka, flashy words for better graphics.

The monontinay and laziness of gamers and developers does not interest me. Seeing video game design being enhanced as a whole is what does. Games can advanced themselves, and still sell well.

Melee and Brawl are so far different, there is a huge amount of controversy between Melee and Brawl. The game is slower, the kill powers were nerfed, resulting in larger matches, very few charecters have a useful throw, the gravity was largely reduced causing characters to be very floaty, as opposed to the accidental chaingrabs in Melee Brawl has chaingrabs designed into the game, edge hugging elements were introduced, tether grabs were buffed, tripping, water and wind elements were added to moves to encourage gimping, multiple air doges, buffering was added, footstools, wall clinging, and the biggest change to any fighting game in the last 15 years that goes against all of the development of the fighting game genre.
No combos.
No combos is a huge change in gameplay, and something that fighting game's haven't even considered since the release of Street Fighter 1, though they were an accident in there. By taking out combos, Brawl encourages a bigger infasis and removes the large slippery slope that fighting games can have. Yomi is now the only way to victory, and while previously, you could only yomi the first attack, now both players must think about yomi after every single attack.
Now, players have found ways to get combos, such the use of buffering, attacks that cause tripping, footstools, grab releases, and through bananas, but weather or not these were intentional combos are yet to be seen, and a footstool combo has yet to be pulled off in a Brawl tournament grand final to my knowledge.
Despite these large chanes, Brawl is selling very well.
Final Fantasy has constantly tried to update and advance itself, though keeping true to the system, and it also sells very well.
Mario from 64 to Sunshine to Galaxy also features vast changes in game design, and also sell very well.
Grand Theft Auto.
I can go on.
Case and point, there is no excuse for the lack of design improvements in the FPS genre in the last 5 years. There are a few exceptions, namely the Valve games and the Metroid Prime series, but its game play improvements come more from its original source material than any intentional attempts to enhance the FPS genre.

Everything has been done before. The only things game developers/companies can do now is to add new features/game enhancements to their sequels or go along with the risky decision of developing an entirely new game.
Not true. Everything has not been done before.
The devloper of Unreal and Gears of War when asked what he thought about Resident Evil 4 said it was a prime example that we are reaching the peak of our respected genres, and soon people would have to either revolutionize these genres, or make entirely new ones. Case and point: Endless Ocean.

Endless Ocean is a game like no other, a game with no wrong answer, a game with no conflict. It is not exactly a simulation, it is not exactly an adventure game. Somehow, it rest a drift from all other games, finding its way in deep contrast with everything we know as a game.
Another example is Killer 7. Killer 7 took the rail shooter in a bold new direction, and to this day no game has dared touch its precedings.
De Blob.
Little Big Planet.
I could keep going with games that do show great signs of doing things no one has ever thought of before.

You don't need HUGE innovation for a game to be good. Modern Warfare hardly did anything to really "innovate" FPS's for good, and yet, it was one of the most successful and highly acclaimed games of the decade. Why is that? It's because IW took elements from past FPS's and did them RIGHT. It all comes down to polish, and NOT change.

If something is done nearly perfectly, then WHY change up the nearly perfect formula?? However, the game DOES have quite a few changes that are going to improve the game by a pretty healthy amount. A couple of examples are host migration, the new spec opps mode, and customizable kill streaks (which is the biggest one so far). If you want to see more changes, feel free to thoroughly read through the front page.

Are these small changes going to change FPS's FOREVER? No.

Are these small changes going to smooth out some issues and add more enjoyability to one of the greatest FPS's of all time? Yes.

My statement was for FPSs as a whole.

Irrelevant. This is a MW2 thread, not a "lets debate over the issues of modern FPS's not having enough innovation" thread. If you want to debate this, then make go make your own thread.

Actually, what you bring up is a fault in the game review system.
A developer was talking about the problem back when G4 was good, he gave the example of Airea51, where the game got a lower score on Xbox, for no other reason than a larger selection of FPSes. So, instead of games being rated based solely on how good they are, they are rated in comparison to their competition, which makes them more of a judgment at a business standpoint than a artistic or development standpoint.
A great example is the Endless Ocean review on gamespot. Gamespot's review makes it entirely clear that for what its trying to do, Endless Ocean is perfect, yet it only got a 7.5 or something along those lines. Why? Because of the question on to weather or not the average person would like it, because of its lack of confrontation that the game aimed for. Despite the game mastering its goal, Gamespot gave it a lower score due to the question of the market.
Game reviews, for the most part, are an incredibly flawed system compared to literary or film reviews.

Because why could these things not come in a down loadable patch?
Ever wonder why people call the lack of combos in Brawl 'game changing?' Because it constitutes a completely different game. None of the features you listed constitute the new, full priced release of Modern Warfare 2. Guilty Gear was a constantly updating series, but they did not claim each update a new game, and gave it a name that indicated a slight improvement, and charged bargain prices for it, at the most 30 dollars. When there were new game changing improvements, then they charged the full 50 at the time, and added an X to the title to indicate a sequal instead of an update.

Modern Warfare 2 is an update, not a new game.

Are these small changes going to smooth out some issues and add more enjoyability to one of the greatest FPS's of all time? Yes

Greatest FPS of all time? Highly doubtful. Certainly that game goes to Half Life, which gave birth to everything you know in FPSes today.
Modern Warfare was nothing but another presentation update, moving out of World War II is nice, but the game pans out exactly the same.

Whoo finally not sick anymore. :)

Crash, we obviously arent going to be able to change each others minds at all, so lets just end this right now.

Oh and btw, I didnt say it was the greatest FPS of all time. I said it was ONE of them, like top 10ish...

Off to school now. :(

Interesting...gives those gamers who buy this a small advantage. Some people have actually complained about the way how you sprint in CoD4/CoD WaW.

Good update f8al.

I'd also like to add that today officially marks that we are 60 days away from Modern Warfare 2! If you count today at least...

I'll start a 30 day countdown once we reach that point, but I might not make it. I haven't been this excited for a game since Brawl.

Cheers to one of the biggest games of 2009 coming soon! :)
