Not only that, but books you later went back to re-read and actually got something out of the second time. For me today's nostalgia was "Ordinary People"

I think it helped that I understood the characters from page 1 this time, but still I kinda wish I had given a **** about the books I read in high school, what if they weren't as bad as I thought, maybe I'll give To Kill a Mockingbird a second chance now...

Catcher in the Rye was my favorite at first, it really hit me hard at 16-17.

Also loved Yellow Raft in Blue Water

To Kill a Mockingbird was okay

Cold Sassy Tree was very sweet and funny

Adventures of Huck Finn was super boring and I didn't read most of it.

Loved Of Mice and Men a lot

Didn't read Slaughterhouse Five but read Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle in HS and adored it.

Completely got infatuated with James Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" in senior year and it's a big influence on me to this day.

Jane Eyre is the most miserable, boring, tepid, vapid book I've ever read.

Lord of the flies - not too bad
Romeo and Juliet - a little meh for such a well-known play.
Othello - ok, I guess
Night - good book
To kill a Mockingbird - I enjoyed it.
Of Mice and Men was pretty good.
Grapes of Wrath - Really good book, but I kinda felt it ended too soon.
The Great Gatsby - I did not like it. Mainly because I had trouble following the plot. Too bad, because my entire final in that class was based on that book :ohwell:
Huckleberry Finn - I wasn't really into it, because I found it a little boring.
Brave New World -
John the Savage dies :(
1984 - Good read, but I think they should've just killed the guy in the end, rather than simply foreshadowing it.
The Catcher in the Rye - reading it right now, it's well written, but I don't like the main character so far, because he's a whiny little *****.

@ru5514n:
If I recall correctly, they DID kill that guy off in the end in 1984.

Anyways, I'm a senior in high school, and I have read a couple good books in my time.

Huckleberry Finn-I enjoyed it.
To Kill a Mockingbird-I thought this one was a pretty good book.
1984-One of the best books I've ever read. The story remained in my mind for quite awhile after reading it.
Catch-22-I felt this one was kind of long and at times the story lost me, but I still enjoyed it all the same.
The Catcher and the Rye-A great, enjoyable read.
Tom Sawyer-I thought this one was a very "meh' book. I didn't really enjoy it as much as Huck Finn.
A Tale of Two Cities-I found this one to be very boring and hard to follow, it's probably my least favorite book that I have read in highschool.
Animal Farm-An okay book, a bit overhyped, though.
Cat's Cradle-A very good book that was very fun to read.

As for the works of Shakespeare:

Romeo and Juliet
Hamlet-My favorite Shakespeare play.
Julius Caesar
Macbeth
As You Like It

There is still a good amount of books that I would like to read. The ones that I would like to read next are (in no particular order):

Of Mice and Men
Ender's Game
Walden
Brave New World
Lord of the Flies
The Great Gatsby
Slaughterhouse Five

and probably some more.

As I remember, the last sentences in 1984 go:
"But it was all right. He won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother." At the time, Winston was sitting in a cafe, listening to a news announcement. He was still alive at the end of the novel, but it was strongly foreshadowed, if not explicitly stated that he was eventually gonna get killed.
And I forgot I also read Animal Farm. I did enjoy it, it was one probably in the top five of my favorite books.

Oh i forgot about George Orwell. I read Animal Farm in 5th grade and took it literally. Read it again in high school and it was ten times better.
Also Anthem by Ayn Rand is a pretty good dystopian type book.

I love that book! First read it when I was like nine though, don't think it's in the high school curriculum over here, though I wish it was.

Right now I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird which I'm liking a lot. Couldn't get into a Tale of Two Cities, which was the book I read for school before To Kill A Mockingbird, but we read an abridged version of Les Mis and Animal Farm before that which were both pretty good.

Freshman year I read Great Expectations and Romeo and Juliet. Great Expectations was incredibly boring, but Romeo and Juliet wasn't too bad (way overhyped though). I read Once and Future King and Gone With the Wind my 8th grade year, both of which I loved. Gone With the Wind is one of my favorite books of all time.

Looking forward to reading Catcher in the Rye next year, though. I'll probably end up reading it this summer because I don't want to wait haha.

I remember reading "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck in 8th grade. I really liked that story a lot and often think about it when I'm striving for a dream. If it's bringing misfortune around me I stop before something ultimately bad happens; but if not then a reach for it.

In middle school I primarily read books; but in high school my Literature classes focused on numerous short stories with a few novels in between. The Interlopers, The Cold Equation(s) and The Most Dangerous Game were probabally my three favorite.

When it comes to Shakespeare Macbeth was my favorite and lastly my favorite Edgar Allan Poe story was "The Tell-Tale Heart" with "The Fall of the House of Usher" right behind it.

Oh yeah, 1984 by George Orwell was awsome as well.

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens for me was so dry at the beginning; but then it gradually got better and then finished off nice.

The majority of the books I read in high school were godawful.

And 1984 isn't included in that list, because I had already read it.

These books I have read during my freshman and sophmore year (Still a 10th grader):

The Outsider (Really good book)
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (Also a solid story)
To Kill a Mockingbird (Brillant work of literature)
The Tell-Tale Heart
Night (Amazing story, I've even did a blog that was influenced by this book here.)
The Pearl (Okay, but the grammical issues killled it for me.)

I just checked out Lord of the Flies and I'm planning on reading a chapter daily.

Just read To Kill a Mockingbird.

Didn't like it.

GET AT ME.

Animal Farm was pretty good, but I thought they made that animated movie too Disney-like.

My school had a mix of good and bad books...books that I did enjoy include:

Girl with a Pearl Earring
First They Killed my Father
To Kill a Mockingbird

everything else was pretty dry and boring. You guys are pretty lucky you're not forced upon Tim Winton, an Australian author.

Urgh.

Here's some of what I've read in Highschool.

The Catcher in the Rye - Didn't like it at all, I dunno...not my type of novel, and I found it extremely dull.
To Kill a Mockingbird - I couldn't finish this book, I didn't like it again. I'm probably too much into Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels to be interested in a book like this.
The Color Purple - I loved this book, it was really hard to get into but once I did, I just read through this novel, and really enjoyed it.
Fahrenheit 451 - I loved this book, it was really really good.
Lord of the Flies - I liked this book! I didn't like certain areas of the plot (:() but it was enjoyable.
The Hobbit - Awesome book, especially because I enjoyed reading these types of books. Again, an awesome novel.
The Chrysalids - Really hard to get into at first, but later in, I began to start liking it.
To Sir, With Love - Wow, this was a really awesome novel. I hated it first, but once I got to know the characters better, I really enjoyed it!
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz - I really really disliked this book. I didn't like the main character at all, or none of the characters to be honest. The worst novel I've read in Highschool.

Check out Spook Country by william gibson, wonderful science fiction book I just finished recently. I'm kinda surprised house of leaves hasn't been mentioned yet. That book is... ridiculous.

The outsiders was actually an intresting book. The movie was very good too. It was one of the few books that I actually went back for a second time for on purpose.

Seems to kill a Mockingbird is pretty standard all across..
Freshman year- Great Expectations and Romeo and Juliet (if that counts as a book)
Sopmore- The Good Earth, Julius Caesar
Junior- The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter, Fannie Flagg and Fried Green Tomatoes, to Kill a Mockingbird
Senior- 1984, The Kite Runner, Night, The Book Thief, Lord of the Flies

Great Expectations was such a dry novel, all the upperclassmen laugh when they see the freshman toting that book around the halls, its the defining moment of the crappiness of freshman year...

The novels got better each year in my opinion, 1984 and the Kite Runner were two of the best books i have read
